- This is a really fun and easy way to use up left over scraps of polymer clay. In the video I show you 3 ways to create this technique using either scraps of clay, or brand-new clay, to create a lovely detailed pattern. Suitable for absolute beginners to experienced clayers, I show you everything you need to know and take you through creating both the patterned veneer and a finished work.
So, sit back, relax and watch, as I take you through the process.

I also don't have a lot of elaborate leftover canes. So I love that you can use fresh clay and come up with such incredible designs. I'm gonna try this 1 today!I also love your calm manner Stopping and starting after . Helps keep tutorial from being an hour long! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much and have fun 🙂
I am very new to using clay this is a great help. I don't have any waste clay so showing how to make with new clay is a great help. I plan to make my first project after work today. Thanks so much for the tips.

I am glad you are enjoying them, thank you very much Veronica 🙂
I love it Fiona. Great tutorial
Wonderful, thank you so much 🙂
I'm absolutely your biggest fan, Fiona. I find myself watching your beautiful, precision work several times per video, so I can focus first on technique and tools, then on patterns, then on colours, etc, etc.
Your work is absolutely gorgeous and I aspire to your level of both technical expertise and artistry.
Thank you so very much for being willing to share your gifts so openly so that beginners like myself have a world-class bar set for both my learning goals, and my own art work.
Thank you so much, what a wonderful comment. I am so happy you enjoy the tutorials and hope you have loads of fun with polymer clay projects. best wishes, :)
All 3 veneers are stunning!! What a great way to use scraps! 💜 And the pendant is fabulous! Great tutorial, Fiona!!❤️
Thank you so much Cindylee :)
Another fabulous and extremely useful tutorial. Thanks Fiona. 🙏🙏🙏
Eventhough most of the times I know exactly what you are going to do, I never fast forward through the end of your videos. Because they are so therapeutic to watch with your calm voice narrating the steps. 🙏❤🙏
Ahhhh, bless you, thank you so much Elegantaste :)

Oh wow, thanks so much Jenifer :)
Beautiful as always
Thanks so much Louisa :)
I love your technique. I don't measure much and will try with my canes I have. Nice video. Thank you.
Thanks so much :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals You have many on here I will be checking out!
What a lovely tutorial Fiona! I've been concerned that I have so many ends of canes and didn't know what to do with them. Now all I have to do is find some time to sit down and do this! 🙂
Me, too, I'll be doing this with my cane ends for a while. thanks so much Liz :)
Your voice is so relaxing
Thanks so much Sam :)
Wow! This is the most incredible discovery that you have worked out. I cannot believe how you still got beautiful pattern out of scrap and chopped pieces. . Thank you for sharing Fiona,I am learning a lot from you.
You are very welcome, thank you Lilette :)
Thank you so much for sharing your technique.
You are welcome, thanks so much :)
I just organized my clay and, my goodness, I have so many canes and cane ends and scrap clay..... your tutorial has been very helpful! Thank you!
brilliant, thanks so much Leigh :)
Love these. Thank you xxx
Thanks so much Cindy 🙂
What a wonderful video to show this technique. Your instructions are very clear...just like a class. Thank you for sharing!!!! 😍😍😍
Thanks so much Jayne :)
What a wonderful way to use up my scraps! Thank you!
Thank you so much :)
When you load the extruder, it seems the main color of the first bit is what surrounds the long extruded piece. Soooo, if you want a light or bright color, you'd put that as to come out first. Just FYI. I love watching you do these polymer clay mixed up canes.
Thanks so much Susan :)
Overall I prefer the veneer done with new clay, but as it's a scrap clay technique, out of the extruder and hand method, I prefer the veneer completed by hand, it appears much brighter, although it is not as uniformed, that's the pros and cons of different methods.
I think the end pendant is wonderful and something I am inspired to try, thank you for sharing your ideas Fiona.
Thanks so much Deana :)
Beautifully done!! I'd have thought you'd need to separate the colors, to match the color wheel. Amazed you can use all the colors together and it looks fabulous.💜 You always inspire. Thank you for another great tutorial, Fiona❤️
Yes, I love all the colours in together, as long as you have a good mix of light and dark tones, the colours just go. Thanks so much Minky Toms :)
As I was reccing your comment, I glanced up and spotted your name. 😳
Please remind me not to marry you! 😆
Insofar as Fiona is concerned, *she* is who I want to marry! I often leave her vids on, unattended, just so I can be soothed by her voice. I’ve dozed off watching ‘em before (not because they’re boring; noooo! It’s because her voice is sooo calm, and calming, and she hasn’t any verbal tics*. I’ve sometimes listened to her when I was upset about something and discovered it took less than *four minutes* to calm the heck down!)
Number one on my bucket list is a trip to meet Fiona. With my luck, though, chances are excellent that she’s a dragon who snarls at people in a crazy high-pitched, LOUD raspy voice, the kind which makes you keep clearing your throat when you hear it, and I’ll be overcome by the urge to put a plastic bag over her head and squeeeeze really, *really* tightly.
As always, thanks for everything, Fiona, and hi, Minky; it’s nice to meetcha (but not so nice that we hafta be married!) (yet, anyway 😉).
*WRT verbal tics, in the past three-fives years, why on Bob’s green earth have polymer artists started filling their tutorials with “Now let’s go ahead and …” and “Now you’re going to want to …”? There is a small number of them who do it several times in a SINGLE SENTENCE! And they add absolutely NOTHING to ANY sentence! Watch:
*Tutorialer*: Now go ahead and put the clay in the pasta machine, and …
*Sane people*: Put the clay in the pasta machine …
Just one more so your brains don’t explode:
*Tutorialer*: Now you’re going to want to put a little bit of mica powder in the lid of the jar. Go ahead and dip your finger in the mica, getting a little on the tip. Now you’re going to want to lightly touch the clay with your fingertip. Go ahead and brush your finger lightly across the clay, and you’re going to want to cover that area with the mica powder.
*Sane people*: Put a little bit of mica powder in the lid of the jar. Dip your finger in the mica, getting a little on the tip. Lightly touch the clay with your fingertip. Brush your finger lightly across the clay, and cover that area with the mica powder.
See? In the examples without the tics, you saved 27 minutes by not reading extraneous words. Over the course of your lifetime, that’s 256 years you *didn’t* spend reading words which add nothing but wasted time!
I can’t think of a way to suggest to people that they listen to their own vids to catch any errors hoping they’ll spot the tics, but these days, even constructive criticism couched in all the affection and love in the world will result in hate mail, threats, and doxxing by people trying to “support” someone they believe has been “attacked,” so I’ve simply had to stop watching certain people who drive me *too* far out of my mind to listen to ‘em. It’s a shame, but those seem to be the only two choices: to go ahead and and listen, or just not. For the sake of my sanity (which I can already hear you questioning! 😉), I choose the “not” option, and hope that those artists I love the most (Kathleen Dustin, Fiona, Bettina Welker, etc) don’t pick these wretched habits up or else I won’t have *anyone* to listen to!
(FYI, Fiona, you haven’t any verbal tics that drive me crazy! Not ONCE have I caught you saying so much as a single “um” or “uh,” and I love you all the more for it! 💕)
To anyone who’s made it this far: Hi! 👋🏻 And I’m sorry. I live a shockingly solitary life, and when I do this, composing these “Beowulf”-like messages, I suspect it’s because I’m lonely. I’m sorry you ran into it. 😞
Wonderful fun
Love it, thank you
I am so glad, thank you 🙂
So pretty.
Thanks Stephanie :)
this brings out so many ideas on what i could do with the technique! Being Christmas time, everything I think is of course, Christmasy....color combo's, etc. I do have to say, while my clay is put away at the moment still, I am cleaning up my 'craft area' (aka whole room) so that I can get it back out after New Years. Feel free to send me all your cane ends however, I know you must be overloaded with them LOL. Love the cane end extruded one best, but all three are gorgeous!!
Have a fantastic crafting time in 2020, and thanks so much :)
So pretty, I really like the green. I like the way you put it all together.
thanks so much Artie :)
Oh Fiona this is such a wonderful tutorial; it looks like very delicate mosaics. I love this. Thank you so much for your fab tutorials and yet again your soothing voice has really relaxed me.
So glad you like it, thanks so much Karen :)

