So I'm sittin' in the meadow at the 'Strawberry Music Festival' up in Yosemite California several years back waiting for the first group to kick off the four day event. They introduce the first group and out walks two 13 years olds, a 14 year old and Dad on stand up bass. I think to myself..."oh this should be cute". They stole the show! They were just as accomplished then as they are now. One of the most defining music moments of my life.

How on earth can (at the time of writing) 20 people dislike this? Even if you don't like the genre, this must be one of the top five of all time examples of brilliant, energetic and highly skilled playing, dazzling solos and musicians with great passion and joy on stage. And I'm a fairly accomplished fiddle player myself, I know real talent and skill when I see/hear it.

Chris Thile should get both the best mandolin and best drummer award.

Those solos are so sick, they're demented, particularly the guitar and mandolin ones! I love the way they go so far from clichés, and even tonality, before working their way back to solid ground, as it were. The whole band is amazing.

Holy f that was tight. Gotta hand it to these guys. I'm a metalhead drummer, cookie monster screaming dude who blasts the most unholy, brutally heavy metal music 24/7. Total black skinny jeans, oversized tank top with branch font logos, long messy hair, Mitch Lucker wannabe, "it's not just a phase mom" type of guy. But man, when I watch this video it's goosebumps. My old car's stereo jammed shut with the Punch Brothers' Phosphoresent Blues CD in and I was legitimately bummed that I couldn't get it out. In this 2020s era of country music being cool again cause of the Texas country guys like Morgan Wallen and Tyler Childers, I get some clout for being a fiddle player haha. But bluegrass is still where it's really at. Metal, bluegrass, and swing jazz are genres that allow wild, improvised, super energetic music. They're the most "anything goes" types of music, and I've got some of the best memories playing all 3. I wish there was a bluegrass equivalent to the moshpit for me to let out the adrenaline I get from it haha. But yeah, Chris Thile, Nickle Creek, Punch Brothers, I'm With Her, and all the other Flecktones-esque bluegrass is lowkey the shit. It's a whole underground scene waiting for the young generation to rediscover it.

I guess you could call it Bluegrass plus. It starts and ends like a Bluegrass song, but goes to different places in the middle. When musicians experiment, they often don't really pull it off - they bite off more than they can chew. But this piece was tight. They had it under control and it was great fun.
