    People questions what is the best lens. Probably the one you can afford. I've shot lenses from full frame fisheye to 500mm mirror. When shooting people and close quarters I was using anything from 24mm to 50 and slightly longer, like 105mm. So, for a first lens or one you want to keep on the body, I would vote for the Sigma. I got one for my son, tried it out to make sure it works and it is extremely attractive, quick in focus and very sharp. Absolutely no complaints. And since it can take near macro photos, it is also useful in crowded situation. If you want to go the video route, the 18-105 is king. Since it has OSS, the f4 minimum is no problem. But I do think this Sigma will be a jewel on the a6000 series, the perfect general use lens. It's the one you will take to parties, receptions, weddings, family gatherings.

    I have this lens and I love it coming from a sigma 30. Wish it had more range so that I can take photos of people from further away without disturbing them, but for the size it's a no brainer. It doesn't have that bokeh on the 30 but to me, taking more photos is the most important because I get lazy once the camera becomes chunky or requires changing lens. But for people who don't mind the weight and size, the Tamron is the better choice.

I’m a full frame shooter but these two small and compact Sigma lenses pair well and are ultra light in a small Tenba DNA-8 bag I originally bought for a Fuji X-E3 + XF 18-55/2.8-4. I feel like you missed the most serious competitor of the lens: Sony 18-135. Better range, have OSS, small and lightweight. Obviously you loose f2.8 aperture. You have to decide what is more important to you. I think loosing f2.8 is well worth it for the versatility that the 18-135 offers. It's a 200mm FF equivalent focal length. Probably the best standard zoom lens Sony has.

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I didn't include this one purpose since it has the "standard" zoom lenses aperture. Its not constant and not even f4 as you said. From those type of lenses I included only the kit lens since most have it already and want to upgrade from it but the rest of the standard zoom lenses I excluded. But thanks for the comment. Now i realize there is actually sooo many lenses in this range 😀

    • @snowleafecho34
      @snowleafecho34 2 года назад +2

      Agreed. These two are actually relevant not in the sense that they are similar lenses but in terms of both being good kit lens upgrade options just going in different directions. I ended up choosing 18-135 over the sigma for my usage but it is a really close call most times.

    • @project-overland

      Think the old 18-105 is a better lens than the 135

    • @sherwood5103
      @sherwood5103 2 года назад +4

      @@project-overland - Not for photography. Video maybe. The 18-135mm is sharper and also wider. For some reason, the 18-105 is not as wide, despite both starting at 18mm. Also 105 doesn't have a zoom ring. The electronic zoom lever might work good for video, but it's a pain for photography, you either zoom too much or too little. There's also a ton of chromatic aberrations on the 105. And it's huge and heavy for a small camera like A6000. The new Sigma 18-50 2.8 is great for street photography and low light situations. Then if you want a really good all round lens, the Sony 18-135mm is really good. Another thing the 135 can do well, unlike the 105, is very good macro shots at the telephoto end.

    A bit of background... I shot for many years with Canon crop sensor cameras (from the 30D to the 7D2) and the two lenses that I used for travel with a pair of Canon cameras were the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and the 70-200mm f/4L IS. I was quite pleased with this combination and carried it all over the world. However, I now shoot Sony crop cameras and I have grown old (82 at my last birthday) and have had back and knee surgeries.
    I will be traveling to Washington DC on an Honor Flight for military veterans. The trip will include a lot of walking and standing around. I needed a lightweight lens for my Sony A6600 that will provide decent imagery and a decent focal range and I have decided to order a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. The A6600 with Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens weighs 793 grams or 1.74 pounds while my Canon 7D with 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens weighs a whopping 322 grams or 3.22 pounds - almost twice the weight of the Sony combination.
    The Sigma is quite close to the focal range of the Canon 17-55mm (one mm longer at the wide end and five mm shorter at the long end). The Sigma doesn't have any image stabilization but, my A6600 has IBIS. Both the Sigma and Canon have a constant f/2.8 aperture which is fine for my needs.
    I am looking forward to receiving the lens soon and testing it out before I travel to Washington.

      Hey Richard, what a great read. Thank you so much for leaving such a well detailed comment. Having that background information really helps understand your choice. Sigma (especially lately) really focuses on compactness. Even if you had a full frame camera (which is always heavier and bigger), Sigma has managed to make their lenses for Full Frame cameras compact with their "I" series lineup (in case you feel intimidated of ever switching to full frame, these lenses might be a great option for you). Nevertheless, it was great reading about your upcoming plans and happy you still keep doing photography. Good luck in DC!

