In this video I share how to make this lovely African flower square in crochet.
I made this blanket a couple of years ago and have had a lot of questions regarding it.
Details:
I used a 3.75 mm hook - the same one that is shown in this tutorial today.
amzn.to/3sBUqFv
Susan Bates Finishing Needle for Ends
amzn.to/32AVsaf
The blanket is 36" x 54" - not including the scalloped border.
8 squares across and 11 high.
Each square is 4x4 inches
I used a pack of yarn called "sweet pea" that was created for a "CAL" with Attic 24 . attic24.typepad.com/weblog/sw...
I did not participate in the crochet along - just wanted to use this color recipe for my blanket.
www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/attic...
This one pack was all I needed for the blanket.
If you are in the USA, you can find the yarn here:
www.lovecrafts.com/en-us/p/st...
You won't find the sweetpea pack but here are all the colors in it:
This pack contains 15 balls of Stylecraft Special DK (100g), a 100% acrylic yarn, in the following shades:
Pistachio (1822)
Meadow (1065)
Cypress (1824)
Violet (1277)
Lavender (1188)
Wisteria (1432)
Clematis (1390)
Cream (1005)
Soft Peach (1240)
Candyfloss (1130)
Blush (1833)
Pomegranate (1083)
Fuschia Purple (1827)
Magenta (1084)
Plum (1061)
For the border, I first did hdc's all the way around in green (hdc, chn 2, hdc on corners) . Then, I did another round on this with sc's in the same color I was planning for the scallop edge (purple) . The scallops consisted of 7 dc's with sc's between each to anchor them down. If you want to see a video on how to do this , let me know.

Hey everyone! This is a requested video on how to make this fun African flower motif with a square edge. I have added details in the description box regarding the yarn , hook and blanket details if you are interested in making a similar blanket. If you have any questions that I've missed, be sure to ask. xx
There is no description box!
@@meenabarker6608 yes there is . Look for a little triangle to the right of the text under the video and click on it. You will see the description box . You may also be prompted to click “details” to see everything.
I’d recommend searching how to find the description box on Google or here on RUclips if it’s hard to find . 💕
@@meenabarker6608
I too, cannot find the ‘little triangle’. I’d like to know the granny square measurements.
Thank you😊
Thank you for no long introduction with silly music...like the beginning of a movie I enjoy all your tutorials. You teach clearly and quietly...without telling us all about your worries and woes!! You have a Perfect Touch. Blessings to You and Yours
How kind, thank you! 😀💕
So beautiful. Thank you. I love the fact that you explain the theory of each round to allow us to get the bigger picture. I will always remember the ‘P’ tip too. That will be invaluable in the future. Love this!!
Thank you !
I have crocheted for about 8 years now, and I have to say I have so happily picked up so many new techniques and tips from your experienced hands! Like looking for the letter "P" tip. Ty so much. I know this is an older video, but I will keep picking through your playlist to play hooky with yarn regardless!
Thank you so much , your message means the world to me 😀💕🧶

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I knew the basic stitches of crocheting, but never knew how to follow a pattern. Your easy instructions have given me a good start to learning. I now have one compete square done and ready to complete all of them. Thanks again.

Awesome tutorial! I’ve been looking for instructions for this beautiful design. Thank you.
Wonderful tutorial, thank you for making it for us! Your square doesn't ruffle compared to other tutorials I've seen. Love how you make your corners with the treble crochets.
Thank you ! - some of my squares still came out a bit wonky so blocking them helped but definitely wasn’t necessary for the majority of them 👍🏻👏🏻💕
That's super easy and beautiful 😍

