bambi 2 also used the method of making the hunters sound like bambi's mom, ronno did to at the beginning just to show it of I guess,so bambi 2 also references a few things from the book that you spoke of
I'd say Bambi 2 is definitely one of the better direct-to-video Disney movies. In fact, DisneyToon was so proud of it themselves, that it was released to theaters in several countries.
Bambi 2 is called a midquel, because it takes place after Bambi's mother's death and before he reaches adulthood! As for Ronno, he's a bully deer, and we learned how he changed from a childhood bully into "a dark monster" in the first film!
You should read the books. Makes you feel kinda nostalgic seeing the difference in how thing you viewed as a child are now more like real life. Teaches you a lot.
I would like to point out that The Emphasis On Bambi’s relationship with his Father was more present during the second Film, where not only did It help Bambi Get over his Fear of the hunters but also confirmed the Rival Buck he fought in the first Film was actually Ronno. The second film, despite being a VHS Film, certainly had a lot of thought put into it.
In the films we have to worry about Bambi being a ‘memetic loser’ to standard public with him being cutesy ‘BIRD!’ and ice skating as a fawn. To top it off, Disney just uses fawn Bambi.
Honestly this book sounds like a great story to read! It's something I would expect from a story about nature and animals while having no personable human characters.
I read the book last year. Almost every time an animal dies in the book, the moments before death are described in detail (e.g. a squirrel is talking nonsense in some kind of delirium). Also, we see the "humane" side of the hunters, caring about Gobo but shooting him in the end. Considering the time when this was written, I think it is actually a book about the war. There are more details that can be linked to the war, like the hunters burning down the territory, children without parents, starving in winter...
I didn't find the book that depressing, I loved it, and it made a conscious effort to make us learn and it also has interesting facts about the beautiful animal life. This should be mentioned and I recommend this book to anybody that cares about nature and needs a little story
Totally agree with you. Books like that are not only good and entertaining, but educational as well. And the idea of the animals seeing human hunters as gods is really interesting, as you can look at OUR gods the same way, all powerful monsters who take life at a whim. But Bambi's father showing him the dead hunter gives the lie to that, and shows we are all creatures living in the same world.
There’s a second book, Bambi’s Children. Where Bambi does show up for his kids at certain times. A film version was considered early in but was cancelled after the first film bombed back then due to World War 2. 64 years later however they made a midquel probably because barely anyone remembers the characters as adults. I mean how much Disney merchandise do you see of adult Bambi? Bambi was not originally sold to Disney it was sold to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and they were gonna intend a more ‘philosophical approach’. And I’ve seen the films first.
The author of Bambi didn’t do so well soon after the movie where he was in exile due to Nazis being in his home and was desperate need of money and ended up reluctantly selling the rights to the character’s name and part of the agreement would that he would never again be allowed to write anything about Bambi only to regret. So yeah guy who made Bambi looses his own creation.
Exactly my thoughts. I read this book when I was eight, and while it was sad I wasn't traumatised. It has a lot of valuable lessons and has always been one of my favourite books.
I agree 100%. I grew up watching the movie but the moment I laid my eyes on the book I fell in love with it. Like it said in the introduction of the book, Felix Salten was “a poet” and he described the world Bambi so colorfully. I’m personally aggravated with the fact that Disney just made Bambi another love story, where in the book it was about life, and Bambi learning just how the world works. Also the book, like stated in this clip, was much more grounded and reality based. In real life, the dad has barely any association with his offspring, and after awhile the mother will prepare her fawns for the real life by pushing them away. As a Christian and someone who also has a passion for reading the Bible, I can’t help but wonder if Felix Salten dropped certain hints. For example, Marena being so positive that there would be a time when man will live in peace with animals, reminds me of Isiah chapter 11. And the ending part where Bambi’s Father tells him about “Another One who is above man” I can’t help but think there’s a much deeper meaning. Those are my options anyway. A great book worth it’s weight in gold, I wish more people would read it
If they were shooting birds while deer hunting that would mean they have shot guns to shoot deer. They also had a fire go out of control. They most likely have never hunted before
they might have been using a particular shotgun shell called a deer-slug. I think it's just a solid lump of lead in a shell casing. Also don't forget about BUCK-shot? :)
It's pretty heavily implied that they were poachers, killing multiple animals indiscriminately, and shooting Bambi's mom in early spring, which is illegal.
