- Walt Disney's Bambi - The Magic Behind the Masterpiece
Bambi is a 1942 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and based on the book Bambi: A Life in the Woods by Austrian author Felix Salten. The fifth film in the Disney Animated Canon , the film was released by RKO Radio Pictures on August 13, 1942, during World War II.
The main characters are Bambi (a white-tailed deer), his parents (the Great Prince of the Forest and his unnamed mother), his friends Thumper (a pink-nosed rabbit), and Flower (a skunk), his childhood friend and future mate, Faline and the villain of the story Man. The plot centers around Bambi learning to grow up in the wild after his mother is shot by Man. For the film, Disney took the liberty of changing Bambi's species into a white-tailed deer from his original species of roe deer, since roe deer do not inhabit the United States, and the white-tailed deer is more familiar to Americans. The film received three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound, Best Song for "Love Is a Song" and Original Music Score.
The film was a major catalyst in what people now see as "environmental films", as well as Walt Disney's favorite of his animated films. In June 2008, the American Film Institute presented a list of its "10 Top 10", the best ten films in each of ten "classic" American film genres. After polling over 1,500 people from the creative community, Bambi placed third in animation. A direct-to-video midquel, titled Bambi II, was released in 2006.
Hard to believe our little Bambi is 80 this year.
It’s 80 years old holy shit
I used to watch this on the VHS.
Same. I thought it was interesting to look at how the Disney staff brought the movie to life via art, stop-animation and the other old-fashioned (by today's standards) techniques.
Me too. It funny you would think I being a kid at the time wouldn’t be insterest seeing this but I was interest at seeing how they did and really went into detail making the movie by getting real live animal to study the behavior of them
Same
Bambi is still one of the most beautiful animated movies I’ve ever seen!
I feel as though pre- renaissance Disney does not get the respect they rightfully deserves. I mean yeah stuff like Bambi, Jungle Book and Cinderella don't have as hard hitting morals as Zootopia or Encanto do, but you can't deny how much hard work went into them and how much spirit the end results have.
As Disney approaches its 100th anniversary I actually feel insulted that Old classics like Bambi are brushed under the rug while they focus on promoting 90s and Pixar hits. If it wasn't for movies like Bambi and their groundbreaking innovations we wouldn't have many of the hits we know today.
Fucking, thank you
AAA NOBODY'S TALKING ABOUT THE TINKERBELL INTRO
THIS IS THE TINKERBELL INTRO I REMEMBER (tho i remember one where her wand didnt work a few times too)
The way I remember it is that tinkerbell created the arch with her fairy dust and then waves her wand to dot the I
it happened on one of the cartoons, just not every intro.

Bambi was the last full-length animated feature made by Walt Disney until Cinderella. The gap was due to the lack of film workers (who were in military service) and materials necessary to make films when WWII was going on. Donnie Dunagan kept his role of Young Bambi quiet while in the Marines, as he feared he would pick up the nickname "Bambi". He would have a remarkable career in the service, becoming the youngest drill instructor in its' history, rising to the rank of Major and serving in the Vietnam War where he would be decorated for valour and wounded three times. In December 2018, a Missourian poacher was sentenced to one year in prison for illegally killing deer for trophies. As part of his penalty, he was required to watch this movie once a month. Six-year-old Peter Behn auditioned with several other children for the voice roles of Mother Rabbit's children. When Behn said the line (in reference to Bambi), "Did the young prince fall down?", a casting director who was watching the audition in another room shouted, "Get that kid out of here! He can't act!" However, the Disney animators who heard the audition tape loved the sound of Behn's voice. Behn was called back to the studio, and the character of Thumper was created largely based on his vocal performance. The movie lost money at the box office for the first run, but began to recoup its considerable cost (over $2,000,000) during the 1947 re-release. "Bambi" premiered August 8, 1942 in London - a very daring move in the midst of war - and a few days later in New York. Despite glowing reviews, it was an initial box office disappointment. This prompted Disney to re-release Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the summer of 1944, a tactic that the studio regularly adopts now for all their animated features. There are approximately only 1,000 words of dialogue throughout the entire film then the rest is all silence. Felix Salten, the creator of Bambi, sold the film rights to the original novel for only $1,000 dollars. In the original novel, Bambi is a roe deer but these aren't native to North America so Walt Disney changed him to a mule deer. The writing was completed in July 1940, by which time the film's budget had increased to $858,000. Due to World War II, which began in Europe in 1939, Pinocchio and Fantasia failed at the box office. Facing financial difficulty, Walt Disney was forced to cut 12 minutes from the film before final animation to save production costs.
Thank you for sharing! It's such a shame they had to cut 12 minutes from this film.
The other thing is the US military hired large animation studios to produce both propaganda and training videos for the soldiers, the animators that did stay were busy taking care of these. Bambi's completion and publication was quite the lucky outcome because it required a negotiation to ensure the project still got resources, in spite of the WWII impacts. The movie had its debut in August of 1942, the USA had already entered WWII directly because of the Pearl Harbor attack by late 1941.
This brings back so many memories. I thought it was interesting to look at how the Disney staff brought the movie to life via art, stop-animation and the other old-fashioned (by today's standards) techniques.
I had this video on my Bambi DVD I used to watch when I was 7 and I am now studying animation in University, whenever I wonder what started me on that journey, I always come back to this
The voice of Walt Disney is exactly like Carl Sagan. Rest is peace both ❤️
I've been looking for this video for years. Wow. The memories.
This behind the scenes video is taken from the 1997 masterpiece collection vhs of Bambi
One of My Favorite Disney Movies of All Time and One of My Favorite Personal Disney Movies Bar None!
who else just came for tink intro
She did do it, not only on fast play because if you search up “the making of Bambi” and click on the video that is 9 years old, with a slightly distorted thumbnail, you can actually see tinker bell, it was only in some movies:edit: it’s not quite “dotting the I” but she does appear but instead she pops the Disney logo and flies off
Slow motion photography with drops of milk WOW 🥛
11:11 Bambi got spooked by the audience 😂
I’ve always loved that little scene in this video
My family has the VHS tape for this and we just watched it.
So you're telling me that this movie is now 82 years old....
At 11:55, Bambi was not an immediate triumph in its first release. It lost money at the box office.
True Cause of World War 2 At The Time and Bambi is Still a Classic Disney Movie Years Later!
Yep, true, cos it was modestly succesful.
I remember watching Bambi on VHS way back in the day but unfortunately they didn’t have the making of this version I think that this one is the 97 Bambi

