Through the right amp an L5 can sound incredible....but then so can a Benedetto Guild, Eastman or any number of made overseas made guitars. I stopped obsessing over the name on the headstock or the country of origin a long time ago. Now it's all about how it sounds and feels.
I would not put an Italian handmade Benedetto in the same class as a Chinese made Eastman.
@realtruenorth benedettos are made in Georgia my guy. And don't hate Eastman's. They fit in a very important middle ground between entry level archtops and the custom built guitars north of $6k. Their biggest sin is that they're hard to find in stores
@@daniellowry660 oh, I must have been confused with Bartolini, and I'm not hating on Eastman, any more than I hate on Toyota. I just don't put Toyota in the same class as BMW or Ferrari. 🤷♂️
@realtruenorth that's fine but I do think Eastmans provide real quality archtops at a more accessible price. Tbh I think they make it hard to justify buying most gibson styled archtops. With that said I don't think they make anything that comes close to the sound of say a Benedetto, Victor Baker, or Moffa but at that point you're doing a custom order for north of 6k so Eastman isn't really competing with those
@@daniellowry660 exactly, does Eastman make any solid top archtops? I'm sure they are pretty good for their price range. My only hang up is I don't like supporting China's economy for reason of political humanitarian issues. The people there are like slaves/prisoners. I can't support that when there are other options. Life has more important things than best value for dollar.
That L5 sounds as good as it looks, gorgeous. Of course Rich is a master musician, but this guitar speaks to me. I have watched him play many guitars and while they all sounded good, this one is special. Crazy good.
I wholeheartedly agree
Personally I think a hand made guitar by an experienced Luthier will always beat mass produced instruments. The best instrument you can have is the one you own now. In my case thats a PRS SE standard hollow body. It can do any genre of music and has a superb warm tone. I dont need anything else it does the job.
Hi Rich,
Great live stream, what a great idea to have a discussion on what is better sounding than a
Gibson L5! Wonderful playing as usual and like Jim Rolfe said he would like to learn that 1st
country picking tune you played , so would I. Is it in the Guitar College Library?
You guys keep up the good work and You and Wes and Gail have a Merry Xmas and
wonderful Holiday Season!!
Allen and Linda Ayers
I've tried various L-5's . I continue to play my L4-C . IDK , maybe it's my hand size. Your Holiday covers are nice !
Merry christmas from Edmonton in Alberta, congratulations for your beautiful videos
I think the guitar is great. I had one but was not a fan of the size so I sold it. How about the jazz artists like Ted Greene that played a tele? I think the instrument matters to the player but a great player can make any instrument sound good no matter what it is. The players preference for a guitar is like a persons preference for food. Not everyone likes everything all tastes are totally different.
Dear lord this guitar is so beautiful. This reminds me of when I lost my Chad Atkins Christmas record. Learning some Christmas songs actually is a great idea . Maybe that will help me calm down with all the chaos breaking out around the world.thank you for this video.
Rich is fantastic as a guitarist. I have been working on many christmas songs for this year. I play chord melody and have most pf the popular Christmas songs arranged already.
What superb playing - excellent
The L 5 looks like a christmas tree, suitably to the music!🙂Great playing!
Thank you Rich.
I would love to have an L5 , specifically back in the late 80s early 90s Gibson had a stripped down version called an L5 studio , but also a guitar I played and instantly fell in love with though I haven't had the funds or opportunity to snag one is the heritage eagle, an amazing near perfect guitar
Wow I was never a jazz fan till I stumbled upon your RUclips channel Thanks for opening my eye's Jazz is Kool lol
Regarding the bodyless guitar experiment, people hung up on the myth of the effect of the body wood on solid electric guitar tone have tried desperately to debunk it, to little avail. It reminds me of Les Paul's original "The Log" electric guitar.
