Regarding your chickens. Encouraging a chicken to lay eggs where you want vs where they want is pretty challenging. From the brief look at the situation, three suggestions, 1. Put same bedding material in nesting box as what is on the floor. I could not tell for sure but it looked like the nesting boxes were a little shy of bedding compared to the floor. 2. When you see eggs on the floor move them to a nesting box and in the nesting boxes add some fake eggs (wooden or if you dont have fake eggs use a ball that is close to the eggs diameter - like a golf ball). you want the chickens that have not laid their eggs yet to see the eggs in the nesting boxes. They will go where other eggs are. 3. Find the chicken that is first laying eggs on the floor and put that one in the stew pot. It is a devient and should be replaced. Hope this helps! One fellow Tennessee resident to another!

Great recommendations! I’m adding one, for any accidental rooster acquisitions, raise until big enough to put in the stewpot and turn them into chicken pot pie or chicken and dumplings. 😉

Nathan, thanks for conjuring up memories from my childhood.
I was raised up around my grandma on my mom's side. My mom and dad built a house on an acre lot that was deeded to them by my grandparents. I was at my grandma's house every day.
Grandma raised chickens. She would order chicks at the local feed store and the chicks would be delivered by the mail carrier each year until around 1957 when the USPS stopped offering that service. After that she had to drive back to the feed store to get her chicks when they came in.
My grandpa built the chicken house and the nesting boxes were about 4 feet off of the floor along one wall of the hen house and were made of sawmill lumber. There was a 1 X 6 board that ran across in front of the boxes that provided a "landing platform" for when the hens wanted to launch from the floor to go to nest. I see your boxes don't have any kind of ledge or landing spot for the girls to use and they may have just got tired of having to jump straight for a nest box. Maybe if you fix them some kind of a landing platform board they might get their interest back for the boxes you have. I bet you can find somebody nearby with a sawmill who would be glad to help you out. 😁

With all the, so called, problems related to weather, the best way to reduce seat time mowing, is to get rid of the grass all together. Native grasses and plants, or pollinator friendly crops would help. If you have people in the area who have bee hives, a clover mix would greatly increase their yield, still look relatively neat and also have roots that go down deeper into the soil to help prevent erosion. Never was fond of grass. Hated mowing it as a kid, because I had to. Put up with it as an adult because it got me out of the house for a while. I still never water any grass. Mother Nature can take care of that part. Less rain, less growth, less need for mowing. To use your terms, Did I mention how much I hate grass?

    • @jott5940
      @jott5940 2 месяца назад +2

Chickens like privacy so they will find a spot that is secluded. Try putting some material strips on the sides of the front loosely leaving a small gap. As far as the eggs in the corner every chicken farmer should have one of those soft cup style EZ reach and grab pickup tools for collecting eggs in hard to reach areas. They really save your knees and back.

Regarding the eggs, not sure why they stopped laying in the boxes but you can try to add some bedding to the nesting boxes and try putting in a few fake eggs.

    • @knlstam
      @knlstam 2 месяца назад

Agree on the fake eggs. Chickens have an instinct to lay their egg where there are already eggs. It only takes one wayward chicken to get them to switch to another location. I use golf balls as fake eggs to encourage them to stick with the nest boxes. My chickens are free range, so there is always a hen or two that still go out looking for greener egg laying pastures.

Your chickens are looking for a bit of privacy for their egg-laying. Turn the nest boxes around and put them about a foot out from the wall. Just think about how a wild bird makes a nest where predators can’t find it or reach it, that’s what your hens are thinking about.

You might try rakeing the shavings out of the corners of your henhouse put new straw in your laying boxes and see if they will go back to laying in them chickens being creatures of habit will keep laying eggs on the floor unless you change the reason why they are laying there you might also lay a small area of poultry wire to make it an uncomfortable area to lay eggs but there is a reason why they changed to begin with so I would add new straw to entice them to start using the nest boxes again

With my hens, typically one will start laying in a "hidden" nest, and I was told it's because they want to keep their eggs (trying to defeat the daily egg thief). Then some others will follow suit and lay in her hidden nest. I simply put something in their nest (a bag of feed, bail of pine shavings etc..) to detour them from said spot, and that has worked so far.

