American McGee's Alice [Doom 2 Mod]

  • Alice battles surreal enemies found lurking throughout the realms of the subconscious.
    For context, this series offered a reimagining of the classic tale whereby Alice is the lone survivor of a fire which engulfed the family home. This event leaves her mentally traumatized and a long term resident at the Rutledge Asylum for several years. Her shattered psyche in turn has impacted her vivid imagination, resulting in the once idyllic Wonderland and it's inhabitants being corrupted and warped into a horrific parody of their original states. This has meant Alice's return in the possibility she could restore some semblance of order to save it and herself.
    As for the mod itself, "Toys of Madness" v1.1.0 provides an assortment of weapons from the two games in the series. These are presented with well implemented effects, sprites and accurate portrayals in their usage, each offering correct primary and alt-fire features. The quick kick is a delightful inclusion to the mix and the jackbomb provides a deployable stationary flamethrower which will explode after approximately five seconds.
    Notably, the player HUD is well implemented, fitting the aesthetic of the series.The players health here is displayed as Alice's reflection, alongside the usual numerical indicators, with the mirror becoming more damaged as player health is lowered. The frame changes upon armor pickups as well and I appreciate that attention to detail.
    The Cheshire cat, with the voicelines and the original 3D model from the series, is cued to appear upon item pickups and map events, providing some of his insights and opinions. The only map event, outside of weapon pickups, I could activate were upon death, offering some solace that I could find that at least. I'm not sure what other conditions activate the Cheschire's welcome commentary.
    For gameplay balance, the weapon ammo differs between three seperate sources; these being mischief, mettle and malice energies, being yellow, green and purple in color respectively. Each having a different designs and noticable appearances to distinguish them.
    Pickups are lore accurate as well, the roses, here being either petals, small or large flowers, are the mods health pickups whilst complete armor pickups are straightforward enough. Now the powerup items are again direct adaptations; the Eat Me cake for invulnerability, the Rage Box for a berserker mode and the Looking Glass mirror for invisibility.
    The mod also provides the option to play with a first and/or third person perspective, bringing in the 3D Alice player model from the original game. The latter perspective certainly came into use when navigating any floating platforms, particularly those star shaped ones.
    The enemy monster set is from the "Realms of the Haunting Monsters for Doom 2" mod from the 1997 game "Realms of the Haunting" This offers a large variety of demonic enemies, boasting both variety and a capable challenge, especially in arena maps.
    In regards to enemy sets from the series, Jekyllgrim is working on such a project, the "Alice: Creatures of Madness" monster pack. At present, a wip video has displayed a couple of well implemented card guards which does show great promise.
    "Lullaby" v1.2 offers a magical, surreal map whereby you must defeat all the evil creatures inside the fortress to escape. Whilst seemingly calm and colorful it will descend into a brawl against hordes of enemies.
    To note, this map was featured in Jekyllgrim's gameplay videos for the mod, an excellent choice befitting a surreal Wonderland setting.
