- MasterChef sees chefs competing all season for a chance at $250,000, and the reality show has grown into an extremely successful franchise, with iterations all over the world. Sadly, with almost any popular reality show comes a whole slew of controversy. We know that almost every reality show is a little bit fake, but the kids’ version of MasterChef has faced some serious accusations of revealing the challenges in advance, and that’s just the beginning of the franchise’s issues. From killing animals to limited knowledge of foreign cuisine, let’s take a look at some big scandals that shook MasterChef to its core.

I have no issues with the children contestants knowing ingredients in advance. This should be fun for them not a stressful time. As for cooking or acting lessons that’s on their parents. The show isn’t doing that.
Dee Marie Dubois getting 8 years old to be stressful is a scandal itself

Josh's case isn't a scandal, it's a tragedy. As someone who suffers from mental illness myself and a bipolar mother, you CANNOT blame a cooking competition for mental illness it is most likely a build up of experiences throughout his life that triggered his schizophrenia and I feel that Masterchef was misrepresented in this video AND mental illnesses was misrepresented

It's actually a known fact that people on MasterChef have time to study and practice recipes. They literally get taught how to cook a lot of things before they do the pressure tests.
Right?! It’s so obvious when most of the contestants suddenly know how to cook with special techniques. Do viewers really think they know how to do all that before the show

For that Malaysian dish, Gordon Ramsay would have said that the dish was great. He himself went to Malaysia to learn with the people on how to properly cook it. You can also watch the video of him doing that too. Obviously the judges at that time are idiots
Nah mamak.....gtfo. Dirty, greedy, despicable bunch of people. The dish is sh1t.
@@kennethhhhhh9125 Oh god, we still have those kind of mentality nowadays?
I am totally fine with the fact that the children know ahead of the time the challenges and for them to prepare. Even with preparation, it's still quite a huge challenge for the kids. I also don't see any issue regarding the kids taking cooking and acting lessons. It just shows their dedication and that they are really working hard to succeed. MasterChef didn't even need to hide that fact.
I don’t think the kids knowing about the challenge and having lessons is that big of a deal I mean their just kids I wouldn’t want mine going on the show unless they had some idea of what they were doing
Or the adults for that matter, but we already knew that it's all staged, you have to be an idiot not to know that all cooking shows such as Masterchef, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares etc are fully scripted.
Sounds like the narrator competed there but failed and is angry

So sorry to hear of Josh. I had a daughter who had mental issues too. She took her life similarly too.

I’ve been told by someone who used to work on Masterchef US that all the contestants, not just kids, know what the upcoming main cooking challenges are ahead of time. I also asked if the contestants can keep or are given recipes, to which she said she’s not sure. But I would imagine making something like cake would be impossible without the exact measurements at hand.
The contestants were learning & read books. Also they learn to cook before & after shooting & try new recipes between. At least that was in Masterchef Season 8 Indonesia
Season 5: Leslie being thrown out at Top 3 for using salt instead of sugar in his cake EVEN THOUGH his cake rose properly. It's all 100% scripted and staged

