I believe the song is about how although Madonna has grown spiritually, as a woman, as an artist, as a human being, she will only be defined by the general public and even people that know her personally, as things that she has either done or said in the past. She's also saying that the luxury of being forgiven or being able to make a mistake and not be defined by those mistakes, that we as private people get to have........she does not.......hence the lyric " your paradise is not for me".........meaning she will only be defined by some of her worst moments while we get a do-ovrr every time. It's actually quite sad that that is the way it is when you live a public life.

Thank you so much ladies for reacting to this exquisite piece of art by Madonna 👏🏻 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Paradise (Not For Me) is my favourite song from the 2000 album "Music" and one of my all-time favourite songs. For the past few months I have been "murdering this song to death" at work by playing it for 5 - 7 hours a day - no joke! Receiving compliments for the song is a daily occurrence for me, which is no surprise. People are always asking me who the singer is and they're always surprised when I tell them that it's Madonna!
I first heard this song back in 2000 and I can still remember being stopped in my tracks.
My favourite interpretation of this song is that it's about dying. "Paradise" as we all know is another name for "Heaven", and we don't all have the same idea of heaven. My idea of paradise will not necessarily be for you and vice versa.
The music video itself is a death ceremony. Madonna is getting ready to go to the "other side" which we finally see at the end of the video when she is led to the doors but which she must pass through alone. It's symbolic to how we all must leave this physical world on our own.
The battle we see occurring between the two people is a battle between life and death. At the end of the video, we see that death has won. When Madonna goes into "the Light", she opens her mouth and a brilliant bright red light escapes, which is her life force leaving her physical body.
In the lyrics, Madonna is trying to remember when she was young, but she can't. Yet she knows that when she's gone, she will always be remembered through her legacy that she will leave behind; "Into your eyes, my face remains."
In the chours, she's singing about the highs and lows, the ups and downs of life that everyone experiences. Madonna would also be singing about the highs and lows of fame. I love how when she sings "I've been so high" she sings high, and when she sings "I've been so down" she sings low. The chorus in this version also sounds more gentle. I would highly recommend that you both listen to the studio version which is over 6 minutes long! I think the length of the song is perfect because you just don't want it to end.
The version she performed live on her 2006 Confessions tour is also stunning, so do check that out too.
Thank you both once again. I absolutely love your reactions and your open-mindedness to Madonna's work. Keep up the amazing work! ❤
Love and Blessings to you both from Mark in Ireland 🇮🇪

I interpret this song as being about fame. This is a recurring theme in her body of work from now on. She reflects on fame in songs like this one, Let It Will Be, Rebel Heart, Hollywood and so many others. “Paradise” would be fame, and she talks about the ups and downs of it (I’ve been so high, up to the skies, down to the ground). She mentions she doesn’t know who she can’t trust (around me I don’t see who are the angels) and she talks about how her old image is stuck in people’s heads even though she keeps moving on with her life (my life goes on but not the same, into your eyes my face remains). The light above her head in the end could be understood as a spotlight. As for the video I can’t really talk much about it without giving spoilers of the show. But yes. It’s a preparation for the next segment. The concert is inspired by the book Drowned Worlds by JG Ballard and it’s like she’s getting ready to move on from the neo-punk post apocalyptic world and start the next civilisation, which is the Asian one.

Yaaaaay! You didn't skip this one.
When(if🤞🙏) you watch her Drowned World Tour(2001), this video will make more sense.
In January 2001, i got hired at a warehouse in Culver City, Ca. It was a miserable/mundane job. Probably one of thee worst jobs i've ever had.
There were days when Madonna's music would get me through it, and on to the next miserable workday.
I would sometimes wonder to myself,
what is Madonna up to these days?
    It wasn't until 2003,
i found out she filmed the video for Paradise, Not For Me at Culver City Studios...which was a few industrial buildings south of the warehouse i was working at!
I quit that job in 2002.
In 2003, Madonna held dancer auditions for then upcoming
Re-Invention Tour (2004) at the Debbie Allen Dance Studios which was on the SAME street block as the warehouse i worked at. It was one warehouse address over!
Yet more strange, random filming locations that
    i found myself near,
    that was Madonna related.

About the song, I feel that the song, aside telling MADONNA own personal fight (fame, ups and downs, desilusion, differents perspective of herself and also deceptions of a lover), but also resonates with those who feel out of place or in search of purpose.

@@OurAnxiousReactions I Wouldnt suggested for a reaction video just for you both to have the fuller experience of the song, I want to tell you so much about the song but it will come as an spoiler for the drowned world tour, this tour changes everything, Madonna will never let you think that you got the full picture of her and her work. and one last thing, if you ever complete the journey to present day then please listen to the albums in full, if not for reactions just for you to discover so much more about the context of her mind in each album, Music is extremely experimental, Bedtime Stories is a Journey like no other and the next album American Life the non singles let me speechless. Your reaction at the end actually made me laugh out loud for real. And yes, like Bedtime Story, this video is another one of those surreal videos that I really didn't get when it came out, but appreciate more as I've grown older. One of the many reasons I love Madonna is how she incorporates many other cultures and art into her music. In middle of nowhere Michigan, we didn't get to see things like that. So I never even thought about other cultures or appreciated art until Madonna opened up that world for me. She's the reason I took a college art class and fell in love with art. Anyway, yea, the end of this video is 😮.

