A Question of Power: Will the New Syria Turn Left or Right?
Просмотров 6221 день назад
The recent rapid turn of events in Syria has created more questions than answers. This is the time of both opportunity and danger for Syria. What happens in the near future in Syria will be a lesson for the world about either how to or how not to act politically.

There's No Such Thing as “Christian” Nationalism

The concept of “Christian” nationalism has been in the news lately. That’s understandable given how often and how much certain groups are pushing the belief that America is a Christian nation and even that it should be an exclusively Christian nation. At least, that’s what they say on their external packaging.

    Maybe the trick is caused by this, to look into space is to look into the past. So to look out there at something far away, that may no longer even be there, and obviously even if its still there, its not where it looks like it is given it took light so long to get here. And should we throw in the concept that what we are looking at is within another spinning solar system. If you pin a star on the edge of a wheel and spin it. You will see it looks like its coming toward you on one half of the wheels rotation and on the other half it looks like its moving away. Not counting our solar system is also spinning. So maybe its really a case of things are moving about out there but their direction is not always the same over time.

    That's just it. The universe is not expanding. It never had a beginning either. Not one that we've tried to explain. The problem really is man's fault. At the core for all of this is man's ego. There are somethings that man will never be able to understand and the Universe is one of them. Now I'm not a theologist or some spiritual person trying to spin a mystical story around this. I'm an atheist and duly believe that the Universe is forever. Neither do I believe in the big bang theory too. Ask any cosmologist if the big bang theory happened to pin point where. They can't and they won't.

    • @funnelvortex7722

      Honestly, an infinite and eternal cosmos is the opposite of a mystical or spiritual claim. It removes the need for a creator deity because an eternal cosmos does not require a "first causer" which provides an easy answer to the Kalam so it easily refutes the Abrahamic claim. Eastern religions might be more resilient to the infinite cosmos claim but Eastern religions typically follow cycles of creations and apocalypses that are still a lot shorter than the universe has been so far estimated to have been around. That leaves us with animistic spirituality, forms of neopaganism, spiritualism, and certain folk beliefs where creation/apocalypse stories are usually not an important aspect of them or taken as literal canon since they often don't concern themselves with the greater cosmos, however these views are the tiny minority when it comes to worldwide religious belief and to the vast majority of the world an infinite/eternal universe with no creations/apocalypses is a heretical claim. So an eternal/infinite universe is definitely not a religious or spiritual claim. Religious cosmology usually claims the universe is far younger than what the current scientific paradigm claims it is, and in many cases claim it's younger than the empirically estimated age for the Earth (which is 4-5 billion years). If the universe is truly infinite and eternal then we have to rethink all our metaphysical ideas about the cosmos in general.

    I seem to be towards the romantic type who always loved Christmas and Valentine's Day (although we celebrate both a bit differently here in Japan, and my wife and I don't treat it like such a commercial Holiday -- I'm also atheist and just enjoy these in terms of cultural traditions and rituals and the odd type who would be as happy to celebrate Hanukkah as Christmas). I can definitely understand the argument that we should behave like this every day. Unfortunately I just don't. I'm not a well-balanced type of person. I get swept up in my work and other interests and almost to the point where I forget everything else that exists when I'm in the zone. So I tend to benefit from being snapped out of the zone repeatedly due to anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine's, Christmas, New Year's, etc., and remember that the whole reason I'm working is to support my family who are most valuable to me. I must admit that I'm rather allergic to people who absolutely loathe and complain about any Holiday. I should work on looking more open-mindedly and favorably towards them, and if they were indeed the types of people who never took their loved ones for granted, then they would become my role models. Yet in my experience, most I encounter aren't the types to cherish their loved ones on a daily basis but the types who never do so at all, and tend to veer towards very nihilistic outlooks. I am at least thoroughly allergic to those since I find nihilism to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    Coming back to this video one other thing I want to point out is how it's easier than people think for religious dogma to spread and embed itself in empirical and theoretical sciences. We all know the Big Bang was originally created from a Christian background so elements of the creation myth are in there, but there's something else too that a lot of people don't mention that I would like to mention. A lot of the young cultural and economic elite in the 1960s-1970s often went on long trips doing LSD around places like India and Tibet and would end up creating the New Age movement as a result which influenced others from high socioeconomic class to go on such "spiritual journeys" (i.e. doing drugs in a highly religious foreign society ) as well, absorbing that culture and religious bias. They would then go on to form the STEM industry and become the bulk of today's STEM elite. A lot of the "great" science fiction authors, silicon valley venture capitalists, and top physicists of the past 40 years were heavily influenced by the New Age movement and the religious beliefs of eastern cultures. On top of this they were building on top of a very Christian foundation. Because of this you get what is basically a Christian creation myth combined with Buddhist and Hindu notions of cosmology like multiverses and whatnot. You also see a lot of these religious influences in Big Tech with posthumanists like Ray Kruzweil and longtermists like Elon Musk talking about the "singulairty" (like the Christian rapture), "ascension" (Christian and Eastern influences), and even adopting beliefs like the "simulation" (Eastern influences). Also a lot of influential science fiction has been filled with such New Age religious imagery as well in one way or another. I don't think they mean to spread woo on purpose, but it simply has become a cultural aspect of the "high society behind closed gates" class and regardless of whether it's intentional or not such unempirical biases do spread to people coming into the fields. Truth is no view is 100% materialistic or empirical, religious biases abound everywhere, including cosmology (*especially* cosmology) because "we don't know" is not a satisfactory answer for the human mind. Even Einstein was influenced by his Jewish background's belief in predestination, hence why he initially rejected Quantum Mechanics.

