SEMANTIC STUDY OF LA ROCHEFOUCAULD AND LA FORMULE DOCUMENTS
    Olivier Schmitt
    7 Jan 2021
All dictionary references sources are from www.cnrtl.fr which is the site of the CNRS (National Scientific Research center), who compiled all known old French dictionaries in this online database. If you want to use it, here is an example with the word “Anse”:
    www.cnrtl.fr/definition/anse
Just change “Anse” for any query you need.
    Introduction
I’m hereafter assessing the date at which the first known reference for the word is certified by the CNRS. I’m letting off trivia words and concentrating on the most appealing to me. My ultimate goal is to date the time at which these words were written based on their chronological context.
La Rochefoucauld Map - Bottom text
    MILLE
I personally don’t believe un mille trois cent quarante sept is a date on this map. Why ? because the word “un”. In French, when you express a date, you don’t use an article, and specifically not “Un”. On the opposite “un mille” is one mile. No other meaning possible.
I needed to check that the modern word “Mile” spelled the same in French and English did exist under the form “Mille” long time ago. It is the case, since 1213 : Étymol. et Hist. 1. 1213 «mesure itinéraire de mille pas chez les anciens Romains». Interesting, this is defined as one thousand steps in Roman time….
    www.cnrtl.fr/definition/mille
    INDIEN
When did the French start to use the word Indien to describe native Americans?
1588 for Amerindien, and 1721 for the short contraction Indien
    www.cnrtl.fr/definition/Indien
La Rochefoucauld Map - Top right corner text
    DESSIN
to CNRS, the word Dessin under this spelling for only appeared in….. 1680 !
I doubed this until I read: 1680 dessin (Rich. : Quelques modernes écrivent le mot de dessein [t. de peint.] sans e après les deux s, mais on ne les doit pas imiter en cela).
Let me translate this bit: Richelieu wrote : “some modern people write dessin without “e” after the 2 “s”, we should not imitate them”. So Richelieu (1585 - 1642) , was saying I heard some crazy people wrote dessin this way but it shouldn’t be. The official registered date for this spelling is 1680, but could have appeared in common language of some artists as early as 1605.
The former spelling was dessein, in use since 1529.
    VERRE
Officially recorded since 1160 for a drinking glass
    La Rochefoucauld Map - Island
    VOUTE
Voute had the form “Volte” in 1135, “Voste” in 1526, and took is “Voute” form only since 1678.
Another surprise here. If the text was written before 1678, the spelling would have been “Volte or Voste” !
    SOUPAPE
Certified in this form since 1419.
    Conclusions:
The text on this document was written after 1721, base on the INDIEN word, or 1678 based on the spelling of VOUTE.
    LAST THOUGHS:
The UN MILLE SOIXANTE CINQ PIED sentence :
If it is “MILLE SOIXANTE CINQ PIED”, it means 1065 feet
If it is « UN MILLE SOIXANTE CINQ PIED », it means 1 Mile and 65 feet. (now that I know Mile used to be spelled Mille)
If I take 1 mile from the “Atterrissage” point with is quite specific on the map, I end up with this....
Can't put puctures here but try for yourself with Googl earth. It hits 2 pints on Oak Island.....
I did the same study with La Formule if you're interested......
    Thanks for reading
    :)

Merci, Olivier. I greatly appreciate the time and effort you spent to gather and share this valuable information. It is very useful to hear from someone far more knowledgeable on French. What you found confirms the suspicions I had about the words on the map. The conclusion that map, if authentic, was was likely composed after 1721 fits with all of the verified artifacts on Oak Island. And yes, I am interested in what you found regarding La Formule.

    • @oakislandresearch
      @oakislandresearch 3 года назад

      There you are :)
      La formule
      HALTE
Halt (without the “e” at the end) dates back 1566. 1636 till 1665, the spelling changed to Alte.
The final Halte form only appeared in 1694
      TERRER
I was surprised to learn that “terrer” does not mean to dig. It is the absolute contrary, as it means to fill a void. The striking definition I found “Combler une cavité du sol en y faisant couler une eau qui y dépose la terre qu'elle chasse », translates into « to fill a void in the ground by pouring water that will flush the present soil”. Striking as this is in perfect match with the money pit water trap.
I could translate the first words by : ”STOP, do not flush the bottom with water”, which add tremendous context !
The date at which we can find the first records of TERRER is 1180 (an old word)
      ATTEINTE (literally “Reach”)
Here again, I did not know the word had slightly different meaning in old times. It can mean to reach one’s objectives, back in 1285. Ca 1295 : venir à son atteinte « parvenir à ses fins ».
« Porter atteinte » mean to hit something or someone in the 15th century.
“Hors d’atteinte” means out of reach back in the 17th century, and still today.
      DEGRE
So we knew degre is currently a measure of trigonometry. But between 1050 and roughly 1750, we were using this word to describe a “STEP” on a staircase.
      CREUSER
Creuser exists sin 1172, no issue here.
      HAMPE
Hampe meant in 1471 and still means a wooden stick or rod that is found on military pikes. Not a shaft, not a hole, no a digging related word, I think/
It can also describe a connector between letters in calligraphy. When, in hand writing, you connect a t and n for instance, the little dash connecting the 2 letters is a Hampe.
It can finally be a lever (wooden rod), which could put new light to the La formule statement, combining with the other Degre meaning I found: Arrived after 45 steps at a certain point, move the lever by 500 something

Si l'auteur du dessin est anglais, ce qu'il me semble bien dû à certaines erreurs de français, il se peut qu'il aurait traduit "ONE thousand" to "UN mille"
Pour moi ce n'est pas une date, et puisque nous parlons d'aterrissement, c'est plutôt une mesure, et effectivement il existe une mesure "um mille".
"Mille" pourait aussi être la traduction de l'anglais "miles", toujours dans le cas, comme je le pense, òu l'auteur serait anglais.

