I'll add one thing about slewing the POD from boresight: You can still use the DESG button on the EHSD to select a waypoint as target. If the TPOD doesn't slew over to the waypoint right away, make sure to box the SLAVE button on OSB 16 :) After that you do everything as before.
I was hoping to provide both a "quick reference" *and* a slightly more in-depth explanation and demo in this video. There's also a download for a kneeboard image in the description that has both the steps you saw in the video as well as a cheat sheet for Sensor Select Switch functions while in TPOD mode.
Thank you for actually explaining things. It's much better to know what systems, sensors and modes are for rather than just "press this, then this." I was fighting with my Harrier last night, and this explained it.
I typically don’t have any systems trouble. It comes fairly easily to me. That being said, I’ve had the AV-8B for almost 2 years and for every bit of those two years, the AGM-65F has alluded me on this platform. Never committed long enough to figure it out. I’d get through part of a video, and it just wouldn’t work as the video was saying it should. Most of the videos were too old and things kept changing with the harrier. You’re video from the very beginning outlined the steps then demonstrated. I followed.. and holy $h!t after almost 3 years I got my first Maverick off the rail! Testament to the excellent tutorial you put together here. 👏🏾👏🏾 Well done brother. We appreciate it.
Same here. Rarely use Mavs, because they keep changing things every 5 minutes. I stick to the laser rockets because you can kill more targets per sortie.
Good to see some another tutorial maker is coming back to the Harrier! I would love to see more about the CAS page and in-cockpit UTM coordinate input for waypoints and target points.
The unfortunate part of having limited time means I can't do a full series on everything I would like to. My channel is going to be largely helicopter focused but I will do some fixed wing content too when I can manage.
OMG thankyou so much! I just bought the harrier as my first module other than FC3, and none of the tutorials worked! The guided rockets loadout was a bunch of dumb rockets, the IRMV tutorial had buttons to click that weren't there anymore, it was a total mess. I figured out using the IRMV using the DMT because that process hasn't changed, but as a total newb I had no luck figuring out how to use the damn tpod for IRMVs - laser ones were ok (after some trial and lots of error) but I don't like having to keep them designated. 10 points and a sub to you.
Those bangies look alot better too.. DCS plosions were really starting to get to me. Thanks for your work man, im a Mi8 monster cause of your tutes. Hope you do another series like that someday.
Everyone do tutorial just with built-in pod, never seen one with external tpod hand off, really many thanks to you! Also really good you explained EVERY commands that it need with their names to bind stuff and not just called out a bunch of acronyms! Edit: You are really underrated man...should do more tutorials, really great and useful!
Thanks, I appreciate it! I've been struggling lately to find time to record but I do plan to make more tutorials for Laser Mavs, JDAMs, and other stuff in the Harrier. I've also got stuff in progress for the Mi-8 and eventually for the Hind as well.
@@vsTerminus Unfortunately I don't have Mi-8 and don't plan to buy Hind (for now), but really glad you will put out some Harrier videos! I really like your still but I do not own a lot of your module, so I will really look forward Harrier ones!
My group has had a fun little routine: - Fly the harrier, forget how to use IR Mavs - Spend all evening remembering how to use them and practicing with them - Don't fly the harrier for 3 weeks Repeat. So I finally decided "Enough's enough, I'm making a video!" :D
I had already done the learning part of it by then so it was really just a matter of sitting down to record. Took about an hour to make the mission and record a take I was happy with. Because it's only 11 minutes long the editing went pretty quick too. Kind of a nice break from the usual 40 minute videos I work on :P
People don't seem to understand why the harrier is my least favourite (still like it) modern CAS airframe. The workflow is just that little bit more awkward than everything else. Great vid as always - Caster
I can never get the tpod on the right mpcd and maverick on the left mpcd, i dont know if it is a recent update but when i click uncage after designating my target, the maverick screen replaces my tpod screen on the right mpcd.
