Those mosquitoes are straight from hell! I could see and hear them in the video. Keeping calm and collected while an army of mosquitoes and flies are attacking you is probably the biggest challenge. They are the most relentless creatures on earth. Great video! 👍

There are fish that swim along the shore in search of food. It is possible to construct a “fence” perpendicular to the shore that leads into the mouth of the M-trap. The fence directs swimming fish into the trap and makes bait more effective.

@@steamer2k319 Ive seen fish cruising the shoreline at night, right up against the shore ambushing. I think Doug means the fence comes straight out from the entrance, pointing toward the deeper water. So any fish cruising deeper gets led into that entrance! 100% going to try this in a future video!

I love frog legs especially cooked over a camp fire lol. So I probably would of made a gig/spear when it started getting dark. And then made a little fire torch and commenced to stalking the bull frogs. You can also get worms and use a stick and your fishing line and hook and dangled it in front of them to catch them

@@TheBearEssentials zatarans Louisiana Cajun fish fry, that is the best breading to fry them in that I've found in stores. Some people online have some really good recipes to mix up for breading them in but if you want minimal effort and good taste the Louisiana Cajun fish fry breading is the best to me

Oooo I LOVE white pine tea! First had it at Genesee Country Village and Museum. I live in the country, surrounded by woods, but haven't found a white pine yet to get more needles, but i haven't tried very hard looking either.
And every time there was a frog, I'm shouting at my phone to you: "FROG LEGS!! FROG LEGS!" When i was a kid, my sisters and i captured several nice bullfrogs and cooked up the legs on a camping trip. Tasted like chicken 😁

@@TheBearEssentials As a matter of fact, YES, yes I do! As a historian, I LOVE old cookbooks. I have a 1909 edition of the Washburn-Crosby Gold Medal Cookbook, acquired thru my hubby's grandmother. On page 29, I have THREE recipes for Frog Legs! Here's the most simple one:
"Frog Legs: The green marsh frogs furnish the best hams, as they are more tender and have less of the strong muddy flavor. They are generally liked fried. Pare off the feet and truss them by inserting the stump along the shin of the other leg. Put them with salt, pepper and lemon juice to steep for an hour, then drain and roll in flour, then in beaten egg and in fine bread crumbs. Fry to a light brown in hot fat. Serve with fried parsley."
Now, here's some other fun stuff: I want you to do a Google search for this: "Henriette Davidis' practical cook book internet archive" (the quotation marks aren't necessary, and yes, that's the way it is spelled, and the last two words are the site the book is located on-the Internet Archive). It should be the first thing that pops up. When you get to this free online historical cookbook (The subtitle should be: "German national cookery for American kitchens : a practical book of the art of cooking as performed in Germany"), go to page 228. And BOOM, you'll have a whole chapter with recipes for Turtle Soup, Snail Soup, Snails in Sauce, Snail Salad, Ragout of Frog Legs, Frog Leg Pie, Roast Badger, Bear's Paws, and even Roast Beaver Tails!!
And may I add, I think your subscribers would love a collab with perhaps a RUclips channel that does wilderness survival and/or wilderness foraging. I remember seeing a PBS series one time of a chef who teamed up with a foraging specialist, and they foraged wild stuff, then the chef made a gourmet meal from it all. It was REALLY unique and interesting. I see there's a channel called The Wooded Beardsman, and it looks like he has killed and cooked some pretty interesting things! I'm sure there are other channels that you might already know of that would be a great fit for that kind of collab, if you were so inclined. In any case, I can't wait to see if you end up cooking something 'interesting' on your next trip, lol!

This was an awesome video. Great job making the most out of a tough situation, and handling it with a positive attitude. It’s also cool to see how much better you are with the bow drill!
Just my own 2 cents: I'd focus completely on that fire before ever expending energy on fish. If you don't get that fire, you can't cook the fish and you can't rehydrate without the risk of getting sick. That sun moves mighty fast in the sky when daylight is essential to getting something done.

I always like to use a small amount of dried rabbit, deer, elk or even moose droppings in my pitch glue. I call it “poo glue” and find that the fibers in the droppings help the the “glue” to bond stronger due to the additional strength of the processed fibers 👍🏼
This is a really great way of making the glue! Apparently animal fat is another good addition. I suppose it all depends on what you have and how brittle vs flexible you need it. Thx for the comment

People smarter than me would have made a "wick" instead of spending all those calories making fire the next day. How long did that take you anyway? Me, about 45 minutes! And props for not fake-catching a fish you brought with you like some other channels do, ha!

