I met him last week in Leeds having drummed for bootleg blondie ...what a racket he makes. I was eight feet from his drumkit! He came to meet fans five minutes after the show and was still there thirty minutes later..what a gent.
Some years back I saw them twice in two consecutive nights in Dublin. On the second night, in the bar some time before the gig, he recognised me and my friend from having been right up at the front of the stage the previous night when he handed me his drumsticks. Came over to talk to us. A really good man,
I went to see Blondie in 1977 in Melbourne when they toured Australia, I was 14 years old and I have never been the same since. As a up and coming young drummer, seeing Clem beat the living shit out of his drum kit, and more importantly looking he was loving doing it , I remember it like it was yesterday Thanks for the memories and making me the musician i am today
As a drummer for 41 of my 52 years of life , I consider this guy one of my faves. He's fun to watch play...a lot of drumemrs these days are not. This guy actually seems to be enjoying himself....and while his style may seem basic , it's anything but. He brings just enough flash to keep things interesting but not so much that it steps all over the other musicians' toes...nor does it distract from the melody of the song. Plus I hear he's a really nice and humble person off stage.
+GitarStu Totally agree with you two. Plus hes a handsome looking man. Something drummers dont get a lot of the times.Hes an Icon..As for this gig hes flawlessley playing but Blondies not hitting those high notes no more. Not the same sadly
Queston: trying to play some Blondie songs on my e-drum-kit (appartment building) I noticed that imho Clem Burke has not the standard drumkit. He has only one big tom mounted and has two big tom on his right. Then there is also an extra snare on the left. Can you say something about the toms and the extra snare?
I agree. I'm 53, been drumming in bands for over 35 yrs and I can honestly say CLEM IS A BEAST! THIS is Not easy when you get older! Clem is a hurricane!
I never get tired of this track! turning 50 soon and it takes me right back to day I first heard it. those drums are brilliant. in twenty years I'll still be digging it.
Clem always seems to play twice as many notes as any other drummer and I love how he energizes the music and drives it forward. So much fun to listen to!
Clem is an absolute beast behind the kit, absolutely astonishing skills. He lays down that groove like no other. Blessing to get to still watch him do his magic!
The drum take they used of that song was actually not supposed to be used-they were still just setting up sounds in the studio and running through the song to see how the drum kit sounded. That’s why he’s so busy and playing so many rolls-he’s making sure to play the entire kit for the benefit of the engineer, so he can get sounds and set levels on ALL of the drums. He says that when he went into the control room to hear how it sounded, they all couldn’t help but notice the insane energy in that raw test track...and decide keep it as the master take. Cool, right?
Awesome that the camera is on Clem the whole time. Very rare for anyone to focus on the drummers and that is what I always like to see, being one. Debbie walking by towards the last part was such a plus 😍
Clem Burke is an amazingly good drummer. If you listen to their records, he adds little fills (especially on the hi-hat) that are difficult enough to play, but he's consistent throughout the song and then he reproduces it perfectly live.
@@debboo69 Absolutely. I wouldn't say he was lucky to play with them as well as Blondie because he's obviously that good, but he's got to feel happy about getting to play with such fantastic songwriters / performers. Lightning striking twice, if you will.
Clem is simply still the best rock drummer around. What I love about him (and was frequently slack-jawed watching his performance with Debbie in Auckland -- including the standard performance tricks: like high stick throws & catches and spins mid-song, as well as his frequent striking the drums from behind the head -- a la Animal) is how effective & powerful simplicity, combined with throwing oneself totally emotionally and physically into every song, can be.
clem is a legend he's the reason I got into drumming saw him on telly nye 1979 playing a red sparkle premier drum kit true showman stick twirling aswell always go to see blondie on tour in the UK just to watch the man in action. One of the best pop/rock drummers in my opinion worth ticket money just to see him ..looks like he's left handed aswell ?
He is left handed. I never knew that until recently. I met him at Tearaways gig in Glasgow, had a pint and a long chat with him, he said he was a leftie. What a lovely guy he was too. Told him I used to play along to Blondie records when I was a kid, trying to teach myself to play and that he's one of my drumming heroes. He's great with the fans. A really lovely guy.
I have met Clem twice after gigs and he'll make time to speak (and listen) to fans, sign things and have photos with him. He is a smart and decent chap and in no way a show-off or prima-donna. His drumming drove Blondie to another level - any proof of this if needed can be seen in the video of "Dreaming" - streuth, who laid that manic drumming down? - what a superb example of the art of drumming!
As a long-time fan of Blondie (the band, not the woman), I have always appreciated the drumming of Clem Burke . . . who pounds the songs through so well.
just like Copeland, always takes drumming to somewhere different instead of playing safe, clems brilliant drumming was easily evident way back in the 70s
Burke playing away at that weird kit back in the late seventies in NYC. He had his hair in a sixties mod style that the other bands of the era soon wore.
Hey fellow fans of Clem - you might also be interested in some of the work of Jerry Fuchs, ex drummer of LCD Soundsystem and the Juan Maclean. He was a machine (RIP) just like good ol Clem here though no one beats Clem. I suggest you look up "Happy House live at the Double Door).
Clem Burke is a class act all round. Amazing drummer, I saw him last month doing a tour with UK tribute band Bootleg Blondie for charity, came out and signed posters, chatted, the whole package, not a hint of ego.
Oh, she knows. I think they had a drummer in late 73 for a few gigs ,but then Clem shut the tour. Debbie always knew it. In their early gigs, you can catch Debbie staring at his drumming when she wasn't singing and post 1999, she would yell his name after exceptional drumming .
I met him last week in Leeds having drummed for bootleg blondie ...what a racket he makes. I was eight feet from his drumkit! He came to meet fans five minutes after the show and was still there thirty minutes later..what a gent.
I'd be passed out after playing one of his sets