I think the masterchef junior "staging" point had me pleasantly surprised because if professional cooking and acting lessons are provided by masterchef (not sure if that is what is implied) it would actually make masterchef junior a well worth experience, think doing well in school to enter a prestigious university for a better education. I think it actually opens doors in both industries for the kids who have shown they have talent
Thank you for sharing this post. I greatly appreciate it. My heart hurts over the loss of Mark. God bless.
You think these home cooks are just naturally brilliant chefs? It's a well-known fact that during the months of shooting, all the cooks get cooking lessons, before challenges they get targeted lessons about that challenge, everyone has the same opportunity but if they screw up the dish they're gone just the same.
yeah. i believe so. there are so many recipes they need to know which can be really hard especially during elimination test. the contestants said that they never done for eg. souffle/creme brulee but i am surprised how they can make them perfectly.
Thank you for putting the number on the screen for us it saved me today
5:32...did she say "JOHN Marks"?
This is why I haven't watched one of their videos in months. They can't proofread and post 10 videos a week about Costco pizza
Yes. Talk about lazy and disrespectful. Did she ever even watch the show???
I hear what I think are a lot of positive attitudes to the children knowing the dishes ahead of time. Bravo! Another thing people have to remember is that even the oldest of these kids haven't been around long enough to be exposed to the kinds of foods that they are expected to come up with, never mind knowing the cooking techniques needed for some of them. The amazing thing is that fun or not, they are able to hang in there and not give up. How many times when one of the kids gets totally flustered because something unexpected happened that one of the judges went over and helped them get back on track? You don't see that on the adult version, except perhaps when they are not in the middle of a service. Also, remember that much of what happens on the adult version with Gordon is in large part an act. He is the "spice" that puts fire to the show. I know what it's like to work in a restaurant during a service, and while the chef I worked under wasn't as obnoxious as Gordon, it was stressful. I think the videos like this are not good because essentially the people who make them and put them out are gossip mongers, and the shows are an easy target. I recently went through a whole bunch of the MCJ episodes, and something somewhere else where I actually heard genuine laughing from Gordon. Let's face it while these people may be judges for the show they are also actors as well. This makes them easy targets for pot shots. It's normal to take people at face value, it's what we do all the time to assess who/the way they are. How many stories have been out there of someone who started harassing or threatening an actor when those actions were really aimed at the character they played and what they may have done?
The last part of the video is so sad. My heart goes out to the family.
I can’t believe people have a problem with that one woman killing that crab, it’s absolutely stupid
Rip Josh...had no idea. This was just heartbreaking

Worse of all Torode responded to the criticism through Twitter by writing: "Love this!! Brilliant how excited you are all getting", instead of apologizing or apologizing to the contestant who was wrongfully eliminated
And even worse In response to the social media fury, john Torode, again tried to divert the focus via his Twitter account, tweeting that maybe rendang was Indonesian. Perhaps being satirical, Torode also added “namaste” in the end, sparking even more mockery since the greeting isn’t commonly used in either Malaysia or Indonesia. The tweet was subsequently deleted, presumably to avoid further misunderstandings.
Seriously how the hell this guy still a judge?
You know how ramsay in an episode of kitchen nightmares say in a restaurant episode 'grasshopper also' "if you serve this shepherd's pie in dublin, they would shoot you"

The second one is Absolutely ridiculous, the contestants knew what was expected of them, if she can’t kill a live animal then don’t go on a show where they expect you to be able to butcher a live animal.
I appreciate that the kids have a heads up. They're children. They have a whole lifetime of things to get sideswiped by... anything less than a warning would be abusive.
George Calombaris’s story, I thought it was him asking for more money.. Jesus! I really liked the Aussie one.
Is this a surprise? I used to work as a cook in different restaurants when I was younger and the big chefs used to harassed me and treat everyone like poop. It was horrible.
For as much as the host claims to know about the show and it's contestants, she called the guy at 5:30 "John Marks" when his name is clearly Josh as it says in every shot he's in.
Wow I didn't knew any of that!! I just feel so dumb.
Real talk - Classy move to put the NSPL number at the end. Seriously. More people need more access to more resources. This helps. Thank you.
If they can't take criticism "which is good to become good at something" then they should leave and not joining the journey
There’s a difference though between criticism and constructive criticism. I agree with what you’re saying, but not all the contestants receive the same words of advice. Some just get flat out roasted.
It's more about a mix between criticism and praise, especially for kids. You can't teach people without a positive note to it. You'll notice that this is very clear on MCJ. At first I was kind of upset about the pressure these kids are put under in the challenges where they are feeding a bunch of people with a time limit (natural in a restaurant or in an event like a wedding). I suspect that with the kids, there's a lot going on that we don't see so far as the adults relating to them in a positive way.
I'm loving the comments cause everyone can watch the show or the interviews that go into context about these "scandals". But everyone just wants to complain about something
Wow. I hated hearing that about Josh. Seemed like a beautiful soul. May he Rest In Peace.
But what he said about “Rendang” is true. Never ever find any crispy Rendang and as you know Rendang is heritage food from Padang Indonesia. Slow cooking mostly beef in very rich spices and coconut milk. How come it’s going to be crispy if you cook that way?
baru tahu Kalo rendang bisa kriuk🤣
Even in Europe, specifically the Netherlands, we all know what rendang is. It's complete ignorance and unbecoming of someone who claims to be a judge level masterchef. Rendang is literally a stew, if it's crispy, it must be at least 10 days old... and rancid
If you know you are going to make a stew and know it isn't going to be crisp, why leave the chicken skin on? Sincere question here, because I love chicken but even I think the skin is vile if it isn't crisp
Damn I remember watching josh in high school and I was rooting for him. Sad story, RIP big fella
I remember teacher told us, a good journalism offer views from various angles and without judgement, in order to help people understand the truth. Oops, this piece is not powerful enough.
The article suggested by this video is unpredictable long. Comment space could not be reached. It is noticed the wordings on that article is beyond the purpose of providing constructive motion. Negative energy spread out, which pose psychological risk to innocent.

