One great thing about Madonna, she loves playing with sounds and is very open and daring with them. Sometimes they don't work and many times you end up with gems like this song. Like you, many people don't think of Madonna releasing something like this but she does, especially after Ray of Light. It's obvious she's less worried about radio play and more focused on releasing sounds that are not commonly released, which I appreciate tremendously.

Like “Messiah” or “Joan of Arc” from Rebel Heart album, “Isaac” from the Confessions album, “Til death do us part” from the Like a Prayer album, “Inside of me”, “Live tried to welcome me” or “Survival” from Bedtime Stories, “Waiting”, “Words” or “Secret Garden” from Erotica, “Easy Ride” from American Life, “I’m Addicted” from MDNA…

Excellent reaction! The vocoder, probably most famously associated with Bowie and Eno is a staple of Mirwais's production. Used predominantly on her Music album, he was the main producer and again on the American Life album and resurfaced in 2020 when he produced her Madame X album. Most complained that album overused autotune, but it actually was vocoder - and i do agree that it was over used at times on that album but again, Marwais always incorporates it in his production. The sweeping in orchestral instruments had to be Madonna's contribution to the production - not sure if that is a fact but that is not an element of Marwais's typical production. Madonna is known for having a heavy hand in production and the sweeping orchestra had been an added element in most of her previous albums after Like A Prayer. Marwais is French and not sure if that's the reason French lyrics are included but whatever reason, it was a perfect addition. I agree, a reaction to a song has more merit when listened to without visuals but I encourage you to watch the video, done exclusively for the Drown World tour. It adds an intriguing narrative to the song and then watch the postlude concert video of Mer Girl for closure of the Paradise video. Btw - Mer Girl Is my request for a deep dive. 2 other requests - Arioso and You'll Stay

So glad to hear this reaction - and, the song! Please keep up the deep dive reactions, there’s some really great non-singles. Please circle back and sprinkle in some of my suggestions from the swim reaction😉
I’ve been following Madonna since first hearing (and seeing) Borderline. She’s probably the musician I’ve been aligned with the longest.
While she should be credited for all of the ways she’s empowered women in music, as well as their artistic autonomy, I think she may get overlooked a bit for the risks that she takes with her music, as well as the influence it has played on the generation of musicians after her.
I still believe people think of her as the material girl, instead of the highly talented and successful artist that she matured into.
Thanks again, for your reactions, they’re a welcome part of my daily wind down - I’m always genuinely excited to see them pop up on my RUclips homepage!

That's great to hear and I really appreciate it. Wow, Borderline - what a great one. I spent my teenage years mainly listening to guitar music and avoiding pop music, but even so I still loved some Madonna singles. Now, I'm enjoying going deeper and hearing her when she's not trying to make a pop single. I will check out one of your suggestions next!

Wow! what a flashback - in college, my roommate and I were leaving our dorm room, as we were turning off MTV (which replaced radio) Borderline came on - we stopped and watched from start to end standing in front of the tv. And afterwards - 'who is that girl?' I think when she spray painted the car was the hook as a specific thing in the video but in general, it was her - the fashion, the bratty behavior, the hair and the sex appeal that oozed out of our 19 year old's tv screen. Later when we returned, MTV was instantly, as always back then, turned on and we needed to see that video again.

Everybody reacts to songs such as material girl, Vogue, ray of light, papa don't preach and many other famous songs pretending they're listening for the first time. Quite intelligent of you to take a song which isn't as known as the others.
I guess it would be great that you could react to "to have and not to hold" which is a masterpiece full of different influences including latin/brazilian music.

Thanks for your reaction. The production on this track, Paradise Not for Me is absolutely phenomenal. If memory serves me correctly, Mirwas originally wrote this song and Madonna asked to cover it and he agreed. This is one of my favorite tracks off her Music album and I've always found this song to have a haunting feeling. I remembered Madonna herself had explained in an interview that this track is about suicide 😲! I would suggest doing another video reaction to this same song, but search for DWT Paradise Not For Me live version (specifically if you land on a fan's video from the audience) now that performance is pure artistic explosion!

Mirwais wrote the instrumental and asked Madonna to write lyrics for it, for inclusion on his own album ("Production"). They shared a 60/40 publishing split for this particular track (as opposed to their usual 50/50 split), as the melody of the small sections that were sung basically mirrored the instrumental (so Madonna felt that her own contribution wasn't as significant as Mirwais's). It's definitely not a cover - Madonna wouldn't have received a 40% writing credit for a cover. It's a brilliant collaboration and was a fantastic start to a creative partnership that has lasted two decades (so far).

Amazing reaction my friend!!....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because you ar going to receive an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ruclips.net/video/bDX3FhmyNac/видео.html

Reacting to the audio version of this song and its technical aspect is fine..but Madonna elevated it to a stunning artistic vision and messaging with her music video. The mv gave it a haunting, mystical visual impact beyond the audio version. In the mv she infused the song with elements of Zen Buddhism with its concept of the eternal cycle of life/death/rebirth (a common belief in Buddhism). Appreciate you covering Madonna’s artistry.

For some reason the production reminds me of early 00s Eurasian music, specifically from East and Southern Europe + West Asia. Especially the phaser vocoder vocal sound and the chill electronic triphop beats with non-classical string arrangements. Maybe because it's produced by Mirwaïs?

Very interesting question you posed. In an interview during Ray Of Light album, she stated that most people don't think that electronic music is emotional so she wanted to make it (the ROL album) intimate and emotional as it could be. You captured that sentiment with this song but added that it also has a contrasting feeling of being removed. Brilliant observation and comment. I guess it was Madonna's intention of making the song this way.
The section that sounded like Kraftwerk is the best part of the song for me.
Kraftwerk's Computer Love is the song that Coldplay sampled for their song Talk.
