6 years (**correction,5 years) is required to apply for citizenship the normal way. I have passed 6 years here in Portugal, and waiting to do the CAPLE exam (80 euros), unfortunately i have to wait until july or november as there's very limited spots available for the exam, and not many locations where you can do it. After that, I would expected around 2 years or more waiting time until the process is complete to become a citizen. *Update - 5 years, not 6*

Nice one, guys¹ A new law in PT allows you to count he time you spent waiting for residency towards your citizenship,, so we are close to 3 years in. You have cone a long way...I remember the videos with that old steel door.
Hey Geoffrey, we (like Gina and Ken and you) have also been here close to five years but had to wait three years for the residency card. I’m thrilled to hear that the government is going to backdate to the arrival date, because SEF were adamant (when we picked up our cards last year) that the clock actually started at that point. Are you able to give us any more details about the law change (to put our minds at rest AND to show the people at AIMA who may not be aware of this themselves)?
We had papers from when we first applied for residency back in 2019 so we were just going to apply using those dates. I diddnt think that they would only start the clock from when they sent the card. Hopefully that wont be a problem! I am sure itll be fine though. Good luck with your application :)
That was like a 100 year storm. I was watching all of Europe from the USA. It was like one of our worst Hurricanes! Just unfortunate that you moved in that week!
Congrats to 5 years guys . A few questions to ask. Any regrets ? Would you do anything differently ? And where do you see yourselves 5 years from now ? All the best Ken , Gina and the pups and cats. Happy Birthday Gina!🎂🎂 P.S. We started learning portuguese 5 years ago. Made a lot of progress. It's those darn verbs present and past tense.
Thanks! I think we would have bought a 4x4 in the UK 6 months before travelling here so that we could have imported it free of change instead of our VW golf. You can get 4x4 vehicles really cheaply in the UK but they cost around 5x more in Portugal! I cant think of any regrets... maybe id like to have planted some more trees 5 years ago to give a bit more shade in our garden for the summer. Main reason we diddnt do it is irrigation but I intend to set that up this spring for the summer cseason. Hope you are all keeping well (and warm) over there :)
I am Portuguese and I agree that the Portuguese language is difficult. I find myself checking the conjugation of some verbs and revisiting the grammar several or many times throughout the year and even more so now with Brazilian friends here in Portuga😊
Its very confusing for me. I think perhaps when my brain was a bit younger and more elastic it would have been easier to wrap my head around it all. The other day I learned that the word for a woman's dress is masculine... I mean wtf!? 😂 Makes no sense to me 😆
I have been watching your channel for past 2 years now, really enjoy the video you put out here. Good luck with your Aula de idioma. FYI there are online private Zoom classes (A1+A2) but through private instructor and it only takes 2months and cost around 350-400 euros. If you are interested you can reply in comments and i can provide their lisbon contact details. Keep posting the video and all the best.
I'm just about to start my 6 year adventure to PT & EU citizenship! I think the hardest part is passing the A2 language course so their gov scheme is well worth doing. Your application should be straight forward now.
Hi john, good luck for your adventure! According to google its not longer 6 years, back in 2018 they changed it so that you can apply for citizenship after 5 years. I think after applying they can take around 1-2 years to process the citizenship though.
That storm reminds us of our first here in Spain. Easter 2019 and the caves had around 1cm of water all over, it was a bit of a shock getting out of bed. We spent the whole weekend bailing out, thought the same as you... have we made a big mistake.
@@OKportugal It was interesting to say the least, combination of a squeegee and mops. Thankfully it hasn't happened since in the caves, just a bit comes in down a chimney when the wind blows in a certain direction. We are not allowed to change the top of it visually as it is typical for our area.
Congrats guys on making such a success of your move to Portugal. Q my partner and i are also thinking of moving from South Africa, if she has a Portuguese passport / citizenship through her father is it easier for myself to obtain same, and is the language test as you mention then still a requirement, also maybe the 5 yrs before applying doesn’t apply… to us provided we are married first?
