    Ancient Shaolin temple teached subjects are,
    1. Philosophy (zen, Buddhism, Taoism) for mind strongness;
    2. Physical training (excercises, Kung fu, meditation) for body strongness;
    3. Medicine (herbs knowledge, disease & injuries healing, health science, longevity of natural life).

    Was absolutely glued to the screen for all 5 episodes of this documentary. An underlying theme of humility, power and wisdom. A wonderful opportunity to see the monks way of life at the Shaolin Temple and to those ambassadors who have brought Kung Fu to the world. Thank you for posting such a worthy account of this special martial art.

      The national geographic article " battle for the soul of kungfu"mentions when a film crew went there to film a pro MMA fighter testing his skills against a monk. The article goes on to say the MMA fighter went home bruised. You've had students with MMA experience sparring the monks there. To think they would"t be prepared for something like that is foolish.

    Shaolin Kung Fu is a great way to make a lot of money with foreigners.

    •  4 года назад

      But don't you think that by bringing Kung Fu to the masses makes it flourish and be increasingly popular? Kung Fu has to be like a shark. If the shark stops swimming, it will actually die.

    • @MaharlikaAWA

      @ of course bringing any kind of martial arts to people is great. I'm just saying really if you're a foreigner and you go and train in China and go back to your native country then you're going to make tons of money and be very popular. Especially in a third world country.

    Is someone asked me what the special talent or skill of people in the US--what our cultural deposit--is, I would say it's being able to deal with chaos, since we all have lived in chaos all our lives. We can't do anything because we can't cooperate with each other, but nobody can do anything to us either. Supposedly the Nazi general in charge of the Western Front in World War Two said, "If the Americans had ever gotten organized, I could have beat them." Am I joking here? No. What comes of this? We have no bad habits to lose, for the only habit we have is refusing to cooperate with anybody. We are Peter Pan: "I'll never grow up." So if we ever decide to grow up, we will grow up very fast.

    To be a Shaolin monk or an "ambassador" of the Temple, is it mandatory to accept the Buddhist faith?
    Or is it possible to have a Christian representative from the Shaolin Temple, for example?

    • @elvinccw
      @elvinccw 3 года назад +3

      You don't need to change faith or embrace Buddhism but in order to deeply understand Shaolin martial arts spirit and values, you must at least cultivate Buddhism, as Shaolin foundation is built on Buddhism itself

    • @akinakinsiku6818
      @akinakinsiku6818 2 года назад

      depends on what you mean by 'representative from the Shaolin Temple". At the temple, you have full ordinated monks with complete Buddhists vows and you have secular disciples. If you live in the temple you will undoubtably need to study Buddhism and engage with temple religious practices. However if you study Shaolin martial arts outside the temple, you do not necessarily have to, but will be exposed to and learn some aspects of the philosophy. There are numerous practitioners and masters that aren't Buddhists. There are some masters that believe you cannot get the fullness of Shaolin martial arts without the religion, but there are other Shaolin masters that believe otherwise.

    Promote or business? Informing is one thing but opening a school and teach to whoever paid for the course...this is again KungFu philosophy. As KungFu is a very powerfull art and could be very dangerous, master choose "pure heart" student. Basic. Even kids know that. Kunfu is different that taking a yoga class...i guess the master doesn't teach everything.

    Interesting. I would have preferred if it had been on shaolin KUNG FU instead of kung fu SHAOLINS; learn more about the techniques instead of the people who practice it. There definitely has to be more room for women in Kung Fu : men dedicate themselves to that art while women raise the family... tradition can sometimes be good but at some point it's also a box trapping the culture and the gender roles. A culture grows and I liked the part where the practitioners were open to new clienteles, technologies and training approches. I think it's ok to expect your students to work hard and try their very best but abusing them isn't the right way to go in encouraging them, developing a sense of accomplishment and a will to pursue this hard path. Also, Even though Kung Fu is about "perfecting" who's to say what's perfect? And everyone can reach their own ideal level of commitment and skills without "having failed" at learning something, and for the teacher without "having failed" at teaching something. If life is about that balance, why try to force it ?

  • @chineseboxer108
    @chineseboxer108 4 года назад +6

    All kung fu definitely did NOT originate at the Shaolin Temple. That is the most ridiculous claim that for some reason keeps getting repeated over and over again. That's like saying they invented running and jumping, kicking and punching. People had martial art systems long before the Shaolin Temple was around. Damo a.k.a Bodhidharma, the monk who first taught physical training (not specifically fighting arts but stretching and breathing exercises (Yi Jin Jing and Xisui Jing) to help the Shaolin monks improve their meditation practice) to the monks at Shaolin was from India. He likely didn't invent it because Yoga was already being practiced in India long before Damo came along.
    As for the Lohan 18 hands, Damo likely didn't invent that either. And for your information, I've never seen two coaches or monks in China at the Shaolin Temple or anywhere on Earth do the Lohan 18 hands the same, ever! (I know that's flawed logic but then please show me the "real" original Lohan 18 hands?) So none of them are likely authentic. And even if any of them are, they originated elsewhere, and not from Shaolin. Likely India.
    Martial arts, a.k.a Military Arts, literally Wu-shu in Mandarin also existed in China long before the Shaolin Temple existed as did it wherever there were people. Do you mean to suggest that they never had any training system anywhere else before? LOL Here is a big fat simple clue for you, Guan Yu a.k.a General Kwan was swinging around his Kwan Dao long before Damo arrived at Shaolin Temple. lol Any historian from anywhere would laugh at you for suggesting the idea that "all martial arts comes from Shaolin." Shaolin Temple isn't even the only temple where monks practiced martial arts. Much of the real history of Shaolin Temple is confused with legends from fictional literature. Hey, ever hear of the Olympic Games? They were around for hundreds of years before Shaolin was dreamed of, and wrestling was one of the competition categories as were other martial arts like javelin throwing. Most of the weapons the monks use today also pre-date Shaolin Temple by over a 1000 years, for example; staff, swords, spears, halberds...
    Over time Shaolin Temple was a place that collected and developed many Chinese martial arts styles and were spread out from there. I'm sure some other martial arts that were invented on their own, likely claimed it originated from Shaolin as to appear more legitimate because Shaolin had/has a perceived reputation and therefore gave the style more prowess and credibility. Look at the history/legend of Praying Mantis style for example. In a nut shell; Guy challenges monks to a fight. He loses. Goes out into the woods and sees some praying mantises fighting. Studies their movements and adapts them to his training and beats the monks. Now praying mantis style is a part of the Shaolin system.
    This is what happens when you believe at face value what some country bumpkin uneducated illiterate communist/capitalist "monks" who don't know better themselves. Stop spreading BS because eventually people will figure it out and you will be the one looking stupid, like I once did. Today Shaolin Kung fu is a great thing on its own, no need to spread extra lies to promote it. If you think I'm talking shit, check some history books or even some dates on Wikipedia.

      It's very true what you are saying. When you arrive in Dengfeng there is a statue which saying: Shaolin, the birthplace of all martial arts! it's nice to be seen for the tourist but it's not true. Kung Fu was in China long before Shaolin Temple.
