I would like to comment on the VEPR in case anyone on here is considering buying one. Like Rex I have looked over weapons and ammo with the idea of improving both since the 60's-70's. And I have worked/examined the 12ga. VEPR. Like all weapons the VEPR has some good ( very good) and poor qualities. And anyone who wants to use it as a go to weapon needs to understand the "bad" because the bad is very bad. But, like I said, I make efforts to improve and might have the answers needed to improve, or eliminate, the bad. The good.... When loaded and used in a timely fashion ( and with the correct ammo) this weapon is far more dangerous than most might ever image at first glance. Its a street sweeper. I can also talk about ammo that can be created that renders extreme lethality at extreme distances. And ammo that can be bought over the counter that delivers good range. The greatest range I have found comes from what I call the spider web round, using fairly large buckshot. Anyone who has worked with, improved, or created ammo can probably figure out what I am talking about. Range for this buckshot round is certainly 150 yards plus, while offering the good (but tight) pattern that we have all come to expect from a shotgun. Over the counter, #4 buckshot has rendered the greatest range when targeting deer size animals. In a 3 inch shell, the 41 (24 cal. pellets) can kill out to 100 yards. I probably wouldn't count on that range, but it will do it, I promise. Now lets look at the VEPR's problems and how we might improve or eliminate them. First it has a few features that are unwanted by me, so these are personal preferences. One is the sights. It comes with rifle sights, ouch. Who in the world wants SLOW, precision type rifled sights on a shotgun? Makes no sense. A red dot/green dot or other type of sighting device can also be used, but none are as good as the old vented rib with a bead...in my opinion. ( I can also badger some of these sights but my comments are on the VEPR shotgun for now.) The worse part of the VEPR,( that keeps it from being a stand alone weapon) is found in the magazine(s). A shotgun is normally thought of as a quick to grab home defense type weapon. A weapon that can lay near the bed at the ready. But this will not work with the VEPR. If this shotgun is pre-loaded and waiting at the ready, it may/will not function when the time comes to use it. The spring loaded magazines (in time) will bend/distort the common plastic shotgun shell to the point they will not function in this weapon. How long it takes to distort might depend on the rigidity of the individual shell. So we can only talk in generalizations. If I left my VEPR fully loaded for a few weeks, it "might" still function, but I would not trust it, especially in a situation that was a bit scary. So how can we improve on this massive problem? I have not tested my idea yet ( because of expense and the no need situation). But this is it for those who want to give it a try. Back in the day some shotgun ammo was made with brass hulls. And I have been able to find a few of these empty shells, and I found a few that are already loaded ( expensive). If the initial magazines are loaded with these "brass" shells they "might" be able to stand up to the magazines springs for months/years, just like the brass cartridges of a rifle. Maybe that is. An idea is only an idea until tested over and over again. The magazines themselves are easy to load with the exception of the drum. It is time consuming and only allows for the 2 3/4 inch shells. The stick magazines on the other hand are fairly quick and easy to load. And they accept the more dangerous 3 inch shells. With all things being equal, I can see where some people might choose stick mags ( holding maybe 12 shells each) over the drum that holds 25ish rounds, because it is far more difficult to load. Note, the drum might not distort as quickly as the stick mags. It needs to be tested. Unless this shotgun is used as a squirrel plinker on the back 40, find a solution for the problem or at least understand that it does exist. Don't sleep tight thinking you have the most fierce hand held weapon on the planet (which it might be under the right conditions and with the right ammo) only to discover it will only fire one shell ( the one in the barrel) and then jam up for what might be the rest of your life. With fresh ammo, this shotgun functions impressively. I have never seen it jam with fresh ( un-distorted) ammo. And yes, some of the mags require a bit of jiggling when slapping them home, but I don't see that as a big deal if its practiced a bit before hand. Sometimes, leaving a stick type magazine one shell less than its maximum capacity can, in some cases, make the magazine easier to slam home. Test this with all your magazine fed weapons. Don't trust the max. loaded magazine will load as easy as those that have one less shell/cartridge in them. Try them to be sure.
Cool. My komrade doesn't like the big stick mags. Where do we find the bent" charging handles? I don't like having to load on an open bolt that doesn't stay open...my 870 is still my go to.
I recommend checking the Carolina Shooter’s Supply site for the Galil-style upswept charging handle. Edit: I just checked and they only seem to have a weld-on upswept charging handle now. I had previously gotten a bolt-on version that seems pretty solid since I used red loctite and really torqued it down.