Thanks so much Leona :)
Once again, so marvelous!
thanks so much Judith :)
Oh my goodness, you’ve done it again! This is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing...you are so talented! I have often looked at the ends of canes and wondered what I could do with them. Looking forward to trying this 😃😃
Yes, I love that I can do this with the ends of mine too - so much fun to have :) Thanks Emma :)
Very entertaining tutorial! And interesting too. I love any technique that uses up scrap clay, but your pendant must be the prettiest I’ve seen done using scraps. TFS
Thank you so much Marion :)
What a great work 🤩🤩🤩
Greetings from Finland 🇫🇮 ❤️

Oh i love this technique Fiona. Stunning always
Stunning, the link I clicked for the template comes up i Australian dollars. Is that correct?
@@Bea-vw4hn I believe that Etsy automatically converts it for you. Are Australian dollars right for you? If in doubt, contact the Etsy seller and ask for their advice. I hope the link is working okay, it certainly does it in pounds for me :)
Thanks Annelie :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals No I am English.
@@Bea-vw4hn Oh okay, I have no idea why that is then :( It comes up in pounds for me, is there a box somewhere where you can convert the currency? Is this the only site on Etsy that shows Australian dollars for you, or is everything else in pounds? I am so sorry not to have an immediate answer for you Helen, as I say I have checked and re-checked it from my end, and it comes up in pounds :( Definitely get in touch with the shop owner if you cannot resolve it. best wishes, Fiona
So beautiful❣ TFS dear, i love it💕💕💕💕💕
thank you so much :)
I tried it, and am loving my stuff.
Brilliant, thanks so much Irma :)
Amazing
Thank you :)
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I bought an extruder for myself yesterday. I just made one of these but now I have no clue what to do with it lol
@@chevynovascotia3301 I know, I love making the canes, but then it's what to do with them ;) I try and give some ideas in my videos, but have a search round RUclips or Pinterest, as there are loads of great designs people have suggested in tutorials, and one should inspire you :) have fun !! :)
nice
Thanks so much 🙂
