Dear Dr. Ellis-Jones, I love anything from Eric Butterworth. Thank you for sharing. I’d like to share with you a sermon I got to deliver today. What’s the easiest way to do that? Richard
Ian, Is there any way that I could get a copy of those tapes or possibly even get a CD copy of those tapes you referenced in which he discusses reincarnation? Thank you, Jonathan
Hello Ian, It has been a few months since I've had time to get back to these videos and to contact you. I'm curious whether or not you know if Eric Butterworth in his public lectures ever specifically addressed the subject of what happens when people die. Certainly he mentions reincarnation in his books and in videos such as this one. I have read most of his books and listen to a great many of his lectures. I have not seen him addressed that subject for specifically than references to reincarnation. Of course, that is probably the age-old question that so many people want to know, and I suppose it only those who have actually experienced this transition would really be able to say. Nevertheless, it is a question about which I have wondered for years. I would appreciate your thoughts on the subject. Blessings, Jonathan
Blessings, Jonathan--and glad to have you back. I have tapes of Butterworth's that are on the subject of reincarnation. Being a Unity minister, he affirms a non-dogmatic belief, as a working hypothesis you might say, in reincarnation. His books also touch on that subject as you rightly say. Like most New Thoughters he was of the view that we are spirit or consciousness and that consciousness survives the physical destruction of death. We continue to unfold after physical death, ever onwards and upwards. As you say, none of us can be too dogmatic on this matter. That is why Jesus also had little to say on the subject of life after death. The important thing is to focus on life in the here and now. Love and Blessings, Ian.
@@drianej Thank you so very much Ian for taking the time to directly answer what can be a very challenging question. You're right, Jesus was careful to avoid being too specific about what happens after people die. One thing that I do not understand is Jesus' comments about hell. I wonder what he meant. Jonathan
Jesus believed in hell but it seems that what he believed in was not some place for eternal, never-ending punishment but something purificatory, more like the Catholic doctrine of purgatory. Gehenna-a rubbish tip outside Jerusalem where stuff was burned. As I say, more a case of purification than eternal torment. Looked at allegorically, we create our own heaven or hell by our thoughts and by the lives we lead. Cheers!
Thank you. This is a complicated subject. Some people focus on perhaps too much, and some people seem to skirt around it. So It is confusing for a lot of people I think. In all of the translations of the Bible I have read, I have not yet come across any translations in which Jesus clearly outlines a specific time. For hell, whether permanent for punishment or temporary for purification. I suppose one would have to be able to research the original meanings in Aramaic, which I think is the language. Jesus actually spoke, to fully understand it better.
This morning, as I was continuing on my recent rereading of Eric's 1965 book, life is for living, on page 80, we read: " Life can be happy and effective. You can make every day that you live a dance, a dirge or a life march as you will. Here's a lesson you will enjoy and use or it will point to new way of life and life is for living!" This is the introduction he wrote to the chapter, on page 80, from fretting to letting. The final chapter of this book, which I've read many times, is titled, life and death. Death. In this chapter he goes as near to the subject of what happens after we die as he does anywhere else, even further than he goes in the chapter on reincarnation in his book, discover the power within you. You. Nowhere else have I seen in any of his writings were lectures that I've been through. Any attempt to go more closely to this subject than he does here. The book is still available. I occasionally go to eBay and purchase copies of this book to give out as gifts. It's a little pocketbook usually with the brown cover. Although there were other editions. I even found one that he had autographed. Anyway, he was very very reluctant to delve into the subject of what happens after we die. Either he felt it wasn't as important as the decision that we are making and the life that we are living right now, or perhaps some other reason existed for his reluctance to want to talk about that subject. Nevertheless, he makes a very strong case for reincarnation and makes the point that Jesus taught, ye shall be perfect as your father in heaven is perfect. He makes occasional glancing references to that point in some of his lectures, like one of which he mentions that you have all eternity to work things out. Coming from a Methodist and Baptist background, I wish that he had tackled this question of what happens after we die in more depth. But it is what it is. I greatly appreciate that you post these lectures. I contacted one of the librarians at unity years ago, and she was very nice. She literally pulled out every single issue of good business. I think it was called and any other magazines that they had copies of in which Eric had ever written an article. And she made color copies of every single page that they have in their library. It was several hundred pages. They are a treasure trove of information about Eric's practical views on applying the lessons he talked about in his lectures in daily life.