Mm not really worth it to eat that tiny guy. If you had a whole bunch, maybe. And yes it’s edible but truly not really worth it.
If you had a bunch, maybe, but I would have opted to use it as bait and try to get crayfish or brook trout!

You have to purify it, there are parasites and bacteria - especially giardia, which will make you very very sick.

I mean...in my country,this would have several issues/problems.
Everything are soaking wet. Really wet .
And its COLD .
And you can fish for days,with no fish.
Eat able plants , not really ...its to cold .
But ! We will not be to thirsty ,its a lot of water, very clean.
And we dont have many dangerous bugs and critters. (But then again, we wont get a lot of protein from critters either).
Sigh...

Cool video especially because you started a fire with basically nothing, major props! Though I would have more activity fished that worm if I wanted food. Also, I think the patch would work better from the outside for a long term hold. Maybe add a portion of your shirt with the sap to both sides to secure it in the long term.

If there were paper birch on the island I would have made some birch tar, and used a bit of bark as a patch too.

Where are you? In Northern Quebec and Ontario, water in lakes is pure, you don't need to boil it. Just stay far enough from the land, in the middle of the lake or river, and you're OK.

Nice techniques! I remember using the pine pitch patch myself, but instead of mixing in black char, I spread the pitch first then hit it with a coating of white ash powder. It creates a pretty smooth hard surface. But it might not have worked in this case because you needed it to be hardened on both sides. I also would have "smoke bathed" before sleeping, hoping that might help keep the bugs away. And why, oh why, didn't you bank your fire instead of going through the bow drill hassle again the next day? Also would have fashioned a makeshift bobber to keep the worm and hook from simply sinking to the bottom. Don't know if that would have made a difference, but there was lots of wood available. I really enjoyed the video and agree it could have been longer and still interesting.

I have always been womdering if there is a video where someone can show how to survive in the wild if you have food allergies. I have quite a few such as seafood and lactose intolerance and GERD. @The Bear Essentials Can you make a video about that?
It would be tough, you would have to hunt big game pretty much.
Plants, like cattail, and starchy roots etc yield such low calories. About 7 per ounce, so you’d have to be eating like 20lbs of this a day to sustain, inner bark, berries etc, it’s just not a huge inflow bc of the effort to gather as well.
Fishing can usually be a difference maker- or ofcourse, big game hunting.
Lactose wouldn’t be an issue out there, but all of this would entirely depend on your environment.
The best survival strategy in my opinion is to focus on water and actually not eat any carbs. Or minimal - so your body goods into ketosis and burns your fat stores. You can last a long time on that- you’ll lose 0.5-1lbs a day, but generally you can expect to survive 3 weeks like this and you’ll hopefully get reacted in that time. Shelter + water most important!

Food is a major need. Hopefully next time you get enough to sustain you (remember, foraging can sometimes provide some food surprises!)

Absolutely, in Labrador I went 9 straight days, covering 80km with a 60lbs pack before getting any food at all! You can last a long time without. About a month, even more if your idle.

Is there tree sap you can burn to create a seal for the hole in your boat? Or is that only with special tree sap?
Pretty much, the sap is sort of the viscous part - it’s the pitch that is more solidified that makes better “glue” when combined with charcoal or best case scenario- animal fat

A foot of flex tape carries better than a roll of duct tape and has a stronger bond almost permanent

@@TheBearEssentials No......The same company flex seal makes a tape sold right next to it. Flex tape sold in a roll at Walmart,.. anywhere.. About 6ins wide? Dif colors. Cut a foot section and put it in kit. Cut sections of that piece for a longer repair or use whole foot long piece. It's got a gooey sticky adhesive and a plastic outer side making it waterproof. Careful not to fold it together you cannot pull it apart. Perfect for the canoe repair it'll stick to anything including itself and you can apply it underwater. It's not that thick but used like duct tape it works better, duct tape never holds. You can macgyver it, I used it around a leaky horizon pipe in a basement. Put a flex tape patch over the hole to seal it, cut open a soda can and used the flat aluminum can side as a small patch for strength, cut a larger 2nd tape patch put it over the 1st tape and aluminum patch by an inch or two all sides. It was a permanent fix