      I carried this lens on the trip and it was perfect. I shot 90% of my imagery as stills. However, I did shoot some video and while I would have enjoyed stabilization, I can work around that. I have had this lens super glued to my A6600...
      BTW: Tossing in my 85mm f/1.8 Sony as a travel kit improves my verstility at not a tremendous weight increase. I do love the 85mm f/1.8 for portraiture on both crop and full frams sensor cameras. @@TomsJurjaks

Yes it has heavy vignetting and not as sharp on edges as sigma but focal distance is really handy. Wide to shoot group of peoples and still capable to make single portrait. Vignetting can be seen even in viewfinder))) but it's easily corrected in lightroom. Now I understand why old photographers loved 35mm on fullframe film.

    Great video, as always. I recently went thru some big lens changes. Had a bunch of APS-C lenses and sold a bunch after seeing how I had been working 95% of the time. And so... sold my Viltrox 23mm f1.4. Sold my Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS. Sold my Sony 16-50 kit lens. Sold my Sony 18-105 f4 OSS, which kinda hurt me, because that lens I REALLY love, but... it's not so good once the day begins to go away, and so... I find myself doing most of my professional work on my Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS and my Sigma 16mm f1.4. I also have a Sony 55-210 that I keep because I got it really cheap, and it's a cool lens. ( I get everything on Ebay) I have a Samyang 12mm f2 (manual) as well, and I love that lens, but now I have made enough money from all my sales to get a zoom lens that will make me as happy as the 18-105 did, but for more hours in the day. I was all set to grab the Tamron 17-70, which sounds really good for me, a Sony a6400 user, and so the stabilization is helpful, but this Sigma 18-50 has me thinking that maybe I should go that way. I use my Weebill S quite a bit, but only for specific things. I generally like to just go out handheld and work like that, and so... I don't know. I think maybe the Tamron is the way to go for me, but to save a few hundred dollars, get the same quality, (all of these lenses are awesome if you know what you're doing), I'm not sure which way to go. I guess the extra reach is a good thing to have, but the stabilization is drawing me closer to the Tamron. I DO like the idea of the smaller lens, though. We'll see. but for now, I'm all prime, although I use clear image zoom quite a bit, and so my lenses are kinda/sorta zoom lenses, right? I also might not do anything, keep the money, and upgrade to full frame over the next 6 months or so, but I'm not really sure that's necessary. The A74 is calling me!! lol. It never ends. lol. thanks for the great review. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more....

      Hey buddy and thanks a lot for such elaborative comment, it was really fun to read it.
      I think you've done the right thing and I would do exactly the same, get rid of all unnecessary stuff without hard feelings. I wish I could do that too but unfortunately I need my gear for 3 things:
      - Landscape Photography (which is my calling);
      - RUclips content creation;
      - Videomaking (everything outside RUclips)
      And that means I need different lenses for different reasons.
      But if I were you, I would definitely consider the Tamron. It might not be as sharp as Sigma, but most likely it won't be as noticeable in video (if the AF is on par).
      If you don't mind the extra weight, size and price, get the Tamron as stabilization and extra cost will be beneficial.
      If you care about the compactness and want a bit more image and build quality - Sigma is your go to lens.
      Let mr know what you decide in the end. Reallly curious to know. And good luck 💪

      @@TomsJurjaks Ahh... I actually kept my Samyang 12mm f2 (manual) to have that ultra wide perspective, just in case, and I also have a Sony 55-210. I got them both really cheap. ;) The Tamron is calling me, mostly because I do narrative filmmaking. I actually just shot a feature length film on my phone, believe it or not. Twenty months of my life. ;) I come from the theater world, I'm a solo theater performing artist and playwright, and just started filmmaking because of the pandemic. All of my work got canceled, obviously, because all live performance was shut down, and so, I gave it a shot. Now I'm all the way in. I learned more over the past almost two years than in my entire life combined. ;) From people like you here on RUclips mainly. And so I'm not sure which lens would be better in terms of sharpness, but that's the least priority for me, since I'm just making movies. No still photography at all, really. I guess if I used the gimbal a lot with the Sigma, maybe that would be better, but I kinda like working hand held most of the time, and so, gimbal only when I really feel I want an uber smooth shot, otherwise, I'm good with the organic look of hand-held. I'm not sure which way I'm gonna go, but I'll make a move pretty soon. I'm shooting a documentary now, and that will teach me a lot about what I think I need. And who knows? Maybe the primes will keep the money in my pocket in the long run. But I think it's good to have a "go to" zoom, as well. Great tool. Thanks so much!!

