  • Mushroomhead formed in the early 90s in Cleveland, Ohio and became one of the more interesting bands to be carried along on the nu metal wave in the early 2000s. This video is a ‘return to’ the old LINESINWAX format of a complete discography retrospective, covering every studio album from this interesting outfit, right up to the present day.
I’ll also be digging into some of the band’s history Along The Way (see what I did there?) as well as adding my opinions on their music and addressing (or attempting to address) their line-up changes as we go along.
Get a drink, it’s gonna be a long one.

    CORRECTIONS:
At the start of the video I explain that Mushroomhead’s first ever gig was on a support slot for Gwar. This is incorrect - the Gwar support show was their 2nd ever gig, the first being only a number of days earlier.
When talking about M3 I incorrectly called track “The Final Act”, “The Final Conflict” instead. D’oh.
By the video’s publication date of July 2022, there have been several further line-up changes, which were not mentioned in the video as they were outside of the scope of the project. Sometime towards the end of 2021, it seems that Jackie left Mushroomhead, although there is no official statement from the band as to how or why.
As of the June 2022 UK and EU tour, Scott Beck has replaced J Mann, Joe Gaal has replaced Tommy Shaffner, and Aydin Michael has replaced Stitch. It is unclear at the time of writing whether these members are absent for the European leg of the tour, or have dropped out of Mushroomhead permanently. I’d be surprised if the latter was the case, but at this point I’m past caring after spending the last few months totally enraptured in the twists and turns of this band’s members LOL
Towards the end of the video I incorrectly addressed Shmotz’ real name as Tim Schmitz. His name is Tom Schmitz.

I'm almost 38 now and I first started going to MRH shows in the late 90's. My first show was their famous Halloween shows (I think in 98?). They were handing out 3 song demos of the first 3 tracks of M3 before its release. It came in just a carboard sleeve with the purple smoke on it and the track names on the back. 1995-2000 MRH was the face of Cleveland metal scene, we saw them at least once a month at various venues across northeast Ohio. They started to get bigger everywhere else but after XX and the release of XIII they started to fade out in Ohio. I wasn't a fan of XX remixed sounds or XIII as a whole, but I'll always love the first 3 albums. I still have all my original prints of the CDs and the 97 remix. It was a special era for us in Ohio. Around the time of XIII more complex and heavier bands like Chimaira were starting to take over.

I've gotten into Mushroomhead pretty late, I was familiar with them before 2020 and would listen to Sun Doesn't Rise a few times but I didn't get into them until I heard Seen It All, that song was like a planted seed, I didn't get into it at first but then the song started to grow on me more and more and made me interested in what the band was about and I fell in love with them ever since. There's an album Rauckhorst fronted vocals on long before he had ever joined Mushroomhead from a band called "Garmonbozia" the album is called Feature Presentation and I got to say listening to it sounds like a mix between the early days of Mushroomhead and Mr. Bungle.

Great discography retrospective, thank you so much for the video i had a blast watching!
I have some thoughts on The Righteous & The Butterfly album which i listened probably hundreds of times since it's release and listening to it currently as well and i also have some compaint about a band as whole
The first time i listen to The Righteous & The Butterfly i also had a problem differentiating between vocalists and not just J-Mann and Waylon but i've mistaken clean part in How Many Times to be Jeffrey's but it actually was Waylon's lol )
But after awhile i had no problem differentiating between all of them, Waylon screams and J-Mann are distinct, J-Mann tends to be a way lower, there just some parts on the album there both Waylon and J-Mann scream at the same time and the sound overlap but other than that no problem
Jeff has very distinct vocals as well so after a few times i had no problem recognizing his clean parts as well
Jackie is only a guest vocalist there so is Jus Mike, so no confusion there and i argue that the song with Jackie might be the best in MRH discography
Qwerty as you mentioned is the most popular song MRH ever made, this fact coupled with highiest chart positions in MRH career and the amazing video production for this album (6 awesome videos was made which often times a sign of a succesful records since these things take a great amount of time and resource) makes it the best album MRH ever made outperforming even their legendary XXIII
As of music aspect it got all the variety, soft songs with clean vocals in it, really heavy ones with a lot of screaming, variety of instrumentals, one of songs feature piano part which is surprised me, and meaningful lyrics i espeacially love the lyrical themes of Qwerty and Out Of My Mind giving the time we're are living right now
But the one thing this band has that i don't like (which unfortunately present in all of their records) is repeating verses in the song, i kinda used to repeating choruses in pop music and it pisses me the hell of, but repeating verses is whole new level of bullshit and honestly kill replay value a bit

There was maybe 5-10 people there total it was amazing like a vip concert will never forget but I will say one thing Jeff didn’t seem to happy with the direction of the band at that time. You could tell he didn’t wanna be there band members threw out their ideas of where they think the band should go only for their input to go unheard. That was set up by Gravy and Skinny who we met outside. We had got there early and saw Dan and some big roadie who introduced us. The only ones we didn't meet was Jeff and Stitch.
Later my son got on stage with Dan on the water drums for a song. I have a plaque on the wall with pictures of us with Skinny and Gravy(no masks), and all their autographs and the drum stick Dan gave my son.
Great memories. I miss that lineup.