I just made one, woot! That was fun, following your tutorial. I think I'll be using standing stitches more and more often in future. I like that it eliminates some knots in the work. Thanks as always, Roz!
That’s great news! 😀🧶💕
I love granny squares. Like mile a minute, they're both easy to take a long. Non traditional squares are what I like. They require a little more thought but breath taking. This square is beautiful. I'm going to make this into an afghan. Thanks. 🤗Hugs and cheek kisses for this design. 😇
So happy you like it, thank you 😀😙💕
I like the stained glass look in granny square pictures I have seen and I made my first African Flower square trying to achieve that effect. I used a dark brown for Rounds 1, 4 and 6. I used a bright blue/green verigated color for Rounds 2 and 3 and a bright green for Round 5. It came out nicely! I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Coffee, Macaw and Jade with a 6.5 mm hook (K). It does look very much like stained glass!
Sounds lovely 🥰
Hello from California! I Love this tutorial! Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️
Hello back from the Gulf Coast, so happy you liked it, thank you ! 😃🌸
Thank you so much for helping me to complete an afghan that I started some 40 years ago for my son. There was once a pattern which I have been hunting for the past few months to no avail. I decided to find some more modern granny squares and in doing so have just completed this square. Most granny squares just didn't work with the instructions given but yours was by far the best one I found! The reason I have decided on completing this afghan was because some squares were done by my mom and will be a nice keepsake for my son or his two newborn sons! Thank you again and am looking forward to future videos.
Oh my goodness, what a wonderful story, thank you so much for sharing it with me. I’m honored to be a part of your keepsake 💕
Soooo pretty! Next project. 😊
Thanks so much for such a wonderful turtorial so amazing
Thank you !
Thank you for the instructions. I love african flowers. Many times I block squares with steam from an iron. It helps crochet the squares in correct stitches. I am making a pillow cover for the couch. Daisy and Blackeyed susan colors. Thanks again. I have subscribed.🌻
Wonderful! Gorgeous!
Thank you for this helpful tutorial 🌼🐝
It is very well produced 🎬
Love this video simple explanation good size of hook and yarn easy to understand thanks for sharing

Thank you. Good refreshment for my memory.
Thank you! 💕🧶💕
So pretty. I’ve got to do this 😊❤
Thank you. The square looked so pretty once finished, and your instructions were very clear, and may be my next squares to make. Right now? I am working on my first granny squares. They are sunburst granny squares, and rather enjoy making them. 😊
Wonderful! 😀🧶💕
Thank you so much!!! Now i can do it myself ;)!

. Thank you. This is absolutely beautiful.
Hi Diana , thank you . Great and ok on the border 👍🏻 💕 I’ve done 2 videos on how to join this blanket and the links are in the description box . Glad to meet a newbie - hope you’re enjoying crochet ! 👏🏻
Hi I have enjoyed your tutorial and the pattern. It's a treat to the eyes. Beautiful ..I must say. I always look forward to a nice project. This one is amazing. I am hoping to take 5-6 months to make a blanket. I work full time so my hours that I can spend on this are limited. The first square I made took 1 hour and I am sure the subsequent will take less time. Cheers and God bless.
I hope you enjoy making this - mine took about that long as well . It’s a labor of love but being surrounded by the colors is relaxing ❤️ keep me posted!
fantastic tutorial, thank you very much! ❤
Thank you! 🧶💕
So beautiful ❤ you are queen of crochet ❤ Going to follow you forever ❤️
I’m so happy you think so , thank you 😀❤️
I love this flower
Love your tutorials, thank you ❤️😊
Thank you !
I do have a question….my flowers are done but wondering if there is a certain way to weave in tail from magic circle?
@@christinahofstrom5648 to give a nice tight join I usually make sure to weave the tail in 3 different directions and then call it good. 👍🏻🧶
Ok thank you 😊
beautiful!!
This was very helpful. Have a hard time following written instructions sometimes.

Thank you for this video it’s beautiful! I’ve started one last year but it’s on hold, haven’t had the urge for crocheting because of my husband passing, I’m slowly starting back to crocheting. This one is definitely on my crochet bucket list. Thanks again hugs to you and your Kitty 🐱
Hi there how are you doing?
Beautiful
Thank you !
Wonderful 💐
Thank you!
Thank you ❤️❤️
❤️
Me gusta mucho sobretodo que se pueden entender fácilmente gracias❤
Thank you so much 😀❤️🧶
Did you need to buy an extra skein or two of the green and purple to do the border or was there enough in the Sweet Pea kit to do this? I am a newbie to crochet as well and have finished 9 african flower squares and am learning the seaming and border while I await the kit which should arrive any day. I'm very excited!! Thank you for your easy to follow tutorials!
Ugh - guess what? I bought the pack twice not realizing I would have plenty left over in the first one. I was a complete newbie with figuring out yarn amounts when I started that blanket. So unfortunately I have to say I’m not sure there will be enough in one pack for you for the border. Sorry about that 🤦🏼♀️

Your flowers are pretty do you have a tutorial making those same flowers with a granny square blanket but not a solid granny square doing a regular granny square baby blanket with the flower being the center
Hi / I’m a bit confused on what you are asking. Are you looking for a granny square with a flower in the center or are you meaning you this particular square worked up like a more traditional granny square?
I have 2 videos with flower granny squares:
I have this one that can worked as a traditional granny square. Instead of just working 2sides, you can go around all 4 with your granny clusters.