The book is set in Germany, and Bambi is explicitly stated to be a roe buck. Traditional central European hunts are centered around a drive. Some hunters with dogs push the brush to other hunters standing off the drive. These drives are usually mixed bag, and start with a meeting to discuss which species are allowed to be taken during that drive. Many hunters in central Europe carry combination rifles/shotguns with multiple barrels specifically for this reason (dreilings, vierlings, etc). Imagine a double barreled shotgun with a rifle barrel centered below them. Shooting pheasant on such a hunt completely plausable to be legal in the book's depiction. Disney clearly depicted Bambi as a white-tailed deer, somewhere in North America, but didn't update anything else. As for shooting deer with shotguns, this is completely legal in the US, and often required by regulations in areas. All this being said, starting a forest fire while hunting is definitely illegal and highly frowned upon.
Bambi 2 used the plot point from the book (albeit while Bambi was still a fawn) about the hunter imitating the call of Faline (in the movie Bambi thinks it's his mother).
Whether the Great Prince is Bambi's father depends on what translation you get a hold of. In the version I read, the Great Prince is merely the oldest deer in the forest, and the term Prince is simply used in reference to male fallow deer while the term King goes to male elk. I think this was partially retconned (or maybe corrected as a translation error) in later translations after the sequel Bambi's Children, since Bambi takes a semi-active parental role in this book, and there's added emphasis on the importance of his and Faline's children over Gobo's and Marena's children.
I just discovered your videos yesterday and binge watched them all. As a book nerd, this gives me lots of book recommendations for the future. Thanks for the great content!!
The book Bambi was actually originally written in German. The author, Felix Salten, was German Jew, and fled to Switzerland to escape persecution from the Nazis. He was a wonderful author, and all his books are worth reading. By the way, I've read that first print editions of Bambi in the original German language are extremely rare and valuable, since most copies were burned by the Nazis.
@@calistafalcontail Glad you brought this up, you're absolutely correct. Bambi is not an anti-hunting book. In fact, Salten got his inspiration for Bambi from the feelings he felt and experiences while hunting. If he wasn't a hunter, there'd be no Bambi. By the way, Bambi has entered the public domain. There are now new English translations that are an improvement on the first 1920's English translation.
I have this weird memory of watching Bambi as a very young child (4-6 y/o) at my next-door neighbor's house, and I spontaneously started laughing when Bambi's mother was shot. It was sort of a reaction formation because I didn't want to cry in front of her, but she just got pissed at me for being so inconsiderate or whatever. So much for machismo, huh?
Sometimes, you can accidently laugh when tragedy happens. I think the brain is trying to not freak out or something. It was long ago it happened to me, but it does happen. But you only laughed because you didn't want to cry...? Or did the laugh come automatically?
The Deer Call happened in the sequel movie too. In the book, it was Faline saying 'come' and she and Bambi were young adults. In Bambi II, it was Bambi's mother saying 'I'm here' and Bambi was a child.
The hunters aren't evil, they're just another force of nature. Predators, like wolves, but stronger. Bambi did more than just go on until the end of the book. He also showed up in "Fifteen Rabbits" and had a sequel with "Bambi's Children". Much of the books were commentaries on human foibles and political conditions of the day and got his work banned in Germany in 1936.
