I'm so hyped for denis' take on the world of blade runner, I just finished incendies and his track record is perfect. Not one bad film. For anyone interested I'm going to be making a video essay on both films soon!
I found Incendies because it is in IMDB's top 250 highest rated films of all time. I imagine a lot of people get it from there and spread it around through word of mouth.
I kinda want a whole anime series of it. The world of Blade Runner is very underused, theres so many directions and brilliant plots that could be mined from it.
I've always inferred that replicants have some kind of spirit animal , I mean the snake the dove the owl THE UNICORN and for the one girl replicant who doesn't perhaps she has not developed her own emotions yet she's is seen almost short circuiting when "dying" leading us to think of a technical problem we so often see in our computers or perhaps she used Sebastian as her animal
My brother gave me such a hard time when I first told him (back in the 1980’s) that B R was my favourite Sci Fi movie. Now he loves it, and he can’t, “remember,” ever not liking it. But his creased brow and sarcasm about B R being dull and boring are fixed in my memory. Sometimes I wonder if we just delete what is not in the cultural, “norm,” from our memories, and get programmed into following the mainstream, through our, “interlinked,” web services? Perhaps we’re the servants?
@@milopbrown3427 : Certainly deliberately symbolic, as animals representing characters. You just took it to the next level. Who knows? You might be onto what the writers intended? ✌️
I seriously wish you guys would do an analysis of "Do androids dream of electric sheep". There is so much more to talk about philosophically in my opinion. Unfortunately nobody actually cares about Philip K Dick's stories that gave us all these movies. #justiceforpkd
Mister Moar Onn I agree PKD is one of my favorite authors, and so many of his works have been adapted in one way or another but no one talks about him.
yeah DADOES is so dark and unsettling, and has all this crazy stuff about religion and the social hierarchy caused by having people with varying degrees of genetic damage from radiation. Would definitely make for an awesome analysis video.
well the writers, artists, directors and the whole line of people working on these adaptations must certainly know about him and love his work otherwise it would not be adapted so much. who cares about public recognition when you can yourself work on these kind of projects ? trust me, in the entertainment industry, eeeeeeveryone knows about pk dick
an in depth review of how all of Phillip K. Dick's 85(ish) short stories are related to each other would be interesting albeit admittedly a very daunting and complicated task but at the same time a labor of love that only a true geek would even attempt. possibly a series of interrelated themes and concepts that appeared in most of his stories would be easier and do each story justice.
I think you overlooked the more important philosophy of Blade Runner...well, more along the lines of psychology of Blade Runner. Deckard isn’t a replica (he really is human), but it’s easy to understand how and why people came up with that theory. You see, he behaves more like a machine than machines do. He’s given the task of hunting down the replicas, and he does it; without question. His methods even seem quite callous at times. Throughout the film we find ourselves empathizing more with the replicas than with Deckard. The interesting thing about Roy is that he goes through a process of de-evolution. He’s a machine in the pursuit of a human goal, but by the end of the movie his behavior is more like that of a wild animal.
My brother gave me such a hard time when I first told him (back in the 1980’s) that B R was my favourite Sci Fi movie. Now he loves it, and he can’t, “remember,” ever not liking it. Oh shit, I was just watching 2022; end credits were rolling when this notification dropped. Check that shit out, it's incredible. (And it's free on RUclips; you don't have to use CrunchyRoll. There are also two other Bladerunner shorts, all on YT; "2036: Nexus Dawn" and "2048: Nowhere to Run", all on WB's YT channel)
Oz Khan thanks for the tip, I will check it out. But remember that a lot of great anime and manga got their distopian style from Blade Runner (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop). I think it's a perfect match.
I've read comments you people wouldn't believe. Political shitposts getting flamed in the comments of nature documentaries. I watched SJW memes glitter in the dark near GamerGate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to post.
Deckard IS a replicant. Its the only thing that explains his lack of remorse for his actions, its why he ultimately did the same thing and defied his own programming as a replicant killer and saved rachel. Durrr, plus the unicorn in his dreams is pretty loud.
Loving theese quick take videos, was kind of anxious to see if the quality would remain the same in the beginning. I keep coming back for more, thanks for being my favorite channel, im continually blown away at the content and the interpretations!
+Pine Straker no he's right about that blade runner reference. besides not much of us knew about the new installment of it. I didn't so his comment is very well valid
wow thanks for this quick take, i found the part on photos and memory particularly interesting - having just seen 2049 i instantly thought of the scene when one of the characters mentions how their mother still cries over lost baby photos - seemed like a throwaway comment at the time, but now holds more thematic significance.
Some of this Philosophy, that you are your memories, is refuted by studies. Alzheimer's patients and people with severe amnesia, have been reported as having, by their friends and relatives, the same personalities they had as before. Somethings may change like their learned morality, but for the most part, people with memory loss remain themselves.
Interesting, but only seems to highlight the difference between the external experience of someone (not changing with Alzheimer's) and the internal lived experience (could I really be myself if someone edited, deleted or created new memories). It seems hard to create a scientifically rigorous experiment to prove/disprove the internal experience of self. Perhaps we will know more once we start creating artificial intelligences but media like Blade Runner seems to show us that even if we had the means, we would still be debating the philosophy of self.
It seems most true that I was myself more before my memories were formed. Still the mental pictures of my past are but fades impressions of who I was. I was me before my memories & I will be me when they are gone. Life is like a dream you try to recall upon waking. Some is kept, some lost, & some confabulation. Still this is the context of how a being that is created by human hands claims to be just as genuine as it's maker. So unless your a fake, it should not matter.
The interesting thing is the philosophy of "Do Androids Dream..." that hypothesized that even the Nexus 6 had terrible E.Q. and lacked empathy, a major programming disadvantage. Phillip K. Dick must've thought A.I. would never master empathy.