No matter how hard you try not to hear, Clems drumming is Blondie's signature sound. Bash them skins Clem, no one else like ya💪
I've watched this clip many times, it never ceases to amaze me. He's just brilliant.
He was brilliant back then, brilliant now, so underrated
This guy is awesome and so underrated.
"underrated" for sure, so good
I knew this in 1980 12 years old I am so happy people noticed.
Underrated? He's so overrated?
Reuben Start Bullshit!

My all time favorite drummer! Love how he plays magic on the hi-hat!

I met him before and after a concert in 2004. He was a super nice guy !
I agree. I'm 53, been drumming in bands for over 35 yrs and I can honestly say CLEM IS A BEAST! THIS is Not easy when you get older! Clem is a hurricane!
Age is not the problem, Having Time for it is The problem :)
He must have played this a million times but he's still giving it everything - what a professional
He’s a proper drummer no doubt
Clem Burke is just great to watch ,, fantastic drummer,,
I never get tired of this track! turning 50 soon and it takes me right back to day I first heard it. those drums are brilliant. in twenty years I'll still be digging it.
What's the name of the song?

Clem is the reason i have followed blondie all these years
I never paid attention to Blondie’s drummer until I watched the video Dreaming. Awesome!!
Clem always seems to play twice as many notes as any other drummer and I love how he energizes the music and drives it forward. So much fun to listen to!
Great, what a great idea to focus on Clem, top man top man top man... thanks
Clem is a power house. An incredible rock drummer, there is always something going on. If I had a band he would be my first choice.
Imagine. Blondie and Eurythmics
Like a fine wine gets better as it ages, so does clem. He is a machine
Clem is an absolute beast behind the kit, absolutely astonishing skills. He lays down that groove like no other. Blessing to get to still watch him do his magic!
it doesn't get much better than this.legend clem.
How this dude works the hi-hat is awesome!

Clem is over-the-top SPECTACULAR !!! He NEVER fails to give anything but a brilliant performance !
Talent like this gives me chills!
The man is a God - just check out "Dreaming" for the best piece of drumming seen for years.

