    Apple should be ashamed of themselves for not having a minimum of 32 gb ram and 1tb on all the rigs. Ram and SSDs are so incredibly cheap now, Apple is robbing people with their overpriced memory.

      I could see that for the MacBook Pro, yes. But not the air. While I still think 8GB in general is far too little, 16GB for folks browsing the web, composing emails, and using Pages on an Air is plenty. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!

For the personality types who simply want the bottom line, I like how you started the video with that. For us detail oriented types, I appreciate how you kept giving more and more details.

    I have the 16" MacBook Pro and I keep kicking myself for not just getting the 14" and getting a solid external display. The extra screen real estate is so nice when I have the space, but editing a plane is so rough with such a large beast haha.
    Great video dude!

      Exactly why I got the 14”. The smaller screen is especially not a big deal if you can use Sidecar with an iPad to extend your screen. Great when traveling - maybe not on the plane though. Haha. Thanks for watching, buddy!

      I bought the 14" for that reason: the 16" is too big and heavy for me. That said, I wouldn't recommend the 14" MBP with the Max processors as there is not enough room to cool those chips. But with the Pro processors, it's a fantastic little computer much more confortable to use when traveling.

      Appreciate the additional insight. I have the base M1 Pro and have had zero issues with heat and performance. If my MacBook Pro was my daily driver I would have upgraded it a bit more but with having the Mac Studio I could handle a lower spec-ed MBP.

      I definitely hear ya. Im physically disabled too so weight and size of any electronics is a huge concern for me. Even though the form factor is nice and tight, the 14" packs some weight. I'd probably wilt under the weight and size of the 16". That said I don't feel like I've given up anything going with the 14". Honestly a great piece of equipment that actually rivals my Mac Studio M1 Ultra home edit bay.

    Something else I should probably share. My first MacBook product was a MacBook Air I bought in 2011. It was the piece of hardware that convinced me to leave Windows. From there, I discovered iMovie and GarageBand and in no time it became FCP, Motion, Compressor, Logic Pro and tons of plug ins. I say this because I first bought the Air as a more affordable means of testing the Mac waters and only planned to use it for light browsing and very light content creation. As I began to use it more for FCP I quickly ran into thermal issues right up until I actually fried the system board into complete failure. This immediately came to mind when Matthew mentioned the fans inside the Pro (they're super quiet BTW). Now this was years ago and I'm sure the thermal capabilities of the Air have improved but if you are doing any kind of serious FCP work on a regular basis, I don't think the Air is the right route.

    Whew! I often like to pretend I know what I'm doing so for travel I bought a new MacBook. Here's the good news: I did go for the 14" MacBook Pro with 64GB memory a 1TB SSD and I added a Lacie external 5TB drive for media and work files. Even better news is that while this thing was anything but affordable, I did tell the Apple rep exactly what I need it for and I wanted a little extra for growth and after this video I'm convinced they did not try to oversell or upsell me. You are so right, the display on this thing is practically orgasmic and just as a simple form factor, it actually feels kind of sexy in your hands. Frankly I don't know how they do it but Apple makes the best products on Earth when it comes to physically handling them. Yes I guess that's ultimately not important but both a Yugo and Ferrari will get you from A to B. If someone offers you either, which do you honestly go for?

    • @matthewTobrien

    For me, it’s not the price I’m torn with. It’s the weight and size. I travel all year long with it on my back, along with a bunch of other gear and every oz really starts to add up. Fwiw, I’m a photographer, so not as power needy as a video editor, but I do use Lightroom, photoshop and some plugins all at the same time and do a lot of rendering/exporting. I just figured maybe an m2 air with 24gb of ram and 512 ssd might be best for me if I value the weight savings?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  6 месяцев назад +2

      It's a .7 lb difference. I'd deal with the extra weight personally. You just get so much more with the 14" MacBook Pro...

