Chicken Round-Up

  • Today is chicken round-up day, when we catch our laying hens to move them from the winter house to our eggmobile, and bring them out to pasture for the summer. With over 300 laying hens, it is a big job, so we enlist the help of our kids to catch and carry chickens. We set up the eggmobile in the pasture, and explain how our pastured poultry system works: eggmobile design, the fencing we use, and the benefits of keeping laying hens on pasture.

Pulmonary fibrosis used to be called "farmer's lung". It's a lot like emphysema in that it takes many years of breathing in small particulate matter to turn into a chronic condition. I'm sure you are immune to salmonella, but please understand that while pulmonary fibrosis may not be infectious, it is eventually deadly- my grandmother and dad both died of this disease. It's not a pretty death either- it takes years and is excruciating. Please wear a mask whenever you're exposed to a lot of poultry dust. I love your channel and I want you around to make videos well into your 80s. And for the love of God, learn to fell a tree safely! You are an incredibly smart man and I've learned a great deal watching your channel, but a few of the things you do worry me. Please use your intelligence to take care of your health as well as your farm. I wouldn't take the time to write this if I didn't admire and care about you, Pete.

Norway like Japan has a no-tolerance policy on salmonella. If a test is positive the farm has to be completely shut down and sanitized.
    Same with MRSA in pigs.
So it is infuriating that our neighboring countries have given up the fight, it is completely doable and it means we are by far the european country with the lowest antibiotic use per lb of meat.

Mr. You seem to be very good at building things. Just an idea. Why don't you make an area were you can add a ramp inside the building and were you can add a small room (I guess kinda like a hall way)on that building so you can just push the chickens into the chicken mobile. It might not stress the chickens as much. You can back up your egg mobile to the hall kinda thing. Kinda like one of those ramps for the cows to be loaded. It might save you time.

I've seen a few youtubers don masks to do chicken chores and warn their audiences how important it is to do so. Seems odd. Can't say I buy into their fears. But then again many of them are people who lean pretty heavily in directions I don't, in other ways as well, vinyl as a component of a coop build, chickens as pets, and or just a tendency to spend on their chickens as a modern day hobby and an outlet for consumerism.
We all have our own philosophical outlook. I have s second job at a rural king. Today a customer at the register told me we had a protester at the back of the store trying to convince the other customers that the baby chicks ought to be running free through the store. Apparently her message wasn't hitting home. 😂

I am curious. If we left the chook food out in the open and uncovered trays as you do here in New Zealand the consumption would go up by 50% over night due to the wild bird flock, sparrows and the like and we would also be over run with rodent pest i.e. rats and mice. We use lidded feeders with a weight operated treadle which the chooks cope with very well and it does very well in keeping free loaders out. How do you cope with this problem if you have it at all.

As a kid helping my parents with chickens we always used a "catcher." It allowed catching without greatly disturbing the others. Perhaps slower than your family helper method. The "catcher" was commercially made; about 4 foot of heavy wire with a bent hook on one end to catch a chicken foot. The other end was a wooden handle for the operator.

Star head/torx screws are all i prefer to use on anything anymore. If you're gonna re use or remove them, spend the money on good coated ones or even stainless steel. And for re use, coat the threads with bar soap. Cuts way down on friction heat and breakages. In my opinion..........
