Actually, Cardigan is one song of 3 on Folklore that are about a fictional love story between 3 Teenagers, 2 girls and 1 boy. "Cardigan " is about girl 1, Betty, who sings about her boyfriend James, and looks back at this one summer many years ago, where he cheated on her with the 2nd Girl Augustine. (The other 2 songs are from the point of view from the other Characters. The Song "Betty" is the point of viewed from James and the song "August" is about Augustine looking back at that summer with James.)
@user-jo6wt2yf2h it's cool because there are references throughout like in betty James says "I'm only 17 I don't know anything but i know I miss you" as opposed to "when you are young they assume you know nothing" and the "and when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed you put me on and said I was your favourite" and "standing in your cardigan, kissing in my car again, stopped at a streetlight you know I miss you" and many others
Many swifties are looking back on this trilogy and wondering just how 'fictional' the story really is. There are so many references to all three songs throughout TTPD in songs that are almost definitely autobiographical, that maybe what we have is a fictionalisation of real events.
@@yfroggy13 I don't think so. She only said three songs, no? (besides, the "don't call me kid" implies an age difference that I don't think would be in the teenage love triangle)
@@davisfinney7526I never thought age difference but more of a someone who’s kind of destroyed u comes back around like nothing bad happened and calls u a nickname…sort of dismissive I guess? @@saharah101 Yeah it makes sense, and I think that's part of it, but I think saying "don't call me baby another part of that" and I felt like the kid was intentional in that way. I definitely could be wrong though. :) Edit: intentional, since she states that anyway with baby, so I think there is two parts to both words. (sorry I explained poorly before lol)
@@saharah101 I also think it could just be a power difference though, instead of age. Like the other person just assumes they are more mature, hence the "kid". Which is probably why I said age difference. My thoughts are all over the place rn lol sorry
"When you are young they assume you know nothing" makes me think of how older generations always tell younger generations they dont know anything about love/life/work cause theyre so young and havent really "lived" yet. "Heartbeat on the High Line" is actually referring to a park in New York called The High Line.
Taylor explains her Folklore songs in her Long Pond Studio Sessions. Be sure to watch those to get an understanding of the songs on the album. This is an album about characters rather than about her.
The line "a friend to all is a friend to none" is talking about the absense of loyalty. If you are friends with everyone it also can come off as disingenuine and fake. It ties into the line "chase two girls lose the one" because the guy in the trilogy of songs thinks he can play two girls, therefore lacking loyalty.
Audrey, the "put me on" line is actually a double meaning. The obvious one regarding wearing the cardigan, but also meaning that he lied about her being a favorite. It helps enrich the story, as the subject of the song is a teenage love affair, so it builds up the emotional drama to establish there's some level of deception.
Also I'm pretty sure the story of Peter Pan does end with him losing Wendy. If the Disney movie is anything to go by (my memory of it is so-so), Wendy kept wanting to leave Neverland cause they had to go back home but her brothers wanted to stay and she as the big sister kept being all responsible and grown-up but Peter would have none of it because he's basically eternally a child and he was offended that she wanted to leave. But in the end she and her brothers do go back and he stays in Nverland, so "Peter lost Wendy". It's also a really goo line for this song because, in the trilogy, this song is Betty singing about James, who cheated on her kept being immature about the whole thing, not wanting to fully take responsability for it, while Betty says "when you are young they assume you know nothing, but I knew everything when I was young", like she's not naive or innocent or immature anymore
"chase two girls, lose the one" references the folklorian love triangle, that has been mentioned in folklore's long pond studio sessions. in the story, james loses betty (the person that is singing cardigan) for august, after he has a summer fling with her.
The Highline is an old elevated train track that was converted to a pedestrian walkway. It’s an attraction in NYC so it tells you the story probably took place in NYC along with the reference to the last train. Also August took place by the beach a lot so maybe the jersey shore or Long Island beaches. ❤
I always saw "when you are young they assume you know nothing" is referencing the line in Betty when James is saying "I was only 17, I didn't know anything" and Betty is basically saying James should have known better.

I bought Nana a green cardigan one Christmas and when she passed her husband gave it back to me, and when you wear it, it's almost like her hugging you.
Cardigan is a part of a trilogy of three songs that being cardigan, August, and Betty. These three songs, tell a story of a love triangle between 3 teenagers their names are Betty, James, and Augustine. When Taylor wrote folklore she said pretty soon these images in my head grew faces or names and became characters. I found myself not only writing my own stories, but also writing about or from the perspective of people, I’ve never met, people I’ve known, or people like wish I hadn’t.
