Do you want to learn how to replace your snow blower's shear bolt? In this video, we will show you how to replace a shear bolt using an Ariens snow blower.
I only wish *everybody* did this. Thanks, Ariens. This has been my first -- and probably my only ever -- Ariens product. You guys definitely do *not* do the engineered-in obsolescence thing. I'm really happy with my Compact 24 after 7 years of service!
My sheer bolt broke on both ends and the part in the middle of the shaft is stuck in there but good. Can't even drive it out with a punch. Been soaking it in WD40 the last couple days but doubt that's going to help. Mine is a 1965 10M4 Sno-Thro. Replaced the bolt on the right side easily enough, but that left side where it broke it must have deformed enough on both ends that it just refuses to be driven out. Think I'm going to try drilling it since it's 58 years old and I don't have any warranty to void at this point, LOL!
Great video. How do you get one out that is rusted to the shaft? I have a Deluxe 30 that has a shear bolt that WILL NOT move. I've gone as far as to put a 6 inch C-clamp on it with one end of the clamp on the nut of the broken bolt, and the other end of the clamp on a socket to try to move the bolt, and it will not move.
We're sorry you're experiencing this issue. We recommend taking your unit to your nearest Ariens dealer to resolve the issue: www.ariens.com/en-us/dealer-locator
Thanks for asking, Al! Can you please be a little more specific on the part you're referencing? Once we have that information, we'll do our best to lead you in the right direction.
@@Al-tl2ov Thanks for clarifying, Al! The rubber edge with hardware kit is Ariens part number 53201800. You can either source it from your local Ariens dealer, or you can buy it online at the Ariens online parts store. Good news is that it's in stock: parts.ariens.com/product-p/53201800.htm Hope this helps!
I dont see why this would matter, but does it matter which way the bolt goes in? Also, does it matter if an auger is rotated 180 degrees, while the other auger remains in its position, and then the shear bolt is inserted?
Thanks for asking! And no, neither matters. Simply align the holes in the auger with the holes in the auger shaft and install a new shear bolt and you'll be all set.
Using slip joint pliers on hex head fasteners is never recommended, to be used only as a last resort. Correct tool choices would be another socket wrench, an open end wrench, a box end wrench, a ratcheting box end wrench, etc. Also, unnecessary use of socket extensions can lead to difficulty turning the wrench squarely and securely with the fastener, and can also lead to difficulty holding the sockets on the fasteners (shown at 2:19 of video).
The reason why he tells to use pliers, is because they will slip when excess torque on bolt. Basically making it idiot proof for the common non trained tech
I have a older ariens snow blower I bought used i dont know what year it is but it looks like the size of the one in this video and has a 7hp engine. I dont have a owners manual so have to I find the right oem shear pin.
Hi there. If you reply with the 6-digit model number and 6-digit serial number of your unit, we'll help you find the right shear bolts for your Sno-Thro.
Thanks for the feedback, Dominic. Sounds like it's time for us to make an updated video that shows those details. To remove the broken shear bolt from the hole, stop the unit's engine and align the holes in the auger and the auger shaft. When you see the broken shear bolt, use a tool like a screwdriver to push or punch the broken shear bolt out of the holes, then install a new one.
@@AriensChannel Thank you for your reply. I tried a punch, but the bolt didn't budge. I drilled half-way through the bolt, while concerned i was voiding my warranty. That released tension and the bolt was knocked free. It's now fixed and I was able to blow snow into the sky and chop through the monster berm left by the plow. :) #Tahoe
Hi Jeffrey. We're not sure what the cause would be, but we suggest taking your unit to your nearest Ariens dealer so they can physically inspect the unit and diagnose and resolve the issue. Uhh. The video was ok. I changed the bolt quickly. But then the starter cord pulled right out of the machine. I’m shocked it’s this flimsy. I may need look into other companies🤔
Not much usable info. My new Ariens sheared the bolt and the shaft walked out of the housing about an inch and a quarter. He doesn't explain what to do in that case nor does he explain how to find the hole when the hole isnt' there--the bolt sheared off and it all looks the same now. Pretty worthless video. Anyone knows how to put a bolt in a hole and tighten a nut on it.
We actually updated this video just recently, George. This one any more helpful or is there anything which is still unclear? ruclips.net/video/F40C5BEa7eI/видео.html
@@AriensChannel This video is a bit better because it addresses how to look for and get the sheared piece out. My problem was a 1.5" gap between the auger drive shaft and the end bearing and you could slide the auger left or right by 1.5". I didn't know if the blower housing containing the 3-bolt bearing was bent outward or if the drive shaft walked out from the differential. So, I used a 5-lb hammer and very firmly beat the end of the bearing about a dozen times. That closed the gap to about 3/4". Then my neighbor found the hole with the sheared pin in it, drove it out, and we put a new one in. I have no idea of the consequences of beating the hell out of the 3-bolt bearing to close the gap. I don't even know if the blower housing moved or the shaft moved. It's still working though. Thanks for getting back to me.
@@AriensChannel The others have given you some excellent suggestions about what additional information to include in your video. Actually, you're video seems very well done as far as the production of it. It's only the content that needs tweaking. Oh, I have a lot of formal education (BS, M.Ed, and Ph.D.), training, and experience in Instructional Media and Technical Education--shop manuals, videos, stuff like that.
Excellent, thanks. Had our first one shear... 7 hours before a winter storm warning goes into effect in 4 degree temps. But it's changed and working!
Good to hear! Never hurts to have a few spares around. You can find more at our online parts store at parts.ariens.com.

Dump some naval jelly on it and wait a bit.
Penetrating oil and let soak then hammer, or heat from torch then hammer, or heat then BIGGER HAMMER.....
sounds like you need a bigger drill, bro
I used penetrating oil, a center punch and a bigger hammer. It took some pretty good whacks. All done now, though.