Stories For Beautiful... Album is actually pretty damn good , they touch on some sounds from Super Buick , XIII and others .. i bought it Fall of 2010 when it released and thought it was a perfect Fall/ Winter album ..XIII is freaking amazing and Savior Sorrow followed up with some heavy songs and a good mix of styles

I just want to say that this was a great video. You did a great job. Going to sub based on that. I also wanted to add that I've been a fan of MRH since 2001 and also hate all the revolving door of band members. As of this year, Jackie and Tankx (guitars) are out. JMann is up in the air apparently? Who the hell knows. That being said, I loved the new album. @@linesinwax4996 I still feel XX has the most replay value because it was the first album I bought from them when it came out at a local hot topic. However, Savior Sorrow is my favorite vocally. Wylon has such a great voice. 1200 is superb. So it's a tie between the two. The first time I saw them live, I was in middle school. Unfortunately I missed the early J Mann era. Waylon just joined the band, but Savior Sorrow wasn't out or announced yet. I thought Beautiful stories for ugly children was good, but it lacked in production. I remember reading that Gravy was kicked for being an jerk for a bit, but his side of the story was he was always trying to push the band to be better or think of the next step to bring the band up, stating he was the only member who didn't drink or smoke and maybe that was part of their disconnect. I noticed Pig Benos left at the same time. I'm not sure if I ever read anything on his statement of departure. A lot of it ended with Skinny having more ownership and now his current wife, one of the new members, having partial ownership.

    • @linesinwax4996
      @linesinwax4996  2 года назад

Yeah XX is at the top spot for me too!
I read that Pig left because he had just had enough of touring and wanted out of the music scene. I don’t know how true that is, though.
Jackie is also gone from Mushroomhead now. With J Mann sitting out (permanently?) currently too, Skinny is the only remaining original member of the band and doesn’t even appear on stage with them for half of the set. It’s a bizarre situation.
I would have loved to have seen them with Waylon. I caught them on the UK/EU leg of the Righteous & The Butterfly tour, but unfortunately Waylon had already gone by that point.

I fell way down the Mushroomhead hole after finding a copy of Savior Sorrow on the roadside randomly. I ended up owning a few stage and video used Stitch masks (including that QWERTY video mask), along with a couple others made just for sale (like a Roxy made Skinny mask). Ultimately got a little too much insight into the goings on through friends I had made in the scene and kinda fell off of it, but still a huge amount of love for especially the older more creative Superbuick/M3 era stuff.
Great retrospective, definitely brought back a lot of the love for the tunes after I was a bit disenfranchised, and then kicked me right back out of it with the latter albums lol. I can basically listen to Superbuick, M3, and XIII all the way through without feeling like "ah this dead spot" or whatever. After that production basically accounts for most of my qualms, SS and BSFUC were just "Felton bros with some others" mix wise (which was a bad idea because their parts were so bland) and the most memorable parts are Waylon's vocals who tries his fucking heart out. Seen it All has been about the only thing that really piqued my interest since.

    • @linesinwax4996
      @linesinwax4996  2 года назад +1

Thanks man for sharing your insights (and about those cool masks!)
Dave Felton seems like a very talented individual. I’ve seen some interviews with him where he is very passionate about his tone and his guitar playing craft. Which makes it even more frustrating that Beautiful Stories and SS are so terribly bland.
The trajectory that the band has taken, at least in regards to how/why it churns through members is very disheartening, I agree. At least we will always have the classic stuff.
      Cheers!

In losing Waylon and Jeff, im surprised the band kept going. Waylon and Jeff really helped push the band into its most popular years from about 2003-2015. I've always liked Jmann, but Jeff has such a unique style (especially in the early years) and what can be said about Waylon that hasn't been said already. He's got one of the greatest voices ever from his singing to his screaming and it just sounds so beautiful. His clean singing on Save Us (especially live) almost brings a tear to my eye, it's actually one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

But nowadays I just listen to their original 3 '90s albums instead anyway as they're amazing. B Sides maybe not so familiar with but early Rammstein is my favourite Rammstein, Sehnsucht is my no1 and Herzeleid my no2. Can’t beat that guitar sound and those pounding industrial beats.
Rammstein just played near me last Thursday. Glad to see they are still going strong!