His kit is in front of Debbie. When do you ever see that in a band?? It’s for good reason 🤘🏻
Yea.... When you see Clem drumming and your eyes veer away from Debbie, you know he has some serious Mojo!
The drum take they used of that song was actually not supposed to be used-they were still just setting up sounds in the studio and running through the song to see how the drum kit sounded. Seen Blondie a few times and loads of great bands live and never seen a drummer work so hard. Simply brilliant Clem
Clem's what I call a 'busy' drummer - awesome...
CLEM BURKE is one the sounds of BLONDIE, without him there is no Blondie.
I have never been interested in drummers , until i saw Clem play.
One of the top drummers of all time. Love the guy. Totally in the zone. Just fantastic.
the Master at work
He is one of the best drummer around
I've been a fan for years
Awesome that the camera is on Clem the whole time. Very rare for anyone to focus on the drummers and that is what I always like to see, being one. Debbie walking by towards the last part was such a plus 😍
El gran Clem Burke! El mejor con la batería
Clem Burke is an amazingly good drummer. If you listen to their records, he adds little fills (especially on the hi-hat) that are difficult enough to play, but he's consistent throughout the song and then he reproduces it perfectly live.
He was Eurythmics main drummer and they don’t mess around

Still enjoy watching this, today. An absolutely sensational drummer
Amazing to watch. Loved it!
I love Clem. One of the most passionate souls in music. Great sense of humour and style too!
He's so fucking groovy on the hi-hats. Legend.
Thanks for putting this up, was there last night for this show and was mesmerized by the drummer, can watch it over and over again.
What an awesome drummer.
We have many drummers on the world, but, the only and the best: CLEM BURKE!!!!!!!
Clem is simply still the best rock drummer around. Saw him play at Max's Kansas City with his side band "The Colors" around '78-'79. The show has stuck with me for 40 year's.
Utterly mesmerising.

Yep he's left handed, plays a right handed kit but often leads with his left. In fact he's admirably ambidextrous.
never noticed that he's indeed left-handed, until this vid...amazingly ambidextrous.
Catch him with The Long Shadows around the Los Angeles area while you can. The band absolutely rocks!

FECKING WOW !!!!! THAT WAS AWESOME .........
Clem Burke arguably not a musician but a technical genius with the drum kit and that hyat.
Very fast and precise 16s on the hi hat. Clem, what a drummer!
One of the best!
The Best Drummer Forever... I lav his "blind style"...
As a long-time fan of Blondie (the band, not the woman), I have always appreciated the drumming of Clem Burke . . . who pounds the songs through so well.
Clem is the heartbeat of Blondie...
I met him at a elvis Costello concert. We discussed this song. The album, eat to the beat just came out.
a rock machine.
Fucking energy of this guy amazes me! Love him
Incredible Clem, great!
Clem your a real magician love you
What I wouldn't give to be able to do this just once--LOVE HIM. Thanks Maccak, this was great to watch.
I love you Clem 😍😍😍😍
He is THE DRUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The greatest drummer alive!
just like Copeland, always takes drumming to somewhere different instead of playing safe, clems brilliant drumming was easily evident way back in the 70s
Unbelievable drumming!

Fantastic drummer. ..👍🏻
Always loved Clem, he's just such a dynamic individual and the drumming is sublime.
Those high hats are huge
Fantastic.👍
The Gold Zildjian for, Clem Burke!!!
It's a machine! =)
Can't see the front of Clem's t-shirt, but I'd bet my next paycheck that it's his CBGB t-shirt ...what a legend !
Serves the song every time. But isolate any one of his drum tracks and you can tell the song every time. A songwriters dream drummer.
Ladies and Gentleman, I give you............Mr Clem Burke
Clem, you are a Diesel engine.
How he works that high-hat is a thing of beauty to watch and learn by...love me some Clem Burke. His cymbal work is pure joy.

ONE OF THE MOST UNDERATED DRUMMERS!!!!!! CLEM BURKE IS AWESOME!!!!!:)))))
Clem is the best out there in my opinion. A genuine legend. He inspired my son to take up the sticks. He’s now the drummer in BLOXX.
Clem is something special, one of the all time greatest drummers
Clem Burke is great drummer!!
never knew this track was so complicated on the hi hat, awesome playing
Mind blowing!
Clem Burke is a class act all round. Amazing drummer, I saw him last month doing a tour with UK tribute band Bootleg Blondie for charity, came out and signed posters, chatted, the whole package, not a hint of ego.
Such an inspiration. .Knows exactly what a drummer is supposed to do. Hold the band together and drive the music forward. All so smoothly executed.
It is like he has 3 arms......in my opinion.....the best drummer of all time, he was born to be a drummer.....he is non stop busy on the kit.
Great concert drummer.
I think Debbie Harry knows how fortunate we are to have Clem Burke's talents to drive all the Blondie songs... what a talented powerhouse!