To me, “when you are young they assume you know nothing” is aimed more at James thinking Betty doesn’t know he’s cheating on her (“but I knew everything when I was young”) Also the line “You put me on and said I was your favourite” sounds loving but to “put someone on” means to string them along or lie to them
4:45 are you guys in Mexico? Because i just got flashbacks while hearing "se compran colchones, tambores, refrigeradores, estufas, lavadoras, microondas, o algo de fierro viejo que vendan"
You should search for the original lyrics to this song (cardigan voice memo), the ending is so heartbreaking to me .... I knew I'd curse you for the longest time I knew I'd wish you would've changed your mind I knew you'd miss me once the moment died I knew to love would be to lose my mind
The vibe I get is that it is reflective... a cautionary tale. The innocence of life is stripped when reality enters the scene. You can choose to be hopeful or hopeless to the challenges of your life. The may be young- but still have wisdom - depending on their character and of those around them. Whether truth or fiction was used in the story... or a blend - the emotions evoked change as the characters are used to paint the picture. Some personally relate to different points of the song- others try to imagine new characters. But there are still some fans that try to tie it to people in her life.- which effect the context of the message conveyed. Overall, things happen for a reason- but you have a choice on your response.
I think it's so cool how many ways this song and each individual line can be interpreted. I always thought that comparing herself to an old cardigan was that she'd been used and heartbroken by a lot of people and she thought that (in this case James) was the next one but she believed he was really genuine and there to stay.
Cardigan, august, Bettie is a trilogy of fiction by TS not about her life. There’s also speculation that mirror ball and champagne problems also are part of the same plot but there is no TS confirmation. So we are waiting for a new video covering the different songs (each song is from a different character perspective)
New Swiftie here. 'Friend to all', maybe is a 'pathological people pleaser?" 🤷🏻♀🤷🏻♀ 'Chase 2 girls, lose the one', "When you are young they assume you know nothing'. I feel like she is saying she can read all the signs of the relationship and can forecast a bit, that she knows what's going on in August, and that James is young and foolish, but he will come back to her. And in Betty he did. And yeah, she has several songs that make me cry from the sheer joy and beauty. This is one. 'Put narcotics into all of my songs'. 😻😻
Cardigan' is for those people who found a lover who made them feel that they were the most beautiful thing they had ever seen that made them feel special. With those who lowered their guard and showed their scars letting them draw stars on them. But in the end they ended up letting them bleed with new wounds.
Hi, from Argentina! All songs in Folklore are from fictional characters created by Taylor, and not about her personal life. Cardigan is part of the love triangle, so to get the whole story: The song 'Cardigan' is from Betty's perspective dedicated to his bf James The song 'August' is from the point of view of James' lover, Augustine dedicated to James and the song 'Betty' is from James perspective dedicated to Betty.
"A friend to all is a friend to none" reminds me of the mutual friend, Inez, in the song "betty" who tells Betty about James & Augustine's summer love affair.
1:37 The thing is that “nothing” and “everything” are both of the extremes. You’re not clueless when you’re young but you also don’t know everything 🤷🏻♂️
As people have said, this song isn't about her life. It's a fictional story about a love triangle. Also, Taylor's now ex who she was with at the time, Joe Alwyn, is pretty damn famous...
In order to truly understand the song/lyrics of this song, you should listen to “August,” and “Betty” because they’re all part of a teenage “love triangle” Taylor wrote for “folklore” album. Each song is a perspective from each individual.
It's all about Betty, James, & August in the songs Betty & August. Cardigan is Betty's perspective, Betty is James' perspective, & August is from the other female love interest perspective. Some say her name is Augustine. 😘
This is fiction. You have to listen to Betty and August to understand. This is Betty's POV. In Betty, it's James' POV. In August it's the girl he cheated on Betty with POV. So the line about two girls and losing the one refers to her boyfriend, James, cheating.
You have to listen to August and Betty too to understand the whole story. Cardigan is Betty's perspective years later. Talking about how her boyfriend had a summer fling. August is the other girl's perspective, Taylor called her Augusta or Augustine. She truly liked James, but he didn't like her back. Betty is James' perspective right after leaving Augustine and trying to win Betty back.