And here’s a granny square with a flower in the center

Hello this looks gorgeous! If I wanted to increase the size of the squares do I keep repeating the border?
Hi and thank you! Yes, you could repeat the border or just go up a yarn and hook size if you wanted the entire square to look larger. I used a dk/sport weight (3) . You could try a worsted or Aran instead(4) 🧶💕
Hi there. Thank you for your wonderful instructions on making the African Flower Squares. My first attempt at crocheting after 50 years of knitting! After four months I now have 88 squares and am ready to sew them together. I have watched your video regarding this and think with a little practice, I will be good to go. My question is, you show how to sew 4 of the squares together but what would you suggest for 8 squares across and 11 down. Should I do 8 strips of 11and then sew the strips together? Should I sew 4 across and 4 down and then sew all the squares of 16 together? Should I just sew them together one by one? What would be your suggestion be? Seems like it will get fairly bulky by the end of the process. Thanks for your help! Heather
When I did mine I joined several together to make a panel then joined those panels together. So I think that is similar to your 8 strips of 11 that you mentioned. It really is a personal preference and what is most efficient with your yarn as you’re seaming. But that way did work well for me . I’m so glad you are trying crochet!! I hope you are enjoying it !!! I’m you in reverse. After 30 years of crocheting I’m finally learning to knit and I love it! 😆🙌🏻🧶🧶🧶❤️
Could you please tell us what size your square is and how many squares, length- and width-wise, did you use to make your blanket? I've fallen in love with this and am working on one now. 💕
Oh sure 😀 with the dk /sport weight yarn , the squares are 4.5” x 4.5”inches. I made a 3’ x 4’ ft blanket and used 88 squares total. 8 along the width and 11 rows high.
I used a scalloped border which added about and inch to the overall measurement. 💕
Such a great tutorial as usual, thank you. Do you have a tutorial of the strawberry vest / sweater. Rows of strawberries with green accent leaves. If not, could you post a tutorial of this? Thanks so much.
I’m not familiar with this sweater but assume there must be a designer that has provided a pattern?
@@PlayHookywithMe The pattern are rows of strawberries that have dimension. There are several tutorials, but for me they aren’t easy to follow like your tutorials.
lovely!
mine is do not want to be flat. it's getting really curvy. i m using a 4mm hook with a size of 3 yarn. its recommend a 4 or 4.5 mm hook. any tip?
It sounds like you need to go up a size higher. Try a 5mm.
Also you might want to add and extra chain (or stitch) in your corners to help loosen it up. 👍🏻
This a beautiful blanket. I would like to make this bigger what are the multiples for this lovely stitch?🙃🙂
Thank you ! I made this video over a year ago so I can’t remember the multiple but I’m sure you can figure it out as you watch the video 🙂
I'm sorry I'm not seeing what you said you put in the description box, where is it? I just recently found you and love your videos. Your quickly becoming the teacher to beat. ❤️
I found it yay! However I went to attic to see to order of the yarn you ordered and only saw uk prices. Are there u.s. prices?
How kind, thank you. The description box is below the video. If you are on your phone, you’ll see a little arrow to the far right of the title of the video.
Once there, you’ll see the details . To expand it , click the “more” button 💕
I ordered that pack from the UK .
They now sell this yarn in the U.S. at Love Crafts.
Here are the colors if you try to but from lovecrafts U.S. :
www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/attic24/attic24-sweet-pea-cal-stylecraft-special-dk
So beautiful. My question would be: how many colours are used, and what is the strategy of keeping overall balance in their appearance. For example when I use five colours with four per square, there is 120 combinations what is about a blanket size. But if not going with one of each, how can I think so that some colours do not over take to different impresion or desired colour dominance?
In the description box, I share the color pack I used. I think it was a pack of 16 colors. I have to admit, Ksenija, I just took a chance and combined colors without much planning. I didn't find it an issue where one color dominated more than the others. One thing that helped - I would put each color to the side after I used it. Then I would not reuse that color until I was finished with all 16. Not a perfect plan, but it worked for me. Hope that helps. xx
Hi there how are you doing?
@@PlayHookywithMe Thank you for the answer. It is a good strategy. And you have a good eye , it looks overall very stunning.
i've been crocheting for a few months, and i'm currently on my third square, but i find that no matter what i do, by the end, my square always turns out crinkled, like it won't fully flatten out. i am considering blocking the squares to see if they stay flat when stretched, but i just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem. this is a great tutorial nonetheless :)
Good evening, I’ve just received my sweet pea wool and was wondering if you have a colour chart for the squares please, I, trying to copy your blanket for my daughter. Loving this tutorial thank you xx
Thank you ! I added a link in the description box under the video with the pack I used. Initially I ordered it from the UK but you can get this yarn here in the US also.
If you are just wanting an idea of the color range - you’ll see the list of them in the link.
There is a little arrow to the bottom right of the video (if you are on your phone) and then you’ll see a place to click “more”.
Hope that helps
@@PlayHookywithMe thank you very much, I’m in the UK so ordered the yarn and have it and ready to start. Thank you for your help.