That was well spotted and thankyou for posting this, it would make sense if treasure was buried in places other than Oak Island as it would keep treasure hunters off the trail of where the treasure is buried.
The number on the map makes sense for a location point and the Curse of Frog Island sounds more scary than the Curse of Oak Island lolz.

Thanks and you're welcome. I'm not offering any theories, but it's interesting how they seldom mention Frog Island on the show. They did do some work on Apple Island, where the map says not to go, and they've done more work than is shown on the show. That's my complaint: the increasing dishonesty.

I was intrigued by the title of your video and watched this as well as your other Oak Island related video you composed and posted . Whilst I agree with your idea that the show shouldn't be treated as a documentary or as factual I think that it has been lying to the viewers for years ,rather than shading the truth . In your example I believe that the map's provenance is highly suspect or missing and you were right to preface that fact before your translation of the number on it . The Curse of Oak Island never mentions how dubious the map's origins are so the casual or first time viewer sees it as a genuine artefact . There are too many lies of omission in the show to mention them all but I do get annoyed when the recent ringbolt was found and Carmen Legge stated it was from a small ship or boat . Two weeks later the narrator said it was from a large sailing ship !! My other perennial favorite is the show describing how Samuel Ball become one of the richest men in Nova Scotia !! His will is on the internet and he was certainly not a wealthy man when he died . He does have a genuinely interesting life though which leads me to a very positive experience from the show .
I started watching the Curse of Oak Island during season 3 . I had no previous interest in treasure stories but a lot of free time and cable TV . Although I came upon the show by accident , within a few weeks I had started to research the story and then other treasure hunting and metal detecting stories and shows . So I give the show credit for sparking something inside of me .
I believe that most viewers quickly catch on to the continuity issues , repetition and shading of the truth but for those with a genuine interest in the story Curse of Oak Island has unfortunately become the only was to get current news about the developments happening on the island . As you pointed out we rarely get to hear from the Fellowship of the Dig without them having to be careful what they reveal because of NDA's demanded by the production company .
I hope the benefits of the show outweigh the many frustrations and that it gives you many more leads or clues to follow up yourself . I too take what I want from the show as the story itself deserves further research . The one thing the show has proved is that something big happened on the island before 1795 .

Thank you very much for your great comment. I had read the Reader's Digest article years before so was quite excited by the show. It's interesting but the frequent red herrings and sensationalized nonsense is disappointing. I blame the production company.
But absolutely, yes, the Laginas have proven that something significant happened on Oak Island in the 17th and 18th centuries.Hopefully someday we'll be allowed to see and hear what really is going on.

Being french, I see another misinterpretation of one of the translation from french to english. Indeed, on top of the island on the island, it is said the the Angel, because it is assumed the french word looks like « la ange » except that it is not what is written. It is not La Ange (who actually shiuld be wriiten l’Ange to be proper french) but La Anse (what we see is not a G but a S. La Anse in english means the Creek !! Which here makes far more sense.

This is what happens when TV gets involved. I believe they know much more than what they are telling us. I'm sure they know all about Lidar. Flying a plane over the island with lidar would show every tunnel and other buried things.

    • @InsertPhilosophyHere
      @InsertPhilosophyHere  3 года назад

You make a great point about lidar. Expensive though. But I think the fault lies in the Laginas and Craig Tester rather than with the TV show producers. 2020 showed how those three have the very common human bias of proceeding on the basis of what they know. They know how to dig holes, so that is what they did for six years. It was years before they brought in a metal detectorist, an archaeologist, and a . The pandemic forced them to give on the Big Dig idea and shift gears. That was when they discovered archaeology in earnest and the idea of testing the water, among other things. As they progress, they are increasingly open-minded about new technologies. Maybe lidar will happen someday.

@@InsertPhilosophyHere You can use lidar without a plane to save money. It looks like a lawn mower and you just pull or push it. They could get 100 volunteers if they wanted. That's another thing...why don't they bring in 100+ people to pick away at the roads and Ball's house instead of 4? It seems they just want to stall this show as much as possible. I now believe that a treasure was there but is long gone. Don't you think they would have found one piece of silver or gold from all those holes? They even found Marty's silver dollar that he threw down into one of the holes.

    • @InsertPhilosophyHere
      @InsertPhilosophyHere  3 года назад +2

@@theborg They wisely don't invite volunteers because they are proceeding in a controlled scientific manner. I commend them for that. It is no surprise that they have found few objects of "treasure." This isn't made-for-TV "we need a happy ending each season" show. Archaeology, which is what they are doing, takes time. They are slowly piecing it together and we just need to get rid of the silly Templar nonsense and get to the truth. All of the evidence so far indicates the "treasure" was deposited in the 1680s and partially or fully recovered in the 1740s.

Frog island also has a man made swap where parts of a ship was found . It was believed to be a sort of dock for repairing ships/ loading cargo etc.
Apple island is the "dont go here with a boat" with what appears to be a gravel jetty. the rest of the shore surrounding the island is very shallow. a larger ship would be grounded, but a raft could make it to the jetty. they also found what looked like sink holes on Frog island.
It was excavated by some folks from ST FX Uni. (i believe) who reported it to be natural erosion of giant portion of limestone rock. As for the Swamp feature, I remember something along the lines , they were stuck on something of it being a very unusual formation and unlikely natural.

She said that where "La Volte en bas de terre" is pointing to on the French map, is where it is, and that they've been looking at "it" this whole time. The translated English version of the map that they've been looking at reads, "The Earth Vaulted Bay", which is NOT the correct translation...