    • @funnelvortex7722
      @funnelvortex7722 22 дня назад

      Now the game has been changing with the new generation of STEM majors. We're currently in an era where science and engineering is a lot more accessible and "open source" due to the Internet as opposed to being the exclusive realm of a socioeconomic elite like it was in prior generations. Because of that the aforementioned religious and walled-up high society/upper class biases have been gradually on the decline and likely will continue to decline. But the old guard won't give up their prestige so easily hence there's currently some resistance to new ideas. But the young crop are probably gonna end up having their own biases. An effect of the open accessibility of the sciences is that it's become deeply embedded in capitalism. The young crop are more motivated by financial opportunities and career goals so the biases of the current generation long term will likely be economical, rather than cultural, in nature. What that means for a paradigm shift is unknown, but each generation of what is known as "STEM" has it's own theme of biases: In the 1800s it was economical bias, early-mid 1900s it was Realpolitik bias, and around the 1970s onward it became a cultural bias, and now we're looping back to economical bias. But the rise of capitalism in the field might not end up being an entirely bad thing, as even though it leads to a bunch of BS cash-grab research it also means some of the younger crowd might be more eager to chase niche ideas that deviate from the standard models.

      Your analysis is on point. It is hard not to see cosmology, especially the Big Bang Theory, as anything other than a hangover from the Abrahamic religions. Similar for the "transhumanist" movement, though they are tech bros who read too much sci-fi as teenagers and didn't go much beyond that. STEM has religious cult vibes, with priest-like leaders and quasi-prophet "visionaries." As a university professor, I get the occasional STEM student, dazzled by the STEM priests and prophets and the tales of science's perfection and technologies utopian promises. These kids are at first so resistant to anything beyond STEM. Thus, my philosophy course is quite challenging to them and for most of them, very eye-opening. I worry though about the one who aren't required to take a philosophy course, and never have their cult-like conformity challenged,

    • @funnelvortex7722
      @funnelvortex7722 7 дней назад

      @@InsertPhilosophyHere You can tell how much of a cult STEM is with their obsession over cryptocurrency, NFTs, AI, and other things. I am a STEM major myself (programming) but I value philosophy as a critical thinking tool and am an artist on the side. I think I owe my critical thinking skills as for why I did not blow my life savings on bitcoin and start worshiping billionaires like Elon Musk as gods like many of my peers (and they say STEM are the smartest people on Earth, ha). There's also the hostile attitude towards "soft" sciences in STEM such as biology, ecology, and social science, and there's the notorious trend of climate change denialism among physicists and cosmologists. I consider myself left wing in my views but I have noticed a large right wing shift among STEM which honestly doesn't surprise me. Right wing ideologies come from the idea of being sure about something and being resistant to change, and when you start seeing the world and people around you as just numbers you can just use math to calculate with absolute certainty you open yourself up to that rigid mindset that leads you to many far-right ideologies. Just like the preachers of old believing they knew the will of some prime deity. I think the best thing to tell any "it's true because it's in the math" type is that the math said with absolute certainty the Earth was the center of the universe at one time. Also the current math allows for singularities and backwards time travel, which even most physicists will admit are not possible.