Nathan, (one more) If the chickens are going to continue
lay eggs, under the thing?/whatever, build a frame to fit
the space, with hardware cloth attached under it. Put it
in place and fill with wood chips. Now, when they lay eggs
back there, all you need to do is slide the frame out, get
the eggs and slide the frame back. No crawling under. 😁✌🖖

been getting a lot of rain here in SW Arkansas as well, guess we are just sharing with the VOL. state. :) and more expected next week , winds here for tomorrow 4/5 predicted to be from 10 -15 with gust into the 20's and 30's , so will pass that along as well , as far as what to do with the Walnut sawdust , was going to suggest to put it on the banks of your creek area , then thought about leaching into the creek and it may not be a good thing , might want to consider if there is a outfit that takes sawdust, know my granddad used to get loads of sawdust and then take it to the pulpwood plant to be used to make paper ...... and considering that you are in the area ( loosely) that I grew up in , know that pulpwood is a thing there and they May take Walnut sawdust as well, if there is still that type of production still going on in the area.

Raise the nesting boxes 6-12 inches and add more bedding they like the nesting boxes about the same height as the perch and if there isn’t enough bedding in the box they will go somewhere more suitable instead of filling their own nest. Chickens can also do that if they don’t feel safe such as physically seeing the eggs taken from the boxes or if it’s too close to the chicken door. They don’t have the best memory so if that hasn’t been a problem for 2 years or so I would bet it’s mainly the bedding since they’ve also probably been the same height for 2 years as well. Also I’d only put straw in the boxes no wood chips or sawdust or anything. Be sure to put a lot of straw in there they will throw out what they don’t want.

Why does everyone seem scared of roosters? The rooster's job is to protect the hens. If he comes after you, he is protecting the hens.
I am 60 years old, and I grabbed my rooster by his neck when he came after me. I didn't hurt him. While I had his neck, I gained control of his feet. I laid him on his side until he went limp and let him up. I did have one I called Rocky that needed a 2nd session. When you let them up and they run at you, they need a 2nd session. If they get up and walk away looking back at you, congratulations, you asserted your dominance on the rooster. Never run from a rooster, you are only feeding his dominance and you are making it worse.
Every now and then I see my rooster acting like he wants to try me again, I walk right at him until he walks away. He knows better. A good rooster can save your hens from hawks or other predators.

I had this happen with my chickens years back Nathan. I was told that it’s a nesting instinct. In fact when it happened it was in the spring. And like you, I had to crawl back to collect some of the eggs. And it seemed that when one laid eggs under the nesting boxes, the others started to as well. So is this true? I don’t know but it happened a few times over the years. I do want to have chickens again and haven’t living in the woods with lots of chicken loving critters. Kind Thanks and Many Blessings! nesting boxes are all different there to low to the floor and you don't have a ledge running along front also you don't have enough of them grab some of your scrap timber and knock up some more better boxes and such then you will be right
    cheers

Chickens will try to lay in the most hidden secure places. You might tru to gather all the eggs and put a golf ball inescapable box as a nest egg.

the ones i always saw were up higher from the floor,,they may be scared of something, maybe a snake...i found snakes in the hen house all the time..,i would bring them up some about a foot, and put a camera in there a few nights to see if anything going on....there might be..again you might leave an egg in the box,,instead of taking them all..that might help to..chickens never forget where they always lay..

Get some fake ceramic eggs and put in the boxes. Mark them for your own reference. Some critter (that would be you) is stealing them so they're trying to hide them. Gotta leave one egg or they will move on you, hence the ceramic ones.

Maybe your chooks (adult birds laying eggs - chickens in australia means babys like you bought in) are getting clucky and wanting to raise some babys even though we know theyre not fertilised. The dont like you stealing their eggs so they lay them somewhere else trying to hide them from the egg thief! You may have problems introducing the new ckickens to the old chooks - pecking order and all that! Perhaps you should consider having a flock on the other property with a rooster and when the hens go clucky let them raise baby chickens. These could then replace your older chooks when you put them in the freezer!

a dog ball thrower works well for picking eggs off the ground however using a golf ball or a fake egg could work also put a blockade down in that corner to keep them from laying in the corner chickens like privacy while laying so you might install some curtains on the laying nests or maybe you have a snake coming in and out of the coop having 14 chickens you should be getting 10 or more depending on the age i have 15 and i get at least 12 a day sometimes 15

The cedar and yes I said cedar for to us that is what it is, is beautiful wood. Had my chickens to do because one went broody and occupied the nesting box. That doesn't seem to be your issue with the girls. Block off access to that back corner for a while, see if that doesn't help.

My parents and grandparents always had their nesting boxes off the floor. I should have paid more attention during my youth. It seems like they were about three foot above the ground. Made it easier for kids and adults to gather eggs. Never liked it when I got pecked by setting hens.

Hens want to keep them away from you "stealing" them. Maybe you could get some in-house chickens that way.... oh, you need a rooster, of course.
