  • Yesterday, I set out on my first 100-mile bike ride in three years. To me, a 100-mile bike ride is the equivalent of a 26.2-mile marathon. Both require stamina and are highly mentally challenging. And sometimes, you need to know when to stop.

I rode my first and only century 20 years ago in the Boston area. It was August, 55 degrees and drizzling. I don't feel the need to do another another one now that I'm 65. Now I ride a hardtail as my only bike on 95% gravel and single-track. 50 miles is a good day for me... I have other stuff to do. Be safe!

Yeah, I tend not to ride on wet roads; it's not worth it, although I have done two centuries in downpours before I made that decision. I was happy with 55, I have two centuries on the schedule, stay tuned.

I'm glad that you listened to your body, Erik. I hope you snag the next century. Wishing you cooler temps!

The one thing I didn't see in your video was teamwork. I saw a lot of passing of others though. I can't help but wonder if you incorporated more drafting - yes with strangers - if that would've made a difference. That said, a few years ago I recognized that my days of riding centuries are over. They were fun and I completed them, but it's okay to move on.

Hello! Yes I was doing a lot of drafting, it doesn’t make for very interesting video though. I sat on the wheel of two guys for nearly 20 minutes like I was in the peloton at the #TDF - there were a number of factors at play, there were route marking issues and, I am riding a new bike which changed some of how my body was responding. I am in the best shape of my life, just didn’t feel like I would be in good shape if I went for it, especially riding alone

What time did you start? In the summer, you gotta start the gran fondos very early! Also, carry two bottles of water and some gel packets.

7:30 AM. I was hydrating on schedule and using gels. Just didn't feel like I had the total distance safely and I was right. This was my first long ride on a new bike and it caused some unexpected issues. All good. 55 is strong work too. I will get it done

It’s called train for the event like actually train. Don’t just watch a Tour de France stage and go for it. Most people think they are training but you have to work to get there. There will be pain. I tow a trailer for my training everywhere. Then if I race, I take it off. Results are impressive.

Good advice. I have completed this ride (and several other centuries) four times in the past, but this was my first attempt at 100 in 2-3 years. I have been more focused on running than cycling for the past few months (ran my first half in June) I watch the TDF every day but don't consider that training. :-)

@@erikdendress tow a trailer for a few weeks, I tow groceries home or supplies. And I’m purposefully loading it down with weight, as I feel better and better. Also I am not in 100mile shape. I keep around 30 miles average. On most of my rides, but if I was going to do a 100mile anything, I’d have to really work 6 months minimum so I could feel good about it, I am x university of Washington pole vaulter, don’t be disappointed, learn from this and go get the next one,

@@erikdendress ya I’m impressed haha. I haven’t even tried a century so anyone with audacity to start and give her hell has my respect. Plus you will laugh when everyone stares at you climbing a mountain with a trailer on. But I will say once you take the trailer off and ride. You feel like a young boy with endless legs. It’s a great feeling