In the chorus there is a bit of double speak too. “You put me on,” isn’t just talking about trying on a sweater. “Put me on” as in kidding, making a joke, pulling my leg… ❤
Wow, I have the exact opposite reaction to the cardigan line. To me it sounds like the love interest always leaves her behind and goes into something new and exciting and then she is always there, waiting, because she knows in the end, he always comes back to her. She is putting her worth down in order to always be there for a person. You put me on and said I was your favorite, as someone pointed out, has a double meaning and put me on also means you are liying to someone. So to me, she just embraces his lies, because if she truly was his favorite he wouldn't hurt her like that, just to be with him and ignores her pain and grief. Very interesting to have two diferent perspectives on one line. :D
I love watching you learn in real time. Love you two doing this together. Thank you for the vulnerable but knowledgable (from your respective expertises) commentary. Think Harry Styles in my book.
It's a love triangle! The song Betty from James perspective, the song August from Agustine perspective and Cardigan from Betty perspective, listen to all of them so can you understand. (No hablo ingles pero intente explicarme jaja)
TLDR on the verse explanation, Folklore has a 3 way fictional love triangle, betty, james inez. The song betty( james perspective when he fucked up and cheated on her in the summer with inez and now wants her back) Cardigan (betty perspective). August (inez perspective). The second verse says litterly that he chased 2 girs (betty and inez) and lost the one who he really loved (betty). You can listen to the other songs to get a better idea of the story. '😊😊
To me the line "when you are young they assume you know nothing" invokes that frustration of being told "you'll understand when you're older" when actually you know now. Like in the case of this song, people may say young love isn't real love, but sometimes it is. Sometimes even young people with less life experience find something real. That's just my opinion tho 💞 Also yes, this song is part of a trilogy between Cardigan, Betty, and August. I hope y'all can react to the whole storyline one day! 💞
So funny how you glossed over so much via a few casual listens, you’re just like…oooooh I love this love song 😍 🎶 I’m so sorry you were devastated upon reading the lyrics. Danny, excellent work counseling her through the song. P.S. the narrator of the song deserves better than dude callin her a damn. sweater.
This song is about a fictional love triangle relationship. I suggest listening to betty, which is written in the moment and is the frame of reference for both this song, cardigan, and the 3rd song in the trangle, august. Cardigan is written from betty's perspective. Time has passed and she's reflecting on this tumultuous relationship. betty is written from the male perspective, james and august is written from the perspective of the other girl, coined "Augustine".
Yes this is about one person- hard core swifties know who-with one reference to another person(triangle) and her dad did leave (parents divorced). It is a love song - you are right
This is one of a trilogy of songs telling a fictional story of a young girl let down by her love cheating on her, but coming back and asking asking for forgiveness. August is from the other girls prospective (summer fling) and Betty (the name of the Cardigan girl) is from the boys POV as he builds up to asking for forgiveness. You need to link them together.
Well now we need a teenage love triangle reaction video with “Cardigan”, “Betty”, and “August” all together now that all the comments have pointed out that “Cardigan” is part of the fictional teenage love triangle triad! P.S., the editing is delightful as always. I love how it adds a third reaction POV to the video. He gets us 😂
A big thing you need to know about Cardigan is that in this album she's not making songs just about her life but she's also telling stories that have nothing to do with her Cardigan is a story that is part of a trilogy or love triangle. Cardigan is the version or view point told of the girl (her name is Betty) who was cheated on. Betty is from the point of view of the boy (Called James) who cheated on Betty. August is about a girl named Augustine (I believe, conflicting reports) who was the other girl. But the most interesting part of the love triangle is finding out who was in the wrong in this story. People want to blame the cheater and mistress but some just want to blame the cheater. Stating that the other women was really in love with James Fun fact about this trilogy, all the names are the kids from Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds. Their kids call her Aunt Taylor and are really close friends with the couple.
You should listen to and watch her music video for the song willow. The video has ties to cardigan and I think it's just so cool. Also you should do the cardigan, betty, august trilogy of her folklore album. It will explain the story of the cardigan. Love these videos!
Many have said the trilogy.... but I personally think. Betty is set right after the incident.... august.... also right after the incident. Cardigan I think is set years after everything. Like Danny said.... age gives you a different perspective. I think Betty is looking back on her and James' journey and that is Cardigan.
