    I've been debating on picking up the #40 or #50. I've been enjoying using my fountain pen with my Pentel brush pen, which was recently stolen. At least the perp's bag wasn't pressurized, and it blew up all over their clothes! Oh, right: All fountain & brush pens must travel in the plane's carry on with you, NO EXCEPTIONS, or it ruins everything. Pentel has an explicit warning about depressurization. Never had issues, with my pens sideways, or upright with me, sketching by the window.

    Thanks for the review. I have had a pentel bp for years, but have been very curious about the others, because of the sable hair. I hadn't realized they could use a converter, which is great. A questin about filling - when you refill with the converter, do you put the brush end into the ink too, like you would with a fountain pen, or do you fill the converter separately?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +5

      You can refill in either way. I will take out the converter to refill. There's some sort of hole near the bristles that I'm not sure if I want to block.

  • @RebeccaSB
    @RebeccaSB 4 года назад +1

    Do you find any difference between the metal body Kuretake and the plastic Pentel body as far as length of time before capped brush pen ink dries out? Do each have (or not have) an extra seal or little cap of some sort inside the big pen cap that helps keep ink (and I suppose the inky bristles) fluid between uses? I could imagine being able to use it several times a week but could go 7-10 days between uses. Do you rinse the bristles or clean off with damp tissue before setting aside between uses?
    And THANKS SO MUCH for your wide-ranging tutorials pulling together lots of great information from your artistic endeavors!, making it all look so effortless yet inspirational!

    • @teohyc

  • @NotOrdinaryInGames

    Also, something I just discovered. Do NOT use really rich, really thick black ink with brushes! Really undiluted ink is very sticky, and will stop the tip from snapping back to a point.
    To use thick really dark ink. dilute it with water first!

    • @ArtAntiDe
      @ArtAntiDe 5 лет назад +2

      Be extra careful with any "shellac" inks. They will clog up the tip and are almost impossible to remove. India Ink or pigment based ink should also never completely dry out. It will be hard to clean. If you don't need a deep black, for example if you just want to try and sketch or if you don't use the pen very often, then you can play it safe and use fountain pen ink. This is dye and water based and does not have pigment particles. So it will not clog and can be removed easily. However it's not water resistant.

    Thank you for this video! I just bought the Kuretake 40 based off your review, but I think they may have changed the design? I cannot take the top off. I just ruined the brand new pen trying to take that top off to get access to the whole bristle :(. It seems the plastic top is not removable anymore. Very sad since that's what I bought it for!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад

      +carolicious74 The plastic top is quite tight. Just twist it clockwise and anticlockwise bit by bit to losen it first.

    • @carolicious
      @carolicious 7 лет назад +1

      Teoh Yi Chie it can't be twisted. It is now just one whole piece of plastic. I've seen a few reviews mention the change as well, some people prefer the non removable top design because the top would become loose and twist the bristles. Perhaps Kuretake changed the design due to this concern or maybe the new whole plastic design is cheaper to produce.

    • @jhanschoo
      @jhanschoo 2 года назад +2

      For future viewers, I can confirm that the design has been changed, at least for the replacement part. In my model you can still wiggle off the tip, but what comes off is not just a housing but a rod-shaped feed (that can be reassembled without damage). To identify the model that I have, the gold band near the tip is not creased like in the video but flat.

    Great review, I’ve been a fan of the Kuretake no.13 for a while now and decided to splurge a bit and get the no.50 for something nicer in hand and smaller to carry, and honestly I’m at a loss. My brush is real hair and you can tell from the smell, but when I put the included cartridge it would not fill at all. I have no idea what the problem was but tried taking out the cartridge and flushing the brush it, poke it from inside and whatnot. Eventually I got it to “work” but the ink comes out washed out, I thought I still had water in the feed but after a lot of using it still comes out at like 60~70% darkness. Can’t say I’m not disappointed, I don’t know if I should try and get another brush tip replacement especially because I had the hope that the no.13 brush tip would fit and it doesn’t so I can’t even swap those around…
    Any advice?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Месяц назад

      Maybe have the pen tip face down for a night, and test the next day. My guess is there's still water in the pen. Since black ink is difficult to dilute unless there's water.

    • @impendio
      @impendio Месяц назад

      It’s gotten better with time but it is still not as dark as my no.13, weird. Now I’m worried about swapping inks on either of them if cleaning between inks dilutes the color too much. I still have a platinum converter in the mail and wanted to try with some of the ink cafe inks by kuretake themselves. I don’t expect their black or sumi ink bottles to work either as I don’t think those are even fountain pen inks to begin with. I might have to try with the carbon blacks if I want darker inks.

    Appreciate your videos. Have subbed. I thought to get a nylon brush pen to use for my ink drawings and I realize that it has a learning curve especially using it for multitudes of long lines. Do you recommend real hair over the nylon for this traditional inking since I go slower than most probably? It's traditional as in American, I suppose. The type done by Alphonso Dunn. When speaking about traditional inking my mind would go to the art that Japan and China did from ancient times.

    I am looking into getting a Kuretake 40 or 50, but I have been using a Kuretake Bimoji as the local art store carries them. I have not used the Pentel but I was curious if you have had the experience of using the Bimoji? I am curious how the Bimoji compares to the 40/50? I know the longevity of the real sable hair is going to be far superior and the ability to refill will pay for it's self over time compared to buying several disposable Bimoji but how much better will the overall writing experience be? I am also curious if other Noodler's inks work well with the 40/50 as I wont be water coloring over much of my works I am less concerned about waterproof inks and more about color variety.
    Also thanks for the great videos, I've only recently discovered your channel and haven't watched everything yet, but what I have has been exceptional.

      +bmmcwhirt I don't actually use this brush pen for writing so it's difficult for me to judge its writing performance. The only thing to note is the bristles are what I consider to be a bit short. With natural bristles, they are probably more flexible when writing when compared to the sponge like brush pens.

      Teoh Yi Chie Just got my kuretake 40 yesterday and still playing with it now. But the bristles are quite bushy after playing around with it. Is there any way to get it back to normal?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +1

      redheadedme Use water to keep the hairs together. In normal usage, the hair should not be bushy. It's best to draw with them by pulling and less side strokes.

    • @rdhdhn
      @rdhdhn 7 лет назад

      Teoh Yi Chie thank you! I'm also wondering which ink do you use for refilling the cartridges. Did you experience clogging? If so, how do you clean them?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад

      redheadedme Most waterproof inks are pigmented so pen maintenance is required once in a while, especially if you don't use the pen often. This will prevent the pen from clogging. I use Rotring ink, those for technical pens. If you do not need waterproof ink, you can just go for typical fountain pen black ink.

      I thought mine was not, however, I tried to use water based inks over a drawing that was a few days old and had no problems. Came as a surprise because my first test smudged very badly only 15 mins after I finished the drawing. I really rubbed the liquid all over the lines to make sure it was really not smudging the second time. Pleasant surprise.
