- Today we visit Liss Cemetery and church, on a freezing cold but dry day.
On our walk, we find a beautiful Mausoleum with an open door so we can peep inside. at least one coffin was visible.
Liss Church, Church Of Ireland.

Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles and chimneystack over northern gable. Random coursed stone walls with tooled stone plinth course. String courses to tower with pinnacles and crenellations. Crenellations to parapet of vestry. Pointed-arched window openings to nave with Y-tracery and diamond-paned glazing bars. Diamond-shaped window openings with hoodmouldings to central stage of tower. Pointed-arched louvred openings to belfry with hoodmouldings. Square-headed window opening to vestry with tooled stone surround, hoodmoulding and diamond-paned windows. Pointed-segmental chancel window with Y-tracery. Pointed-arched door opening to tower with tooled stone surround, hoodmoulding, timber blind tracery panelled double doors and stone threshold. Pointed-arched door opening to vestry with timber battened door. Church set within graveyard with variety of stone grave markers. The Castle style Mausoleum holds the remains of William Wellington Bailey. He was a Rubber Merchant and Company Director. Late of Plassey House, Limerick. He passed away at 114 Lower Bagott St, Dublin. He was aged 57. He died of Bright's disease. The funeral was to the family burial ground at Liss Cemetery.
The son of Daniel Bailey, a landowner. He lived in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Malay from 1875 to 1906 when he returned to Ireland. In Ceylon and Malay, he was engaged in coffee, cocoa and rubber plantations. He amassed a huge fortune from rubber. In 1906, he returned from Asia and purchased Plassey estate, where he owned and trained race horses. In 1908, his horses won 20 races, winning him over £1,865.
He was survived by his wife Blanche.
He left £368,582 in his will, the equivalent of £39 million in 2015.

