I love this. Everyone teaches you the scales, but when you're self-teaching no one tells you the purpose of certain notes and what they're good for. The whole tension description makes so much sense!
I found that taking just a very, very brief look at the science beneath the music helped me understand and also visualize what it is all about. Only a brief look mind you. I recommend it to anybody interested. It doesn't complicate things at all it is really revealing to just look at frequencies and how the root - 4th - 5th notes tessellate which is why you get perfect consonance. It also helped me understand exactly what an Octave is - middle 'A' = 440Hz, one Octave higher = 880Hz and then 1760Hz and so on. One Octave lower than middle 'A' would then be 220Hz. Lower Octave = 110Hz. Enlightening. You could mic up just about anything around the house, fling it thru a Wah Wah peddle, kick it with your foot and tune it to middle 'A' 440Hz using your software and then make a composition out of pure noise LOL!
I've been playing guitar 29 years, and Claus is causing me to re-imagine my instrument. This man is the best guitar teacher I've seen. Why doesn't Claus have 300,000 subs????
This guy is the best guitar teacher I've ever listened to or seen on RUclips , he actually knows what he's doing and talking about and very informative and great player how can anyone not like this guy he's a great guitar instructor !!!
When I was learning guitar my teacher only allowed me to use the major and minor pentatonic scales when soloing. After that he opened my solo's to full scales. My solos went from bland to sounding more melodic and full. Now 20 years later, Modes finally made sense to me and solos have gotten even better. Breaking out of the box shape arpeggios also helped.
Man you don't even understand how much time I searched for this, I asked so many teacher for exactly this , I tried to figured out this, you changed my life you don't even know it, you made me sound better at trumpet, guitar, bass and even piano, just thank you, people I asked how to improvising in jazz, blues watched me as an alien, the only say "yea play correct scale" you just made all brighter and all resolved
I love the energy in all your videos. Nothing looks like a 'task' or 'chore', you always make it look fun and interesting. Thanks so much for your videos and excitement about playing the guitar Claus. You're awesome!!!
I've watched a lot of basic guitar lesson videos, and I have to say that this one made the most sense. It is very lucid and brings together some of the key points about resolving tension in a scale. Very helpful!
you explain what is normally very tough for me, very feasible. this was soooo helpful, insightful and drizzled with a bunch of wonderful tasty riffs that are truly inspiring!!!
These might simply be the best videos I've seen explaining these concepts and your style is direct and with humor...which always helps.I cannot emphasize how great this is...now I should go practice! Thank you.
Claus, you have such a great way of expressing what music is made of. It is so much more than technique and you give us an emotional understanding too. Thank you.
Finally someone who really knows how to break it down, emphasize and help me understand to play solos... it really makes me think about why i get "weird or out of tune" when playing to a song...
Completely. I'd rather have an unusual, even unique guitar with an original sound that's great to play. As long as it has a great sound a great action and intonation I think. I don't know why people go straight for the Strat or Les Paul with out thinking beyond how it looks on Clapton, Hendrix or Page. Those people most often play and sound as predictable as their tastes. Oh wait ... Is that reverse snobbery now?? Oops!
This guy's awesome. I love the Joe Bonamassa lick lessons! This is fantastic too. He does such a great job of breaking down seemingly difficult things and explaining how to take it a little bit at a time.
hey clause I find your lessons completely awesome and I think you are hilarious keep them coming I look forward to the next time I see you on here peace out brother.
Hi Claus. When i go to your website, what is the program and system that you have come up with that teaches you to use the arpeggios as you show in this video. To solo over chord to chord and to go from chord note to chord note. Plus i never found the other vid that was part two of this vid, i could not find it in the link. Thanks Clause you are a pleasure to watch play and teach. I love it when someone who try's to show me something is so passionate about what there showing me. Cheers.
If nobody else likes this I love it I love the way he dramatizes things I love the way he explains things in a very dramatic way I really get off on all this energy he has and it seems like he just so micro analyzes everything he has ever learned on guitar and he must give hours of thought on how he can convey it to others in a way that is practical and yet understanding. but you have a little bit amusing too wlboy I I wish I had this guy's energy he is so full of energy
thank GOD I found this video. having that thougth from the day one I picked my guitar ... decontructing melody over a chord ! thank Claus. from the bottom of my music soul :)
Amazing explanation for someone who knows the piano and guitar, but I need to ask: In the chords, when "going somewhere" do I have to end on the root note for the chord, like C major = C note? Or Is it between the 3 notes for the C chord. Like can I finnish on the secound note that is played on the piano for C Major when I am "going somewhere"? Make sense?
I learn to play guitar all alone without a teacher. I always learn how to play by ear. For me, if the note doesnt fit then its not part of the scale. This lesson right here changes my perspective. I will drown my self with music theories now. I already know pentatonic and major scales. Any idea whats the best lesson i should learn next?
MY secound question is, if I know the Arpeggios patterns on the guitar neck, can I solo over chords if I don't really understand what I am doing theoretical, like is it enough to just know the patterns?
I love this. Everyone teaches you the scales, but when you're self-teaching no one tells you the purpose of certain notes and what they're good for. The whole tension description makes so much sense!
Struggling with the same problem. Learning to play songs on the guitar is pretty easy. However, once a little bit of music theory kicks in...
CSP the struggle is real
CSP Yup, properly understanding keys and constructing chords outside of the regular major and minor chords just kill me off. You're not alone.
I found that taking just a very, very brief look at the science beneath the music helped me understand and also visualize what it is all about. Only a brief look mind you. I recommend it to anybody interested. This guy is a star. Hilarious facial expressions, great humour, great teacher, down to earth and totally wacky.
Love him, love him, love him.
I've been playing guitar 29 years, and Claus is causing me to re-imagine my instrument. This man is the best guitar teacher I've seen. Why doesn't Claus have 300,000 subs????
dennis neo because one needs to have some modicum of brains to understand most of his stuff, which seems to be pretty rare resource in these times.
man its like u were born to spread knowledge, your teaching style is so unique and fun
This guy is the best guitar teacher I've ever listened to or seen on RUclips , he actually knows what he's doing and talking about and very informative and great player how can anyone not like this guy he's a great guitar instructor !!!
my new favorite teacher on RUclips