This is beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial. Do you have a written pattern for it? ❤❤❤
I’m sorry , I don’t at this time You might be able to find one, though, if you Google it or search other similar videos ❤️
Could you do a possible explanation on the same pattern, just with the same color? Is it different than changing colors?
Hi Jhan, good question. You can work this in the same color following the video. You might have to slip stitch your way to the starting point of a round but I’m not 100% certain on that. It has been a while since I worked this pattern.
If you get stuck on a spot , just let me know which round and I’ll help you the best I can.
You can reach me in the comments here or on Instagram @playhookywithme. 💕
How many stitches per side should you have when done with the square?
20 plus a chain in each corner . So 22 if you include those middle stitches In the corner .
Hello this Pauline how are you I have Bought your pattern from the African Violet top and dress pattern. I've been a little difficulty doing the side. I understand the square. What the side is giving me a lot of trouble? Is there any way you have a tutorial for that section? I did see you.Refer me to your video but I watched that video before.Hope you could help me.Thank you.Continue, keep up the good work.I learned a lot from you over the years.Thank you
Hi Pauline! I am not the designer of the dress and top pattern. I only teach how to make the square and she included it on her written pattern . The designer of the dress is who you need to contact . Her details will be provided with the pattern I’m sure . Good luck ! 💕
Is there a written pattern for this anywhere? I love the video and have made one square but would like to have a pattern to refer back to. Thanks!
I haven’t written one but it has been several years since I learned this pattern so maybe someone has during that time. I’d search Pinterest /Google .
Otherwise, I would recommend that you write notes for yourself so that you don’t have to keep watching the video.
That’s what I do when I can’t find a written pattern. 💕🧶
Anyone know where the description box is please as most patterns say this and no description box to be found
Search on Google or RUclips “where is description box in RUclips” and you’ll see many videos showing how to find it 💕
It doesn’t seem to matter what I am doing. I am on round 5 starting in the exact same spot as you. ALL clusters have the right amount and no matter what after my first four SC there is THREE stitches left so when I skip two I am not going into the spike. Any ideas where I could be going wrong. I moved over one and it worked out until after the first corner and was no longer lining up.
It really sounds like you’re overlooking a stitch somewhere. That’s really easy to do because the previous stitches can hide it sometimes. Are you remembering the “p” trick and getting into the top of the stitch leaning to the right?
I’d recommend you just “fudge it “ and find a way to just get those stitches in even if you have to add two sc’s into one stitch if nothing else is working.
💕 this is when I wish I could be sitting next to you to see what’s going on to help you more!
Keep me posted .
You'll have to thank Orion for making an appearance. 😻
I will ! 😆😆😻
Amazing 😍
Thank you! I hope you try it 💕
