Huge fan of both bands. Slipknot being my favorite, Mushroomhead being a band I'm super passionate about. 100% both bands were inspired by Mr. Bungle. You can definitely hear the inspiration in Mushroomhead's music with all the keyboards and weird elements. Seen both Slipknot and Mushroomhead live. Slipknot has an incredible stage presence, and killer sound. While Mushroomhead's shows are smaller, they're a bit more intimate. People can like whoever they want, both bands are great to me!

I legitimately believe that Mike Patton is literally one of the most gifted singers who has ever lived. People always roll their eyes when I say that, but who else has ever demonstrated the sheer vocal range that he has? He can sound like an angel one second, and completely inhuman the next with zero effort. His high notes, the animal noises, the guttural Cookie Monster vocals, sometimes all in the same breath- it's insane. Always great to see some Mr Bungle love on the channel. You hit the nail right on Craig's head with the Mr. Bungle connection, AJ. That was always my theory about this whole thing as well. I never thought either band ripped each other off, I just thought they were both very inspired by Mr. Bungle. Like you showed in the vid, both bands early music clearly shows that influence. Funny enough, just last night I was listening to a YT mix compilation of old Slipknot stuff (tracks from MFKR and some old demos) and YT's automatic content ID mistakenly claimed one of the songs as "The Bends" by Mr. Bungle 🤣. Strangely, that was the only song claimed too. I actually had a bit of an audible chuckle from that. So even YT's algorithms seem to agree about the Mr. Bungle influence lol. As for The Knot and Mushroomhead playing a show together, I think that would be pretty fucking epic tbh. Many fans seem to want it to happen and I think it probably will happen at some point. I just wish both bands would have handled the bs better from the start. I always thought it was a missed opportunity for the fans that they never played shows together. I've also thought each band would compliment each other extremely well if they toured together or at least played random shows together. Any Slipknot show you go to will be massive ofc, but if they announced even a single special show with Mushroomhead, it would be insane. It would be pretty monumental.
Anyway, great job on the video. I really like the direction you took it in, and introducing new people to the legendary Mr. Bungle & Mike Patton is always a good thing 🤘.
    • Oh, and if anyone wants to see the YT algorithm thinking OG Slipknot is Mr. Bungle for themselves: The vid is titled "SlipKnoT Demos '95-'97" on some random channel called 8DaezTV.
It's weird to realize that Mr. Bungle is getting some royalties off of Slipknot tracks. It's as if Slipknot is paying forward their tribute to Bungle without even knowing 😂.

    • @modifidious
      @modifidious 2 года назад

They didn't mistakenly put "the bends by mr. Bungle" on accident, because in the actual video it shows the bends by mr bungle and that's because slipknot used the song at their live concert at clearwater beach 1996

Mr. Bungle were super underated & way ahead of there time. AJ if you ever get a chance to, check out an old band called 'Pinkly Smooth.' If you haven't ever heard of them before. @Jerac-X 2 года назад +4

Sadly its not so much that they stayed in the shadow, as much as they didnt want to sign away the rights to their music to get a big push from a label. In the end it probably wasn't the best/smartest financial or professional decision, but they (Steve specifically) do/does own 100% of the library.
I fully believe that if they had signed with Roadrunner in 96 or 98 or whenever, that the placement on the large festivals would have pushed them up in place of Slipknot. Especially considering RR only went and found Knot after the MRH deal didnt work out.
An entire multiverse of possible "what if" scenarios for sure. For better or worse our musical tastes are largely based on what is easily presented before us. And the Knot got loads of radio play, touring opportunities, and advertisement beyond anything MRH could muster. Think I'm wrong, look no further than these comments on how many people are utterly oblivious to who Mr Bungle is. Or really any thing Mike Patton has done beyond Faith No More.

When Slipknot signed with RR it was 4 guys, no masks and singer who wrapped himself with tape. Two years later, and it's nine guys in masks and orange jumpsuits, you do the math.