Hi congrats on 5 years so jealous . Was looking 4ward to a move from uk but got married and had little boy so we went to Canada. But will be over in the next few years long winters here . @OKportugal our homes all have central heating. They are not necessarily built better. I think the homes in Portugal are built better. They unfortunately don't have the installation and central heating like we have here. I enjoy your videos. Cheers and take care
Howzit Ken & Gina. Will soon be starting our Portuguese adventure, probably with the D2 Visa. Which Visa did you get? Looking forward to watching you navigate the process. Thanks so much for sharing 😀
We left the UK before brexit while our British passports were still part of the EU. This meant that we could get 5 year residency in Portugal without a visa. Good luck for your move :)
Im over my Strep Throat, so you actually had me LOL, LMAO!! Your such a chicken over a Spider! And the way you described the metal door, "LOOK AT THIS DAMN THING!!" I'm crying!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Y'all's Mental Wellbeing sounds like mine! Gina, i hit a "0" number this year too! But, it's a plus 10! I really enjoyed the history of your journey. Y'all are living part of my dream. I would love to be on Terceira right now. Visiting is fine bc i still have my Mom and she had a small Heart attack in Late October. So for now, its small trips for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying this time with her! She has some mobility issues, but still able to walk. You have to make her stop and listen so your not repeating 3 times. But she is funnier! What comes up comes out! Even in public! She will embarrass you instead of me talking loud and embarrassing her!😂😂😂😂😂 i'll stop now, just a little ketchup, haha on this end too! This year is starting out weird! ✝️🙏❤🇺🇸🇵🇹⛵👣🍍🤗
The only difference between permanent residency and citizenship is you can vote you can still travel and work even just with the temporary resident card if you registered before brexit it's the same as it was before brexit
Hey guys, I hope yopu dont mind me asking a quick question. If we buy a property and have no debt. What would you say is a comfortable monthly retirement amount required to live in central Portugal. We are looking to retire in five years and reno a Rancher/Bungalow 1 acre thereabouts, average couple nothing crazy internet Tv and usual bills to pay
Hi Roy, not really, our house is so basic with tijolo brick walls and no insulation so we get it really bad. I have found that keeping the house warm with fires or the aircon constantly stops most of it but does use a lot of energy! I think a better insulated house with airconditioning for heating would deal with it much better.

I honestly thought Brexit would be cancelled… then covid lockdowns trapped me during the last days of being able to move back to Portugal. Now I’m stacking bitcoins… one day I’ll move back.
May I ask please, with respect, if you get a referral fee for those properties (OK Portugal) you have filmed . I understand it is your business - excellent videos-work. Only asking so for those of buyers can have a bit of leverage with the agencies -owners. Thank you much !
@@OKportugal It seems this CL agency is a bit shady . No website , did not send property documents per request but sent your tube video instead - questionable and suspicious. The Portuguese language test is just BS , I'm Portuguese and in the UK I've worked with Portuguese passport holders that couldn't say a word in Portuguese. When the UK left the E.U in the Portuguese Embassy and Consulates they had the information about the necessary documents in Portuguese and in another 28 languages for the Portuguese citizens that couldn't speak Portuguese. When working for an agency I was sent to Littlehampton books , some worker from some other agency was having some problems and the supervisor asked me to help him as like me he was Portuguese but when I introduced myself in Portuguese he told me : " Sorry , not speak Poland , Poland people very nice " He had a Portuguese passport and told me that he worked in Coimbra but I could see that he never put his feet in Portugal and didn't know anything about Portugal , when I told the supervisor they checked his passport and it was genuine. I met hundreds like him , when I joined the agency when entering the van for the first time to be taken to a garden centre the driver told me to be careful with my belongings because there was a lot of Portuguese working there. Go to London's Lambeth Borough and tell me what is the percentage of the Portuguese passport holders that live there that can speak Portuguese.
Sometimes I don't think you get enough credit for documenting that whole trip from UK to Portugal - it was epic.
It was an exciting trip for sure. I tried to document it on my phone so my family could keep up to date with that we were doing. I thought I would film my mid life crisis so I could see where it all went wrong - if it didn't work out :)

The language will be great for us to follow. Good luck.