This song is one of those hidden gems Madonna has in her albums, as you say, you’ll get the entire concept once you watch the drowned world tour.
Avoiding spoilers, for me this song is about the search and found of your inner light. It can be like being yourself, recognizing all the highs and lows throughout the journey that are necessary to achieve that. As Brenda says, sometimes we feel that we don’t change, but other times I look back and I realize I am a complete different person, the result of what I have experienced.

And just when i thought it wouldn’t get better: the live version on Confessions Tour had blown me away 🤍

The drowned world tour is interesting in that a major global pop star refuses to play “the hits” and focuses almost entirely on ray of light and music albums. You will hear lots of new songs from those albums in this tour. Don’t expect a lot of the oldies.

the way I see it - the 2 Asian girls re-present the "social pressure", they prepare her and lead her to the "light", but since it's not Her Light - she is burned at the end, so this Paradise was not for her and it basically kills her . Moral of the story - be yourself. cause if you only pretend that you're happy - it's gonna blow in your face one way or another .

If I remember this right, the song is about the ending of one’s life in the material world and the passing to another world. I do feel like she thinks in a different way than most people- hence the (Not For Me).
The French translation’s interesting because she’s saying she’s not an angel, but then maybe struggles with the burden of light (halo) over her head- which her fans insist is there, as their angel . . .

You’re going to love this live at the Drowned World Tour, it’s quite spectacular. But even better, she performs this live on her Confessions Tour (my fav tour), and jaws will hit the floor!

In Kabbalah, "light" is used to describe metaphysical divine emanations. I have only a very vague understanding of it, really, but The Light is one of the central concepts in Kabbalah and you'll note her reference it very specifically in lyrics both here and on future albums.

This is perhaps my favorite Madonna song, when you watch the concert you will see it in a different context. Regarding the song - it was the first song Madonna did with french producer Mirwais, he produced most of the Music album and follow-up album American Life. The song was first included on his album Production a few months prior to the Music album. Madonna, known for seeking out new producers had much success with William Orbit on Ray Of Light. Her collaboration with Mirwais some would claim has been hit or miss as he is prone to using a lot of vocal manipulation, in particular the vocoder which some mistake as auto tune. Once you move on to American Life you will see how it progressed and, once you get to her last album, she reunites with Mirwais and the vocal manipulation becomes overly extreme.

The Drowned World heavily contains album tracks from Ray of Light and Music albums, it's not like any of her other tours, very dark and moody presentation, even amongst fans they are divided over this show, you'll still enjoy it but you won't know majority of the setlist.

Love this ❤I forgot about this video , it is wild for sure .
If you want to put the song into context , she does an amazing version on her guitar in her confessions tour ( I know I’m jumping ahead in tours🙈) , but this version is amazing . She does some of the song as a duet with a singer called “Isac” whom she does a few singing collaborations with on that tour . Madonna does another version that’s once again unique and amazing. Isac sings the French part in Arabic I think it is , sounds amazing .Check it out❤ has more of melody in this version.

Theory Number 3: Another one that's only just occurred to me, but as the song uses religious imagery, and with Madonna's interest in ancient Jewish stories, as well as her knowledge of Bjork's material, it may be interesting. The (very, very, very unexplored) story of Adam's first wife - Lilith. Her desire for sexual dominance over her husband (she wanted to be "on top") led to her expulsion from Eden and led to a punishment of losing every single one of her children, giving her the title of The Mother of Evil and sometimes The Queen of Hell. The Bjork connection is that in 1997 she wrote and recorded a song with British electronic pioneers Plaid (formerly known as Black Dog) called Lilith, from the titular character's point of view, that gives a little of the story, served with ice cold takes on the death of her children and even almost pagan Moon chants and a big howl as Lilith transforms into the werewolf creature that is implied that she becomes. I am firing on all cylinders today, ladies hehehehehe

Glad your journey got back to the mainstream Madonna after that detour into her collab videos with Richie. The contrast is like day and night in terms of artistic vision, depth, messaging and spiritual impact.
This video is profoundly haunting, enigmatic and deeply melancholic. My main take is that it’s about how one faces death or how one transitions to giving up this material space with all its trials and come to a new reality of being-regardless of our religious belief about the after life. She may also be influenced at this time by her exploration of Eastern mysticism that made her seriously doubt most of the Christian belief in an after-life fate of either Paradise or Hell for believers depending on their moral conduct on earth.
There’s hints of the feudal era Japanese ritual of seppuku (suicide) where a trusted second assists by administering the coup de grâce blow with a slashing motion of a katana sword. The vertical opening with a bright Iight is the next life, the horizontal light forming a cross with the vertical evoked the Christian concept of the after life. There is a resignation, calmness and stoicism with the way she faced death-perhaps comforted by the thought of a much better next life-that evoked the Buddhist belief in the perpetual cycle of life/death/rebirth; but also of Christians who die in a state of grace or when facing martyrdom. In Christian traditional belief, the soul that animates the physical, leaves the body at death through the mouth with that “last breath” or giving up “the ghost”. In medieval figurative depictions of this-a white cloud (the spirit) leaves the body if the person died in a state of grace, and a black cloud if the person died in an unrepentant state of mortal sin where the person’s soul is condemned to eternal damnation. She made another video of this (the Director’s Cut) where she’s battered and bruised just before the end, and streams of swirling black cloud come out of her mouth instead of the searing bright light in this version-a stunning and frightening cryptic imagery!
She’ll give this number a spectacular aerial choreography and interpretation during a video interlude in DWT to introduce the Geisha segment of that tour. I am mesmerized by your deep insight into this video.❤😊