      @alefeusch 6 месяцев назад

      @@matthewTobrienI appreciate the reply! I actually went into the apple store just now with my backpack and, yeah, unfortunately the .8lbs and the extra bulk makes a pretty significant difference in my bag! I know it's surprising, but it really was noticeable. What I'm doing is taking the M2 air home to play with for 14 days and if I feel like it falls short, I will reconsider. But, again, I really appreciate the reply, I know for most people .8lbs isn't much, but I'm already pushing the limits for backpacking.

      @alefeusch 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@matthewTobrien btw, fwiw, I think you are 100% right about the screen. If it were only coming down to money for me, I'd spend the extra $300 for the screen alone in a heartbeat. It's the main sacrifice I think I'm making for weight savings. It's just that the other stuff like the extra ports/HDMI port, better sound, better mics... even the fans... they just don't make any difference to me and the power seems like more than enough for photo editing. But, I've been editing on a 2017 MacBook pro for 7 years, so even the liquid retina is still a bit of an upgrade. I will let you know what my final decision is!

    • @louisevessey3839
      @louisevessey3839 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@alefeusch I'm in a similar boat. Professional Photographer who likes to slip my MacBook into my camera bag. I'm not getting any younger so weight savings is important. My MacStudio is my main workhorse however so the MBP is mainly for surfing and occasional image editing (my files are pretty huge), and travel. Portability and power are of value to me. Cost doesn't matter so much. My 2016 MBP is getting obsolete and a tad slow but has been an amazing machine for 8 years. Is there really that big of a difference between the screens? I opened both at Staples and brought up my website and displayed full screen images I am familiar with and really could not tell the difference. Here's a silly thing I really dislike about the new MBPs. The keyboard being all black vs the Air being black keys set into the colour of the computer. It looks cheap just plunked into the MBP. Maybe I'm being overly picky on that issue. I already have the dongle/ hub for SD/ HDMI etc. Oh Decisions! Update here on what you decide!!

    • @alefeusch
      @alefeusch 6 месяцев назад

      @@louisevessey3839 I went with the M2 air with 24gb of RAM and I'm very happy with it. I was worried the display might not be as good for photo editing but I actually decided to put my own Lightroom catalog up on both computers (MBA M2 13" & MBP M2 14") and was shocked to find that my photos looked nearly identical on both screens. The difference was entirely negligible. And, for me, the weight difference was significant. My bag is already full of camera gear and clothing, etc... an extra 3/4 lb plus the extra bulk of the MBP was very noticeable. The Air is lightning fast and absolutely blazing through all the tasks I've thrown at it and I'm not in need of the extra ports/speakers/mics /etc.... I am sticking with the Air, I think the light and thin form factor is going to be a pleasure!

    Thank you for the video. We just bought the M3 macbook air 16GB base SSD. I do light video editing and hope it holds up. I had a hard time even spending over 1K on the laptop (the apple tax is ridiculous) especially to move up from 256 to 512 or 16GB to 24GB. I'm coming from a galaxy book 360 so im guessing we won't have any issues with speed unless we start getting heavier into editing or 3D design.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  6 месяцев назад

      It’s always hard to buy that first Mac, but when the resale value is typically 25% or more of original price several years later, it makes it a lot easier to cough up that initial dough.
      Not to mention how much more amazing working on a Mac is compared to Windows. At least for me that’s been the case.
      Light video editing should be fun, but if you start getting into much heavier editing consider a MacBook Pro when it’s time to upgrade.
      Congrats on your new Mac!

    Liquid Retina has the same color gamut as regular retina, its only benefit is HDR. Liquid Retina in standard mode is the same brightness as the MacBook Air, but in either mode liqid retina has to use Pulse Width Modulation to dim it's display but the regular Retina display on the air doesn't use PWM (less eye strain). So yes, you'll get deep blacks with blooming on the Liquid Retina instead of not all that deep black on the air. In either case, your color work should be done on a large display that has even better display qualities than either laptop, you'll be hooked up to a monitor or two, just like you show in your video. You can also get a monitor which has a few more ports and does power delivery over usb-c. Hmm. I've unconvinced myself of your video especially with the air M3 being out. Also the base m3 pro has 18GB of ram...seems good enough unless you're rendering video 8 hours a day and rendering one more video before you go home will legitimately make you more money.