Its an unfair fight hunters are bunch of cowerds that are sooo insecure of their power that they need to kill for no reason to feel good about thierself
@@onekros9261 First, human meat is fatty and full of preservatives. I don't recommend eating it. Second, those who lose sight of the difference between humans and other animals risk disconnecting with nature. Don't be the sort of idealistic nature lover who hugs lions. It annoys the lions and does you no good at all. If you must, hug a porcupine. It doesn't hurt the porky and the results can be undone with a good sturdy pair of pliers. Predation is an important part of nature, and people are part of nature.
Ok. Here's an angle i haven't seen in the 'Comments' column, but I think is essential in understanding Felix Salten's, 'Bambi, a Life in the Woods' . Felix Salten was Jewish. The book was published in the interwar years of WWI & WWII. The book was burnt by Hilter/The Nazis; it was considered a Jewish sympathetic allegory. The 'Jewish' reading is far from obvious for a non-German reader, but when I read it, there one passage that stands out as an description of an air/bombing raid. The key word that changes the reading from a 'storm' to an air-raid, is '"shelter" (I can find my copy of the book at the moment, so I can give a page reference). The Stormtroopers of the Nazis were originally called the Sturmabteilung. Why it works as a Jewish sympathetic story? Hunter vs hunted. The hunted hide in the thickets of the forest, and are in danger when they come into the open plains (= open sights). Anti-Semitism didn't' start with Hilter: it was rife during the rise of his political writing and activity. This is why I love the Bambi story. The Jewish sympathetic 'reading' is far from obvious to people not of that period of German history; but (perhaps) not so covert to those in the midst of it! Thus, it illustrates the kind of leap of imagination needed to get a perspective of any type, regarding the levels saturation of propaganda, both social and political, that the Nazis inflicted upon Germany; and the complexity of situation faced by all the people so dramatically affected.
I lost a few friends when I laughed at his Mum's death. I know it was messed up, but you know when you don't know how to react to something so you awkwardly laugh?
I loved this book, but the part with the hound killing the fox really messed me up for a while. I didint like hunting before but thats when i really started hating hunting except for food. At first i wasint a fan of the "man is evil" trope but it was handled ok enough but the twist at the end where one was shot was a welcome turn to show that is only some that are problems and are delt with. Its been a while but during my read, it came off that it was only one or two men that were being reckless in the forest and the rest of the hunting community had enough of there antics and took out the one we read about. I came across another really good book that i have yet to see adapted to film which fits with this kind of book called The Running foxes by Joyce Stranger. Really good read. if you like foxes, the books Bambi, Watership down, The Pleauge dogs, im sure you will like it.
I love both of those stories. The book is realistic and something I would read myself, like maybe I'll bring it to school to read. (if it has the weird old English or whatever, that wouldn't be an issue, I'm reading the old Sherlock stories, and trust me...The English is *weird* .) while the movie is more light-hearted and fun to watch. It's also my childhood though, so I'm pretty biased to it. (The only movie in my childhood that wasn't Disney was a Carebear Movie.)
I learned this from my dad after watching Bambi as a kid that it's actually illegal to shoot a doe with a fawn. My dad likes hunting too so he knows all the rules. Also, you're limited (depending on the state I think) to how many stags you can take down too. I could be wrong with that one. Of course you can only hunt during a certain season.
Just discovered your channel a few days ago, and it’s pretty much been playing on my tv nonstop. I scrolled through, and I can’t believe you’ve been putting out content for 8 years! Good for you!
Bambi is my favorite Disney movie, hands down. I grew up around deer, and I have always been in awe and appreciated the hard work that went into the undoubtedly beautiful film when they didn’t have all the technology we have today. I read the book by Felix, and I was AMAZED by how incredible it was. It’s definitely one of my favorite books. I, however, was shocked about how dark the book was compared to the movie. I recommend the book to someone who hasn’t read it. It’s definitely an experience.