Very old graves. Those peoples names probably haven't been spoken in a very long time. Thank you for bringing their names forward once more. Ireland has interested me most of my life and I will never get to go there so thank you for showcasing just a small portion of it. Forever green and lush...
Thanks Johnny ❤️
I can't believe that church is abandoned! The upkeep on the grounds: the grass looks beautiful, and I know my hedges, those are in perfect condition, and I love the crunchy red leaves! What a shame we don't know more. Maybe they combined attendance with another newer church but still bury there and keep it up. That wooden coffin was in beautiful condition. Thank you for the peek! That was a treat! Hope you both are doing well! Yes go get some tea or coffee! All my best! ♥️🙏
Thanks Janice, all good here thanks, it was a beautiful day but freezing cold. I loved the coffin, so beautifully made
It would be locals taking care of the place. They even raised money for headstones for others in cemetery by the looks of it. It would a lovely place to live 👍🏾
That coffin in the castle mausoleum was in remarkable condition. Quite amazing!
It was and very beautifully made too
The church is beautiful and such lovely surroundings. The castle mausoleum is so amazing too. Thank you Sue!
Thanks Pamela ❤️
What a gem of a church yard. So many interesting graves. Looks like a lovely community they had and all neat and tidy. Bell is a lovely name. Hope you got warmed up with a lovely cup of coffee. Hats and gloves to the ready. Thick socks too. God Bless❤
Thank you, heaters were on and we soo got toasty warm again
That was amazing all of those old gravestones. Thank you for braving the cold weather for us.
You're most welcome 🙏
Interesting graveyard. Thanks for braving the cold to show it to us 😊
Thanks Mary ❤️
Wow, it’s so lovely to that someone visited these graves so there not forgotten forever
Thanks, yes now we have remembered them, it's a joy to remember them
It's so sad that Church is abandoned. Imagine going to Sunday services in that setting. Great video again as always Sue!!
It is Sad, what a waste but I keep seeing this over and over again
Right! Just gorgeous. Like our Sue 😊
I was wondering if they still have funerals at the old church.
Excellent as always Sue ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you kindly
That is a beautiful church, sad that it is abandoned, nice headstones. Love the Celtic cross. Nice walk Sue. Hooe you got to warm up some.
Thanks Becki ❤️
Thank you for another fine video!
My grandmother's sister died of Bright's Disease. It was kidney failure, i remember my grandmother saying, she had terrible fluid retention. She died very young, around 1920. I haven't heard anyone mention Bright's Disease in many years.
I'd never heard of it until I googled it and found out it was kidney failure, fortunately medicine has improved.
My grandma on my mother's side had Brights disease.
Such a beautiful tour Sue. Love those old graves and mausoleums.
Thanks so much toms ❤️❤️
Thanks for the tour...Life is not a Rehearsal...Pursue your Dreams...
I love this, so very true ❤️
Wow ,a stunning place ,love it ❤️
Thanks Marie ❤️
Beautiful as usual. I love old churches and cemeteries. How sad that the church is abandoned. I remember growing up in the 60/70’s, my father had us in Church every Sunday. Big family, almost taking up one entire row. Even when we’d go camping, Sunday morning meant Church, before packing up,to go home. I remember the front of the Church had a wall to wall almost floor to ceiling window and the view was so amazing, made it hard to concentrate on the mass. ❤️🙏❤️
I was the same, every Sunday, mass, no matter what
That was beautiful. Thanks for taking us along with you guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a beautiful old church and graveyard. Thank you, Sue; your videos are so interesting and informative! ❤
Thanks Janet
You should try a snake/inspection camera to get into those tight areas, would allow you to show a lot more. You have an interesting channel and enjoy seeing the old sites. Thanks!
I have one and it's not great, until you have lots of light
What a beautiful church...
It is, shame its abandoned
I would LOVE to see the inside!!!
Beautiful as Always Sue
Thanks John ❤️
This is incredible! Thanks for finding this and bringing it to us
You're welcome 😊
What a beautiful resting place. Thank you Sue!
You are so welcome! ❤️
Beautiful church and grounds. It is so peaceful. Thank you Sue and GV again for the videos. God bless you
Kathy
Thanks Kathy ❤️
@Serenity Sue You'll be glad to know that William Wellington Bailey was not a slave owner. Slavery was abolished in Ceylon in 1844. In Malaya the British were instrumental in having slavery abolished where in fact, owning slaves was a matter of prestige and an indication of the wealth of Malay chiefs. Consequently, they didn't take kindly to British intentions of stopping slavery and several British officials were murdered by them before it was finally abolished.
Well that's great to hear, when you hear they owned plantations you'd always wonder..but you've cleared that up now, thanks a million
Great video sue,GV,safe travels god bless good health to you all from ballarat in Oz,🙏🙏👋👋👍🇦🇺
Thanks Peter ❤️
This is quite amazing. Someone stays close to the place to keep it trimmed and clean. The church is still in great shape. Enjoyed this video , ty. Tc and stay safe always and stay warm.
Thanks a million 😊
Hello from Fort Worth Texas. I love your channel. 🤠
Hello and thanks a million ❤️💗
I'm up the street in Decatur
@@triciaselman9215 Hello Decatur ! 🥰
I’m a bit South in Pflugerville. I Love this channel. My family is originally from Ireland. County Leitrim?? Spelling?. Booth family moved to Canada with the Potato Famine, someday I will get to visit. I’m 65 so hopefully I can go soon. I’m married to an Archeologist and that will be helpful. We visit cemeteries here in Texas every weekend but they are nothing like these lovely places. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@laurelldockall2399 So nice to see many Texans take a interest in Ireland. I'm not Irish but I love learning about this wonderful country. Irish people have been US Presidents, Canadian Prime ministers. The Mexican Cinco de Mayo story has a Irish link also.
This is such a well-done and respectful video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you ❤️
I agree.
Hello Sue that was a butiful old church it makes me happy to know there's people out there like you that kipps the desist alive by telling there life . God bless you and your family peace be with yaw ❤
Cheers Denny
Always love y’all stories💯💯💯💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

It looks well maintained looks lovely there, great church
Thanks Hazel ❤️
That was beautiful, cheers Sue…
Cheers Eddie
Hi Sue, Iam Darren from Australia and I just wanted to thank you for your amazing videos and the history behind them.... You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful country, I also love the accent it brings back many fond memories.... I was an on-site construction manager and worked in very desolate places in the Australian outback.... A few of the young lads working for me were from Ireland and some of the hardest workers I had, the only thing was they work hard and play hard 😂 They love to drink and fight no surprise when you working in desert like conditions 7 days a week for months at a time, I was good with that as long as they were at the work truck at 5.30 am to go to work in the morning..... Those boys never missed a day, I miss them a lot hard working hard drinking and very respectful.... They made living in the desert actually fun with loads of laughs and bonding..... Sorry to rave on 😂 Cheers Darren...
Thanks Darren, yes we work hard, play hard lol although I don't drink myself and prefer to relax then suffer a hangover for days. It's good to hear you talk about the young Irish men. ❤️
What wonderful memories!
Fascinating! Much appreciation for your Irish graveyard , from Massachusetts!
Glad you enjoyed it ❤️
So beautiful.....cemeteries and the grounds are sacred to God...Just something I believe in ,,,,always have.
That's lovely, never thought of it that way
The graveyard is so beautiful! The mausoleums were incredible. It’s the 1st time I’d seen an actual coffin. We don’t use them much here. If the church is abandoned the graveyard is really kept up.
Oh you should look on my channel, I found one mausoleum full of the most beautiful coffins
Before I began watching, I wasn't aware of the "Old World" having such a widespread use of the lead liners within the traditional wood. Makes one wonder how many past craftsmen had prematurely helped themselves into their own creations, via lead poisoning over their many active years.
@@LarsonPetty Good question. I know it helps preserve the body. That’s why they do it. Queen Elephant coffin was lead lined. The radium girls were buried in lead lined caskets because of radiation. This sounds like a good to look up. I’m curious home often lead poisoning occurred.
@@gregdiamond6023 I've always been sort of fascinated by the things of our past that we now know as being extremely dangerous, but to our forebears were "Just another Tuesday morning". It makes me wonder what thing(s) we currently view as a normal parts of our lives that might later be discovered to be as toxic as lead and thallium. Things that future generations might look back upon us and say: "Damn! What the hell were they thinking?!?!"
@@LarsonPetty I’ve been fascinated by that sort of thing too. Like using arsenic to make women’s hats or doctors poisoning patients with mercury.
Very interesting Sue, and thank you so much for sharing that beautiful cemetery, thank you.
My pleasure! Joel
Fascinating video 👍 unbelievable that they've been there for hundreds of years, out in the elements yet so well preserved. Thanks for posting. Very interesting x
Glad you enjoyed it

