  • Let's just draw with pencils! I'm in my doodle mindset here; I don't plan it out, I start and just see where it takes me. However, the natures of pencils is that you can kind of be in the planning stage the whole time, which is much different than the pens I often use.

For a while now I have been sketching in pencil and then coming in with pen (normally fine liner). But I have been noticing that it is common for me to enjoy the pencil lines more than the pen lines, yet I always feel compelled to do the pen work otherwise the piece doesn't feel properly finished, as if I am seeing the pencil sketch as a lesser form. Ironically I don't look at other people's work the same way.

One of the most satisfying experiences, for me, is drawing with graphite on hot press cotton watercolor paper. Soft and smooth with plenty of feedback for control. If they ever make a digital drawing tablet that can match that, I'll become a digital artist.

Hi Peter, I enjoy your work and look forward to your posts. I love pencils because they loosen up my work (I don't feel the perfection monster as much). The "less smudge" product you are looking for is glassine - it comes in both sheets and rolls. They might have some at the college you could try... as well as mahl sticks (normally for painting) which you can make yourself if you prefer your supplies to be more personal. Take care and kind regards...

I feel the same about pens...maybe its because I never had such growing up. For me, just having a simple #2 pencil was a huge treat. Most of the time, I had to make my own with burn sticks. I really loved the organic-ness of the third drawing. Keeping hands off paper will prevent smudging. I've never used an artist's bridge (mulle). It's just keeping hands off paper.

Graphite requires skill building at smudge mitigation. A maul works well for this. Ink is good for just putting it down an living with what you put down. Erasers with graphite will cause smudges that you will chase until you quit in abject disgust! I hate charcoal. I love using dip pens in my studio for sketching and drawing. My best stuff comes when I just get into the drawing and let the drawing evolve to reveal what it wants to be. It gets pretty freaky but is ultimately satisfying when it is done. Realizing when it is done is the hardest part. Good job on your drawing today. You are really expanding your confidence. I really enjoy your work!

Love your work Peter and especially like seeing you use a pencil...I'm a ukulele maker that collects pens and pencils. I recently found a very cool, old (1960s) mechanical pencil in a box of stuff that belonged to my Dad. The pencil is double ended, one red and one black . The words "Skilcraft- US Government" is written on the side of the pencil. Looking it up I was surprised to see it was made in the 1960's in your town, Greensboro NC by Industries For The Blind and the company is still making pens and pencils to this day. They've made pens and pencils for the government for over 50 years. Thought you would find that interesting . Keep up the good work, I love your sketchbooks.

    1. Another way to keep your hand off the paper is to use a hand bridge (clear plastic turned down a couple inches at each end).
    2. If you put a gray ink, like Noodler's Lexington Gray, you can get more variable tones by building up ink sometimes and less elsewhere.

It was a revelation to me when I discovered that intenional smudging can greatly enhance a pencil drawing. Deliberate erasure can encorporate a different kind of look as well, which I've used in exploring the fascinating concept of negative space.

You need a workable fixative, and use it as you go along, or your drawing will get smeared if you go into already worked areas at all. Or rotating the sheet, too, your hand will smear he drawing.
That's why i get discouraged working with pencil.

We do have lots of other senses:
interoception - the sense of our own body state (which could be broken down into hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, heart rate)
    neuroception - sense of safety
proprioception - sense of body in space and muscle force
    vestibular - sense of balance
(They're very useful to understand for those of us who are neurodivergent or have sensory differences/strengths/challenges for other reasons 😃 )

In my unprofessional opinion, you are still using pencils as if they are pens. The joy in pencil drawing for me is the ability to make intense line variations, to start out with a light touch and then shade in the darker parts, or vice versa. It appears that you are using a pretty heavy hand and not really taking advantage of the ability to make nice faint lines, too. Also you're not utilizing the side of the lead for shading purposes, another opportunity pencils give you.
Hope you find that more helpful than annoying! Cheers, Peter. Always nice to see you.

There is nothing wrong with pencils.
Graphite, charcoal, colored, fineliner, technical, etc, etc, etc.
It's a tool, and I might say an important one.
Like brushes, stumps, q-tips, etc, etc, etc, tools allow you to create much more efficiently and effectively.
I love mixing media or just choosing one. Either way, use your tools, and your creations will be better.