Fun fact: the ‘hunter’ in Bambi is a poacher. The white tailed deer being a favorite of hunters is actually what brought them back into the large populations they have now. They used to get over populated, eat all their resources and die off from starvation. Hunters curbing the population (during times of year where they do not have fawns) is actually good for them as a whole. My dad is a hunter and loves his family of deer in the neighborhood and will feed them now and again. Be careful of feeding deer, in some states it is illegal for very good reasons. Just not in GA
I absolutely love this video! I've been a fan of Bambi all my life and the original novel is one of my favorite books of all time. It's such an interesting story with a lot of good insights into the lives of animals. It's a rough ride, but a masterpiece in my opinion.
Actually, Bambi was one of the few books I got a hold of and read so I already knew about most of this. It really is fascinating how similar it was to the movie.
In the second movie, Bambi's father says he met his mother around the same young age that Bambi was. So that means Bambi's mother was the same age that his father was. So why isn't she as greatly respected as he was? They don't call her the great princess.
She IS greatly respected, since ALL the forest animals visited her to congratulate her after Bambi was born! His father was standing on top of a hill watching the celebration of his son's birth, so he KNEW he became a father!
the movie has a sequel from 2006. i think the scene where the great prince scolding Bambi after the voice in the meadow incident was from the book. the difference is that in the movie, the great prince tells Bambi that the voice is "one of Man's tricks" E.I a deer whistle. another difference is that in the book Bambi thought it was Faline while in the movie, he thought it was his mother. also, the sequel is set while Bambi is still a fawn, so this movie is set in the time of the first movie and is a side story. Bambi also fights Ronno here but he's just a bully full of hot air.
I'm so happy to see you cover this. Bambi, the book, was my favorite in elementary school. I was teased for reading it so often. I think I warmed up to it because I was a loner and a child other children disliked. I had to learn to enjoy my own company and hide from the tormentors. I also understood the book was about ecology. Bambi's Children was about humans who were better to wildlife and cared for the forest. The original Bambi just suited my lonely heart.
This was always one of my favorites, I've had the book for decades, carried it around from home to home and never read it. I think it's time I did. Thanks, really interesting.

bambi 2 also used the method of making the hunters sound like bambi's mom, ronno did to at the beginning just to show it of I guess,so bambi 2 also references a few things from the book that you spoke of
I'd say Bambi 2 is definitely one of the better direct-to-video Disney movies.
I love how you ruined my childhood
Meh...talk about a ruined childhood
I watched Bambi when I was 4
/: he made my childhood even better and more interesting.
You should read the books. Makes you feel kinda nostalgic seeing the difference in how thing you viewed as a child are now more like real life. Teaches you a lot.
LordCthulhu same
Oscar aka Ruby I will do that thanks!

Gabriel, jackass
In the films we have to worry about Bambi being a ‘memetic loser’ to standard public with him being cutesy ‘BIRD!’ and ice skating as a fawn. To top it off, Disney just uses fawn Bambi.
Gabriel Surilla, Also, being original in German. It was the English translators trying to throw shit for fun.
Your hair looks stupid.
That bird is a soccer mom
Honestly this book sounds like a great story to read! It's something I would expect from a story about nature and animals while having no personable human characters.
I read the book last year. Almost every time an animal dies in the book, the moments before death are described in detail (e.g. a squirrel is talking nonsense in some kind of delirium). Also, we see the "humane" side of the hunters, caring about Gobo but shooting him in the end. Considering the time when this was written, I think it is actually a book about the war. There are more details that can be linked to the war, like the hunters burning down the territory, children without parents, starving in winter...
"No stags were their booty call" I'm weak😂😂😂
They most likely have never hunted before
Diglett Master people use shotguns to hunt deer
they might have been using a particular shotgun shell called a deer-slug. I think it's just a solid lump of lead in a shell casing. Also don't forget about BUCK-shot? :)
It's pretty heavily implied that they were poachers, killing multiple animals indiscriminately, and shooting Bambi's mom in early spring, which is illegal.
It's actually illegal to hunt deer with actual hunting rifles in some areas. You literally have to use shotguns or pistol ammo.
