the genius thing about Frisell is that his personality comes through his instrument, no matter what guitar he plays or who he is playing with. His guitar becomes truly an extension of himself. Providing a lexicon of emotion more effective than spoken words. Hearing him play is like getting a phone call from someone you love when you are far away and haven't seen them in a long time.

This reminds me of the classic albums with Bill Evans and Jim Hall--"Undercurrent," then the followup 'Intermodulation" and I think that is the reason Frisell's guitar is so laid back in this song, is that it is all interplay with the piano, in the manner of Jim Hall, subtle and constant. Perhaps if it were a studio album with many takes, the exact amount of air time for each musician might be achieved, but as it is, this is a great piece.
As to Bill in a suit . . . he has a prom date after.

My word--what is the problem, people? This is a nice interpretation of a great standard, and Chick and Bill's playing complement each other beautifully here. It's obvious from their faces that they're having a good time and have a lot of mutual respect for each other. Their differing styles just show how jazz at its best is a musical conversation between the players--which is exactly what's happening here.

It's funny, I was just thinking the other day that Bill never seems to play with a piano player or other keyboards -- and here he is with Corea. Constantly surprising, constantly amazing.

How disgusting to say that Bill Frisell is an over rated jazz guitarist or that he is over-matched. It's not a competition. Bill is not a straight ahead jazz player. He has is own very unique style, which in this particular performance may not blend well. Bill is not known for his superior jazz chops. Both Bill and Chick are amazing musicians and that's it!

Chick Corea has worked and played with some of the greatest guitar players of all time but i had no idea that him and Bill Frisell even shared the same stage. Damn this sounds absolutely beautiful from two of the most iconic masters of their respective eras, i would love to see these two make a full duo album one day, it would be a dream come true.

When I was in NY in the late 80s I got a chance to play with Bill once at Visiones and I played a few times with Ben Monder. I was at a session with you once and was really hoping to play with you but it didn't happen. I loved the stuff you and Bill did together and often checked you out at places like the knitting Factory. (The original one) So much of what I do now was based on those experiences.

I think that it's easy for people to listen with their eyes. Just listen to the audio, he isn't afraid at all. The man is one of the best at supporting another musician. They are two completely different types of players. If you had a guitar player who played with chops like Chick it would have been way to crowded. Some people think that chops make you something special, but Bill has an ear for melody. That is the reason that he is adored by so many.

Chick carries this venture in terms of ideas, harmonies, and swing. Still, it's refreshing to hear Frisell doing a standard and negotiating the changes (for the most part). The ultimate version of this tune may be Monty Alexander's (on the album ("We've Only Just Begun").

Very interesting and adventurous meeting indeed. Love both equally but for different reasons. Chick has a very solid, sparkling harmonic and melodic imagination; Bill plays from a much quieter and less anxious place, where each idea seems to be born out of silence. Just like Charlie Haden. Chick brings an arsenal of sounds and unfolds as the music develops; it is a safe and effective way of producing good quality music all the time. But less inspiring (to me) than Keith or Herbie Hancocks leaps in the dark...

Commenters: It's probably safe to say that Chick Corea can play with anyone he wants, so better to not comment with opinions that have nothing to do with what happened here. I'm also sure no one was embarrassed here. Performing in any artistic venue and genre is always spontaneous, mistakes and al. It's also a "confidence game"....(told to me years ago by some of my friends who happen to be amongst the best Musicians on the Globe) I guess some of you know what Clint Eastwood said regarding opinions?

  • @MelodicDreamers
    @MelodicDreamers 11 лет назад +2

I would have to disagree. I can understand seeing Bill in a different light technically than someone like Joe Pass or Pat Metheny, but Bill's strengths are in his unique voice and ear for melody and space. When you have guys like Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Mike Moreno and many more giving you praise, you have to be doing something right.

Guitar-piano duos are a good idea. This one seems to make sense a bit like a Jim Hall-Bill Evans one. I couldn't help think, though, that Corea-McLaughlin duos almost didn't work at all, maybe because John McLaughlin plays too much loud electric lead to play quiet jazz guitar-piano duos on a jazz guitar with the right level of ease or familiarity. Sense and sensibility and all that...On an acoustic guitar, though, McLaughlin can have a good sensibility for playing with piano. Jan Hammer and Katia Labeque duos come to mind.

Chick and Bill are just two vastly different types of players. I'm a big Chick fan from decades ago, but Chick has always been extremely definitive in his approach to playing. Frisell plays with the space between the notes and allows the space to frame his notes. Chick has never really been that kind of musician. When I saw the title to this video my brain said mismatch, but I was open. Chick is Chick and Bill is Bill. They're both great but not similar at all.

their style aren't really matched , that's all.
playing in minimal approach doesn't mean he got no chops.
you should watch piano duet concert btw chick and hiromi. Hiromi play more aggressively than chick, but that doesn't mean she's better player. It's just different approah.
some peopel really need to learn what 'jazz' truly means, before you spilled your 'uneducated' opinion

Really weird, why is Bill wearing a suit? I've seen him many times but never dressed like this. What was the occasion? He doesn't seem to play as freely as usual. Corea doesn't give him much space. And what about Frisell's humble gesture at the end of the clip? Strange...