Another way of interpreting the eye, doll, and dove motifs is that they symbolize the Mind, Physical Body/Shell, and Spirit/Soul respectively. The eye is an obvious window for our perception, the doll itself without a mind is just a physical body or shell, and the timing of the dove being released upon death along with how symbolic their being very bright, pure white is evocative of soul departing and ascending to the heavens.
Going to the URL you noted, there wasn't an option to watch 2022 for free. There was only an option to sign up for a free 30 day trial. At 7:24 it sounded like you were saying that you could watch 2022 with ads for free at the URL OR sign up for a free 30 day trial. But the first option doesn't appear to exist.
I simply love the way you sistematically analyze movies, anime, etc. When I watch your videos, I realize that I need to study a little bit harder so that I can analyze all the content and media I consume as well. Greetings.
I think the dove represents the replicant afterlife. The girl replicant asks the guy replicant in the car "If we die, do we go to heaven?". And right before she dies, a dove flies over, representing at least something supernatural that's attributed only to replicants. Same thing with Roy and right before he dies in the first bladerunner.
Okay so this anime confirms that Deckard is a replicant. Here is how; notice how at the start it says that Nexus 8 has a natural lifespan, as opposed to Nexus 6's 4 years? Based on some of the Nexus 8's profiles in these Anime, they were active in 2019/2022. This means that Deckard was probably one of the first prototypes of Nexus 8. That is why he is still "alive" in 2049. Also, because of demolition of the datacenter and the EMP, there is no way of telling who the replicants are or their whereabout, hence Deckard says in the new trailer "how did you find me?".
Cool video... and you used the same music as me in my Blade Runner video (which concerns the paradox in Physics about what happens when tears and rain mix).
I always thought the dove is a symbol for something like a soul, indicating that the replicants have indeed a consciousness like humans. When Batty dies, the dove flies away like the soul would leave the body.
Okay, I have mentioned a Cowboy BeBop episode on the philosophy of the show many a time, I really can't push it enough seeing it is such a beautiful shows with such rich lessons to be learnt.
can you do another blade runner breakdown or do one contrasting it with Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex? keep up the great work, love the podcast
Rachel has a Nexus-7 serial number as confirmed in 2049. And if Deckard is replicant, and that's a big IF, it's likely he'd be an N-7 too. Greetings from the future!
Totally agree with the idea of the dove as a rep of freedom. So many different forms of freedom. I like best the idea of the freedom from the burden of the pursuit of purpose. That is what in death I am most looking forward to.
Thank you CobraD1! I already found this out but I need to thank you for doing so anyway, don't be discouraged for me being a jackass to not respond to a similar comment by someone else in the future! Happy holidays.
@wisecrack I'm not sure how much philosophy you'll find, but you should consider checking out Sweeney Todd. I'd say it's a karmic tale where even people who do evil things for "justice" are punished for their crimes (save for Toby who in the original play went mad from revelation), and shows just how far revenge can push a person.
You really need to watch them both, watch the first blade runner the final cut not the other versions and trust me the more you'll think about it and rewatch it thr more you'll love it the second one is also amazing but very slow so if don't expect huge a action scenes etc, and the background music is called "i can't remember i can't recall"
Everything related to Blade Runner makes me extremely pumped for Cyberpunk 2077 that will come in a few years. Everything related to this theme, a futuristic society is so GOOD! Very rich, and very full of space to imagine and create stories. The hype is huge for the movie soon, and for the game that CDPR will give us. What a time to be alive!
I think Deckard is definitely a Replicant, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he was an entire model line of Replicants designed to hunt other Replicants and when one gets to old they just replace it with a newer model.
I have a question, why are robot hunting bounty hunters called blade runners? How do the words blade and runner correlate to seeking and destroying robots?
I find that to be an interesting interpretation of the theme. What makes us human and so on. I just remember when I watched Blade Runner I was deeply disturbed by the likeness of the replicants. Yes I know human actors are playing them but the way they fought, talk , and bleed was critical to the film. The fact on how replicants are made are also important I think as well. I don't find Data from Star Trek upsetting nor do I fine the human Android in Aliens to be upsetting either. There where clear differences and lines that I felt in the first place should have never been crossed in the beginning in this world that where and essentially being crossed.
Thanks for this vid - first time I had a respirotary arrest -To be honest I thought I was fainting - breathing was getting shallow so with the breath I had left -I said good bye to my mom told here I loved her ! X - And the last things to go through my mind was my 3 kiddies Jen, Leah & Lew - the girl I should have married Paulla & The last thing before the darkness was Rutger Hauer sat cross legged in the rain givin his teardrops in the rain speech before he lets go of the dove (Ridley Scotts symbol of his spirit goiing to the heavens because he did'nt own one I suppose) - An that was it, the last thing I thought of before I fainted - I did not realise the shape I was in untill I woke up 23 hours later - All tubed up & Plumbed in to a life support machine ??? All family was there ! - And I had to communicate through Pen & Paper ! So there it is - technically the last thought I had was of this amazing piece on Bladerunner - Ad libbed by Rutger Hauer himself as th cameras were rolling ! Thanks for sharing your vid ! All the best !
*Who is Prospero and who is Caliban in Blade Runner?* Distinct people from dolls by their experience and define their worth and rights thru this distinction, is actually an old philosophy of superiority. And you can find it in "The Storm" from Shakespeare.
I think the short kinda confirmed Deckard is a Replicant. But well Ridley Scott himself did years ago, dont know why people still doubt it was pretty clear.
just a random thought, but what about our pasts rather than being a series of images, what if they are simply a narrative by which we explain our current selves?
Hey wisecrack, mind doing a video on the philosophy of Danganronpa. I think it has a few interesting things to say about the balance between hope and despair.
Tears in rain scene is one of the most powerful and poetic scenes ever
AND... It was kinda improvised in the spot. Not literally, it was something the actor wanted to do. So they were like: ehhh fuck it, do it.
That is incorrect.
I'm so hyped for denis' take on the world of blade runner, I just finished incendies and his track record is perfect. Not one bad film. For anyone interested I'm going to be making a video essay on both films soon!