Beautiful sound on the L5 Rich...maybe it's a tad large for long venues. I have tried a lot of guitars...I really like my George Benson LGB300 made in Japan...George say's it was modeled after the early Guild Jazz guitars...pure magic. Hope all is well. James
Watching and enjoying the replay in Thailand. Speaking of expensive guitars, I'm seeing a 1963 Gibson Explorer listed on a reputable site for $198,000 .
I prefer the neck on a Johnny Smith though I’ll never be able to own one again. It seemed to feel better in my hand that’s all
you've got soul when you play
I have an L5 and a Guild Artist Award. I wouldn't want to say which is better they are both very fine multiple pieces of wood. At the time I bought them the L5 cost more, but I think the AA is a sleeper, only 1600 ever made, there's bound to have been a few of those destroyed. One was for sale by Gruhn in Nashville. A Luthier named Lacey removed the Guild neck and tailpiece and replaced with a neck with his name on it and an ebony violin like tailpiece. I will never understand that... Beyond the Guild you can get close by degree, but to be equal to will always be a hard score to make. My opinion.
Yeah, I remember that guitar on Gruhn's page.
I think the story was that the AA had been in an accident or something.
Mark Lacey built a new neck for it
I like a the sound & feel of my 1977 Gibson Super 400 with a single floating Gibson BJB pickup.
One commenter suggested a L5 is bluesier than an ES-175. Obviously, it comes down to the player. But in some respects I agree. Think about those 70s Philly sound R&B hit records with the unmistakable L5 sound. George's, Kenny's, and Wes' have bluesy elements to their playing, They played L5s or related guitars (i.e., Super 400 and Johnny Smith). So did Eric Gale who played a Super 400. Grant Geissman's bluesy playing with a phase shifter. There's a certain rawness to a L5 with the volume turned up. On the other hand, Pat Methany, Herb Ellis and Joe Pass played ES-175s. Although they were quite bluesy, their 175 sound I would say is more refined in comparison. A L5 is more "urban" to me. I grew up in Detroit. The cats there all played L5s (very well!). I may be generalizing a tad, but someone with a long history of guitar playing would know what I'm getting at.
I believe "My Girl" was on an L5
See? I did not know that!
I have BIAB. Im going to order your tracks. In the upcoming days, Im going to post about my Gretsch Falcons (Rose and white/caddy tailpiece) and absolute sleepers: guitar, Peerless Tonemaster Custom Peerless Martin Taylor Maestro.
That Gibson archtop with the mahogany body sounds really sweet, to this old man ...
Do you have any tricks to remember chord progressions?
I own an ES350. Lefty. The same as an L5 except for the Maple top. Although very expensive, worth every penny.
That's a wonderful guitar , I used to own one , but not the same as an L5 . Different scale length, body size , and materials .
Rich, great playing as usual. Are you using the bridge pickup on this song?
Merry Christmas.
Neck pu
George Shearing put out a very nice Christmas record.
Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas by Kenny B’s not too shabby
I love the L% except the neck is to thick for my taste. Silver Bells was written for the movie "The Lemon Drop Kid" wit Bob Hope. He was singing it while taking money out of the pot of Salvation Army donation.
What I want and what I can afford are widely different things. Santas L5 will forever stay a dream unfulfilled. Then again I’m running short of time, tick off 75 in the upcoming year. That’s life!
That's a bummer that you had to give up Fender amps. My Howard Roberts Custom has a tone like liquified butter through an old silverface Vibrolux and I don't have any issues with feedback...but then again I'm not a pro and I don't play at screaming loud volumes. Really easy to dial in a great tone on that guitar though....
Gibson L-5 certainly is the gold standard, but there are so many other great alternatives out there like D'Aquisto, Eastman, Benedetto, Peerless, Samick, Aria, Ibanez, D'Angelico, Guild, Epiphone, Godin, Heritage, Hofner, let alone the bespoke builders like Andersen Guitars (Seattle) or Sadowsky Guitars.
Hummmm. Have you had a chance to play a Benedetto?