There is so many things wrong in Harrier that mavericks deployment is wrong. Based to NFM-000 for H4.0 updated Harrier (that we have): 1) TPOD is a emulated Maverick video. Only one Maverick video can be shown at once (Example, you can't have two Mavericks displayed on left and right DDI). This means that when you uncage maverick (IR or Laser, doesn't matter) the TPOD video will shut off. 2) You are not required to use STORES page to get Maverick video. On the moment the Maverick is uncaged the left DDI is automatically switched to Maverick video. If you have STORES page on right DDI then Maverick video is shown there. 3) If you exit the Maverick video (example Menu > EHSD) then you need to go back to STORES page to get Maverick video back to DDI. Cage/Uncage does nothing after first time as Maverick video is active all the time until you switch to another AG weapon or master mode from AG. 4) The DESG button in EHSD is totally wrongly modeled. It is automatically selected when a weapon is released or designation is made. Only time you need to press it is to either undesignate target or designate a selected waypoint. Target (other than TO) or Mark point selection will always automatically designate target for attack and select the DESG. 5) The Maverick primary method is to use INS (HUD limited) designation. So you see the Maverick seeker box in HUD or laser search pattern that follows LST pattern and is sleevable around the specific box area (Wide, Narrow and HUD). By default laser LST scans 5 nmi ahead but pilot can use TDC to select a another position for scanning. If target is designated then LST pattern is centered around it. 6) Selecting a A-G weapon or designating a target will automatically set the aircraft master mode to AG. Pilot is not required to switch manually to that mode. The specific weapon last used parameters are as well recalled from memory. 7) Maverick is not required to be waited for cooling down. Pilot can at any time Uncage maverick after selection but the video can be distorted and you can damage the seeker by uncaging it too early (< 1 min). Now you can't Uncage maverick until cooling is finished. Those are few of dozen or so incorrectly implemented systems.
About TPOD "boresighting" and third NWS button press - first double press undesignated the target and put TPOD in SLV VV (Slaved - Velocity Vector) mode, which is non-slewable and requires placing VV on target and designating (but there is a bug - it will designate position above VV, as if TPOD was in snowplow mode). Third NWS button press put TPOD in Snowplow mode, which is slewable. Strange thing is, snowplow usually (on other aircraft with Litenings) makes container look forward and down at like -10 degrees, while Harrier's one looks slightly above velocity vector. Also, does this IRMAV slaving work with moving targets? Does it follow TPOD LoS or just looks at target position from the moment of uncaging?
good stuff. all the changes to the Av-8b and the M2k... I enjoy that Razbam is working on the modules but the total change of workflow is a bit jarring.
Yall got a Harrier group you fly? I know her pretty well, but i need some Sensor Select guidance (confusing when TPOD is involved). I know my A10c2 like the back of my hand. My CDU, TADS, MSG and Offsets. Not bad with the Black Shark (good enough to work the Datalink, Abris so so) I could use a place to fly MP with ground pounders.
Without a doubt, the best tutorial I've viewed on the topic but, it appears the logic has changed since publishing or I'm doing something incorrect. A number of recent comments suggest the latter. I can follow your steps till #6 Cage/Uncage maverick. Doing so does not split the mcpd screens with maverick on Left and TGPOD on right. Instead the target pod imagery is replaced by the Maverick on the right. Any suggestions? Wouldn't expect you to make another vid but if you or someone else can list the steps after uncaging it would be great.
So, my understanding is that IR mavs can't be used at the same time as the TGP anymore. I haven't flown the harrier since that change but I do think I will need to re-do this video at some point because it doesn't work already and it's not your fault. Good luck.
Yea... They changed it again just a few weeks after this video came out actually (lol). IIRC you can't use the TPOD and the IR Maverick at the same time anymore.
Hey, pro-tip from a Harrier noob - If you select your mavericks on the Weapon select panel while in VSTOL or NAV mode, it will start cooling and aligning the Mavericks immediately regardless of the master mode you have the plane in. Just be sure not to then try to "box" the Mav on the stores page after you do this as it will turn OFF the mavericks and you will have to restart the cool-down. Also make sure you IR-cooling switch is turned on, even though after almost 4 years Razbam doesnt seem to have implemented that switch so it may not matter... Theyre kind of a shitty dev lol
Unfortunately, the IR COOL switch has nothing to do with the Mavericks. From page 76 of the manual, “Clicking the switch to the IR COOL applies cooling to all sidewinder station that has a sidewinder or sidearm loaded. Clicking the switch to the OFF position deselects IR cooling.”
My main gripe is that they just don’t keep the manual up to date. This is not the first MAJOR workflow change they’ve done even in the year I’ve been flying this thing. :(
@@RicCrouch Yah I have a very similar complaint in that they dont seem to release realistic roadmaps, or properly communicate the changes they make to their modules.. I do like flying the harrier, but considering that the reality of the jet is that it has "semi-integrated" systems, and therefore requires learning more complicated orders of operation, they should have developed it in a way that would have mirrored the development of the actual Harrier. Not only would it bring a kind of "Sim" experience to learning the plane over time, but it would also make learning the systems alot more intuitive. Combine that with their lack of proper documentation and the Harrier has been one of the most frustrating planes for me..