How did you find incendies?
I found Incendies because it is in IMDB's top 250 highest rated films of all time. I imagine a lot of people get it from there and spread it around through word of mouth.
The Cinematography in this short was amazing honestly. So trippy
I kinda want a whole anime series of it. The world of Blade Runner is very underused, theres so many directions and brilliant plots that could be mined from it.
The dove represents Roy's soul.
That is my thought as well.

Hey Wisecrack, what music plays during the background of this video? It's amazing
As if the original wasn't thought provoking enough! Thanks Wisecrack!
thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been waiting for this!
You should do a video about Made In Abyss. Sounds right up your ally. Made In Abyss was one of the most popular Anime of Summer 2017.
Max Mustermann that's what I thought too, like it symbolised the after life. Even the way his head is hung in that scene. It almost seems religious.
Thank you guys for sharing this
I've never been so hyped for an animated short in my life.
I'm not sure that replicants are automatons. How do you get that they are preprogrammed?
Super glad wisecrack made this video
Yes, another Quick Take! I love the fact that Wisecrack also covers anime! Also, Shinichiro Watanabe is an OG.
what's the music in the video?
Why is there a skip from Nexus-6 replicants to Nexus-8? What happened to Nexus-7 replicants, if there are any?
Maybe deckard and rachael is the N-7.
Why is there a skip from Windows 8 to Windows 10, XBOX 360 to XBOX One, iPhone 8 to iPhone X?
iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 7, 8... I guess Apple's copying Blade Runner as well
Rachel has a Nexus-7 serial number as confirmed in 2049. And if Deckard is replicant, and that's a big IF, it's likely he'd be an N-7 too. Greetings from the future!
Can you guys please make a list on your favorite philosophers to begin reading ourselves?
What is the name of background musci? Sound dope
That moment when you thought the video was a break down of a Rick and Morty reference.
Totally agree with the idea of the dove as a rep of freedom. So many different forms of freedom. I like best the idea of the freedom from the burden of the pursuit of purpose. That is what in death I am most looking forward to.
What is the name of the music playing in the background?
So anyone have any idea what the background song in this video is called?
its called: "I can't remmber I can't recall" ruclips.net/video/ik-IsMHOBSQ/видео.html
Thank you CobraD1! I already found this out but I need to thank you for doing so anyway, don't be discouraged for me being a jackass to not respond to a similar comment by someone else in the future! Happy holidays.
Watched it, totally worth it. Thanks for the freebee.
Thanks, #Wisecrack! Watched the trailer, it's awesome!
What the name of the music playing on background ?
gotta love these ads disguised as wisecrack videos
just a question can you do a philosophy episode on Battle Angel Alita before the live action movie comes out as the manga is chock full of philosophy.
Nice video guys!

