A touch over £100, but I got the Decathlon MT900UL a couple of months ago, seems similar to the exos but a bit bigger, with a side zip into the main compartment and with a rain cover supplied. Very comfy and can fit a lot of stuff in
I have the kestrel and find it to be an excellent product for my long distance hikes. The pocket you use for your sit mat is actually for your water bladder one point I would raise is when using the bladder the pipe needs to be facing the rucksack otherwise the pipe entry point to the bladder digs in your back.
Absolutely right about the useless side straps, all it needs are two horizontal straps that don't interfere with the excellent side pockets, sort that Osprey and you have THE perfect backpack, in my opinion 😊 👍
Good seeing these two side by side boss. I think the Kestrel wins it for me for the poles side pocket and the ability to unzip for side entry. Also, it comes with a rain cover! For the win! Nice vid.
I never knew about the trekking pole thing! It's a revelation! I got an Osprey Kyte 65l, a women's fit. Love it, great value for money and brilliant for a shorter build. Great video, I've learnt something new today.
I have the old kestrel 48. It's just the perfect size for me. Im not a hardcore camper tho. It's just perfect size for an overnight hike or couple of nights trip somewhere (weekend sort of thing). The side access zipper is the reason Im leaning to buying this newer version. Already have ROI on the old one.
Nice review. I ended up trying them all on at rei and the kestrel was the most comfortable for my body. Taken it out twice so far and it's really great.
I have been looking at the exos for probably 4 months and missed it in the sale. I was absolutely heartbroken. I've just seen the kestrel online for £95 and thought I'd try and find a comparison. So pleased you made this vid mate. I'm just starting out wild camping and I think the kestrel might actually be the better fit for me. All the best 👍🏽
I have the Kestrel. I use the bottom compartment for my tent and couldn't do without it. One thing to note is that the smaller size reduces the overall volume. I didn't realise this when I bought mine so ended up with a smaller bag than I intended buying.
Had a 2017 exos 48 in medium. Changed to the latest exos 48. My torso length fell between the new sizing of sml/med and lge/xlge. Bought the lge/xlge but found that with the harness setup for my torso length the pack extended 10cm behind my head and the contour of the frame did not mould to my back. Also the waist straps were excessively long for my 32” waist. Exchanged for the sml/med that fits well. My torso length is in the 19-20” range. My advice is go for the shorter pack if you are reasonably slim and have the option.
Another good review. I sold my Exos 48 and 58 when I splurged on an Atom pack. I really regret that decision. I could pack more comfortably with the Exos 48 than I can do with the Atom Mo 60. The only down side with the Exos range are the sad little belt blisters (they are not pockets). It’s also a pity the Exos range doesn’t include a rain cover although I don’t ever use them (prefer internal waterproof). The nice thing about the Atom Pack is the material and available colours.
Interesting. I've been eyeing up he Atom packs. So many love them. On the Ospreys, I find the pocket sizes ok. At home, santa dropped a few new osprey bags, one 68L, a pair of 66L and a 30L. All the pockets look to be a similar size, same as the new exos. Ok for a mobile phone (S10+) and a few chocolate bars on one pocket and go pro in the other (room to spare). Suits me, but I guess some people want to carry more and why many end up adding a chest compartment. My Vango Ozone 40L, love the bag to bits but sadly... the pockets are mesh (and still no bigger). I end up having a ziplock bag in there in case its one of those 'rare' 324 days of the year where it does rain. Still, can't annoy me that much since I ended up buying the 30L version too. haha ATB
I have the same Exos 48 bag and the first thing I did was to take off those side straps. Like you mentioned once tight it makes getting things out of the side pockets hard. Great bag though and very light. I fit my Hilleberg Akto in that front kangaroo pocket leaving the inside of the bag for everything else.
I have a 2019 Exos 58 for long distance, a Kestrel 38 for shorter hikes/overnighters and a Stratos 26 as a daypack. Highly rate Osprey for their value compared to the more popular roll top style packs from the States.
i m thinking of getting one of these two. I think i am going to pip for the kestrel but its defiantly a close run thing. Great video but it has helped to make the choice even harder 🤣
I looked n researched reviews on both in the 38 litres and went with the kestrel it's more sturdy got side zip access and the separate compartment for sleeping kit
both nice packs. i am not a fan of bladders/hydration bollx, just a plaggy bottle for me. I had one once and dismantled the mouthpiece to find horrid gunge. I also refuse to drink from something i cant see through, after almost swallowing a centipede
The Kestrel is now on sale as new model is out… I ordered it. Only true reason for more expensive Exos really seems to be less weight? I have an old Volt 75 I always managed to fill up. Was time to buy smaller pack. But that thing is solid.
