Yes! I’ve been waiting for this video. After reading the book I’m honestly more confused than I already was about the hierarchy in the Ascendancy. It’s probably cos now I’m crossing information I know from legends and the new canon material. Either way I love getting to know more about the Chiss.
What happens to the children of a flag officer? Do they lose their family name? Let's say Ar'alani had children, would they stay in the Irizi family or would they lose their family name?
0:40 Zahn said there were 40 Great Families in his interview/webinar with Powell Books. And it wasn't like someone specifically asked him, so I think it was an idea he had already. The recording of the webinar should be up in a few days.
It's cool to have this information, but I feel like we're only getting a Thrawn prequel because Timothy Zahn and the story group can't move Thrawn's story forward yet.
One way or another, I'm staying hopeful for a Disney Plus Thrawn TV show! (whether it be a Thrawn Trilogy redo in the Disney canon, or the rumored/upcoming "Ezra and Thrawn adventures" live action sequel show)
@@topnotchshinobi My personal theory at the moment is that the supposed appearance of Ahsoka and Sabine in The Mandalorian will serve as a backdoor pilot to a live action show of them looking for, and finding, Ezra and Thrawn
I actually think Zahn has been wanting to take a deep dive into the Chiss for some time. Each book of Thrawns canon trilogy delved a little deeper into the Chiss Lore.
Cool video, I read the trilogy that first introduced Admiral Thrawn when I was a teenager, and thought the idea of an alien ascending through the ranks of the imperial military to be rather unusual and intriguing, considering how anti- alien and pro-human the imperials were as a whole, ideologically-speaking.

As much as I find this stuff interesting, I always find it hard to get into books with heavy worldbuilding like this so that's a big worry for me that's stopping me buying this. People who've read it - do you think the world building is handled well or is it a struggle?
The worldbuilding is perfectly fine in my opinion. This all takes place in an area so far removed from the rest of the Galaxy as we know it from the movies and other books that Zahn could have made up literally anything and been super lazy with it, but instead he put in the time and effort to really think about how the Chiss Ascendency and it’s neighbors function on both a Military and Political level. It’s a great read all around.
From the perspective of someone who is a hobbiest worldbuilder, it’s very very light, lol. I was actually disappointed ha ha (this was also in large part because of Zahn’s propensity to just... not give any detailed descriptions).
Also even though he did eventually reach the rank of Commodore within the Empire he probably kept the Mitth family name because the core name (Thrawn) that came with it was easier for everyone in the Empire to pronounce.
They sound so must like SolTerrens(US, Reason I think we be probably an offshoot of the greater Star was "Humans"). That they be a great aliys with us probably.
I love Star Wars but personally this is just too far far away from the main saga to call it Star Wars. I understand that they're expanding the SW universe but to me it's not SW without the Jedi or the force. Sorry but it's gotta be the force not the Ashla or 3rd sight.
@@goodmind4940 yes I know, I'm not saying they're not the force. I mean from the story telling perspective, as a consumer, SW is about the Jedi and Sith, about how they interpret the force. This Thrawn series is just too far removed for me personally.
Chiss culture is so fascinating, other than the whole child labour thing with the Skywalkers
Are Jedi also child labor?
@@goodmind4940
It is, isn't it,?
@@kiarash608 doubt it
Андрей Шурочка no, but they are being taken to join a force cult which separates them from their family and teaches them to be unemotional.
Haven't finished the book yet but loving the look into how the chiss operates.

I really loved getting the detailed look at Chiss society in the new book.

oh no i'm not brave enough for politics
Are you sick? Hope you get well soon! & thank you for this interesting view into the Chiss world.

Very interesting. The Chiss are pretty cool, especially Thrawn

Seems like there is a lot of infighting in the ascendancy

So it’s Romeo and Juliet with blue aliens
A saw hits of a Game of thrones type hierarchy and plots but nothing as violent
Kinda like the Drow in Faerun
Instead the title thought we were talking about the CIS.
So if Thrawn is part of the CEF, shouldn't his name be Raw'nuruodo or Raw'nuru? Is he not a high enough rank for that? Did I miss something?
One has to reach the rank of Commodore for the ceremony to occur. It'd seem Thrawn hadn't reached that before his mission to the Empire.
Also even though he did eventually reach the rank of Commodore within the Empire he probably kept the Mitth family name because the core name (Thrawn) that came with it was easier for everyone in the Empire to pronounce.
The Chiss Ascendancy is cool..
But have you heard of The Chris Ascendancy?
Waddup with that neat rabbit

Some of this Chiss stuff reminds me a lot of Duna, and it makes me feel that we need a Thrawn show made by David Lynch
Nice Video :)
Gamble: ready for a Chriss ascendancy
Is it me or 9 ruling family sounds like 9 rings of men from lord of the rings
sounds more like the Dark Elves houses in Morrowind
Star wars explain who is right me or elves people no offense
The ad was playing at the same time as the video... wtf RUclips??
Oops spelling mistake in the miniature title. Good video though.
Hello
Ngl I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the Star Wars trilogy that The game of thrones creators were making.
I hope they’re explored in Rebels sequel

That's just stupid. Thousands of worlds and a whole galaxy and you just want to focus on one part of it? Seriously?