What song is playing in the background through out the video
thank you!! simply amazing
Is the music they used in the video from Blade Runner?
I wanna see blade runner, I've never seen any of them. :(
What is the music that plays in the background?

what is the music theme in the background throughout the video please let me know @wisecrack
I'm pretty sure Ridley Scott came out and said Deckard was a replicant. It was some interview just after the Blade Runner sequel was announced.

Nice video!=) Since we have the Philosophy of Dragon Ball and Death Note, I'd like to request a video on Philosophy of Naruto if possible.
I have a question, why are robot hunting bounty hunters called blade runners? How do the words blade and runner correlate to seeking and destroying robots?
You should do one about the philosophy of aggressively inserting neoliberal actions into videos while offering a critique at the same time.
RIP to the editors that have probably been fired due to the new format of these episodes.
Great video! but I miss your Rick and Morty one's
You guys should do the philosophy of the unusual suspects
Just watched Barton Fink for the first time the other day, can you guys do a Philosophy of Barton Fink?
He removed his right eye in the end. I think it symbolizes freedom.
I find that to be an interesting interpretation of the theme. What makes us human and so on. I just remember when I watched Blade Runner I was deeply disturbed by the likeness of the replicants.

*Who is Prospero and who is Caliban in Blade Runner?*
Distinct people from dolls by their experience and define their worth and rights thru this distinction, is actually an old philosophy of superiority. And you can find it in "The Storm" from Shakespeare.
*PS:* Is that just my impression or is the light blue doll with the red arrow in the thumbnail, a reference to the Alt-Right Party AfD 😂
I believe in Villeneuve I think it's gonna be awesome !!!
"If only you could see what I've seen with your eyes"
Do The orville. It has some pretty interesting themes so far.
Why haven't I heard about this? Shinichiro Watanabe is a legendary anime director.

I want a copy of the BR2049 script. You'd think even a transcript would be floating around online by now, but I can't find one.

I think the short kinda confirmed Deckard is a Replicant. But well Ridley Scott himself did years ago, dont know why people still doubt it was pretty clear.
good shit man, good shit
just a random thought, but what about our pasts rather than being a series of images, what if they are simply a narrative by which we explain our current selves?
Hey wisecrack, mind doing a video on the philosophy of Danganronpa. I think it has a few interesting things to say about the balance between hope and despair.