Yayy another story to tell my little cousins the next time they break my stuff
Whether the Great Prince is Bambi's father depends on what translation you get a hold of. In the version I read, the Great Prince is merely the oldest deer in the forest, and the term Prince is simply used in reference to male fallow deer while the term King goes to male elk. I think this was partially retconned (or maybe corrected as a translation error) in later translations after the sequel Bambi's Children, since Bambi takes a semi-active parental role in this book, and there's added emphasis on the importance of his and Faline's children over Gobo's and Marena's children.
I guess Bambi's father loved him deerly
Hhhhhhhh-
Absolutely! He ALWAYS loved his son!
He was also a hunter himself btw.
Anders Engman Oh, you said "spontan"-however you spell it. So, I guess you knew that already.
You may just be slightly amused by loud noises.
+SnowfoxIceDragon
Well, I'm actually slightly amused by noises too, but mainly when I'm the cause of them.
Anders Engman
Hehe. Me too.
I miss those days too Jon mate thats just made my day depressing, THANK YOU 😂😂
Duuuude thats so awesome !!!!!
Did someone delete their comment(s)?
A hippie deer😂
The Deer Call happened in the sequel movie too. In the book, it was Faline saying 'come' and she and Bambi were young adults. In Bambi II, it was Bambi's mother saying 'I'm here' and Bambi was a child.
The hunters aren't evil, they're just another force of nature. Predators, like wolves, but stronger.
Bambi did more than just go on until the end of the book. He also showed up in "Fifteen Rabbits" and had a sequel with "Bambi's Children". Much of the books were commentaries on human foibles and political conditions of the day and got his work banned in Germany in 1936.
not natural weapons
Its an unfair fight hunters are bunch of cowerds that are sooo insecure of their power that they need to kill for no reason to feel good about thierself
@@onekros9261
And because deer taste good. High quality meat; lean and low in cholesterol.
@@JustClaude13 so does human meat all the canibals love killing babys and cooking them but they get judged for it
@@onekros9261
First, human meat is fatty and full of preservatives.
The hunters were hunting out of season
You also got to think this was another time where the laws were different
Then they are not hunters they are poachers. There is a difference hunters obey the law and poachers have a disregard for the law
Around 1923s
This movie is why I’m on the career track for game warden 🤣 almost done with bachelors
Idk why but i LOVE your intro❤❤oml I'm dying right THE JON SOLO LIKED MY COMMENT!!!!

the art dragon yes it was based on a lesser known picture book that Walt Disney found in a book store

I lost a few friends when I laughed at his Mum's death.
I know it was messed up, but you know when you don't know how to react to something so you awkwardly laugh?
MANY people laugh at funerals for the same reason!
Huh, they actually went back to the origional source material for parts of the sequel. Well what do you know?
Father dears tells his son he 'loves him DEARly' 😂😂😂😂😂
(if it has the weird old English or whatever, that wouldn't be an issue, I'm reading the old Sherlock stories, and trust me...The English is *weird* .)
while the movie is more light-hearted and fun to watch. It's also my childhood though, so I'm pretty biased to it. (The only movie in my childhood that wasn't Disney was a Carebear Movie.)
My friends hated Bambi. They found it annoying with the cutesy child Bambi parts. Also, you don’t even see that much adult Bambi merchandise do you?
I learned this from my dad after watching Bambi as a kid that it's actually illegal to shoot a doe with a fawn. My dad likes hunting too so he knows all the rules. Also, you're limited (depending on the state I think) to how many stags you can take down too. I could be wrong with that one. Of course you can only hunt during a certain season.
Omg the hair cut reference. 😂😂. I love your origins videos.
always early cuz i love this series 😂😂
Just discovered your channel a few days ago, and it’s pretty much been playing on my tv nonstop. I scrolled through, and I can’t believe you’ve been putting out content for 8 years! Good for you!
