    So cool that you’re traveling around Wes. Learning as you go. That’s what all of us do on our journey in life. Just try stuff, see if it works. Then try again learning the whole way. There’s no such thing as wasted time. Every moment in life has value.
    Your Redrock adventures and catching your first Striper (a very nice one), and cooking it on the beach was the best for me man. As you know, that was my island back in the early 80’s. But there’s only so much to do there and it’s cool to watch you venturing out.
    I believe you got hooked on fishing with that first Striper on Redrock. Now you’re seeing you just got lucky and how involved fishing is. It could be weeks of every day not catching the fish you’re after and what we did is blame it on the time of day, the month, water temperature, lure color, presentation, technique, and every other excuse. There’s a learned skill that catches fish every time but that takes years man and isn’t all that reliable. Pros don’t catch fish on low barometric mornings, but still the water looks really fishy.
    So you try, because you’re there. It’s about the whole experience. Just being there. Catching a fish is secondary to the beauty around you at any given moment. It’s therapeutic. It’s indescribable. You edit the narrative but nobody knows exactly what you thought about your adventure and it’s really nobody’s business. It’s yours no matter what.
    Keep doing what you are doing my friend from Redrock. You’re living real man. So cool to see.

    • @WesWherever

      So good to hear from you again, Sean! I really agree, every moment is an opportunity to grow and learn. I still have a lot I want to tackle at Red Rock when I'm back, but could not pass up this opportunity for an extended road trip! Definitely learning that catching fish can be very sporadic... I was practicing at a nearby lake recently and caught a smallmouth bass and bluegill. Then the next 3 times at the lake, nothing! Just motivates me to hone in my technique. Definitely relaxing and blissful to be out there giving it a shot and being mindful with the water. Thanks so much for watching again, your words really hit home and I'm happy you can find some enjoyment watching the adventures.

      @@WesWherever , Thanks man. Glad you’re traveling around doing different things. I spent my youth and middle age bouncing around between Hawaii, California, and Canada. Camping and fishing. And yep, spent hours and days in what looked like a perfect spot, only to catch absolutely nothing. You’re never sure what’s wrong so you try everything, to no avail.
      On my last adventure with my dad, we took a trip into the mountains on Vancouver Island to a lake 50 miles from nowhere, only accessible by float plane. Spent a week there. Salmon were jumping in the river and trout jumping everywhere in the lake in front of the cabin. Looked like a no-brainer. Casting from shore with mepps spinners, rooster tails, kastmasters, nothing bit. Unbelievable and insulting that fish were everywhere but nothing would bite any color lure I threw. I tried something I’ve never tried before, or even heard of, and that was to stick a couple salmon eggs on the hook of the lure. Bam! Got bit immediately and landed a nice trout. Okay, that makes sense, it’s a scent trail behind the lure and the salmon are spawning. Perfect timing for salmon eggs on a lure. After catching enough trout for dinner I decided to try casting the same lure without salmon eggs. Just to see. Nope. No takers on the lure without the eggs.
      I caught a couple chum salmon that way in the river as well. Live and learn and be creative about it.
      Great last adventure with my dad. Keep doing what you’re doing bro.
      Have fun, be safe. 🤙🏼

    Excellent wee adventure, reminded me of the time I was headed towards an island on a river, only to watch it get washed away before my eyes as I approached it. From then on, I'll never camp on an island like it again. No way. The way it folded on itself, tons of rocks and earth sandwiching, tells me you'd not survive it from within a tent and sleeping bag.

    just a tip - local rain is only one possible source of flooding in a river - dams can be opened, and a surge of water can travel for days along river networks before it hits your wee island. Rule of thumb: never camp in an area within a flood line (those sticks and grass up that tree above your head was not put there by The Storks mate! #drowningisreal

    You want to be careful using water filters like the one you have in built up/urban areas as you can find contaminates like oils & chemicals in the water and filters like the one you have only filter out biological contaminates and not man made. The only "portable" water filter I know off that works in both urban & bush environments is the Grayl.

    • @WesWherever
      @WesWherever  3 месяца назад +30

      Thanks so much for that advice... I have to say I had no idea about that factor! I will definitely have to look into the Grayl if I plan to filter in an urban environment again

      @@TylerKuntz-ww1wn Wrong.......water filters are rated to remove specific things just as CBRN/gas mask filters are rated for specific things. This is due to the components they are made from. I have first hand experience using different types of filtering devices such as the standard dust mask to P2/N95 rated filters and I have a close family member who is a former (30+ years) Combat Engineer in the Australian Army. This job, regardless of country, included water purification as well as working CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear) environments as well as decontamination who I have learnt many things from including the capabilities of filter types.

Once my daughter was sitting by the water in the park, and when she stood up, her phone fell out of her pocket and into the fast-moving creek, never to be seen again. Fish hooks are not really a problem for inflatables in the way that people think they would be. You need to apply a lot of pressure, even on serious failed hook sets they bounce off lol. MOSTLY. Fun overnighter! PS when you anchor in a river you want to do it from the bow or stern. Never from the side. You may know this already not sure. Not an expert myself but it does pose a possible danger. Use a trolley to run it up front or back.

    • @WesWherever

Use lightest line you dare, I prefer fluro. It’s a finesse lure. Go somewhere with clear shallow water and watch how it moves. Work it along the bottom bouncing with different rhythms like a crayfish, or slow reel and small movements to mimic a baitfish. Somewhere you can see and practice is helpful. 👍 tight lines.

    Awesome content!!! This brings back some memories from kayaking that I used to do in small rivers like this one with my less fancy Sea Eagle 330 in France and Switzerland: rivers such as La Loire, Ain and La Sarine all have a similar vibe like this river. This video makes me want to do it again!

      @@WesWherever The trip on La Loire was my favorite one. La Loire is wide and shallow and slowly meanders through a beautiful countryside with pastures and small forests. I also camped on a small island in the river but quite a bit bigger than yours. So relaxing! I started from Roanne and kayaked about 40 miles to Digoin. I would love to explore more of La Loire. In France, they have quite a good railway network so logistics with an inflatable kayak is not so complicated.

    It's kind of a random question, but how do you like the seat for your kayak? I just bought a sea eagle kayak and am curious if their stock seat provides good back support

    • @WesWherever
      @WesWherever  2 месяца назад +1

      It's a pretty good seat I would say. It's a high back though, so it certain PFD's that are designed for low back seats (like mine) will press on it, and add a bit of discomfort. Butt will probably be hurting after a couple hours, but I've found that to happen with most kayak seats I've tried. What's nice with the Sea Eagle is that you can throw in a camp chair for a higher, comfier seating position if you don't plan on doing a lot of aggressive paddling/distance. I used my Nemo Moonlite chair in it when I stayed on the kayak for 24 hours, and it was super comfy!