Beautiful well kept grave yard! So interesting. It is sad to see the young ones and the word “hanged” on that grave. That wood coffin was in great shape for being so old! Beautiful cold crisp day🥶. Your hands were so red! Many thanks for this great tour!!
Thanks Liz, ahh the feet were so cold lol those wellies have no insolation 🤣
@@SerenitySueGraveyards got to wear thermal socks😂💕

It always makes me sad to see an abandoned church.
What a beautiful day Sue! I always enjoy your walks. ❤❤❤

Thank you for this information and photos of that gorgeous church and the beautiful old graves and that very tragic hanging of Michael ❤❤ I enjoyed all very much❤❤

Great video Sue! Beautiful church, landscape & a well kept cemetery! Wish we could see the inside of the church.

Gorgeous fall colours in this churchyard, Sue ❤
It was stunning here
Wonderful video!!!
Thank you very much!
I hope the church don't be abandoned too long now. It's beautiful and thank you for sharing with us in this video. Hopefully the headstones can be restored carefully so we all can see clearly the names again.
Once abandoned unfortunately it stays that way, unless they can turn it into a centre or meeting house
Beautiful scenery
Thank you Sue, love Ireland and everything about it!! Your accent is so refreshing! Love from Buffalo NY, USA 🇺🇸
Thank you so much!
So stunning that church is beatiful
Thank you ❤️
Beautiful old church and graveyard. The mausoleums were very interesting. Even though the church is abandoned, it looks like someone is taking care of it and the grounds. I am no expert, but were those bones in that mausoleum too big to be human?
Thank you very much for braving the cold Sue and GV, this was a great walking tour. Have a great weekend. 😊
Thanks Michael, I think they were thigh bones from a human
Oh OK, thank you very much for getting back to me. Take care.
Always love the journey sue
lots of luv from Edmonton ,Alberta Cananda
Thanks so much ❤️
Not getting notifications for reasons only known to RUclips! What a find Sue. Those bones probably came from a lower coffin, the top one still looks sealed, and so many legible 1700s' markers to read. Nice to see you in the welly boots, lol. Hope you warmed up, we're expecting a top of 44c tomorrow,🥵. Thanks for making the long trip to share this one guys, take care. Deb of Oz XXX
Thanks Deb, youtube is being unfair and only getting worse, oh the wellies have come out lol, oh no that's too hot 🥵 the bones must be from the lower coffin, I just couldn't get a look in there
Another beautiful area. I hope you two have a cup of hot chocolate when you get home. ☕☕
Got a coffee on the way, thank you
What a shame that beautiful church isn't being used😪 That coffin was amazing! But I wonder why those 2 bones were out? Boots and thick socks. I get the socks in the hunting section at walmart. Great place and video🙂 Stay warm❤️
Thanks Brenda ❤️
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks very well taken care of
Beautiful countryside there.
It was and that blue sky was stunning
Such a well kept churchyard.
It might be the church is just used occasionally rather than always. It is sad to think it’s sitting there empty though. But this is one of the nicest cemeteries I have seen for how well it’s kept…Love n Light to you both 🥰
Thanks Christine ❤️
A mausoleum with an open door. What to do? Enjoyed another great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Breathtaking church. Always enjoy your uploads. I thank you.
Thank you so much 💓
Thanks again sue appreciate what you do
That means a lot
Very beautiful church
It is, shame its left abandoned
Another great video, Sue. Thank you. Stay warm.
Thanks so much ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards my pleasure!
Some very old and interesting tombs there. Lovely church and sad it's abandoned. The writing on the older tombs is beautiful. Do ever do grave rubbings Sue ? Thank you very much for taking us there on such a very cold day. I hope you both didn't catch colds. I used to love the winter and being cold. Snuggling up in slippers and warm dressing gown. Now I'm growing older and have aches and pains so I don't like winter at all. Sue please take care and thank you so much 💖💖💐💐☕☕🍪🍪☀
I love a bright crisp day but I hear you on the aches and pains, it's not joke..I've never done grave rubbings but have seen them done, although they are so beautiful when completed I do worry if it might hurt a stone that's fragile
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Sue I've never thought about how rubbings could cause damage. I'm glad you said that. You take care and keep warm.
love to you and yours 💖💖💐💐🏆
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Beautiful area and graveyard. Really impressive looking church. Cool mausoleum! I wonder where those random
bones came from?
I'm not sure Don, either from a coffin underneath this one or from the graveyard, either way it's strange
It looks like scatches on the inside of the door!love the castle mausoleum
We have a few people here in America that go and they clean those old headstones without using abrasive chemicals. I don't know if they allow it there, but it may save those headstones from decaying and give people a chance to record them. I like that you recorded that old coffin now at least there's pictures of it it was made beautifully. Do they still have funerals at the old church.
Unfortunately we need permission from family to touch headstones and if no family left you have to prove it which is very hard to do. I'd imagine there's no sermons here anymore
Sue, last night I eat two hambers and whole pizza. Now I can't move. Decided to catch up on your videos. 🤢 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀
Oh no!
One degree?? 😳. Come here to Florida and warm up!!! God bless you both for braving that cold!!