Bravo
Excelente trabalho 👏👏👏
Boa imagem apesar das galinhas a passar em frente ao palco.😅
Há 40 saí da minha aldeia, Beijós, porque não se passava lá nada, agora só quero voltar para lá porque não se passa lá nada 😁🌞
That was like a 100 year storm. I was watching all of Europe from the USA. It was like one of our worst Hurricanes! Just unfortunate that you moved in that week!
5 years, time goes fast, crazy, try to enjoy all the moments
DogDog💔..beautiful, majestic Massak💙
You deserve it, baie bly. Enjoy .
😂 Makes no sense to me 😆
@@OKportugal😮😮😮
I have been watching your channel for past 2 years now, really enjoy the video you put out here. Good luck with your Aula de idioma. FYI there are online private Zoom classes (A1+A2) but through private instructor and it only takes 2months and cost around 350-400 euros. If you are interested you can reply in comments and i can provide their lisbon contact details. Keep posting the video and all the best.
Thanks for watching ... we are currently going to a local school where the government offer the A1 & A2 lessons for free 😊
@@OKportugal Yes, I meant approx 6 years to get a passport, so you should have yours by 6 years.
The olive trees are looking great,GJ.
Yes thankfully we found some skilled guys to prune then for us properly and its wasnt as expensive as I thought it would be either!
That storm reminds us of our first here in Spain. Easter 2019 and the caves had around 1cm of water all over, it was a bit of a shock getting out of bed. We spent the whole weekend bailing out, thought the same as you... have we made a big mistake.
Oh wow, getting water out of a cave house, thats a whole new level! :)
@@OKportugal It was interesting to say the least, combination of a squeegee and mops. Thankfully it hasn't happened since in the caves, just a bit comes in down a chimney when the wind blows in a certain direction. We are not allowed to change the top of it visually as it is typical for our area.
It goes then B1,B2( intermediate) and then C1 ( advanced) and C2 ( proficiency) level.
We can start the passport process in October 2025... I 100% agree with chasing the sun. I love Portugal, but I don't want to be here in winter.
Thanks :) I am really not sure, I have only researched the citizenship requirements for our particular situation.
Hi congrats on 5 years so jealous . Was looking 4ward to a move from uk but got married and had little boy so we went to Canada. But will be over in the next few years long winters here . I also did love the pond in the back would be a nice project.
Sorry this might be personal but trying to work out things myself but how do you survive. Do u work online because money must be tough . Sorry i dont mean to pry u guys are grest to watch so down to esrth just need some tips myself .
Thanks
26° C in Victoria Australia. Cold for this time of year. Normally in the high 30's, low 40's.
I remember reading somewhere that the El Niño climate patterns are going to mess with the weather a lot this year. They are expecting a very hot summer here, perhaps its the opposite over that side?
@@OKportugal the weather patterns are all over the place. Increasing high flood levels, increased severity of bush fires, increasing drought. We have it all
Hello Deborah, how are you doing today
26ºC in the Algarve (south of Portugal) last thursday, but it's not a record temperature in the winter here. I remember 30ºC in February about 30 years ago.
A0, A1,etc aren't modules but CEFR language levels.
Gina AGE is just a number ❤❤❤ 🎉🎉🎉
So glad I've just found your channel. Just subscribed. I'm a lover of God too so more than happy to listen to your podcast and watch your videos 🙏
@RupertsPortugal awww thank you for kind words 🙏 welcome
It's been as low as -21° here in the last few days and no sun.
Oh wow, I really dont think I could handle that. Your houses must be built way better than the ones here to deal with that cold!
They moved pre-Brexit, so no visa needed.
Glad you are getting better Melinda :)
Hello Melinda, how are you doing today
The only difference between permanent residency and citizenship is you can vote you can still travel and work even just with the temporary resident card if you registered before brexit it's the same as it was before brexit
Hey guys, I hope yopu dont mind me asking a quick question. If we buy a property and have no debt. What would you say is a comfortable monthly retirement amount required to live in central Portugal. We are looking to retire in five years and reno a Rancher/Bungalow 1 acre thereabouts, average couple nothing crazy internet Tv and usual bills to pay
Have you done a video on on managing humidity inside the house?
