I do love your presentation's. You don't dilly-dally around, and I do appreciate that you are organized and precise in what you are doing. Totally great work!!! Thank You
Thanks you Ms. Fiona, you voice is so very soothing, I am brand spanking new at this, however in the end, it is my goal to be able to cane like you!!!!
Such a pretty cane, Fiona, and you present the steps so well it all seems sooo easy! Thanks! And I love that ypu give such nice ideas for actually using the cane. Beautiful work, as always!
Another lovely tutorial with a lovely cane. Again, your colour choices are so pretty and you explain the steps so well. I will definitely be having a go at this one. TFS.
This is so pretty. I love to make little fairies with fantasy backgrounds for hanging on the wall and this cane would be perfect for making leaves. You have a lovely voice. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic :) Yes, when I help the British guild demonstrate at the big shows, one of them is on at the same time as a big Cake show, and so many of the cake artists come and watch what we do and get very excited in how they can translate that into sugar paste techniques. Thank you so much for letting me know you have had such success with this one :)
I to sometimes struggle with that after theee yrs mostly with pens I wanna see some one show a video of laying the different canes that make the perfect pen
Thanks Mary, I use white so often because I normally use FIMO Soft, and that needs white in the middle to soften the colour blends. The other brands blend slightly differently, so it's not needed as much, but still gives a nice look. I don't always use white ;)
It is an Ikat Cane, made to resemble a particular type of fabric design/weave. There are many RUclips videos on different ways of creating this look, all of which are great fun to try :) If you search under 'Videos of Ikat Cane Techniques' there are lots to chose from, so I couldn't single one out for you. I hope that helps :)
I would love to know a little about how/when you started working with Polymer Clay. Did you start by creating other things first? I started sewing clothing, zippered house dresses for my dear mom, work clothing and suits for me, clothing for my daughter, until she turned 13. Drapes and curtains for each of 7 houses through the years. In 1997 I took my first quilting class and I was hooked❣️ In 2010 my sis in law showed me how to make some woven necklaces, but I really wanted to play with PC, Wire and Metalsmithing. This is where I am today, selling most of my quilting fabrics and books, and making PC jewelry, wire working and learning how to use metals, torches, soldering, etc.
yes, like you I have been creative, making all and everything and developing into an artist all my life :) I have more details in a bio I have on website, link in the details below the video above :) Sounds like you have lots of fun :)
I love this cane, but I also love the gridded background surface. could you tell me what that gridded background it and where I could find something like that? Thank you so much. Smiles
Thanks Sue, It is an 'Xcut 13 x 13-inch Tempered Glass Cutting Mat'. I bought it at one of the big craft shows in the UK a few years back. I am sure it will be available from quite a few craft shops, or from an online store. Hope that helps :)
Very pretty cane. Nicely demonstrated. Thank you. Your pasta machine sounds like it's much better than mine, which is barely limping along after very little use, driving me crazy, and going in the recycling bin as soon as I have a replacement. What manufacturer/model do you have?
Thank you Pam. I use an Atlas Pasta machine, it was the first brand I bought, and I have stuck with them over the years, so far, touch wood, they have always been good machines. I had to replace the first one as I accidentally put some sharp metal through, hidden in clay and created a big grove in the rollers. And the second I took apart to clean, to see how it would work, never quite went back the same, wont make that mistake again either!! (Other brands you can (and I have) put back together again fine, but the Atlas is made slightly differently I think). Now I am on my third, and still going strong with this one, which is a 150, and I also bought a 180 (the wider machine), which I use if I need a wider sheet of clay. Other brands are of course available, and are equally good, but I stick with what I am happy with. Hope that helps?
Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals Thanks for the info. You're the third to recommend the atlas 150 to me, so it's probably time to polish up the credit card and get one!
Thank you, I know I have a very quiet voice, and it is not always easy to hear, so I apologise for that. It is something I am hoping to improve as I make new videos, but I think I may need to invest in some new equipment, so that may need to wait till I can afford some ;) In the meantime, don't forget that you can add the captions to all of my videos by clicking on the cc button at the bottom right of the screen. Although the text is not always accurate, it is good enough to be able to follow any bits where my voice goes too soft :)
They are Beautiful! You do have a beautiful calm voice but sometimes I have a hard time hearing what you say because it is so soft and I can't hear like I used to ..sorry ...I love your work though!
Thank you, so sorry you have problems hearing me, I know I have a soft voice, I do try and put the volume up as far as possible, will try harder with new videos :)
Tried this today and it came out gorgeous! Thank you for your videos!
That makes me so happy, brillaint, and thanks so much for letting me know 🙂
So pretty!

Hello Fiona you explain with a lot details thank you. Could you do a video how to do perfect round beads with insert of canes?
Thanks Erica, will add it to the list ;)
I to sometimes struggle with that after theee yrs mostly with pens I wanna see some one show a video of laying the different canes that make the perfect pen
Such a beautiful cane!! I LOVE the colors!!
Thank you :)
You are going to revolutionize clay, especially skinner blends. The strip in the middle makes such a difference. Looking forward to more! Thanks.
Thank you Joyce, so glad you like the video, and yes, I find that strip of white makes all the difference :)
Beautiful work thanks so much xx
Thank you Ann :)
Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals you’re very welcome
Lovely cane and brilliantly described thank you
Thank you Janet :)
I'm enjoying your tutorials but I'd like to see you do more skinner blend without the white in the middle. 😊
Thanks Mary, I use white so often because I normally use FIMO Soft, and that needs white in the middle to soften the colour blends. The other brands blend slightly differently, so it's not needed as much, but still gives a nice look. I don't always use white ;)
Fantastic tutorial Fiona.
All the best,

Thanks Paul :)

Hello Fiona x please could you tell me the grammes uses for each in this inset cane? 💜
The square blocks where you see 4 ridges are 14g, the smaller rectangular block with two ridges is 7g :)
