I get to listening to Bob speak and I feel quite small after listening to everything that he’s accomplished and experienced. I sit with him for a length of time and feel foolish afterwards for draining his time. King Bob indeed. I love how Bob has started to provide guidance towards our beekeeping industry
I’m amazed with how generous he is with his time. I literally wasted over half of his busy Friday… in return he bought my lunch and gave me a hat! 😂
Rock Star quality personality
And with 20 more years of experience people will say "King Ian". LOL
For now maybe we can use Prince Ian. LOL
😂
One important thing is to not rely on one area for your nectar , but be mobile .
Nathan, what a great series. I hope there are more videos on this. Bob Binnie is so knowledgeable and so gracious and forthcoming with sharing the in and out aspects of the beekeeping business. All of his advice is qualified because he has been there and done it.
One more to go in this series, will release next weekend.
@@DuckRiverHoney Awesome, thanks for doing that!
@@DuckRiverHoney Nathan, your questions are spot on! We're expanding this season as well, and in true fashion, Bob gives the advice we need!
He’s been there, done that, reflected on it, and done it again.
My mentor was a pollinator. He kept 1500 hives. At the end of pollination season the hives ware trash. So he only pollinated with half so he could rebuild his numbers. He did this every year.
Wow, that’s a lot of replacement.
Bob is a wealth of great information. I appreciate his honest and laid-back willingness to share his hard-earned wisdom with others.
Nathan, how exciting! And terrifying! Sorry you're kind of in more of a forced situation. Maybe more accelerated than you would have hoped for..? I appreciate the inside look at making that transition, I think there are lots of us sideliners thinking we want to head in that direction. The questions you ask Bob couldn't be much better, all valid to making a viable business succeed. I look forward to seeing the rest of your series and cheering you on to sucess! Also , thanks to Bob, he's such a generous person to help us all gain some wisdom without the cost of failure or reduced outputs in our own operations!
Thanks Guy!
I pollinated blueberries and blackberries in south Georgia for the last 3 years. This spring I'm staying home in northwest Georgia in hopes of healthier bees and a larger honey crop.
That’s interesting, seems a lot of folks having similar experiences.
Looking forward to part 3!!
Saturday
Yes @BobBinne is a wise man ! I’d love to have a ounce of his knowledge .
Bob is a legend
Enjoying this series. Thanks much Nathan and Bob. Great job.
Thanks!
I'm with you on this, I don't really wanna do pollination, all the points that were brought up are valid. And I would be VERY leery of trusting my bees into someone else's care >.
I’ve had a front yard stand in central Florida since 2016 and I finally bought a house last year! It’s worth it. 😊
Awesome!
Hello I am a backyard bee keeper and I am retired from a job and I am now Pastoring a church. I am so sorry to hear about your layoff and I am praying for you and your bee business to do well. I enjoy your videos and you seem to be a wise young man with your head on straight. I greatly appreciated young people like you and I am praying for you and your family. May God Bless you!
Thanks Larry, I appreciate it!
Wisdom is finding people with the knowledge and using it. You hit the jackpot. Go slow and be ready to work your butt off and be ready to adjust for the unknowns.
Thanks Russell.
Two mornings in a row Nathan!
Part 3 next Saturday!
Really enjoyed this. Not much related to my current position, but I feel a little smarter for watching.
Thanks Phillip!
Thank you, Nathan !
Thanks Hope
Great series , lots of info to think about.
Thanks Grant.
Nathan
I really appreciate you showing the business side of things. Especially when you get other professional's points of view, it deepens the information pool. Fascinating, thank you.
Thanks Mike!
Great video and great info!
Thanks Chris!
Very interesting conversation guys.
Thanks Bruce!
This is good info for me. Even though I’m not going full time bees I am just now starting to try and sell larger amounts of honey. Going from retail to wholesale is a tough step due to loss of equity per unit change. Cost of raising bees is significant for a hobbyist almost sideliner so loss of income is a hard pill to swallow. Thanks for the video like always.
Thanks Dave!
What remote microphone are you using. Do you use this microphone on a GoPro also?
Dave I use a Rode Go most of the time. I normally don’t use GoPros to record audio, I just use them for a B camera angle. But I do have a case with a microphone for the GoPro that makes audio on it much better than stock.
Thanks. The wife goes on tours and she can’t hear the guide on the recordings so I thought she could clip a remote microphone on the guide
Nathan... how many videos are you making in this "Bee Business" series of videos? Looking to share the lot with club members heading down similar pathways. Bob has mentioned before that he was interested in the "business end" of beekeeping when he got started and how that business end interest drove his management of the bees. Ignore Old Chuckie Boy - him's a wet blanket - must have a bee in his bonnet! LOL
Nancy, this will be 3 parts. The last will release next Saturday. I’ll have a couple videos with Bob after that, one on the Best Bees for a Beginner, and another on testing for varroa.
What would be the best way to get the queen out of empty super she has about 5or6 frames full of brood now the 25 of February. Thanks
Pollination just sounds like a huge pain with too much to lose.
Depends on your goals. My wife works full time and we have small kids, plus I’m a homebody. So it’s probably not a great fit for me.
What have you found is the mark down % for wholesaling compared to say selling direct at a Farmer's Market?
I offer wholesalers a 35% discount off retail price. That has worked so far but bigger stores like groceries will probably demand more margin. 40-50% would be more in line I expect.
More goodness.
Thanks!
11% overall return!? Even with nuc sales, co packing, retail? Yikes. Nuc sales and value added products have me way over 100%. Not a brag, small scale. But I can't imagine all that outlay and work for 11%. Maybe I heard that wrong.
I think you heard that right. Bob pays his people and himself out of that. Not to mention insurance, equipment, gas, auto, maintenance, electricity, internet, phone, and water. Recalculate your percentage with an hourly rate for your time (total time, not just fooing with nucs) add in gas, something for electric, phone, etc and your numbers will come down.
It’s harder to grow $1M by 10% than it is to grow $100 by 10%. Plus, this is in the consumer staple industry. Lower profit margins, but steady to increasing growth all the way through Covid, recessions, etc.