Hi Tina
Thanks for going out in the freezing weather Sue..I dunno what’s worse 0 degrees or 42 tomorrow where I am in Australia 😵💫
I'll take the cold any day over that heat 🥵
Hey sue! Thanks for the content! Just a thought and a comment.
Let your subscribers know that RUclips, for some reason, is bumping subscribers from your channel and they become unsubscribed! I had to resubscribe to you and many others!
Also, as I am in the U.S., can you show on a map where you are visiting when u post….it would make it easier for at least me to follow and possibly add to my travels when I get to the UK.? Thanks again for your channel!
Thanks, yes youtube is a pain right now, I have explained this before and reported this to youtube. Thanks x
Thank you for the tour of the lovely cemetery and church. My guess as to where the bones came from. He had family buried in the ground behind the mausoleum. Sometimes caskets rot, collapse and bones will work their way to the surface. Maybe they put them in the mausoleum for safekeeping instead of further disturbing a grave.
That's a good guess too. Probably the right one
I did notice that the bone was cut. I wonder how that happened. Here in America in the older cemeteries they poke a steel rod into the ground and if nothing stops it's travel down, they re-sale the grave and dig it up for the new dead. I was really shocked. They also have a law in place in Pennsylvania that if there hasn't been a burial in the cemetery for 20 years the land can be sold, and the graves dug up. A church can do the same to create more space in the graveyard. So much for expecting to rest in peace. I've seen the coffins loaded onto trucks (after sitting on the side of the road for two weeks) as they riffled through them for mementoes and whisked off to God knows where. This is the truth as God is my witness. Loved your video BTW. Wish they were taping these in Herefordshire and Shropshire.
Pretty graveyard and interesting headstones and mausoleums
Thank you
Love your videos!
Thank you!
Great Video sue and Gentlemen, God bless
Thank you kindly, God Bless
Rest in Peace Michael Conway& his relatives🙏🏼
There are some very old Graves in the Hudson Iowa Cemetery in Hudson Iowa near Waterloo Iowa.
So sad with so many abandoned/derelict churches. Fascinating seeing the vaults & mausoleums amongst the headstones & unmarked graves. Sadly, such buildings are confined to major cities such as London where the wealth lay in the 18/19th century.👍😉
Yes, it's always wonderful to see a good mixture
You can have some of our heat. It's supposed to be 40+oC here tomorrow. I'm in Australia 😉💚🕶👙🏖
No thanks, I couldn't cope with that heat
Near 4:56 on the video time with mention of Thomas' grave, you said his name and quoted as having "DL" After last name, which I have just learned means a 'DEPUTY Lieutenant' in older years in British societies military appointments. Greetings from USA, learning some of your history in a fascinating genre for sure. ❤
Thank you ❤️
Very interesting this Sue thank you for braving the weather it really is cold I am freezing now and I had the heating on!. I wonder why there was a bone at the side of that coffin very weird!. It's a beautiful church and grounds. Thank you hope you are both doing well?!
All good here Jules, we warmed up nicely in the car, yes it's strange about the bones
Such a beautiful peaceful place..it's been well kept ❤your channel is awesome ❤
Thank you so much! 💓
Greetings from Poteet Texas.🎉
Hey Gary
I don’t think a mausoleum is the way to go. This is very depressing how they are left to deteriorate over the years. Can you imagine how beautiful everything was when it was first built.
Oh I can, I always image what they looked like years ago
