    I watched Kirby play A ton his draft year in Sask. While he was never really that fast, flashy game-breaker you’d typically expect from a top 3 prospect, he had poise & NHL calibre awareness. Had he been taken later by a team who was patient enough to let him develop his pro game and fill out his 6’3” frame, he’d have never been considers a bust.

    Dach and Slaf are going to have stellar careers (if they keep healthy). Two big guys with speed and skills, they are necessary to the Habs future. They may not be generational but looking at what Dach is doing and Slaf's potential to do the same, I get the feeling we will be on board for great things to come. Slaf is 18… guys, 18! He's fresh out of high school for God's sake. We got to be patient. Some pretty nice talent is coming such as Hudson, Mailloux, Roy, Kidney, Farrel, etc Having a Connor McDavid is nice but having a solid defence and real talent spread out over all the trios is to me more efficient. The other team can never lower their gard and at some point during the game they make a mistake, then a penalty, and then things start to go haywire.

    I don't know if I would by hyping Dach up quite this much. So far, he seems like a good supporting piece, but not someone you consider as part of the core. That's not really the type of player a team is going to feel regret for trading. Using the Blackhawks for another example: I don't think Dach is on the verge of being what Patrick Sharp was for them via the Philly trade way back.
    32 points at this point of the season is nice, but its not "omg" territory by a long shot yet. It does seem like his underlying numbers are decent though.

    • @0725038
      @0725038 Год назад

      You have to look at more than the points. The habs are a mess this season. There's no stability because there's a lack of talent, passion or players due to injuries. Dach is one of the few that keeps getting better. He was alright at the begining of the season, coming back from a long time injury, but he's now playing at a 50 points pace at 22 years old on a bottom team. It's excellent. You can see his confidence in his plays. He even got into a fight. The kid is growing much faster than anyone anticipated. Also, Sharp is a winger that started producing at 25 by playing with Kane and Toews. Dach plays center with Dadonov and Hoffman, just a small difference.

    • @IRanOutOfPhrases
      @IRanOutOfPhrases Год назад

      @@0725038 Unknowingly, you just opened a whole can of worms with me regarding Sharp, lol. As great as he was on the wing, he was misused in Chicago quite a bit and was a big reason I couldn't stand Quenneville after a while (although there are much more significant reasons I despise that enabler now). In 2009-10, Sharp was primarily viewed as a center. You can verify this via Hockeyviz. He did play LW on occasion, but when it came down to it, he was the second line center behind Toews. Making sure I wasn't making it up, I spot checked a few games in the Final against Philly, and yeah, he was a center. So he wasn't necessarily playing exclusive with Kane & Toews. (Although yes, he did see quite a bit with Kane) So it drove me nuts for the rest of his career when Quenneville never played him at center ever again after 2010. The 2011 & 2012 seasons, the Hawks were hurting really badly at the #2C spot. In 2011 they tried to pigeon hole Bolland there (which then just leaves a giant hole on the checking line.) Frolik & Kopecky were also tried there. It was a train wreck that was completely avoidable because they already had a proven, Cup Winning Second Line Center on the team, and the coach refused to use him there. In 2012, I kid you not, Quenneville tried putting Kane in at center to make up for the total lack of a second line center, despite still have a well-proven Patrick Sharp on the team. They also tried that year: Kruger, Shaw & Bolland (again.) Those two years were pretty dismal as a result.
      Anyway, yeah, I don't mean to diminish Dach's value solely based on his points. But if the conversation is about if Chicago is going to 'regret' this trade, points is the thing that really makes a team wince at its bad decisions. Could Dach end up really taking off his career and being a sure-fire 2C? Sure. I just think its way too early to say this is a trade Chicago would most definitely want back.
      Oh, and one last note on Sharp, his 2006-07 totals don't look that impressive: 20 goals, 15 assists. But when Sharp first came to CHI from Philly, he wasn't thought of as much of a player (lacked the first round pick pedigree), spending much of his time on the bottom two lines. But by the end of the season, he worked his way up the line-up and put in 13 goals in the final 27 games of the year (near 40 goal pace) without Kane or Toews. That streak is what helped get him into position the following year for his 36 goal breakout season.

    • @0725038
      @0725038 Год назад

      @@IRanOutOfPhrases I agree with everything you say, but take a look at 2006-2007. That club looked A LOT like the habs right now. Weak offense with old players and a very talented young blue line. Sharp did alright, but he didnt have any help either. Dach is in the same situation, but he's doing much better offensively and defensively while being 2 years younger. The way he's going right now, if you can give him two players that are as talented as him, I expect him to be better than Sharp.