But then they say, that our Local group of Galaxies, and our Cluster of galaxies are moving toward The Great Attractor. So...all galaxies in every direction are not moving away from us?!?

      They say it is possible for smaller scale variations in movement, which is true, but it fits into the pattern of the astrophysicists constantly needing to fudge numbers and patch holes in order to maintain their expanding universe theory. What gets me about the persistence of the expanding universe theory is that we've always heard how the Hubble Constant has been a constant problem in physics for the past 20-30 years and if the Hubble Constant is really that much of a problem wouldn't that indicate our whole model is wrong and we need that we need to look into a new model not built around said Constant? We know there is something wrong with the theory but we keep trying to add hack solutions to "fix" it instead of considering it may be time for a new theory. A few possibilities I can think of is that the universe isn't expanding uniformly, but rather it fluctuates in a way it expands and contracts in different regions at different times and we're currently in a positive fluctuation. It could also be possible that the universe really has no "beginning" or "end", but rather the idea of the universe beginning at a dense point and eventually ending with the "heat death" is a construct of the human mind's limitations and desire for having a start and end point. It's also possible relativity plays tricks on distant observations giving us a warped image meaning the current age of the universe isn't what we currently think. But other than the Hubble Constant other things wrong with the current paradigm is the fact we've detected galaxies that are older than the estimated age of the universe itself and a lot of the distant galaxies shouldn't be visible given the speed of light. There's also the fact we haven't detected any Population III stars (ultra massive and completely lacking in heavier elements) the detection of which is crucial for the theory of the universe only being 13 billion years old. I can't say I am an expert or "know" anything, but I have always felt it was a very real possibility the universe is actually much older than what we currently think and our current cosmological model is incorrect. Of course that leads to issues an older, longer-lived universe implies like with the Fermi Paradox and other things but that seems like an easier conversation to have than physicists coming up with zany ideas we have zero evidence for like "multiverses" and string theory to patch up holes in their theories (doesn't make sense? Just slap another universe/multiverse/dimension on it and call it a day).

    • @InsertPhilosophyHere
      @InsertPhilosophyHere 28 дней назад

      Great comments, thank you. There are so many problems with the current gaggle of cosmological theories, the Hubble constant being a very significant one. I agree with your assessment that the devotees of the theory have been scrambling to patch holes in their models rather than be honest about the problems inherent to their assumptions. Like you say, they probably find it easier to think in terms of definitive beginnings and endings, buttressed by religion's narratives. Cosmology and astrophysics is dominated by continual confirmation bias that is contrary to a true scientific method.

    • @funnelvortex7722
      @funnelvortex7722 28 дней назад

      @@InsertPhilosophyHere Oh yeah the paradigm has been entrenched for a while. Stephen Hawking was the one in recent history who had the biggest chance of changing the paradigm (even if he was an expansionist) but he ended up getting put on the role of a science influencer and got the reputation of a cranky old man while his theories are dismissed as fringe and now he's getting hit with Epstein allegations postmortem. Makes me wonder how much he was really respected among his peers given how he's been undermined. Sadly I don't think the paradigm is gonna shift for a while. We're currently living in a tense culture where conspiracy theories, disinfo, and paranoia are big to the point it threatens public health and stability and in response scientists are overly protective of their institutions in the name of public safety and national interest. All understandably so. A side effect of this, however, is that any critique of the scientific establishment gets labeled as anti-science or science denial and gets chucked into the same looney bin as Flat Earthers and Quantum Mystics. So it isn't just the scientific establishment, our whole culture needs to change. The jaded, cynical culture we're living in is not at all conductive for scientific progress, and historically times of political tension and economic downturn (which cause cultural stagnation) typically aren't.

