  • This snowblower repair video will show you how to replace the shear pin on your snowblower auger. It never seems to fail, your out snowblowing and you suddenly hit a chunk of ice or a branch and break a shear pin on your snowblower auger. Now only one side of the machine seems to work.
    Don't worry these are easy to replace and are made to fail when the auger in your snowblower housing comes in contact with something hard.

    Thank you ! Thank you! Thank you! This morning I didn’t know why my snow blower wasn’t working and barely knew what a shear pin was. Now I’ve just replaced two of them and greased things up, thanks to your video. Excellent video.

    Shear Pins are designed to break off. Lesson number 1-NEVER tighten a shear pin bolt. They are designed to me almost a full turn out and left loose. This is what allows the pin to break off "as designed" and save the gear box from damage. Lesson 2- Refer to lesson number

    Good video , Nice tip on the augers , but we should also do the axles and wheels so that they to stay removeable . there are other parts to be lubed for controls and bushings. Next video maybe.

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  5 лет назад

      Thanks for watching Chris. Yes, you are correct there are other parts that should be lubricated on a snowblower. We wanted to keep the video specific to this particular part.

      Like your vids , only issue here is if you have to replace a shear pin it's probably sheared and you will be punching it out vs simply unscrewing and pulling in out.
      Ariens is a great snowblower, I have a 13 that runs perfect but ran across a pricing error at home depot and got a 1200 one for 700 so now I have two Ariens. Lol

      If the auger isn't turning when engaged it may be due to a broken shear pin

  • @tedgarland5004
    @tedgarland5004 2 года назад +1

    Great video buddy, love the Boston accent!....my question is where do you buy the specific Ariens model shear pins or are they roughly all the same size?....and is that a grease gun you used on the auger?....I need one of those too!

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  Год назад

      Most of them are probably the same. You Ariens dealer can get you the correct ones.

    So shear pin is just a bolt or is it a special bolt that breaks under a certain pressure loads?

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  4 года назад

      It's a special bolt that is designed to fail under stress so if the auger comes to a sudden stop it doesn't damage the machine.

    Excellent video. I have an Ariens snow blower Deluxe 30 and now see on the left auger no shear pin. Like it is missing. I was wondering why my snowblower seemed to get stuck a lot and not blowing a lot of snow. I put a clamp on the controls so I could watch and saw that the left auger was not turning. I have always just greased that nipple but never knew that one had to take the shear pin out to do it.
    Question. Does one have to purchase exactly the same size shear pin that broke or as long as it fits into the hole and is the same width. Other-words does not matter if it is say a 1/4 of an inch longer than the original?

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  Год назад

      It shouldn't matter as long as it doesn't come into contact with anything.

      @@HomeOwnerRepair Thanks for your reply and one must take out the shear pins to grease or only if one wants a super grease job. (Is it that the shear pin would block the grease from going down the auger shaft?)

    So I decided to snow blow a bit into my yard just off the concrete, to clear a path through the 1.5 foot lip of snow for my dogs. Got maybe half a foot in and hit the dog chain my wife left in that exact spot after letting the dogs in last. I know I was careless at the end of clearing our drive that runs from our back yard along the house and too our street. Long story short I ran to the hardware store for a set of bolt cutters to cut the dog chain and make things manageable. The clip part of the chain that hooks on their harness is jammed up in the chute auger (its a two stage snapper). Is there a typically easy way to work on that part of the blower or should I call the shop that sold it to me to pick it up for repairs?

    Hi Tony. The shear pin on the right side of my Ariens snowblower auger shaft sheared off and needs to be replaced. I have a new pin, but now I can't line up the holes on the right auger with the holes on the shaft. I've tried shift the auger a little to the right and left and have spun the free-spinning auger, but cannot seem to line up the holes in a way that allows me to install the new shear pin. Any suggestions on how to locate the holes on the shaft? Does the shaft need to be shifted? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  3 года назад

      See if there is some play in the auger does it move to the left or right at all that will allow you to line the holes up.

  • @thedyslexic9936
    @thedyslexic9936 4 года назад +1

    When you were finding the hole for the pin, you got it in the hole and then pulled it out and put it in from the other direction. Do the pins have to go in from a certain direction and if so, how do you know which way. Thanks.

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  4 года назад

      On this model the holes are not tappered so them can go in either way. What you want to do is make sure that the auger stays in the same position that it was in when you remove the shear pin. While filming I had rotated mine by accident but have fixed the rotation since. Hope this helps you out.

      @@HomeOwnerRepair That is my question... BOTH AUGER BLADE SHEAR PINS BROKE, SO BOTH BLADES WERE SPINNING FREELY, I can replace the shear pins with no problem, my problem is..... How does one know what the proper auger orientation is ( I have an old (Garden Way Inc.) Troy-Bilt 42010, 2-stage, 8-HP, 24"-split auger). Once I figure out the proper orientation (Right side auger blade orientation in respect to the Left side auger blade ?) I will stamp both shafts with in-line punch marks so I don't have this problem again in the future.

    Trying to find those two in the middle of a snow storm is a very bad time indeed.