      I'm the same boat as you. Currently own the A6400 with a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 & the Sony 18-105 f/4. Love the Sony zoom lens but as you said, not the best in low light! I would love to one day upgrade to Full Frame but I'm just a hobbyist so realistically, no point for me as the prices are a huge increase. I'm definitely keeping my Sigma 16mm as I love to use that for Astro, but currently contemplating selling my 18-105 & looking to upgrade to a zoom with better low light capability. This Sigma 18-50 (while losing a lot of reach as the 18-105) is currently at the top of my list of options!
      Which option did you end up going for?

      @@TBKR90 I actually sold my Sigma 16mm, and I got a Zeiss Batis 25mm. I like the focal distance better. Closer to 35mm on my camera. I just never liked the way the sigma 16mm looked, it was just way too sharp for me. The Zeiss is on my camera most of the time now. I have a 16-50 kit lens, but I think I’ll eventually get that Tamron 17-70 because the more I work, the more I realize how important stabilization can be in the lens. I just don’t use my gimbal unless I really need to, so a stabilized lens really helps with the a6400. So that Sigma zoom is out for me. As far as full frame and upgrading, I’m not sure that would really make a difference for me in my filmmaking. I’m more focused on better glass. But you never know. 😉

    Thanks for the great review. As a recent a6000 owner this new lens really attracted me. I have the Sony 16-50 kit lens and recently bought the Sigma 16mm F1.4 which I love. Looking to mainly do indoor and outdoor portraits with the camera so I am looking for a good lens in that focal range. I am still leaning toward adding the sigma 30mm & 56mm F1.4’s to complete the trio. Low light performance and really good bokeh are ideal for me so might forgo the versatility of a zoom for having a few prime F1.4’s. It’s a tough decision for me and I keep going back and forth.

I know that the latter is a wide and a prime lens so it’s like comparing an apple to an orange…however, 16mm seems versatile to my opinion (can do landscape, can shoot in min focus distance, and even portraits based on your sample shots from previous review) so not sure what lens to get. But anyway, I love the intro, your shots were all beautiful… keep on creating 🙂🙂🙂

    It is probably a good lens. However my only lens for my a6600 would be the Sony G 2.8/16-55. Better reach on both ends and really sharp.

      No doubt that your Sony lens will last years, but is not an overkill to pay almost 3x more and not even get OSS? Always curious about that.

      @@TomsJurjaks You are right on the money part but you also have to pay attention to build quality, the IQ, AF and the seamless work with the body. I am a pro, so it is a tool for me and I bet you won’t buy cheap tools for your trade. All my cameras and lenses are Sony except an old manual focus 1.2/50mm Zeiss lens which I love…

      I have come to a very similar conclusion @@MiKaplar all my Sony lenses are performing fantastically and I would not use a cheap Viltrox lens for client work. However, there are also exceptionally good lenses from other brands - like Sigma with their 5-7 year warranty and "art" lineup which are as capable as Sony. So for me sometimes it is hard to justify, but I totally agree that you need the best for your work 💪

      @@TomsJurjaks You also right about Tamron and Sigma art lenses. The problem for me is that almost all have some different color, vignetting and flare behavior and speed of AF. Some of them have rings turning in the wrong direction if I remember correctly. Many also extends when you zoom and does not have good weather sealing or not sealing ar all.
      However if someone is a amateur shooter (Not you of course) with limited budget - they are more than fine, and can take good pictures with them.

      Thanks! I think it is partially weather sealed. The lens mount has a rubber gasket. But im not sure if all rings has sealing.

    This focal length to me is not wide enough and. Not long enough as a single lens solution. It's too much of a compromise in focal length for the size and weight,, if that's 16-50 will be a lot more useful.

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 года назад

      Or the 17-70mm from Tamron if you don't mind bigger size. For me that would be my choice probably as a single lens solution.

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 2 года назад

      What are you shooting that you need those extremes? Wider than 18mm seriously distorts people and 50mm (75mm on APS-C) is a reasonable portrait focal length. I can see wanting tighter for head and shoulder shots or bird photography or macro but not as a general purpose documentary or environmental portrait lens.

    Thanks for review! I have A6000 with kit thing and SONY 55-210 OSS... Will SCENE SELECTION - HAND HELD IN TWILIGHT (one of those camera built-in programs) help with not getting shaken/ unsharp shots since it doesn't have OSS? I understand that photos taken outside on sunny day won't have sharpness problems... Just worried about those taken under not so ideal light conditiins since it lacks stabilization... Better go for the this SIGMA or SONY 18-135 OSS?

  • @Jameshhl
    @Jameshhl Год назад

    Perfect for casual like me, only draw back is no OSS. But if you got A6500, A6600 with in camera stabilization, or a ZV-E10 like I do, I just use Catalyst Browse post stabilization.

      Perhaps a Tamron 17-70mm would be better fit for you. I believe it has VC (its stabilized) and has a better reach. Should be great for your needs.