I’m literally in the same boat as you, have the Kestrel and debating buying the exos… I’m not sure why the exos wouldn’t have a base sleeping compartment like the Kestrel. Also, it doesn’t come with a rain cover.. hmm.. think I’ll just keep the kestrel for the extra grams. Thanks for making this video mate.
I've got the Exos 48 and it's so comfortable but the frame makes the interior an odd shape and at the bottom where the frame curves there can be a void but I always fill with my spare socks etc. The good thing about Osprey is that they don't count the pockets in with the litre size so the 48 is equivalent to a 65 litre,
I have the 2019 exos and the kestrel 48 Gotta say the kestrel is more comfortable and stands up when you take it off rather than falling over like the exos does, surprisingly irritating! Don't find the shoulder straps on the exos to spread the load sufficiently they tend to squash into the shape of a small tube, haven't checked out the latest version tho
Think the Osprey Kestrel 58 is going to be my next rucksack, i can just about squeeze all my winter gear into the Mountain warehouse Higher 50 litre, But thats more like a rugged bushcraft bag and i want to start doing more long distance camps and multi dayers.
I read somewhere that the detachable lid was so when you leave base camp for the summit you have a small pack for essentials for the climb to the summit leaving the rest at base camp . Not sure if that is correct but also not something I will ever be doing ! Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and you family from mine .
Think I said to you before and other you tubers, Osprey packs do squeak ? I think it's in the back adjustment mechanism. I have a Rook 65ltr pack. Does annoy me but comfortable.
I have 3 eco packs, the straps leave a lot to be desired and side pockets suck, I come to the conclusion that all lite weigh packs r not comfortable an that is the name of my tune !!
Hi Daley, I noticed you have a 600ml water bottle in this video. I'm in the UK and have been trying to get my hands on a larger smart water bottle. One that can fit to the Sawyer squeeze. Have you had any luck finding an alternative to the smart water bottle that a Sawyer squeeze can screw straight on to?
Are you still using the Kestrel on your latest video, but have you still got the Exos and if not is it because you refer the Kestrel ? Both of those packs are closer to 200 quid now too!
@@daleyoutdoors I just got the Gregory Focal 48, its like the exos design but addresses most of the issues ;like the tension strapping that routes over the water bottle mesh side pockets, the flap that is too small to cover the pack top with the brain lid top removed and the plastic ladder back length adjustment that is not the best on the new exos. I bought a Kestral but just cant get on with a pack without the mesh floating back system, my old Exos was great the one without the hip belt pockets but it was a little too small at 38 litres
Hey Ben, I have the previous generation Exos 58. I'm assuming the side compression straps are similar on the new model in that you can have them outside the side pockets (as you've found them), or rethread them so they're inside (which is how I have them). I love the Exos, but with loads of over 12kg, on longer hikes, it leaves my chest, shoulders and waist sore. That little bit more padding on the shoulder straps and hip belt would help massively, so if the new model addresses this then I'll be looking to make an upgrade 😉
I fit the Exos 48 2 times already in my local outdoor store and the side straps are the only things that kept me from buying it already. I didn't notice that you could thread them inside, so I guess I'm visiting the store again this week!!
@@daleyoutdoors No, Ben, you're right. You can't thread the compression straps inside the pockets on the new one - I couldn't resist taking a punt and bought the new model once I found the back length is adjustable, unlike on the old model (I figured it wouldn't need thicker padding on the straps if the back were adjustable, and therefore able to distribute weight better). The new model is better in so many ways, it's such a shame that the compression straps are a retrograde, all for the sake of a couple of tiny cutouts on the side pockets.
@@taylorduff8272 I have had both, hard to say for me they are both very comfy with a medium load. The sierra designs shades it for me just a few more things that are good what the Exos doesn't have
Well I managed not to buy 1 lol if the side straps are anything like the talons they can be moved inside so it doesn't obstruct the pockets.i think there a good bag but I just like the bottom compartment it's so useful for me that's where my tent goes so I can get to camp and I'm not digging for the tent also in bad weather I can pack up in my tent then just drop it and it goes in the bottom.but the weight difference is the main thing I suppose
@@daleyoutdoors haha I nearly failed I looked a few times but now there sold out so I'm safe lol but tbh I'd never buy any other pack than osprey because the stow on the go the bottom compartment and the hipbelt pockets I just couldn't get on with a pack without them
Nice comparison Ben. Without checking I’d imagine you can safely carry a heavier load in the kestrel given it’s back structure and material. Exos is definitely one for hot summer with that nice cool back and minimal weight. Does it come with a bottle holder on the strap? I feel like the older version may have, but could be wrong.
#CinchInYourLoad 🤣 That Exos is pretty much the same as my Osprey Atmos 50 minus a few features... All Ospreys seem to squeak somewhere 🤷♂️ I do need a Kestrel in my life though. #Kes