I would want to see this version.
“Tells his son he loves him deerly”
I love puns
Fun fact: the ‘hunter’ in Bambi is a poacher. The white tailed deer being a favorite of hunters is actually what brought them back into the large populations they have now.
They used to get over populated, eat all their resources and die off from starvation.
Hunters curbing the population (during times of year where they do not have fawns) is actually good for them as a whole.
My dad is a hunter and loves his family of deer in the neighborhood and will feed them now and again.
Be careful of feeding deer, in some states it is illegal for very good reasons. Just not in GA
11:25 you missed the no-pun-intended joke
The intro always gives me an old Disney vibe as well as history and I love it 🥰
I feel like out of all the messed up origins, this one isn't that bad. And is closer to the movie.
Bambi is a rare example of my liking an original novel just as well as the Disney movie.
I absolutely love this video! I've been a fan of Bambi all my life and the original novel is one of my favorite books of all time. It's such an interesting story with a lot of good insights into the lives of animals. It's a rough ride, but a masterpiece in my opinion.
The jewish german author was a hunter himself.
"He calls Bambi his son for the first time"

Actually, Bambi was one of the few books I got a hold of and read so I already knew about most of this. It really is fascinating how similar it was to the movie.
The movie is better, because it's family-friendly and more realistic!

I didn't know Bambi was an old tale. This is the 5th-6th video I've liked from you, you definitely deserve the sub. Keep it up 👍
The book is from 1923!
i knew it was bambi but that was so sad i cant believe h3 yelled at his babies then left them.
If Disney is going to make a live action "re-make" of Bambi, I want it the messed up way. Show kids how real it is in these streets! 🤣
I read something about that, but I don't know if that happened!
the movie has a sequel from 2006. i think the scene where the great prince scolding Bambi after the voice in the meadow incident was from the book. the difference is that in the movie, the great prince tells Bambi that the voice is "one of Man's tricks" E.I a deer whistle. another difference is that in the book Bambi thought it was Faline while in the movie, he thought it was his mother. also, the sequel is set while Bambi is still a fawn, so this movie is set in the time of the first movie and is a side story. Bambi also fights Ronno here but he's just a bully full of hot air.
"Calls his son "Bambi" For the first time, tells him he loves him DEARLY-"
Me: HA!!!
He's Bambi's biological father, and ALWAYS loved his son more than anything else!
"Loves him dearly"
Me: "Heh deer"
Every time I hear the opening I get so pumped up for the video - so uplifting
I love you....

I ant stop sleeping!your story’s are so good that it’s really hard to not sleep it’s like a song it’s beautiful but it’s very detailed
Friend hare's wife's death is so much more traumatizing when you actually read it.
I played Friend Hare in a high school version of Bambi
This was always one of my favorites, I've had the book for decades, carried it around from home to home and never read it. I think it's time I did. Thanks, really interesting.

I'm looking into it 👀

If the book said that bambi was introduced to his aunt and her fawns, does that mean that faline and bambi are cousins?
Doesn't the same thing happen in the lion king
I love Felix Salten's Bambi! I was 8 when I read it the first time. I loved it so much I pretty much started reading it again when I finished it... I remember being so proud when I read the whole book in a single day one time. Now I wanna read it, it's been too long.. Too bad it's at my parent's place.
I love how he hesitated before saying ,"booty call."
Lol I love this channel so much
This explanation much more than the original
I like gore
I love this series. Dont stopp bro its really addicting, please do the ice queen next or somn like that.
Jon Solo the childhood destroyer
My childhood already ruined itself before knowing the book.Disney just keeps using just fawn Bambi. It’s probably the reason the made Bambi 2 a midquel being that the book actually had a sequel with his children.
Ok, I just recently found your channel, began binge watching, and noticed with this video, how different you look from the one in January of this year. With that written, I really like your reader's digest version of all of these twisted tales. Do one on the Pied Piper.
