I a big believer in safety net programs. I don’t believe in government subsidies but rather help when things fall apart. As primary producers we take in extraordinary risk. Weather can turn all your hard work into bankruptcy within 5 min or very slowly and painfully over a number of months. A safety net will help make those payments

I’ve got an email into our local Farm Service Agency. There are some crop or revenue insurance programs available that I’m interested in. Especially starting out, I don’t have the balance sheet depth in the business to absorb a big hit, and those big hits DO happen in all forms of agriculture.

@@DuckRiverHoney this will step the farm business into the realm of professionalism. You will complain every year paying premium but it all depends on how much risk you take and how comfortable that you are holding the bag. You will find a huge variety of opinion on this

Thanks Ian, I may mention this next week. Risk management is something that a lot of folks should think about, but don’t.

@@DuckRiverHoney as simple as fixing some interest rates to blend the risk on cost of borrowed money, and intermediate as holding 1/3 of the apiary as back up nucs to protect a winter loss, to as involved as holding a subscription to a government sponsored safety net program to help manage financial ruin during disasters.

Hi, Nick NY, Love someone going to be a Business owner. I am a 29 years same location Business owner. The decision you have to make, the size of it you want to make it, go for the most profit and as independent you can be. Do not depend for others to sell your products. Local made Honey is a Plus. One decision I made when I Opened my business was, Did Not Want to be the cheapest shop in the neighborhood. All the cheap Shops got out of business, 29 years and still here. Take good and bad as it comes. Yes it is a Big Ocean of Opportunity do only that much as long is profitable. Good Luck, Good Video.

Thanks Nathan, I feel like we are in the same category of making a full time be business out of a small but sustainable operation . Business is the key word , we love the bees that’s the easy part , it’s growing the business that takes a lot of determination, had work, and faith! Talking to the right people and getting advice is key ( thanks to RUclips you have Bob and Ian some of the best available to you).
I believe the Lord always blesses those who are willing to do the work .Prov.14: 23. Thanks for these videos

Your welcome. You are so fortunate to have Bob to take time for you like that . What a great mentor and if I understand you don’t live too far apart.
Ian Steppler is close to me but he’s a super busy guy ! Maybe if I rolled up there with a toolbox and welding truck and a calf puller in my hand he might let me hang with him for a day ! Lol
I appreciate you sharing what you glean in these videos !
BTW , Ian is very generous with his time for other beekeepers at any level, at our club meetings and anywhere else . We have talked several times . He’s just one of the busiest people I’ve ever met

That's interesting, That quote at the end... While I discovered I was interested in beekeeping in my forties, I wish I had been exposed to beekeeping in my twenties, so it's very similar. The thing is: I'm glad I found I love bees at all. Learning to transition to a business from videos like this helps at any age :D

I’ll throw in my 2 cents as a new beekeeper(joke). There will be a day when you walk out and all your hives have issues. There will be a day when someone some place thinks your bees are there’s. I would say there’s a whole lot of experience setting at that table. That unspoken experience is worth it’s weight in gold. Thank you for showing the video. Thank you Bob for sharing the real nuggets of pure gold. I smile when a new beekeeper asks questions.
I also learn something new everyday and also learn a lot of false teachings with half truths. Rubber meets the road.
    Thanks for sharing the experiences.

Like the quote at the end, and more so the content Bob mentions just before the quote. I see so much truth in the "people just don't want to pick up the shovel" these days. I have a neighbor who can barely afford to live in our neighborhood, but he still cannot do basic home maintenance like replace a broken toilet (which I did for him last year) or fix his lawn mower (it have a broken throttle knob which I fabricated and fixed for him on my lathe) so now he pays a company to mow his lawn even though it means he has to limit his family food budget (yes I offered to do it for him but he felt guilty since I already have done so many other things around his house). People need to get out and work a bit, I have a desk job but I still can get out and pick up the shovel!
I am so hopeful to see you get your business going. I may try and follow your lead :)

The drought here in central east Texas really hit us hard our hay production was down by at least 50% did not harvest any honey from 25 hives but thankfully have made it so far with out loosing any. I am optimistic about this spring look forward to your next video

In regards to what Bob said about telling people if he was going to be a little late on payment. I find that to be 100% how I like to be treated and how I treat customers. Communication is key. It just helps to know where the process is at and puts others at ease to know if something is off schedule.