See I see the line 'You put me on, and said I was your favorite' totally DIFFERENT... To me the words 'put me on' sounds like brittish slang, 'You puttin' me on' which basically means 'your lying to me'. So to me it sounds like if you forgot about me and I was getting dusty underneath your bed and one day you took me out and put me on- how can you say Im your favorite sweater? If I was your favorite you would wear me everyday. You can SAY and TELL me a ton of things, but if the ACTION is that you only take me out when its convenient for you... then your not treating me like im your favorite anything. To me the song is more about how in certain she relationships, she knows she should be treated better but this is the love she thinks she deserves- even when its not. I love this song, but I think its less about a long lasting love. 'You drew stars around my scars, and now im bleeding' ??? That does not sound positive to me. I think it means you (as in the boy) saw my scars and wounds from former loves, and traced around them. As in he went around the edges of my wounds and followed in a similar or almost the same pattern and opened my scars so now she's hurt again. I definitely believe this song is more about how a certain person in her life hurt her, so now she accepts love that is less than she deserves. Again- to me- 'to kiss in cars in downtown bars was all we needed' to me that sounds more like the bare minimum effort was enough for her to convince herself that that was love, because of all the terrible hurts shes had in the past. I think this is more of a sad song- even though I love it thoroughly!!!
Also to me- 'tried to change the ending, Peter losing Wendy' is great! Peter didnt LOSE Wendy, he left her- and when he finally came back when it was convenient for him, Wendy had moved on. So he did not lose her, he made a decision and those were the consequences of his actions. Again a man who doesnt want to take accountability for HIS actions. SO to me that sounds like someone is trying to say I didnt leave you, I lost you (as in excuses excuses) I am so passionate about this song, and have a million other things to say about this individual song alone. I could go on forever lol This song to me sounds so personal, and even if it is about fictional characters- I think Taylor actually put a lot more personal stuff into this song
the section of the song you said you don't get, "a friedn to all is a friend to none, chase two girls lose the one, when they are young they assume you know nothing"- to me, that means, he was telling her oh we're just friends, there is nothing else going on, and because she's young he assumes she's naive and believes him, but she's saying, but I knew YOU, playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends- maybe the hide and seek is a bit of her suspecting he was running around, not so naive and she knew more than he thought she did.
Cardigan is a trilogy of songs about a made-up love triangle. This is the perspective of the "girlfriend" if you will. Betty is the song from the guys perspective and August is from the "side chicks" perspective. You should listen to all of them together. Great job guys 🤗
I've seen your husband's videos on RUclips 'my boss listens to _____' and then a few weeks ago I watched the video of you guys listening to the 10 minute version of all too well Taylor's version and I was like "I KNOW I've seen him somewhere before" but couldn't remember where 😂
AUDREY: It’s a FICTIONAL trilogy on this album. Each song is from a different persons perspective. *Betty - the man’s perspective as a young man (James) *August - the “summer” fling young woman who sleeps with James (who already has a girlfriend, Betty) but she wants to believe it’s real love *Cardigan - Betty’s perspective is from an adult and looking back on this heartbreak from when she was young with James and when he cheated on her. She’s a genius! Who else would have a trilogy on the album?? She was in love but he was only 17, young and dumb.

It's all about Betty, James, & August in the songs Betty & August. Cardigan is Betty's perspective, Betty is James' perspective, & August is from the other female love interest perspective. Some say her name is Augustine. 😘
U need to react for whole trilogy .😍😍 i would love to see thwt
Taylor is talented here and have not listened to this song before
This is fiction.
Lmao the editing is fire. 🤣
In the chorus there is a bit of double speak too. “You put me on,” isn’t just talking about trying on a sweater. “Put me on” as in kidding, making a joke, pulling my leg… ❤
You should hear Betty and august too in the same session and you will understand and figure every line in this song
its so adorable seeing u guys together, ive been watching you both separately not knowing you're married to each other 😂💖
Your editor has me cackling 🤣 ruthless
I would love for you to react to "no body no crimen" from they evermore album, I think you guys would have so mucho fun with those lyrics 🤭
Editing work 10/10
Well, you succeeded David 😵💫 10:06 🫠😂
I was gonna say, did nobody else catch that??!?! Hello???
It's a Fictional Love trilogy! Not about her
I love watching you learn in real time. Love you two doing this together. Thank you for the vulnerable but knowledgable (from your respective expertises) commentary. Think Harry Styles in my book.
also, p.s. her father did not leave her literally but her parents divorced. The loss still happened.
"A friend to all is a friend to none. Choose two girls, lose the one," is refering to divided loyalties.