    • @IRanOutOfPhrases
      @IRanOutOfPhrases Год назад

      @@0725038 Definitely true that the Habs now are very comparable to that rendition of the Hawks (I think their standings points percentage is nearly identical, lol) Although I don't know if I'd say Dach is doing just as well offensively as 2007 Sharp. Because like I was saying, Sharp came onto the team and was being wasted on the bottom two lines, including for a large chunk of the 2006-07 season. Dach on the other hand has been on line 1 from the moment he landed in Montreal, getting to play with Suzuki & Caulfield for roughly 40 games this year. That's a significant leg-up on what Sharp was given. Dach is already behind Sharp's 20 goal pace that season. So yeah, he's got Sharp well beat in assists, but Dach also wasn't relying on the likes of Arkhipov & Salmelainen to put in goals for him for half a season, haha
      I'd still need to see Dach really ratchet things up another level before Chicago can start looking really dumb on this one. As you said though, he's only 21, so its quite possible we've not seen his best yet.
      I think one other thing to keep in perspective though is I think in the end, it probably still was going to be the right move to trade him when they did. His first three years were all quite rough, with the most recent being particularly brutal. He was even put in a position to succeed last year too, with lots of time on the top two lines with Kane, Debrincat, and on occassion a splash of Toews. It just didn't work. Would THIS year have gone any better for him? Given the state of the Hawks this year, I think his downward trend very well would have continued. Even Kane is having a down year this season. You need to get what value you can in a trade before its too late. Perhaps they can be faulted for not having enough patience, we'll see over time. But sometimes you need to hit the reset button and maximize the amount of draft picks you have to give yourself as many chances as possible to get lucky. And unlike Philly with Sharp, they at least gave him a fair chance.

    I'll say this though, being a third overall pick is a lot of pressure... until you change team. Dach in Montreal doesn't have to play like the third best player of his class like he did in Chicago, because the Habs didn't give that much for him. As long as that 13th overall pick doesn't turn into a superstar, Habs fans and media will be more than happy if he's just a solid top 6 player. Some players thrive under pressure, but Dach seems to have a lot more fun with the lower expectations he has in Montreal, which ironically makes him actually better

    Do we know how many good centremen the Hawks have in waiting? What was the chemistry in the room with this kid? What was Dach asking for through his agent? Was Dach threatening to not play for Chicago? Is there a clause which kicks in that would have cost $ to Chicago? What were the coaching assessments on Dach? A 13th pick isn't exactly dog-food on a roster, what makes you think the Hawks don't realise what they're giving and for what they're getting? Easy to 2nd guess...

    At no point did I understand why the Blackhawks traded Dach. 21 years old is not usually the guys a rebuilding team trades away. You trade away guys like Kane or Toews, who are old and near the end of their career, but could still be of value to teams in contention. I guess the team had given up on him. Maybe he wasn't getting along with the coaches. Maybe he silently requested a trade. Maybe the GM had just finished an abnormally large joint when he made the deal. Idk. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

  • @miketietsort5184

    Kyle Davidson is a bad joke of a GM, as bad as the Dach deal was it not an isolated mistake..
    Got Rid of - to For
    1. DeBrincat - Ottawa One 1st rd 22 Pick (7th overall K. Korchinski) One 2nd rd 22 Pick (39th overall P. Ludwinski), & one 3rd or 4th rd Pick in 2024 TWENTY FOUR
    2. Dach - Montreal One 1st rd 22 Pick (13th overall F. Nazar), & One 3rd rd 22 Pick (66th overall Gavin Hayes)
    3. Strome - Washington Nothing
    4. Kubalik - Detroit Nothing
    5. De Haan - Carolina Nothing
    6. Gustafsson - Washington Nothing
    7. Lankinen - Nashville Nothing
    Even the Hagel deal at last years Trade Deadline was a mistake, then and now.
    I like Korchinski as a 7th overall Pick, but a 7th, 39th & a 3rd or 4th round Pick is Poor return for a Guy that just turned 25 who already has TWO 40+ Goal Seasons, and 32 Goals in 52 Games the Covid shortened Season. As for the Dach Trade I am NOT as thrilled on Nazar the 13th overall Pick in that horrible deal, thinking the Hawks gave up Dach for nothing.

    Anyone can go back to what I said this past summer and see that I believed Dach was not given a chance in Chicago. But I didn't blame Chicago. They had Toews and Strome playing Center already. Toews was making over $10M and was a Stanley cup champion. So he was going to play on the top 2 lines. Then you had Strome who was also a top 3 pick, was the same size and had 2 years of experience more than Dach. So Dach ended up playing on the 3rd or 4th line. Chicago put all their $$$ in their top 2 lines. The 3rd and 4th line wingers were all plugs or grinders. What can you expect from Dach. Hey, 18 year old rookie, we'll put you with Andrew Shaw and Zack Smith.. Now go up there get 50 points. Like that was ever going to pan out. I just don't understand why Chicago let him go AFTER they decided on a rebuild. I guess they didn't see a potential that they were happy with. Oh well. Their loss.
    A lot of people were upset to see Romanov go. Me too. But you can't compare those 2 players. The Habs needed to score goals and they got a player who has the potential to be a real star. And maybe thought the Habs traded a good solid defensemen for a bust but Dach is proving these fans wrong.
