  • The Protestant Reformation evokes names such as Martin Luther and John Calvin, but these men weren’t acting alone. From one of our live events, Stephen Nichols reminds us of two lesser-known figures from the sixteenth century.

There is so often a bigger picture when we tend to operate in thumbnail sketches and condensed accounts. Even Scripture when it comes to what Jesus did etc. John 21:25.

Always like to take a moment to remind my theologically trained brothers who have their house built on calvinist underpinnings, that the actual Christian Church was yet again, underground experiencing yet another Inquisition.
Martin Luther tapped his 93 page thesis on the door of a Catholic cathedral... thus affirming what was being reformed - the heresy did not lie with the oppressed, but with the oppressor.
Lutheranism is reformed Catholicism, not Christianity.
And so are all the offshoots that came out of Lutheranism... The Anglicans were there before, but the Methodists, Baptist's, Waldensians.... the unitarians etc.
Lutheranism made it safer for Christians to come out of the woodwork slowly.

I guess I'll bite. Would you say that neither Calvin nor Luther were true Christians? That's quite a presumptuous argument to make 400 years in the future. Moreover, have you read their works?
If your thesis is correct, that Lutheranism is as simple as reforming Roman Catholicism, why would you associate Calvinism with that? The two were fighting on completely different fronts and didn't completely align with each other.
Additionally, how do you deal with John Knox in Scotland? Or any other portion of the Reformation throughout Europe or the colonies?
It isn't simply The Reformation™. The all encompassing term is The Protestant Reformation. They were protesting against both the Papacy primary, as well as any other state-run church system.
This "actual Christian Church" you're referring to seems to be a strange, Marxist-inspired oppressed vs oppressor retelling of the history of the Protestant Reformation. The history is far more rich, complex, and meaningful than that.

@@mainiacmoto2564 where do you think presumption comes into this? Without Catholic heresy, there have been no Luther... Without without Martin luther, we would have not have had Calvin.
You can't include anglicanism or unitarianism, because those were offshoots that came from the House of Tudor.

I love our reformation brothers that previously gave so much for us and the lord. I look forward to meeting them in the lords house one day.
