Recommend this diamond to the youngsters; when you see all the crap produced nowadays, it's a pity to miss it. Superb cast and performances, great plot, great atmoshpere.
Charles Laughton should have won an Academy award for his role as Sir Wilfred in the first version-he was such a damn good actor. he was terrific in the first version. RIP Charles.

Love both versions. Difficult being compared with Laughton and Dietrich. But this works also! I enjoy to see Deborah Kerr here - remembering in quo vadis, the damned and the king and I. This version is more a theater performance than a movie. 😍👏
I have never seen a film that I didn't like with Donald Pleasance. A superb actor, very underrated, always brought a level of professionalism that was rarely equaled by others.

Self isolating ( now that's a statement i hope i never have to say again ). After watching so many 3rd rate films, both American and British, how refreshing to watch some of the finest acting you are ever likely to see in your lifetime. Absolutely superb and at times comical in every way.
Nice remake. I have always admired the work of Sir Ralph, Ms. Kerr, Ms. Rigg, Ms. Hiller and Mr. Pleasance. However, the original 1957 version with the magnificent Charles Laughton and that supporting cast (Elsa Lancaster, Marlene Dietrich, Tyrone Power, John Williams, Una O'Connor) is just superb.
The script was identical in both films, but the Laughton film was new: we saw the play unfold with new eyes. This remake plays the action again and so may seem not quite as fresh. But thanks to Agatha Christie’s story and superb acting by Richardson et al, the movie is really as fresh as the original. A wonderful film!
One of my favourite British films of all time, always watched it when it was on, always seemed to be on a rainy Sunday afternoon when I was a kid in England, this version is very good, stellar British cast can’t beat a bit of Agatha Christie.
Sir Ralph Richardson has been one of the finest actors ever. Classy and unflappable. This film is perfect for watching on a rainy weekend. The Bee's knees indeed.
Old Ralph played many later things with his tongue firmly in his cheek, but he could always radiate a mesmeric charm, like a stage hypnotist, which here they emphasize with his glittering monocle. He could be funny and light, but there was always skill and gravitas too.
Simply wonderful Agatha Christie, superbly acted by an all star cast. Ralph Richardson is irreplaceable! And how young Deborah Kerr and Diana Rigg were. Just marvelous, thanks for the post!

So far I’ve only seen the B&W version with Charles Laughton and I’m thinking Elsa Lancaster was his assistant/secretary! Tyron and Marlene Dietrich were the bad guys!!
@@tonypegler3618 Hi Tony, It's difficult, both productions are very good. The early one is in black and white. Marlena Dietrich is excellent and adds mystery, drama, and a first-class thrill factor. The later production had a lot to live up to but has a first-rate cast. If I was pushed for an answer I would choose the 1982 production. Agatha Christie deserves a mention as it is a fabulous bit of writing. Both worth a watch.
@@tonypegler3618 '57 is better. In the scene where the mysterious cockney woman gives the defense attorney the letters, Diana Rigg's face must be obscured. But Marlene Dietrich looks right at the camera in plain sight and we don't recognize her. At least I didn't.

I love the original with Charles Laughton and Elsa Lancaster. I saw it back in 1980. The casting was perfect with Ralph Richardson playing Laughtons role, Diana Rigg made a great Marlene Dietrich and surprisingly Beau Bridges accomplished his Innocent act as effectively as Tyrone Power. The addition of Donald Pleasence as the prosecutor and Wendy Hiller as the maid was the icing on the cake. I know there's a brand new one out but I can't bring myself to watch it. What a great remake and I didn't think it would ever be done to equal the first. Thanks for sharing. I would suggest to anyone who'd like this movie to see the original.

Thanks for uploading this. I was worried because sometimes these star-packed things are dreadful, but this was swell! Ralph at 80 STILL has the chops and is acting everyone off screen.
Ralph comes across quite infirm in his performance. He lacks the spark/energy that Charles Laughton had. Particularly his end scene with Diana Rigg in which she confesses doesn't have the same kick it had in the original.
I can't lie. I enjoyed this version as much as the original. The cast was excellent and the acting phenomenal. This was more than an "attempt" as stated in some comments. This was very very good and in my opinion as good as the original.

Great movie. I'd seen it before as a young girl. To see it here again brought back memories of watching it with my mom on German TV many many years ago though it was a different version of the movie which was made earlier in 1957 with Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton.

The writing and story line of this drama was the real provider of enjoyment ably assisted in both films by top class actors. Magnificent in both! and film at its best.
I was deceived by Vole's cry of grief and desperate performance. I was fascinated by the wonderful casting of "Witness for the Prosecution ". And I admire the ages and careers of Ralph Richardson (80), Wendy Hiller (70) and David Langton (70).
This is the best version of the book ever made , in my opinion. Wonderful cast and the perfect mix of suspense and humor, in true Agatha Christie style !

The German lady reminded me of Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes books. What a remarkable woman. I like women with brains. They are few and far between but when one meets with such a lady she's a gift.

Sir Ralph Richardson is such a consummate actor that anything he plays is outstanding. One of the greatest actors of the 20th century - along with Lawrence Olivier and John Guilgud. And Diane Ring was such a stunning woman. Wow. What a remake of a classic film. Not many re-makes approach the original but this one does a most credible job.

Yes, it's a blasphemy to the witty original plot by Christie. There is no point of trying to be creative when the original is creative enough.

After seeing Sir Ralph Richardson in the film "Fallen Idol" and "Witness For The Prosicution" I realized what a genius he was as a character actor.
Ralph Richardson was perfection!
Fallen Idol was stunning. Look for Home at Seven, another wonderful mystery with him at the heart of it.

It was in The Heiress that I first encountered Ralph Richardon and he was perfection!

Good movie! Didn't quite expect the ending to be like that. Spoofed me a little but made the movie more exciting.

And MR. BELLAMY from "UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS ". Sir Ralph was always excellent. D Kerr always great and Diana Rigg. But I did love the version with Charles Laughton & Elsa Lanchester. All very good actors including Donald Pleasance. Enjoyed.
One of the best crime stories made into a movie, and the actors were excellent.
The writing and story line of this drama was the real provider of enjoyment ably assisted in both films by top class actors. Magnificent in both! and film at its best.
I was deceived by Vole's cry of grief and desperate performance. I was fascinated by the wonderful casting of "Witness for the Prosecution ". And I admire the ages and careers of Ralph Richardson (80), Wendy Hiller (70) and David Langton (70).
This is the best version of the book ever made , in my opinion. Wonderful cast and the perfect mix of suspense and humor, in true Agatha Christie style !

I'd been watching too much Sujet as Poirot, so I decided to strike out into new territory. This film was a blast!
The German lady reminded me of Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes books. What a remarkable woman. I like women with brains. They are few and far between but when one meets with such a lady she's a gift.
Yes yes one finds it very hard to find a female with a modicum of common sense, well said .

Sir Ralph Richardson is such a consummate actor that anything he plays is outstanding. One of the greatest actors of the 20th century - along with Lawrence Olivier and John Guilgud. And Diane Ring was such a stunning woman. Wow. What a remake of a classic film. Not many re-makes approach the original but this one does a most credible job.
