The Series X is an amazing console. Gamepass has made it very easy for me to play games I missed out on during previous generations. Shame their BC quest has come to an end.
Shame about BC quest ending but still, kudos to MS for actually doing something, thanks to this I played many 360 games on XOne (and will continue to play on soon to be Xbox Series X)
Too true. I have the series s but loving being able to get Xbox one 360 and original games downloaded and being able to play them when I missed out totally before (I was a PlayStation player)
While we shouldn't expect anything, the latest BC update was also after Microsoft said it was the last update. Again, don't expect a new update, just keep in mind that it isn't completely impossible.
Never would I have EVER imagined that a Xbox would become one of my favorite consoles. It's crazy to see how far Xbox has come since the 2013 Xbox One fiasco.
I was a Playstation boi back in the day, but now with so many of their games that I actually care for being available on Xbox (FF and Kingdom Hearts for example), and their blatant lack of care for backwards compatibility, I've shifted over to Xbox's side. Only Playstation's I'm still keeping around are my PS2 and PSP.
Backwards compatibility is one of the reasons why I’m considering getting a Series X. Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite games of all time and with how 2 ends it would be great to jump back to the original after finishing it and seeing the story as a whole.
I’ve own both the PS5 and Series X since launch and I can say with zero thought that my Series X is used significantly more than my PS5. The one two punch of backwards compat. and Game Pass just make it the gamers system. Sure, PS5 has some cool things here and there but for consistent gaming needs, Xbox got you covered.
Ngl, the backwards compatibility perks was one of the main reasons I got my Series X, particularly for games like Sonic Unleashed. That and GamePass is just an incredible catalogue.
The big reason I got a series x was because of the backwards compatibility. I usually don't care for the best graphics, but to be able to easily play my older games and with improvements made it a easy buy.
So you spent $500 on a new-gen console while not caring for graphics or even new games, but to play old games you could already have played on 8th-gen systems or on PC with even *better* additions and features? WAT?!?
@@samalton5837 I didn't say I'm not getting new games and besides I don't have a Xbox One just a original xbox and a 360, so xbox one games are new to me as well.
The backwards compatibility feature is one of my favorite aspects of the Xbox consoles. Even though I'm sad they aren't continuing it anymore it's nice that all my 360 and original Xbox games I collected over the years work so seamless on the system. It makes me appreciate Microsoft's focus on making the Xbox family consoles so great.
I have a decent PS4 library but no longer had access to a console so the backwards compatibility made the PS5 feel like an essential buy. I can’t begin to imagine how much OG Xbox users appreciate the shift to support older games!
I love seeing Jon talk about the retro/homebrew capabilities of overlooked gaming hardware. The PlayStation video recently was awesome, and this is great too. Would love to see more of these.
I wish I had the time and focus to play old and new games. I've accepted that I'll never get caught up on either, so instead I just play whatever is most compelling and accessible at the time. In a way it's fun because it means all our libraries look a bit different! Except Jon....he's played everything ever.
This feature of the Xbox One/Series X is probably the number one reason I play Xbox more than PS5. I’ve been hunting down “disc only’ 360 games and it’s been glorious. I know eventually my PS5 will get some use but for now? I’m making a serious dent in my backlog without having to having multiple generations of consoles plugged into my TV. It’s been fantastic.
I do too but Microsoft makes it very hard to even get hyped for one. After the 2015 license drop I thought we wouldn't but want one. Microsoft has 1 on BC/Gamepass but ignores 2 like they did when Halo 2 released days/1 week before Blinx 2. So I don't know what to expect of Microsoft caring or not for the license. Artoon did make something special back then but they died and for me their successor company is the support studio for Balan and developed Yoshi's New Island on 3DS so.... Either way if they want more family friendly games Psychonauts 2 was a start but I doubt they care to make others or interest fans that want Blinx or Jet Set Radio or something and don't own a current Xbox but want/own an OG Xbox for just those.
Not only that, but, for just $20, you can access dev mode on Series S&X and turn it into an emulation BEAST. Series X can play Wii, GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn, PSP, etc. games to near perfection. With emulators in dev mode, backwards compatibility, & Game Pass, the Series S&X can play WAY more games than the Switch & PS5 combined.

