You're not off the mark Angela when you say that this song feels like it is part of an entire musical performance. This album opens with the title track "The Grand Illusion" and closes on "The Grand Finale," which highlights aspects of other songs within the album such as "Come Sail Away," "Superstar," and "The Grand Illusion." Also, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who listened to this album back when it first came out and made a point of always listening to "Man in the Wilderness" (HIGHLY recommended) and "Castle Walls" back-to-back.

Angela, thank you for reacting to this song. I'm 59 and live on the shore of Lake Michigan. When I heard this, it took me back to 1979/80. My best friend has a '71 Gran Torino...we would cruise along Lake Michigan every day and night during summer vacation. Listening to Styx, Bob Seger, Boston, REO, the list goes on. Thanks for waking up some old great memories!

Song is a masterpiece! One of their greatest recorded songs along with Man in the Wilderness, and Suite Madam Blue - and none of those ever get any radio play. So sad to not have that reach. So many are mesmerized by this song. So happy your subscriber requested it and you checked it out to let it reach the ears of so many new listeners.
And to see them live - they were amazing. So fun, so enjoyable. Their music is so cheery and uplifting and their shows are almost like a religious experience, you just can't see them live and not leave with a huge smile.
This is from Grand Illusion album and I think most Styx fans agree was their best album.

Love Styx, just saw them at Artpark like a month ago. Love this band also, singer did a killer cover version of Castle Walls, and their new album has parts that sound very Styxish, some Rush and Floyd flavor, band called Mystery, absolutely fantastic catalog: ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_nnKpD4dqyTYbyP93MST-nhCCxHCeUD5Tg

Many of their best songs are the deep tracks that didn't get airplay. "Castle Walls" is one of their all-time greatest tracks. Mystical, epic, sublime and other-worldly. It's a musical journey of mythic proportions that ends in catharsis as the last chord echoes into the cascading distance. You have to stand in awe of a song like "Castle Walls", it's Styx at their legendary best.

They were definitely known for theme albums. Grand Illusion (This song, Come Sail Away-their biggest song ever. Man in the Wilderness,) Paradise Theater (Best of Times, Too Much Time on my hands), Pieces of Eight (Blue Collar Man, Renegade), Mr. Roboto (which you've done), just to name a few of them.

Styx has been my favorite band since 1977, and you can tell by my handle I love this song :)
Dennis DeYoung never like being on the road away from his family, and this deep-meaning song delves into that. This song creates an erie mystical realm that surrounds you to immerse you in his story that uses imagery from medieval times to relate to his present life of being a rock musician. Beyond the lyrics, "Castle Walls" uses different instruments and sounds to evoke feelings and emotions as part of the story telling. To me the simple bass at the beginning is Dennis at home behind his castle walls in a calm peace(hearing his own breath). The harpsichord-sounding keys are like the minstrel in him calling him out. Far beyond his castle walls on tour the battle rages like hell with those harsh keys, echoing drums/thunder, and tough steel-on-steel guitars/swords. There's a brief return to the bass and home, and then back out on tour to the fury to meet his destiny.
Another deep track from the "Grand Illusion" album is Tommy Shaw's "Man In The Wilderness". It's about how isolated he feels as a rock star on the road and the place in his life he is at. It is sort of a follow-on to his "Crystal Ball" that he wrote before joining Styx in a kind of life limbo.
I'd like to suggest a few more songs for your Styx journey: "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "Fooling Yourself", "Lady", "Claire De Lune/Ballerina", "Blue Collar Man", and "Come Sail Away" (album version or live from 1996 "Return To Paradise" tour - NOT the Official cut-down MTV video).

Yes, you really *do* have to hear the whole, entire album. Album Oriented Rock was at its zenith at this time. We ate this stuff up. You'd block out some time, buckle up, get comfortable, and go for the ride. I (who generally remember nothing) vividly recall a particular time being sick and deliriously feverish and listening to this one, end-to-end, of course.
If you have have a fever, not a bad way to do it.

Way underrated band in their time. But IMO....a superb band that had great harmonies, musicianship, lyrics and between DeYoung, Shaw, Young....those 3 were great enough to be the main artist in any other band!...but all together..they were very gifted to bring us STYX!

Soothing music. I see that you have done some one hit wonders. The Ides of March had a song called Vehicle, I'd like to see you reaction to it. The part of the chorus where they say "Love Ya, Need Ya, Great God in Heaven...." is one of those parts that really stands out (for a non-epic song).

This whole album treats you like this song like a scene of a bigger message. Grand Illusion (title song and Album name) is the theme where rock bands and celebrities appear as all glamorous, but it's not always the case. "Superstars" on this album explains it very well. Of course, "Come Sail Away" is like one of their biggest songs and very well known. Castle Walls goes similar to "Man in the Wilderness". Their album "Paradise Theater" uses this theme strategy as well. "Mr. Roboto", from the "Kilroy was Here" album, though quirky, has it's theme as well and may be their most known song across the generations due to its uniqueness. They had many hits, but "Babe" is I believe their only #1 hit in the USA.

As mystical as the songs may sound, they hold practical meanings. The entire album is about the illusion of beauty, fame and fortune that we all buy into, but profoundly, “deep inside we’re all the same”. The theatrical aspect was entirely Dennis DeYoung (the singer) and that is what drove Styx apart eventually, as the other two writers favored more rock oriented songs.

Most everything has been said on what to do
I've seen them three times. Twice with the original lineup. Including Jon 😇
They were better with Dennis DeYoung though
"I'm a lonely sailor lost at sea. Drifting with the tide. Never quite knowing why"
"Sometimes it makes no sense at all"
You could compare them to REO SPEEDWAGON before REO changed. their sound.
They're going to play with REO at The Nugget in Sparks soon. If you can see them, do it now before it's too late.
