Larkin Poetic Justice.
Flowers After Rainfall: Several shrieks and giggles. Me: I concur. Wholeheartedly! 🙌🔥🤘
Another great sister act! Slide guitar/lap steel
Good to see you reacting to my other two favorite music making sisters again! Even before they formed Larkin Poe they had a band called 'The Lovell Sisters' with their older sister Jessica, definitely worth checking out aswell. Go see them if you get the chance, fantastic musicians live and endlessly entertaining to watch onstage! Had a meet and greet also at their last concert I went to and they are some of the nicest people you can meet.
Hey - thanks for introducing me to a new band. That was some nice old school rock and roll. Great energy and riffs. And as others have said, good ears picking up on influences. Thanks.
The guitar sound on this is the same type of effects pedal as The Warning used on Automatic Sun, it’s called a Fuzz pedal - very distorted and badass!
I’m a big fan of LP, Mad as a hatter is really good and has a special meaning to them!
Larkin Poe and The Warning are my two favorite bands, saw TW twice last week and Automatic Sun hits like a freight train live! Flowers reacted to Mad as a Hatter already and definitely check it out if you haven't, her reaction is very genuine and honest to see.
Yes, as Stuski666 said it is a response to IPASOY. You will also recognize some blues influence from Albert King's "Born Under A Bad Sign" :-)) Oh yeah, you could refer to their music as Roots Rock 'n' Roll.
Rebecca wrote it, and has said that it's a tribute to the Albert King song "Born Under a Bad Sign". I take her word for it. She announced it when she was introducing it on the 2023 tour.
Thank you for reacting to another of my favorite bands, Larkin Poe. I think of their music as fresh take on the roots of the music of working people in the U.S., including but not limited to the blues and what became country music in the twentieth century. They’re legit and awesome.
*reacting to
Hi Jessica, you remember right this was a response to Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You". This is from their Grammy winning Album "Blood Harmony". Thanks for another great reaction.❤
nailed it! 😆
Their Grammy for 'Blood Harmony' was so well deserved, love that album! It was overdue though since 'Venom and Faith' and 'Self Made Man' also deserved one in my humble opinion. 😇
I remember her introducing it as a reply to SJH. She says this on the "Rockpalast" video of their gig in Cologne. There is also this from a Guitar Player magazine interview.
Rebecca, you wrote “Bad Spell” as an homage to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.” What are some techniques you use to touch on the original without copying it?
In terms of form and construction, the songs are very different, but we tried to capture the same energy in the recording
Rebecca Lovell
REBECCA In terms of form and construction, the songs are very different, but we tried to capture the same energy in the recording. I wrote the lyrics from the same vantage point and tried to create the same kind of unsettling mystery. By using the imagery of spell in the title, I was able to tell a story from where I imagined Hawkins was coming from.
Not going to fall out over this though, its agreat.song😊
@@Stuski666 I could be wrong. It happened once before. 🤪 I think I may have mistaken the lyrics of one of their songs, ( Trouble in Mind ) "Born Under a Bad Sign, like Albert King, he's got the matchbox blues, I like to sing" for the introduction we're discuussing. I apologize! I've seen that Rockpalast Concert video multiple times. Apologies to Mr. Hawkins, also!
I can see the mix up😊 One of the many things that I love about LP is the way they often pay homage to those that have come before in their song writing. Things like "Papa's got a new bag, he gave it to Mr Brown and Charlie got him a fiddle before the Devil went down" from Back Down South. That's another song I think Jessie would enjoy.
If they are ever in your area, go. Pure joy from beginning to end.
If you like to watch Megan play slide,or either one, check out any on the songs on their RUclips cover channel. The videos are just one camera on them, and they are recorded as one shot videos. Usually you can get a good view of Megan's playing, and just get to enjoy their interpretation of tunes. I enjoy many of the covers more than the original versions.
Absolutely true, their 'Tip of the Hat' cover series is amazing! They always pay respect to the original whilst still making it their own, Megan must have covered at least half an orchestra with her slide by now after more than 200 covers. One of my favorites is 'Off the Wall' (ruclips.net/video/35GL2G5ThHk/видео.html) where they record a beat using stuff in their hotel room, so much fun to watch.
There is an awesome cover of Three Dog Night's " Never Been to Spain", with some epic slidework by Megan, on Julie Meyers channel.
@@Incognito-8884 They have a cover of "Black Betty", a capella, in a bathroom! And they have a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love", with backing by the Nu-Deco Orchestra ( actually, they made a whole album)
I hear twist off of Albert Kings bad sign too, put a spell on is from senders POV this and bad sign are the receiving end of da mojo.
Has no one mentioned/noticed your uncanny resemblance to Rebl (Rebecca)? You could probably be a member of Larkin Poe just based on good looks!
I love their southern American accent.
It is southern America?
❤ from Northeast England ❤
Georgia
@Robert_Herring
Georgia, that's the south, right?
I'll check the map...
Aye, it is the South... where the humans still live.
❤️ from Northeast England ❤️