I honestly completely disagree with your take on the Waylon era albums, I will say I'm biased cause I got into the band through cause I got into them through Saviour Sorrow. But for me both Saviour Sorrow and Beautiful Stories are great album and still hold plenty of uniqueness. It's just different from the previous efforts imo. I love Saviour Sorrow for the simplicity of it. To me nothing overshadows anything in that record and that's why I like it. I don't think Waylon ever really pushed Jeffery into the back either. Like I said it's just all very different from the first few records, but for me I think it's really good. But I respect your opinion and obviously I love the first few records too

Got into Mushroomhead with XX. Solitaire Unraveling is such a unique and bad@$$ song. Saw the video way back in the day on MTV2 when they would play the Headbangers Ball. Ive bought every album since. Unfortunately they kind of fell off after XIII and Savior Sorrow. I will say I went into A Wonderful Life with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised with what they released.

This was a great video. Although I wasn't there at the begin of them. Even when I live within the same state n practically live the same city as some of them. But I do say each album got better for the worst of them. Each album haves a unique way of its own. Because the band got more interesting when time went on. Yes it was nice to see them adapt to their own way, But for what cost? N as for band members. We'll let's just put it this way. (No credit to the bands for this. ) but yea don't bite that feeds, Even if it is filthy. I mean come on don't treat your band members unfairly just this one does less or more within the band. Yea because each member brought something to that band. J-mann was different from Waylon n Waylon was different from J-Mann. doesn't mean you give one of them a gold star n the other one a fuck you attitude. When their both bringing food/money to your plate. I dunno maybe I wasn't there since the beginning of this band but I know enough n easily find out more. By asking them personally but I won't because I'm tired fighting for this band. All I'm going say some of these guys are my friends n some are better sweet enemies. But regardless this band is done it's time. Time to hang it up.

On paper I agree it definitely looks like MRH should throw in the towel, especially with these further line up changes again now in recent weeks/months. But the latest record did show a lot of promise, if a promise a that took a different direction, it was certainly a better direction than any of the previous tries.
It’s funny, so many people have left MRH now you could reform any classic iteration of MRH but with a different drummer (and JJ of course, if going old school). That would be something to see!

As a fan since damn near the beginning (early into superbuick era), I absolutely agree with everything youve said. I went to tons of their early shows in Lorain and Cleveland, ohio. They were def. a fkn experience to see live. They were my fav. band and my first tattoo, but boy did they really shit the bed in their later years. To see all this pretty much Highschool drama unfold as a fan was very eye opening. I have this bittersweet love for them now. Something I adored so much became like a joke later on. I agree hang it up. The common denominator has always been Skinny and i dont see that changing anytime soon. Well said dude

Are you serious about the mixes? The originals are way better, the versions on XX are completely compressed and have much less dynamics. You kind of describe the sound of the mixes in the complete opposite way they actually sound :D but nonetheless an amazing video. Just saw MRH yesterday over here in Germany and their live shows are still kickass !

    • @linesinwax4996

Perhaps I am looking at XX through rose tinted glasses, but I listened to Eclipse vs Universal versions back to back, and I much preferred the Universal version. It just feels more consistent and even, I’m sure at the cost of some compression and aggressive mastering techniques.
I got no real issues with the old mixes with the exception of some of the vocals on Superbuick songs being mixed far too low. But the Universal XX sound just hits better for me.
Cheers for commenting. Glad you managed to catch them live! For all of the lineup changes, I’ve heard nothing but good things about this tour.

@@linesinwax4996 that's VERY big of you to say. He's catching a lot of flack for being so open with his beliefs, albeit he always has and never got flak for being agnostic. He also never talked down on others beliefs and still doesn't.
Scott Edgel couldn't sing the main hook to solitaire so he didn't make the cut (no one can like Jeff 😉)
Posters of MRH and Slipknot flooded my room growing up 20 min from Cleveland . I've easily seen MRH a hundred times. It's a shame what one person turned that band into more than less.
Universal dropped them because skinny turned down EVERY promo idea for 13. He literally couldn't set aside his ego.
Eternal was the only song the entire band recorded together.
Jmann didn't leave the band because of his father, it just happened to work out in his favor.
Tommy Church is actually a damn good guitarist. He does guitar for Waylon's AKC as well as NOTHING and was good on butterfly but was held back musically big time. He's a machine and I've seen him crank out riffs on a smoke break.

Rewatching this video with the new info that J-Mann left, AGAIN, and also ST1TCH left, it's insane how a band this dysfunctional and with an alleged dictator in the form of Skinny can somehow keep going.