Was crazy seeing MH live in Cleveland back in the 90's-2000's. Some of my favorite memories are from those shows. Some of Mushroomhead's members have alot of other bands that are super sick too. Especially Jmann & Dave "Gravy" Felton's bands. Dave is easily one of my favorite guitarists. Loved those shows as well. So many hidden metal gems that came out of Cleveland that most of the world have no clue about. I guess you'd have to frequent and grow up in that scene to fully respect and appreciate it. This was a time of no social media. Lots of hear say, Concert flyers, News papers and magazines is what got the word out about bands back then. Mushroomhead & Slipknot both will forever be killer bands to me . Old Skool MH is my shit. I'll say what isn't being said here about the MH success or lacking of it. They f*cked up turning down Roadrunner. It's that simple. With that Roadrunner support, Money and promotion they could have easily been as successful as Slipknot. Being bad decisions were made we'll never know now. I suppose it's all a matter of my opinion at this point lol. Despite of knowing how the industry works and how fans or just humans react with the psychology of these things being put in their face and ear holes. They would have definitely been more successful with Roadrunner. Love your channel dude. 🤘🏼💀

Yet, he's the one who's ran that band into the ground, and in so many different ways too. They haven't released a good album (imo) since XIII. Which is because Skinny takes over the role of producer (on top of everything else), instead of working with somebody who knows what they're doing. You know I don’t think people appreciate just how influential Mr Bungle actually is,
Korn has sited them as one of their main influences sound wise, if you take a way the hip hop drum and bass pattern and listen to the guitars, it’s a bunch of reworked bungle riffs,
And korn wether you like them or not was a helluva influence on metal in the 90s gaining hella popularity and having people emulate the Korn sound,
Low af tunings and crazy sounding riffs,
So with no Mr bungle, the modern metal scene would not have become what it is today.

Everything you said in that video are 100% correct, both bands did in fact hate each other, both were talking shit about each other, even Mushroomhead tried to fabricate & sugarcoat it to make it where they're like "oH iTs AlL fAnMaDe iT wAs AlL dOnE bY dA fAnS wE lUv SlIpKnOt" to hide away the fact that they're guilty of the involvement of this feud. (Sad I missed Mr. Bungle AND Faith No More when Mike dropped out of the tour)