      Few surveys offer people the choice of identifying as "mixed race." Even when they do,, few choose it. For example only 3.1% so identify in the US census. www.census.gov/quickfacts/ I don't use the term "POC" because numerous people who do not identify as "white" have told me they see "POC" as a blanket term that disregards ethnic diversity and presents a false dichotomy of "white" and "nonwhite." Opinions differ, but I avoid the term for that reason.

    This is also why the right hade trans and especially nonbinary people. We make the nice neat distinction between strong powerful in charge men and soft weak submissive women break down on a foundational level. They have to slot people into neat little boxes in order to know how to control them. And those of us who inconsiderately move between boxes or insist on existing in multiple boxes at once cant be tolerated

      That's exactly correct, thank you. Everything I said about the right wing's fear of racial identities also applies to gender identities. The right-wingers can't handle difference and diversity.

    I hope you'll forgive my two cents, but I don't see this as a somewhat neutral party from Japan and unable to vote on these presidential candidates. Trump just strikes me as someone very nationalist, unfiltered, crude, and humorous, and hardly racist. I'm not a fan as I don't see his personality well-suited for diplomacy or leadership, but the criticisms of Trump seem largely unfair. For example, the backlash against the joke about Puerto Rico being a floating island of garbage was neither delivered nor endorsed by Trump as far as I can tell. It was delivered by an edgy insult comic and -- while no doubt in poor taste for a presidential rally -- it's hardly a strong indicator of Trump's views (especially when he was quick to denounce such accusations). And the joke has an environmental basis that has nothing to do with Puerto Ricans given that Puerto Rico has a serious waste disposal problem with overfilled landfills (they should adopt incineration plants in my estimate as we do here in Japan; we burn the majority of our garbage and only deposit ~10% of it into landfills given our scarcity of land). For the NABJ conference, he got so much flak for using the term, "black jobs". Yet we're talking about a former president who elected the first black American (Ben Carson) as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and it should be clear by "black jobs" that he was using a shorthand referring to declining black LFPR (labor force participation rates) as referenced by BLS without referring to the nature of the type of job. Have we lost our ability to practically infer a speaker's intentions and now require the most unambiguous language which can withstand a sound byte without any possibility of being taken out of context? I'm hopeless if so as I'm constantly second-guessing myself in this regard and have become increasingly long-winded as a result, hoping more words will clarify my intentions out of fear that fewer will result in misunderstandings. I lack deep personal investment into this presidential election, but there is a side for which I'm deeply invested in that I've also found myself outcast and labeled the widest range of horrible things by American progressives: "fascist", "alt-right", "right-winger", "incel" (I'm married), "homophobe", "transphobe", "racist", "sexist", "misogynist", "cuckservative", you name it -- simply for sharing opinions I have online such as how I find it impractical to allow transwomen who haven't even gone through HRT and sex reassignment surgery to enter women's sports and women's prisons. So I'm starting to empathize with Trump and even admire his character to some degree, since he seems far less agreeable than I am, thicker-skinned, and can roll with the punches. I tend to get into a defensive and apologetic mode which I've found to serve me poorly in the presence of progressive bullies who seem more interested in assuming my intentions rather than allowing me to clarify them. Also with English as my second language, I have difficulty navigating what is and isn't offensive in today's hyper-sensitive environment despite my attempts to be tactful (Trump definitely isn't very tactful and doesn't intend to be). For example, I received a lot of criticism for publicly using the word, "retard", but that was a word widely used when I was growing up and something I encountered in a lot of the literature I read. I apologized below the social media post I made, but my post was buried under so many comments criticizing me for using the word (and using insults clearly with malintent while I used the word humorously to tease someone who wasn't even mentally disabled), and I doubt most people even noticed or cared about my attempts to smooth things out. There is an impracticality I see in communication -- especially on a global scale and across so many different cultures and personalities -- if we assume speakers always use exactly the right, politically-correct words even among those of us who try our best to do so. As our ability to communicate with the most diverse crowds and on the largest scale grows, it seems necessary to me for people to be more reluctant to assume the intentions of the speaker, not more eager to assume as with the case of "microaggressions". Here in Japan, we have the most restricted forms of free speech among the G7 countries, but that isn't a practical problem here since all of us here in Japan know and agree upon what speech is and isn't offensive (and this hasn't changed much in decades) given the homogeneous nature of our population. Yet it seems to immediately become impractical when we're expected to know what is and isn't offensive to all people across the world on a global scale, or even within a nation as diverse as the US.