Could you please use the terms "Depress" and "aft" to avoid confusion with TDC "Down", because that could mean either depress or aft, depending on where you're from. Depress and Aft negate the possibility of confusion.
I do it exactly like this and I get all kinds of weird stuff going on. Once I get the TPOD designation on the right MFD, I press cage/uncage to lock my AGM-65F onto the designated target, and it suddenly changes my left MFD back to the menu page and the right MFD goes to the Maverick IR view but I'm unable to do anything with the page. If I press Sensor press twice to take the maverick out of TPOD mode, the left MFD goes back to the TPOD page and I have to start over. What am I missing?
Unfortunately RAZBAM made a change a few weeks after this video came out. IR Mavs and the TPOD cannot both display at the same time anymore. I haven't found time to update this video yet to reflect that, sorry!
@@vsTerminus So if I have a target designated with the TPOD, do I still need to send it to the maverick by uncaging it? If I do, how can I then slew the maverick to get it to lock on?
Okay, so I got past that issue but I think I know why this isn't working for me. I get no heat signature whatsoever on my targets. Here's what I do, I just go into the editor and create a very simple mission. Just a Harrier with four AGM-65F's, an AAQ-28 Tpod and a few BTR-80's or T-90's moving slowly up a road. I get up to altitude and approach the waypoint, I find the targets with some difficulty because they are not lit up. In black hot, the targets are black. In white hot, the targets are white. So my Tpod and my Maverick seeker head never lock onto them. I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong, but then I see an AI vehicle go by my target on the road and it's got a heat signature. I can see it with the Tpod from miles away, but my target, which is mobile and moving, is not lit up at all. I had heard there was issues with this long ago in DCS but I figured it was fixed because in your videos and in many other tutorials, the targets all have plenty of heat showing. So... what am I doing wrong? Why are my targets always cold?
I don't know why, I follow every step, but when I press Cage/Uncage, the screen with the tpod becomes the screen for the maverick, but I can't move it, if I press the button to put it in IR mav, it just start to move randomly to the left, and I can't controll it
Sadly just a few weeks after this video came out RAZBAM changed the way mavericks work. You can no longer have the tgp and the seeker video feeds up at the same time. I've been meaning to update this video but honestly haven't flown the harrier much since then. Sorry for the confusion!!
My latest issue with the Harrier is when I uncage the maverick the seeker display takes over my TPOD display instead of staying on its own screen. It doesn’t matter what screen I set the TPOD or the stores page to. Uninstalling and reinstalling hasn’t helped either. Has anyone had this problem before? It started happening out of nowhere and wasn’t doing this before.
Unfortunately RAZBAM changed this like a few weeks after my video went live. The IR Mav and the TPOD can't both be up at the same time anymore. I have been meaning to do an updated guide for this, but had some computer issues over the last couple months.
I followed this to a T and it did NOT work. I've watched and followed over and over again and it just dont add up to my MAVS firing or hitting anything. Sorry. On to the next one.
Thx for the video, but im sick off all changes. Btw next Week is another change maybe. And after that maybe another one. Just checked the M2000 after a year, i mean wtf....
Oh man I wish I just had all the jets in DCS. I wish I had unlimited money. So many cool modules, I have the F14, F16 and the P51 but I just can't seem to learn one and not the other first I'm going on and off. Than I tried the F18 trial and I thought shit.. maybe I better bought this one but than I remember how cool the F14 and F16 is. I had to have a warbird but I should have bought this one or the F18.. oh well.
Your guide is a level above all others I've watched so far, keep up with this.
I'll add one thing about slewing the POD from boresight: You can still use the DESG button on the EHSD to select a waypoint as target. If the TPOD doesn't slew over to the waypoint right away, make sure to box the SLAVE button on OSB 16 :) After that you do everything as before.

Sadly no, parts of it aren't correct anymore. I have been meaning to update the video but just haven't had time recently.
@@vsTerminus No worries, I did find some that are updated but still I have issues firing Mavs, its a pretty convoluted process
I had to have a warbird but I should have bought this one or the F18.. oh well.
Сейчас так не работает.
