My great great grandmother is buried in that cemetery the avatar on her stone reads a faithful servant for 44 years and her name . The family she worked for from the age of 13 really Treated her with the upmost respect which for the day was quite the rarity and the story is still passed down through my family to this day . They paid for her funeral and stone and insisted she had one of the best resting places in the cemetery which was fairly new at the time . I’ve only made the Journey twice in my lifetime to visit her resting place .

Now that is interesting, wish I'd found her, yes it's rare to see a servant treated with love and respect, I've found a few similar to your great, great grandmother and it's so beautiful to see and read.

Beautiful cemetery. Poor Edward. Wonder what caused his casket to collapse like that. I remember my great-grandmother telling us of a neighbor lady who passed. The doctor who had checked her while she was in a coma couldn't hear her heartbeat and pronounced her dead. They were having her wake and they had to put her on ice due to the hot Texas summer. While someone was sitting with her, she sat up and said that she was freezing. This caused the person sitting with her to scream and the others went in and she was very much alive. My grandmama said the lady lived for a few more years. That is probably why a lot of people were scared to be buried alive. Thanks for sharing Sue!

Embalming stopped the fear of being buried alive. Once the body is embalmed, there’s no coming back. But before embalming, there were stories & indeed the fear of being buried alive.

Big cemetary, old graves, all their loved ones are gone. Alot of history with doctors going back to Queen Victoria, whether a Mausaleum or a field rock, we all end up dead.😮 you caught a quick picture of the fox, I saw it. It looked like a red fox and had a white tip tail. Thanx for a great tour❤😊

@@SerenitySueGraveyards In Barbados, Caribbean/West Indies, there is a vault called ''The Chase Vault'. When this vault owned by wealthy landowner Colonel Thomas Chase, was opened in 1812, the coffins were scattered and in disarray ( coffins were intact and closed). Four years later and the following year, the same thing happened even though the coffins were always rearranged and the vault sealed. Even after the Governor in 1819 put his seal in the concrete sealing the vault, a year later when it was opened, the coffins were in disarray. The family decided then to bury the coffins separately. I find it strange that many of the mausoleums have only a family name or one name but have many coffins inside. No way to know who actually rests there. The same with the numbered doors. Who rests there? So many huge & beautiful monuments. They must have been so costly. Today you only see a very few of large & costly markers. I wonder if it is the cost of them or have tastes & funeral customs changed over the years. I enjoyed seeing this cemetery. The size of it is amazing. A very lovely final resting place❤

@@SerenitySueGraveyards I really appreciated the tomb of the lady and the bell.
It really reminded me of a tomb in Buras, Louisiana. Back in the old days they actually buried a pregnant woman alive.
I don't know why. She must have had a very shallow heartbeat.
But after she was buried, she woke up and delivered a set of twins.
When someone went to the tomb, they noticed what looked like blood coming from the inside. I guess they opened it to try to find out why. Apparently, she gave birth and she had one baby on her chest and then other beside her around waist level. They said that she had pulled all of her hair out and had turned completely around.
The last time I saw her grave in the early 2000's.
My sweet son is also buried in a mausoleum in a neighboring town.
If you look at a map of the United States, Buras is about 60 miles south of New Orleans along the Mississippi River.
A lot of tombs and graves were destroyed years ago by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
After the storm, before the authorities allowed people to go back to assess the damage.
A lot of the tombs and graves were broken open and the contents were all over the place. They found a lot of well dressed people in the trees and such.

Sue, remember Gay Byrne always saying "You can roll it there, Colette"? As I'm watching, I keep saying 'Steadt the gimble. Sue." I only said it a couple of times watching this one.

Just curious? Why are the tombs above ground? I lived in New Orleans for a while, and they do that there also, only because the water table is so high when there's a storm the water level rises very quickly and will push the coffins up and out of the ground.

My father had two first cousins, sisters, who were afraid of being buried alive. One died in 2003 and opted to be cremated. Do lead coffins stay intact or do they deteriorate in time?

Such an incredible waste of money surrounding bodies that waste away to dust. Souls leave their earthly bodies and move along to heavenly places. We will all be together again.

I had never heard of Mt. Jerome before. I usually equate Glasnevin and the graves of Daniel O’Connell and Michael Collins as the Dublin house of the dead.
As usual, you piqued my interest in history. Maria, Countess de Lusi, married Count Frederick de Lusi and as she lived to a great age for the time (81) and so became a dowager countess.

Victorian era tombstones and grave markers certainly had a specific type of charm didn't they? The Memento Mori thing was almost always present, usually in the form of a skill or other dark imagery, like the Grim reaper and his scythe. Instantly identifiable from a distance as being from the 1800s.

In Europe, it's wonderful that you can peek inside crypts, vaults and mausoleums to see the actual coffins resting inside, that's not the case in the US😞American cemeteries require people to cover the crypts with a granite or marble slab🤷‍♀It's interesting to see the coffins because they vary greatly in style and form, depending on the craftsmanship and era, for ex it would be super amazing to see the cast-iron Fisk metallic burial cases of 1850s which were invented by Almond Dunbar Fisk of New York