As someone who was actually there, a close friend of members of the Slipknot, and watched the progression and evolution of the band, I think maybe I can clear up a lot of this silliness. Mr. Bungle was a huge influence on Shawn, no way around it. He was way into that band along with a lot of more experimental bands and confrontational industrial Art like Survival Research Laboratories. When I first saw Slipknot in 1995 it seemed more like Performance Art than a Metal Show. Unlike metal and rock's standard grandstanding and pain-stricken guitar solo faces, it was like a weird Dadaist play, backyard freak show, or a DIY horror movie.
I think unless you were a part of the underground music scene in the late 80s and early 90s, it's hard to understand the level of experimentation that was going on. Since no one was paying attention, a lot of strange and sometimes wonderful bands appeared. Largely because of the Punk and Hardcore influence on the underground, pretty much anything was allowed. From Riot Grrll bands playing topless and mutilating strapons on stage with chainsaws to Gwar to bands doing complete stage shows with lighting and special effects, they can up with on their own. There was always a sense of danger in going to a show by a band you had never heard of. I mean was it going to be four guys staring at their shoes for 45 minutes or were you going to watch a guy shoot half dollars out of his belly button, a 6foot woman do fire breathing or get sprayed with urine. And the boys were at Safari night after night taking notes.
As far as the mask thing goes, it started out with their first show being Halloween and it just became their thing. Now the coveralls thing is a little different. Mr. Bungle, Slipknot, and Mushroomhead were not the first to wear coveralls. Also, they were the first to use numbers. If you really want to go far back, DeVo started performing in Ohio back in 1972. I know they aren't really metal but they were a huge band in the early 80s. So coveralls and masks are really nothing groundbreaking. Oh, and something must people miss is the influence of Clockwork Orange.
In 1997, Shawn owned Safari Nite Club and there are two bands that played that summer that both wore coveralls and identified with numbers. The first was Bobgoblin and the other was Mog Stunt Team. MST is a prime example of the weirdness of 1990 and a wonderful rabbit hole to explore. They "believed" that an alien was following them around and sabotaging their shows. They were scheduled twice in 1997, the first time hours before the show, the whole club flooded with sewage. The second time Slipknot opened for them on September 12th, 1997. the most notable part of this show is that Andy quit on stage. Now did he quit because of the alien's influence? It is one of those mysteries that may never be solved. One thing I can say is that the numbers appeared shortly after that. Also, MST was on Amphetamine Reptile Records and toured extensively and I'm sure played Cleveland and so did Bobgoblin.
By the time they were signed to Roadrunner in July of 1998, Slipknot's music including a majority of the Self-Titled album were standards in their set. The masks, coveralls, stage show, and numbers had been a part of the band for over 10 months. For the most part, they were the band that would appear at Ozzfest and takes everyone by surprise. The first time the band even had heard the name Mushroomhead was during a visit to Roadrunners offices in New York to finalize the details of the contract. Paul told me a few days after they returned that one of the A&R people at RR had shown them a press kit of this band from Ohio that wore masks and coveralls. They had shopped themselves to RR but nothing came of it. So, this idea that they copied Mushroomhead or that Roadrunner "Developed" Slipknot, is not founded in facts. Though I can see where seeing this band come out of nowhere and seems a lot like yours on a label you had shopped to, could raise some eyebrows. However, at the time I don't think anyone outside of Ohio had a clue who they were.
I've heard a lot of rumors over the years about MRH's dealings with RR. One was that they flat out were rejected by RR and the other was that MRH had refused the deal offered to them. Who knows what the truth is. I know that one thing is a fact, RR didn't sign Slipknot, Ross Robinson did on his imprint label. Ross had an ongoing relationship with the band and had even showcased them in Los Vegas at the EAT'M festival. It was after the three or four major labels that seemed interested passed that Ross decided to just sign them to IAM Recordings and release them through RR. Really without Ross' belief in the band, who knows what would have happened. Most of the major labels at the time were scared of Slipknot. They just didn't see them as a "product" they could invest in. In a way, Mushroomhead should have been thanking Slipknot for bringing masked, coverall-wearing metal bands into the mainstream.

What I got out of it was Shawn owned a night club and had the opportunity to borrow themes from many bands. Threw it into a huge pot called it slipknot. Then they sold it to everyone. Including myself. It’s great fucking music. We can all cry about line up changes but everyone watching has labeled themselves a maggot at sometime or another or you wouldn’t be watching.

Both bands are good in my mind. Sincerely love them both. Have listened to both religiously since I was a teenager. When it comes to comparing bands and sounds. All of slipknot albums have consistency, and have a very distinctive sound. You listen to slipknot, you know what you're getting. While mushroomhead albums all sound very different. Some had more of a straight forward metal sound, some have more ballads and clean vocals, some have a nu-metal sound where others are more experimental and throw techno stuff in. They're definitely different and have their own thing going on. Between the two? Slipknot wins. They have more visuals and their live shows are better, but not knocking mushroomhead in the slightest bit. They're both good. I never understood why so many people had to choose and argue between the two. Enjoy them both, and support em both.
But, I will say this. fuck skinny. I heard he's a dick. No coincidence why so many members have left and been fired over the years. The guy is a huge egomaniac.

SO.... room full of musicians because well... look who's in the band right. THEN they come out and do this Fantomas thing... we were like WHAT THE??? I got some other stuff that year but it was all put to the side and I was glued to the cheap tape player and Blue cassette I got. (Yes the inner tape was Blue) I played the hell out of it. I can even remember first time hearing Slipknot. I got a We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N' Roll: The Ozzfest '99 Cd sampler with 2 rough mixes of Surfacing and Wait and Bleed. Of that Bay Area art, rock-against-rock music scene, I always preferred Acid Rain/Idiot Flesh to Mr. Bungle, probably because I heard them first. They later became Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and created some genuinely odd metal(?) music.
