Different, well free ;) but also Parallels has that cool mixed mode that blends apps between the OS, I like them separate. Parallels is great and I have used it many times int he past. You could try both and see what you like.
That is the only way ... I had this issue with vSphere and vm greated in there. It's super anoying. But you can script it and never think of it again :). Revocery drive is not easy to remove.
Hey James, I'm using VMware Fusion the way you showed, pretty happy with (but hope Broadcom will push some active development on this SW). Did you also consider to use a MacOS VM the same way to isolate your dev environment from the host OS?
Hi James, Thank you very much for this video. I've been thinking about switching from Windows to MacOS for a while now because I've started looking into mobile development. One concern I had was: “Which IDE should I use then?” I have been using Visual Studio for over 20 years and have tried other IDEs, but it has always led me back to VS. Now I know how I would have to set up a Mac to be able to program MAUI applications in VS 2022.
You are allocating virtual memory, much more memory will be used. I never set the memory more thant 1/4th of what my machine has on it and infact probably less that 1/8th, and it isnt' a performance issue.
@@EduardoAG I didn't notice any difference with Parallels, had used the latter for almost 2 years on M2 Max, and recently switched to VMWare. The only noticeable performance difference is 3D graphics, where Parallels is way ahead. All other bells and whistles of Parallels are questionable.
I am using this on m1 Max and it is running great...no need for Parallels! The only thing I cannot make work and may not work is extending displays in windows so my laptop is not mirrored on my external monitor. Do you have any info on this and btw...this is a great video to help people get this all set up. Very well explained.
You need to be in Full Screen mode and it will extend: knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/305940/using-unity-and-multiple-displays-in-vmw.html worked for me
@@JamesMontemagno Apple silicon actually introduced support of nested virtualization since M3, according to Apple dev docs. However, it's unclear when virtualization software will introduce support for this. I believe UTM made it possible with Linux VMs.

Should be able to, haven't tried it as I just have an ultrawide: knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/305940/using-unity-and-multiple-displays-in-vmw.html
@@JamesMontemagno Thanks. I've read that article. My question was about if you have direct knowledge. Besides in latest release note (13.6.2), the Known Issue section says "The multi-monitor feature might not work correctly in specific topologies"
hey! Great tutorial however I can't find where to download the VMware fusion drivers and tools, because I didn't see the message, so how should I do it?
Great video! thanks 👍 the only problem is that it's not giving my the option to download Windows 11. These are the options it gives me. 1.Install MacOS from the recovery partition; 2.Import an existing virtual machine; 3.Install from bootcamp; 4.Create a custom virtual machine; 5.Create a virtual machine on a remote server. Any tips would be greatly apprectiated :)
Apple Silicon doesn't allow nested virtualization, you can just connect to the emulator running on mac: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/maui/android/emulator/mac-with-windows-vm?view=net-maui-9.0 or get a device, i recommend this
IT should or you could download the iso from Microsoft direct. See the docs: techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/vmware-cis/desktop-hypervisors/fusion-pro/13-0/using-vmware-fusion/creating-virtual-machines/create-a-virtual-machine/download-and-install-windows-11.html
I'm on the step 2 of downloading operating system. the progress bar is done and stop there "Downloading Windows11 esd file from Microsoft." I can't continue the next step. It just stops there. What happened?
how well does Visual Studio run on this not very well it seems, without win key the screen is stuck at 1024, compiled and ran hello world, it's only gonna get worse from here
That unfortunatelly is against Apple's terms of service to run macOS on non-Apple hardware from my understanding of it, although I am not a lawyer: www.apple.com/legal/sla/
Super helpful, James! Thanks very much!
Very welcome!
Brilliant. Many thanks, better than Parallels?

VS on Windows or VS Code on Mac which I uses a lot: ruclips.net/video/1t2zzoW4D98/видео.html

Thanks for the video. Is the performance good?
Its good, I mean, its not $99/year Parallels Desktop lever of performance but its ok
@@EduardoAG Did they fixed memory consumption? For example, if you allocate 4GB RAM, it consumes 8GB or more. Always double or more

- is it arm version of windows? (or x86)
- is it good enough for developers?
If you are on arm you get arm, if on x86 you get x86 :)
I use it every day so yes!
absolutely clear.

Did you install the VMWare Tools that I showed so you can resize properly. That fixes it. I run VS really great.
If I end up working for another company next time, I hope they will give me a MacBook. Even though I am a .NET dev. But I bet they won't do that 😅

Yes VMware fusion is free