Hi Roy, not really, our house is so basic with tijolo brick walls and no insulation so we get it really bad. I have found that keeping the house warm with fires or the aircon constantly stops most of it but does use a lot of energy!
I think a better insulated house with airconditioning for heating would deal with it much better.
P.S. the rats were/are the screamer episode for me!! 🤣😂😱
The Portuguese passport is ranked #4 in the world.
Hello Carol, how are you doing today
u were lucky as white south African to get a passport to escape.i feel sorry for the remaining.have no option but to stay.with few job opportunities.
I moved to Portugal in 2017 after Brexit… but moved back to London in 2019…. Had I stayed, I’d would have got Portuguese citizenship… what a fool I am 😭. I honestly thought Brexit would be cancelled… then covid lockdowns trapped me during the last days of being able to move back to Portugal. Now I’m stacking bitcoins… one day I’ll move back.
Once you mentioned Bitcoins we knew you were an idiot.
Ken has gena been to South Africa x
Yes shes been a couple of times when I've visited family. Her last trip was in around 2010 though. I havent been back for about 7 years.
May I ask please, with respect, if you get a referral fee for those properties (OK Portugal) you have filmed . I understand it is your business - excellent videos-work. Only asking so for those of buyers can have a bit of leverage with the agencies -owners. Thank you much !
Hi Grace, I dont get a referral fee, but Buyers and Sellers can hire me to make detailed video tours.
@@OKportugal It seems this CL agency is a bit shady . No website , did not send property documents per request but sent your tube video instead - questionable and suspicious. I asked if his agency is registered and he is licensed . He did anymore reply. I think he sending your you tube instead of property related documents is making an effort to show they are legit by associating their agency with you . Pity . One must be careful and mindful about such conduct. Thank you for your offer and reply .
@@gracefrey6509 you dont have to be an estate agent to sell your own property in portugal. CL buy and sell property. I can't answer for why they are not responding to you.
What's happened to campervan ideal to travel about
We still have Bob the campervan but he needs a lot of work. The roof has deteriorated badly and its leaking all around the ceiling hatches. Think it needs to be rebuilt and I dont have the skills for that.
First aid was the first and last book the spider read...
That book was the last thing that went through that spiders mind 🤣
and it was no help at all@@OKportugal
Where are you doing the A1/A2 courses?
You can most likely get on the free courses offered by the local Camara. Get in touch with the local high-school and they can put you in tough with the right people.
Oh wow, back in south africa i had lots of Portuguese friends in my schools, but they all used to speak Portuguese at home with their families.
Travelling is great all cost money and you have dogs cats to think about so campervan is ideal.
Mate in Castelo had a problem with his van mot ran out was a good van sold it for £500 he could have got it taken to uk on a trailer for £500 then mot would have got 3 grand
Dogs cats are a tie I was coming to portugal but can't use pet passport any more need a AHC animal health certificate £150 valid one trip only.
Wot does “yoor” mean?is it English
“Ja” is South African slang and it means yes.
When working for an agency I was sent to Littlehampton books , some worker from some other agency was having some problems and the supervisor asked me to help him as like me he was Portuguese but when I introduced myself in Portuguese he told me :
" Sorry , not speak Poland , Poland people very nice "
He had a Portuguese passport and told me that he worked in Coimbra but I could see that he never put his feet in Portugal and didn't know anything about Portugal , when I told the supervisor they checked his passport and it was genuine.
Growing up in South Africa I had a lot of Portuguese friends, but they all spoke Portuguese at home with their families :)
The time Run fast
I am looking for a cheap van to buy, if I remember yours was priced okay. Our SA currency are not worth alot.
Cars are all very expensive in Portugal. We bought our Campervan through Facebook marketplace in the UK. Think we paid 3500 for it back in 2019.
@@OKportugal Thanks
Traveling is great, but who is going to take care of your animals?
Can’t believe you’re still going on about that storm. Let it go.
Your feeling was right, England is going back to the dark ages 🤣😭
Não falam português ...nem o básico como querem um passaporte português? Não precisa ser como o Joseph que fala bem o português .😮😮