thank you to Walt Disney for this epic
11:13-11:17 Bambi: *Sees audience* Huh? What? Aaaaahhhhhh! *Runs behind rock*
11:19 Bambi: *Sticks head out from behind rock and realizes it's just the audience* Oh, it's just you.
I like to think that Bambi himself could break the fourth wall, but he's just too cute-- and too shy-- to ever try to do it. So, he has the Mouse show him how.
Was that made specifically for this or was it animated during the production of the movie
@Rita and Runt I think it was made during production of the movie.
@@ritaandrunt5767 This scene, along with the paint mixing/cel painting scenes, actually is footage from the feature film _The Reluctant Dragon_ with Robert Benchley, which was a behind-the-scenes at Disney sorta thing, and came out a year prior before Bambi (so it basically was an advertisement in a way), and this scene is where Benchley found out how ink/paint was used for the cels.
11:14 LOL 😂 Bambi broke the fourth wall
Disney adapted several other Felix Salten stories, including Perri(a squirrel)which was a live nature film, and The Hound of Florence(updated into The Shaggy Dog).
The lover nature that time I respect nature very much I feel it from watching observe the habits of the creatures of nature they can learn a lot
nothing like hand drawn animation

If that logo is the one used on bambi, then yeah this is almost certainly the one I personally remember. It looks about right and I watched bambi a lot as a kid. The details are a little off from what I remember but it's close enough to call it.
update: the bambi vhs is apparently missing tinkerbell lol. so back to looking I guess...
Imagine that Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong made a soundtrack for Bambi...
It’s Only So Difference’s and Spirit Full It’s a Delightful, It Is.👍
"Walt Disney was planning Bambi in 1936, while still in production of his first full-length animated feature, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'."
I think "still in production" means that something is still being worked on. "Planning" might be the same thing, but . . . I think that Bambi's mother was the first Disney Princess.
"In Snow White, we gained more experience and the courage to take another big step. We'd make a cartoon feature starring only animals. Now, we'd long been interested in the works of Felix Salten, and one of these we felt was ideal. It was Bambi, the story of a deer. We knew that to retain the charm of these creatures, our animated drawings must fully capture the natural movements and attitudes of living animals."
And from that spawned many, many animated films.
The lover nature that time Jose carioca and panchito and I respect nature very much we feel it from watching observe the habits of the creatures of nature they can learn a lot
Jose carioca and panchito and I were All considered to be the best of the best habits and creatures with life of the forest
I thought of Katherine Heigl as my experience and even her voice before Andie in two animated movies.
No one said anything about how at the end, one of the men narrating said, “They’re not gay.” Hahaha
Haha in context he meant they are not happy in a carefree or artificial manner. He was commenting on the realism of the happiness by noting that the happiness is not forced.
14:23 Corey Burton who played Count Dooku from Star Wars The Clone Wars
at 9:35 what year was that interview with peter behin filmed
I want to animate like this but it looks to hard can I get some incerigment
Well, animation, especially of this caliber _is_ pretty hard. It wouldn't do you any good to pretend it's not. But at the same time, it was done by people who didn't even have access to the kinds of amazing resources we have today. If they could learn to do it, then I'm sure you can too!
Is this on any of the DVD releases? Its not on tje one I own which is the special edition
11:14 LOL 😂 Bambi broke the fourth wall
Made think of The Nut Job 2 End Credits.
I thought of Surly Andie and Buddy as my experience.
