The S Curve Cane in Polymer Clay, a Tutorial.

- This creative cane gives a wonderful pattern, each time slightly different, but all with a flowing look due to the initial S shape in the design. I take you step by step through the whole process, which is good for beginners upwards, so sit back, relax, and then have some fun and make your own.

Polymer Clay is oven baked, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the brand of clay you are using.
I used FIMO Soft Polymer Clay, but all well-known brands of polymer clay will work well for this project.
For the second design I showed, I used White/Lilac/Plum, Gold/Sunflower Yellow/White and a Dark Blue (Windsor Blue with a touch of Black) /a mid-range soft Blue/White.
I used a Pasta Machine dedicated to Polymer Clay use to create blends and condition the clay. If you do not have a pasta machine, you can condition the clay by hand, by cutting it into slices, and then rolling the clay in your hands until it becomes soft and malleable. If you want to create sheets of clay, roll the clay between two even stacks of playing cards to get an even thickness in your sheet of clay. On my machine settings 3 is 5 cards (1.5mm) thick and setting 2 is 6 cards (2mm) thick.
You need:
A Polymer Clay Blade, or something similar (please keep fingers away from sharp edges)
A small Roller
A smooth non porous work surface - I work on a large ceramic tile.

Hi fiona, again another perfect example of your amazing work, I was wondering if you could do a tutorial to make poison ivy's eye pieces, I'm making the costume for my daughter, and I would rather follow you in a tutorial, I know they're only leaves, but it's the construction I'm struggling with, can you help x

Okay, I've had a look at poison ivy, which seems similar to other ivy leaves? and there are some tutorial out there already for polymer clay ivy leaves. When you say eye pieces, are you trying to attach the polymer clay leaves above the eyes, near the eyebrows? If so, that would be quite difficult to achieve, most things I have seen are thin paper type leaves that can be 'glued' with make up to the face. I don't think that would work with polymer clay. The other option would be to make something to hang/go across the forehead, clipped into the hair on either side of the face, with the leaves then attached on thread or wire, so that they dangled in the right places? That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I have a list of planned tutorials over the next few months, so am unlikely to be able to fit this in, and am still not really quite sure what it is you are wanting to do, sorry I can't be of more help at the moment. let me know if any of that makes sense, or if I've missed the mark completley. Thanks so much, and yes I have some Cos Clay. I love it, for it's flexibility after baking. I am using it in parts of my sculptures and it is a great clay. It is quite soft when conditioned, so is a little harder to cane with, but it blends well, and I can definitley recommend it, especially for sculpture works 🙂

Oh yes it's brilliant for models, and if he wraps wire with some, (like limbs/tails/horns etc. then after baking the wrapped wire piece can be moved without any breakage. However, learn from my mistake! Don't wire wrap, bake, move the wire wrapped piece and then rebake, as the clay breaks where you bent it 😉 I learnt that the hard way. Dexter will be having so much fun with it 🙂

I’ve noticed several of the more ‘Anglican leaning’ speakers on RUclips use the term “SLITHER” to denote a small portion… whereas, I have always used the term “SLIVER” instead. Wasn’t sure if there was an English-American difference, or if I had simply been misusing the term.
To me sliver is a small slice, and slither is to slink away, much as a snake moves, if I said it incorrectly, it is simply down to speaking as I go, and not spotting it when I was editing out my 'speaking errors' of which I do quite a lot ! 🤣😂 My mouth doesn't always seem to conncet properly to my mouth, which is beyond frustrating, especially if I only spot it as I am doing the editing 😉 So no, you are not wrong as far as I know 🙂