I had a luthier named Tom Doyle build a L-5 arch top for me when I was 24. Looks and sounds fantastic. But to the person listening it’s hard to tell the difference from a cheap arch top. I know the difference. But at the end of the day no matter what u are playing if the person playing it can actually play….that’s what’s makes the difference. Age old saying not the arrow but the Indian. Very true
Have you ever tried an ES 195?
A L5 has that ringing bell quality to its tone.
What about the classic D'Angelico
I’d trade yours for mine! lol. I dont think you can say any guitar is better than a Gibson L5. Man your tone is so beautiful. You probably answered this in the video but what are your setting on the guitar and what model amp are you using.
Direct into the mixing board
D'Aquisto would probably make you something.
The Bob Benedetto?
What about the super 400
Gibson Super V had that tone built-in.
Vintage 175 ?
I just bought a 1977 Aria II Pro CE-180.. lawsuit guitar made in Japan and copy of the ES-175 L% Super 400.. It cost me $850 and it is a steal! Incredible craftsmanship, tone, Playability all 10's.. I am 73, have 3 high end PRS, 6 high end Martins, 3 high end Taylors..I put that Aria on par with all of them. I had a chance to spend 7k for L5 and passed and got as good as that in my opinion after playing both. The CE 180 came from custom shop for professional musicians, top of their line. buy one if you can find one
I have an Aria TA-100 from 1981 - top of the line instrument. It's similar to an ES-335 but with a carved maple top, sycamore back and side, 5pc mahogany/maple neck with ebony fingerboard. The inlays on the fingerboard are real mother-of-pearl +abalone. Fantastic player, and much better build quality than any 335 from that era.
I’ve found a PE-180. What specs are different from the CE?
What’s better than an L5? The guitar that John D’Angelico made for Johnny Smith.
Greetings: Have you experienced any issues with buzzing in your L5? I have a buzz in mine and have changed pickup springs and have switched to flatwounds - better but not totally buzz-free. Any ideas?
Could be wiring is it laying on the wood?
Gibson CES 400 would be a contender
Yot make jazz guitar look very groovy
The guitar that's better than an L5 is the one in your hands that you can actually play instead of dreaming of the guitar you don't have
Gibson L5 is THE holy grail guitar for me.
George benson guitar range
The double guitar thing is no doubt “different”, but my whole question is WHY? Just have another axe on a stand.
How about a Heritage H550 lol
There are so many decent cheap arch tops it’s hard to choose. When I was growing up Gibson was pretty much king of arch tops … in looks , sound , and playability. There were always custom arch top makers. But as far as off the assembly line Gibson was the bees knees. Now there are so many that look and sound really good. It’s hard to justify spending crazy money on any arch top. Unless you collect or just have money to burn. Most good players can play just about any guitar and make it sound good
Gibson custom L5 Double cutaway or Byrdland custom !!! No feedback and easy to handle !!!
Guess Gibson can use Kalamazoo because that’s where they were for so long; their origin. 1:06:17
Christmas album… An Oscar Peterson Christmas
I don’t t think it’s possible to beat the Gibson L5. It is the gold standard of Jazz arch tops. Certainly there are others but IMO the Gibson L5 is king!
An L7
L4 and 175 are better I think
What is better than a L5? Two L5s?
A 1968 byrdland custom is way better....
Nice broadcast but suggestion - chewing gum during a live broadcast mic'd up is kinda, uh gross lol
Noted!
Bay - dont complain - enjoy
@@daliborpanjkovic9691 It’s not a complaint, it’s constructive criticism for the poster. I work in digital content marketing and this sort of thing is noticeable.
Better than 1 L5? Easy... 2 L5
The best archtop for jazz doesn’t have humbuckers.
Jim Mullins is left handed but plays right handed
So am I. Just felt more natural starting out. Shally
maybe a good idea not to be chewing gum... and to try speaking in complete sentences... just saying