There is no doubt that this is one of the most important and well conducted guitar lessons that I've seen. My utmost respect and thank you very much.

OH MY GOD this guy is a genius in countless aspects.
His The Ultimate Alternate Picking course changed everything for me.
I love the energy in all your videos. Nothing looks like a 'task' or 'chore', you always make it look fun and interesting. Thanks so much for your videos and excitement about playing the guitar Claus. You're awesome!!!
you're soo entertaining. it's a brilliant teaching technique honestly
I've watched a lot of basic guitar lesson videos, and I have to say that this one made the most sense. It is very lucid and brings together some of the key points about resolving tension in a scale. Very helpful!
Claus...you are born to teach! Your unique style never fails to amaze me. Thank you very much for all your help.
This single video is one of the best guitar lessons I have seen on youtube. Worth sharing and rewatching. Thanks a ton man!
you explain what is normally very tough for me, very feasible. this was soooo helpful, insightful and drizzled with a bunch of wonderful tasty riffs that are truly inspiring!!!
awesome dude. I do this by ear but seeing it laid out and described makes it so much more clear.
I love your teaching style! You explained well what are tension and release. Thank you!
Never had so much fun with a theoretical explanation. Very vividly explained. Thanks man.
Love your expressions and gestures.
I can't thank you enough for your lessons. They have helped me immensely.
Thank you.
You are amazing. I'm so glad i found you ,and your method of guitar theory.

Finally someone who really knows how to break it down, emphasize and help me understand to play solos... it really makes me think about why i get "weird or out of tune" when playing to a song...

Brilliant teaching Claus!! And hillarious too....
Your teaching style is Unique and I love it
Great stuff; keep up the speed in explaining it and entertaining at the same time.
I love the fact he does this on a squier
Bram Leferink I know people r brand snobs cuz I swear squiers aren’t bad granted I haven’t played a ton of better guitars but I have played worse
Completely. I'd rather have an unusual, even unique guitar with an original sound that's great to play. As long as it has a great sound a great action and intonation I think. Chris Campbell facts..
Yeah that is a sweet strat, check the scalloped neck. Great for Claus’ style.
This is the best lesson about arpeggios on the internet! Kudos.
Thanks for the lesson good Sir :)
"To get to a better place...we need a worse place." So funny, but true and memorable.
"RELIEF AND TENSION". Man, that really answered my answers about what to use. I guess that is how things "should" be thought.
Nice!
I agree with an earlier comment. Everyone teaches you the triads, arpeggios and scales, but the role that each note plays is so important!
Claus, you are a lot of fun to work with .. Thank you.. you make this fun.. and you make me laugh

This lesson right here changes my perspective.
I will drown my self with music theories now.
I already know pentatonic and major scales. Any idea whats the best lesson i should learn next?
Go for chords and minor scale. U can go for caged system and circle of fifth. Go slow. You will learn it easily. Go for arpeggios and all over neck.
great lesson dude!!!
Outstanding and entertaining!
I like that guitar stand. What is it and where do I get it?
seriously thank you SO much.
You teach awesome sir
really amazing.....love it 😊😊
MY secound question is, if I know the Arpeggios patterns on the guitar neck, can I solo over chords if I don't really understand what I am doing theoretical, like is it enough to just know the patterns?

you sir, are an amazing teacher.. you answered 15 year old questions that I didn't even know how to ask lol
Nice lesson.
I was wondering how far can i get in guitar playing without knowing any music theory? And is it possible to do anything without it?
Ha! Best one so far fella, very informative and entertaining!
Haha, this was production worthy of Academy Award :)
Nice Squier Strat. How do you like it compared to other Strats?
What's that bridge pickup?
Thanks.
Good lessons!