I wish I could believe in that suicide hotline. Called it 3 times - trying to help others. One out of 3 was great. The other times, a robot answered, put me on hold to transfer me where I was ignored for over an hour before giving up. I pray they help the next ones who need them.
That first one. If there was harrassment dont you think there would be a SHIT TON of people agreeing. With how many contestants they have wouldn't more than just one or a few come up and say it?
I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the kids to have time to practice for challenges since they’re kids
Not to mention otherwise would just be bad tv like what would a complicated dish look like from a 12 year old for the first time
They all have time to practice for challenges not just the kids. How many times did you hear in Masterchef, "I have never done this before?" and just in a short time they cook a perfect dish even though it was their "first" time, even better than the ones they have worked on that dish. Cooking shows are staged, even Ramsey's "firey" temper in Hell's Kitchen.
Are you serious? How the hell do you go on Master Chef and not expect to kill a live animal for the meal?
How about the fact that none of the winners get royalties from the cookbook they made?
I worked on a few reality tv shows... they were my biggest regrets. Food network called me to be on show in 2013 for the “Next Food Network Star”
Happy Hour Girl Kola ok
The network need a fluffer
The "staged" I am convinced also applies to the adult contestants. These contestants are supposed home cooks, cooking out of hobby with no formal training and limited access to proper culinary principles; its hard to convince me that a Master Chef contestant that is a dentist, carpenter or stay at home parent can able to make elaborate dishes within the duration of the show, there has to be backstage light coaching and guidance done by the chef judges or producers about what the next episode will be or basic cooking knowledge, even just an IDEA is more than enough, so that the contestant wont be totally dumbfounded and clueless on what they will cook during episode taping.
I can't see the "scandals" here. Master Chef can't be held responsible for the inadequacy of the contestants, in any form. It's a show that contestants choose to join and, by implication, abide by its rules.
I called the suicide hot line 7 times in a row and then blocked there number...
That was a dark ending jesus christ.

Creditors voted to liquidate Australian MasterChef Judge George Calombaris’ empire of 12 restaurants (lost $20.7 million in 3 years, only had $389 in the bank account).
Calombaris was a terrible judge because he could not handle eating any spicy chilli peppers for 10 years on the show (and he never learned to eat it either). He also physically assaulted someone at a football game who yelled out about staff being underpaid.
Calmbaris didn't beat the crap out of him because he was yelling about staff being underpaid...if someone said something about your family, would you just let it go?
It's a competition, not a beauty contest. People will get hurt, and told things that they might not like or be able to deal with. It is not the show's fault over personal issues, as I am sure they give out applications and interviews where you're asked if you can deal with pressure or high stress times. As for MasterChef junior, they are kids!
2:51 "In hindu, it's believed that every living being has a soul". First of all, hinduism, and second of all, doesn't everyone think that?
@Arid so you agree about the Hindus. And I disagree about Abraham, because you are talking about modern scripture and I am talking about original beliefs. Original scripture had reincarnation, and that was removed and the bible was rewritten at he council of nicea. There are loads of books that are not considered now but that are a part of the belief system, like the books of Enoch. So I discern those that blindly hold to scripture from those who see the human meddling in an old belief system to try to identify the real message. The fundamental respect for all life was there, even people of other religions.

@@tomekstec981 In India, food is related more to geography than religion. Hindus of all castes from the coastal belt eat a lot of seafood. Hindus from the hills eat a lot of meat. The states in the north-east are known for an extensive array of meats. The states falling along the fertile plains have a predominantly vegetarian diet. Eating meat is not moving away from the original scriptures. It's more about what is available.