It's a love triangle! The song Betty from James perspective, the song August from Agustine perspective and Cardigan from Betty perspective, listen to all of them so can you understand.
(No hablo ingles pero intente explicarme jaja)
The High Line is an park built on a defunct elevated train track in NYC.
BTW…the Highline is an elevated park in Manhattan
Chase two girls lose THE ONE. Like not just another girl but the right girl is how I interpret that line. 5:32
The Song is Part of a trilogia. You should listen to all three to understand all the lirics. There is August and Betty to
TLDR on the verse explanation,
Folklore has a 3 way fictional love triangle, betty, james inez.
The song betty( james perspective when he fucked up and cheated on her in the summer with inez and now wants her back)
Cardigan (betty perspective).
That's just my opinion tho 💞
Also yes, this song is part of a trilogy between Cardigan, Betty, and August. I hope y'all can react to the whole storyline one day! 💞
this song is by her own accord fictional lol its not about joe alwyn
All the characters in the trilogy Taylor created are high school aged,Betty is actually the name of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds daughter.
watch folklore the long pond studio sessions! that way you'll actually understand your favorite songs!
YOU GUYS ARE JUST SO CUTE TOGETHER please adopt me
Audreeeeyyyyy 8:17 HAHAHAHAHA OK THIS IS SO FUNNY THOUGH.
So funny how you glossed over so much via a few casual listens, you’re just like…oooooh I love this love song 😍 🎶
I’m so sorry you were devastated upon reading the lyrics.
Danny, excellent work counseling her through the song.
P.S. the narrator of the song deserves better than dude callin her a damn. sweater.
Audrey needs to rewatch the long pond sessions 😂
“He wasn’t famous”
Joe’s acting career:🧍🏼
This song is about a fictional love triangle relationship. I suggest listening to betty, which is written in the moment and is the frame of reference for both this song, cardigan, and the 3rd song in the trangle, august. Cardigan is written from betty's perspective. Time has passed and she's reflecting on this tumultuous relationship. betty is written from the male perspective, james and august is written from the perspective of the other girl, coined "Augustine".
Yes this is about one person- hard core swifties know who-with one reference to another person(triangle) and her dad did leave (parents divorced). It is a love song - you are right
Audrey have you heard the recent Taylor news from last night it’s VERY EXCITING!!
He gets us 😂
A big thing you need to know about Cardigan is that in this album she's not making songs just about her life but she's also telling stories that have nothing to do with her
Cardigan is a story that is part of a trilogy or love triangle.
Stating that the other women was really in love with James
Fun fact about this trilogy, all the names are the kids from Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds.
Hi queen !! It's friday is the 1989 reaction coming soon? Eras tour friday??
esta cancion siempre me hace llorar
The first time I saw a video with the 2 of you, I was so shocked and that's when I learnt y'all were a couple...
This is such a cute video. ❤
the section of the song you said you don't get, "a friedn to all is a friend to none, chase two girls lose the one, when they are young they assume you know nothing"- to me, that means, he was telling her oh we're just friends, there is nothing else going on, and because she's young he assumes she's naive and believes him, but she's saying, but I knew YOU, playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends- maybe the hide and seek is a bit of her suspecting he was running around, not so naive and she knew more than he thought she did.
You two are so fun and cute
Cardigan is a trilogy of songs about a made-up love triangle. This is the perspective of the "girlfriend" if you will. Betty is the song from the guys perspective and August is from the "side chicks" perspective.
You should listen to all of them together. Great job guys 🤗
I've seen your husband's videos on RUclips 'my boss listens to _____' and then a few weeks ago I watched the video of you guys listening to the 10 minute version of all too well Taylor's version and I was like "I KNOW I've seen him somewhere before" but couldn't remember where 😂
Folklore is her imagination. You have to listen to Betty, Augustine and then cardigan and you will get it.
I cant wait
All to well is about Jake Gylenhall
AUDREY: It’s a FICTIONAL trilogy on this album. Each song is from a different persons perspective.
*Betty - the man’s perspective as a young man (James)
*August - the “summer” fling young woman who sleeps with James (who already has a girlfriend, Betty) but she wants to believe it’s real love
*Cardigan - Betty’s perspective is from an adult and looking back on this heartbreak from when she was young with James and when he cheated on her.
She’s a genius! Who else would have a trilogy on the album?? She was in love but he was only 17, young and dumb.