      The "joke" was delivered by someone invited to the event, whose "joke" was vetted by teh campaign, and told by someone who openly campaigns for Trump. As many people have said, this is only the latest instance of Trump and his campaign saying these things. Racism is racism.

      @@InsertPhilosophyHere Apologies for the late reply! But I don't know if you'll forgive my hesitance. I looked up the comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe, and saw some of his other material and he's just obnoxious this way with edgy racial humor across the board. I'm disappointed mostly by what I perceive to be bold assumptions without giving each other the benefit of the doubt. And I think I'm reasonably neutral as a third party not even eligible to vote in American politics. I would also say it's equally unfair to criticize Kamala as a "commie" or for her ethnic background. I'm just very disappointed by how communication works these days at the large scale. To assume the very worst of people seems to create needless conflict more than anything, and I prefer assuming the very best and being disappointed and betrayed to the opposite.

    This is a cracking introduction to a still very modern philosopher of relevance. I've been playing with the idea that western political philosophy is the about the point on the scale where one thinks it appropriate to plant one's flag between individualism and collectivism. Arendt makes such a political psychological dilemma patently obvious. Finding the right point on that scale defines our political values. In her study of Totalitarianism and The Banality of Evil, it becomes very clear how easy it is to manipulate what we would hope would be our otherwise closely guarded humanitarian values and ability to critically reason. Do not administrate a holocaust - it's evil. Such safeguards once abandoned and manipulated allows the Adolph Eichmann's of this world to hide behind the pretence of the 'innocence' of 'I was only obeying orders'.

    • @InsertPhilosophyHere
      @InsertPhilosophyHere 2 месяца назад

      Thank you and your comments are astute. My research as a philosopher mainly resolves around that scale of individualism and collectivism. I am fairly far toward the individualism side, but I'm aware that an individual is embedded in a world that dictates the environment and situation the individual is in and must respond to.

    Check out my VSL theory that all redshift is gravitational redshift. Basically if you assume no expansion and all redshift is from gravity then you get a variable speed of light, space time doesn’t warp, light bends because it travels different speeds in different gravitational fields, ie mediums. Great video, I made a top 5 reasons why the universe is not expanding and didn’t think of this one which is fantastic. Incidentally it was my least watched video and everyone thinks I’m crazy. We will know soon enough with AI

    • @InsertPhilosophyHere
      @InsertPhilosophyHere 2 месяца назад

      Gravity is one likely cause of observed redshift. I suspect it is one of multiple causes producing the phenomena that cosmologist groupthink assumed was due to motion alone. You may be interested in Glenn Borchardt's learned blog on this issue, thescientificworldview.blogspot.com/search?q=redshift&max-results=20&by-date=true. He's a proponent of the infinite universe theory, with which I am in agreement. I'll watch your video too, thanks for mentioning it.

    I watched the whole election night and there were a clear trend toward Trump. Suddenly - very late - Biden got several "portions" of 50.000 and 100.000 votes from "letter voters" in strategical states, to me it looked very suspicious.

    • @InsertPhilosophyHere
      @InsertPhilosophyHere 2 месяца назад

      It must have been the first election you ever watched, because in every single election later in the evening the largest urban precincts report their vote totals. That's because it takes longer to count a larger amount of votes. For good or for ill, large urban precincts trend more for Democratic Party candidates. As for "letter" voters (you mean mail-in ballots which are always counted last and also trend Democratic) that Trump talking point has been debunked, including in findings of facts by judges, many of whom has been appointed by Trump. I didn't vote for Biden, and wouldn't if he ran this year, but Biden did win the 2020 election beyond all doubt.

    I'm very happy that you pointed this out! I'm also a fan of Stoicism in its ancient form and particularly in the way in terms of its overlap with Buddhist ideas which are popular here in Japan. Yet I'm very annoyed about these "manosphere" types hijacking it, misinterpreting it, and also associating it so much with a very one-dimensional concept of masculinity that has almost nothing to do with ethics and everything to do with what's fashionable among frat boy types.