I've heard a rumour that Jet Set Radio Future didn't make the cut for backwards compatiblity due music licensing. One of the composers said no for some reason and killed it being backwards compatible. If it's true, that is a real shame.
I've gotta be honest, I had no idea at all that the Series X backwards compatibility was this good. This video has literally made me want to get one to revisit some of my original Xbox and 360 collection. I really wish that PlayStation put more effort into this too, imagine being able to play PS1 and 2 games upscaled to 4K directly from the disc. Still, it's awesome that Xbox is out here fighting the good fight! It's very sad that they aren't continuing to support the backwards compatibility though :(
They still offer free Xbox 360 and sometimes Original Xbox titles. And every time I get one it just feels good to play older games again on a modern console. It's even better when they will add all the COD games that were released on the 360 to Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft has set the standard on how console manufacturers should treat their back catalogs. Unfortunately it seems to be a standard that no one else has decided to follow.
Sony's standard via PS3 is still THE best one; actual hardware emulation for old systems with hardware-boosted subtle benefits. Unfortunately they had to break from that with PS4 due to PS3's complicated hardware, and probably won't go back to local hardware-based emulation until PS6 (for PS3 & earlier PS systems). And, technically Sony's old approach came from Sega because the Genesis had hardware BC for Master System with an add-on module. MS's method has been hamstrung by limitations of both software emulation and licensing restrictions, that's why they stopped supporting 360 BC the way they did.
@@samalton5837 PS3 may be the best in terms of accuracy and compatibility, but it doesn’t let you increase frame rates and resolution they way MS’s solution does. I think there are pros and cons to both.

It's honestly a really big shame that the only way to play jetset radio future is on the original hardware. The original is on steam but there were a bunch of improvements between games
I grew up with PS1 and then PS2 later. I didn't have much space for consoles so the PS2 playing everything the PS1 could, plus acting as a DVD player, was a HUGE deal to me. So the PS3 and PS4 consoles ignoring backwards compability just made me not interested int he consoles. There wasn't much on them that I couldn't get on PC, and I didn't want to have to swap consoles around depending on what I was in the mood to play. I got the Xbox One much later, mainly 'cause my PC was starting to slow down on newer games, and I wasn't even aware of its backwards compability at the time, but over the years I got so much more mileage out of it than I expected I would. Especially with the Sonic series. When PS5 and Series X were announced, there was no question which I would go with. I could put away the One and lose literally nothing (don't have any Kinnect games anyway). I knew it was gonna be more powerful but holy smokes I did not understand just HOW much more powerful it was gonna be. I really do hope Microsoft continues this trend of ensuring future consoles don't abandon the games of the past. It's sad their backward compability programme is now ended, I bought a 360 recently just to play some games that aren't BC with One/Series X (mainly Sonic 06). And while doing games individually might have been slower, it was definitely the better option. Some Xbox games don't play optimally on the 360 - Shadow the Hedgehog even has a risk of crashing during some cutscenes, sadly. I only just got FFXIII recently and am playing through it now, didn't realise it was the definitive version so that's good to know XD
I wish the Series X would add an emulator tool so it can dump the ROMs directly from discs into the console. Maybe even add the option to survey so if enough people dump an old game thanks to some big famous Streamer they could try getting it in the Store/Gamepass & get some extra money
This is why I buy as many games as I can on Xbox. They have earned the trust that they will be playable on their next console and probably the one after that. And they very well might even enhance them!
hey important question: i dont have either system, but i know the xbox one and series x have a 640x480 mode, so do 360 games (that support it) output in 4:3 when you set it to that? also why wasnt the widescreen for panzer orta turned on for the og xbox? lol it just seems random compared to the series x play which did
Games that have no Widescreen option default to 4:3, so theye never get streteched out, but all games default to max resolution for everygame meaning that most 360 games will be on 720p upscaled, but games that received Xbox One X enhancements will be in 4K which are a handfull of 360 games and all OG Xbox games, bear in mind that Xbox Series X/S can access said enhancements but the Series S maxes at 1440p, but you do get FPS boost on Series S vs an Xbox One X, and if you have an Xbox Seres X, you'll both 4K and FPS boost meaning that games that the handfull of games that were given the FPS boost (only handfull have beem given FPS so far) will have their FPS doubled from 30 to 60m or 60 to 120.
@@Kenhawk98 that WOULD be interesting! unlike og xbox games, the aspect ratio switching was done to the consoles internal system as a whole instead of being inside the games options, so the series x menu would likely be where this is stored. do you have a one or series x? if so, you might the the first person to ever record that!
I seriously hope that Sonic ‘06 will be playable on Series X/S someday. The infamous load times of the game would immediately be fixed with the Series X.

I was just about to head off and play Yakuza 4 but Good Vibes Gaming uploaded a Jon video so priorities, i'll continue that after i've watched :)
@@Kenhawk98 ok cool but can XBOX THREE SIXTY games with 4:3 be played in 4:3?
@@Spacething7474 I think you can change that on the menu of the game itself, though most 360 are in widescreen.
I recently upgraded from Xbox One to a Series S and Saints Row 2 finally runs well.
15:14 haha! Sneeky pegging.
I love this man
I seriously hope that Sonic ‘06 will be playable on Series X/S someday. The infamous load times of the game would immediately be fixed with the Series X.
First RDR on PC right now. Times change.
seriously, what's up with Blinx 2, Jet Set Radio Future, and Sonic Heroes?
and Outrun 2?!
